The twelfth installment of the Challenge stars Duncan and my OC Erin McLean!
Erin slammed the door angrily and slid to the ground. Angry tears streamed down her cheeks and she closed her eyes against the dim light of the hallway of the apartment building. She was sick of having to compete with Duncan's friends for his attention. No, she'd never been clingy but every now and then she'd like to spend some time with him without having him run off to join his buddies for a drink and a game of pool. It was bad enough she and Duncan both worked long hours and opposite shifts, but his phone was constantly going off when they were both home.
She didn't blame the guys though. Geoff was like an older brother to her, even though they were only several months apart in age; DJ was one of her closest male confidantes and Owen was just fun to be around. She loved all of them almost as much as she loved her own friends and she knew in her heart of hearts that She knew none of them meant any ill will when they called Duncan to hang out, it just always seemed it was when Erin was in the mood to just bunker down for the night, listen to some music or watch some horror movies.
She could hear Duncan bitching to the guys through the door and that just made it even worse. The least he could do was make sure she had actually left before he started talking smack about her. Half of the things he was saying were extremely exaggerated just to make it sound good, like he was top dog; the victim who was wronged, like she had turned him into the bad guy without proper reason.
She banged her head on the door and listened as the whining from Duncan stopped abruptly.
Good. She thought bitterly. Bout time something made you shut up.
She wiped the moisture from her cheeks and sniffed before standing up. If he was going to bitch and moan because Erin was, in his words, "ridiculously clingy" and "never gave him any space" then she was going to give him all the space he wanted. She pushed the door open and stalked into the apartment. It was eerily quiet inside and the boys all stared at her as if she were a ticking time bomb. She turned her stormy eyes to Duncan's steely teal ones. They stared at each other for several long seconds while their friends squirmed uncomfortably.
It was Geoff who spoke out, breaking the tense silence. "You okay Erin?"
Duncan shot him a murderous look, his eyes screaming traitor. Geoff shrugged his shoulders. He never had been one to pick sides.
"I'm peachy keen." Erin said slowly. She could feel her walls sliding into place, closing her off from those around her; most of all closing her off from Duncan. He noticed it too because she watched his posture tense but his eyes held a glimmer of worry. Erin walked away and when she returned she had a duffle back slung over her shoulder. "I'm going to stay with some friends for a couple days." She said coldly. "Or maybe a couple weeks…I haven't decided yet."
With that she walked out, putting more than just a mental wall between her and Duncan, but as many physical ones as possible.
