Author's note: So this is it! Last chapter and then an epilogue! It has been a crazy ride with this story, and like I promised before, it will continue. I hope all of you keep following this serie and I promise you that I have many more interesting ideas for it! Final PD will have spoilers for next story and how it will be focused (until I post the epilogue which will be in the next few days).
It was a soft knock that made Jane open her eyes and propel her whole body forward. By doing so she moved from under Maura and made her fall to the ground.
"I'm sorry." Jane whispered while going towards her gun and motioning for Maura to stay quiet. "Who is it?"
"It's Carlota." she heard a soft voice answer.
Maura was moving towards the door but was suddenly stopped by Jane. "Carlota never knocks. Put something on quickly and then go to the nearest window and run. I will try to distract the person outside and then let's meet at that cafeteria that we saw near the magic wall." Jane was angrily whispering to Maura.
"If I try to stay, will you let me?" Maura whispered while grabbing Jane's face and kissing her deeply.
"I think you know the answer to that question." Jane smiled softly.
"Didn't lose anything by asking." Maura finished getting her stuff. "Please come back to me."
Jane kissed Maura again and pushed her softly towards the window. "Nothing will stop me."
"Jane, I will come in if you don't open soon." they heard fake Carlota say.
"Just give me a sec!" Jane shouted while watching Maura lower herself. When she saw her gone she took the mattress and covered her body in it.
She heard some steps outside the room, and expecting them to open the door she quickly readied herself. Nevertheless, after a few minutes of silence she heard steps again.
"Open the door!" she heard the voices outside, and preparing for a huge attack party, she got her gun ready, imagining that they went to get reinforces. Still, when the door popped open she saw that the people coming in were in fact Carlota and a very angry-looking Paddy Doyle.
"What the hell?" she screamed while lowering her gun. "We thought you were intruders."
"Really dear, what made you suspect that?" Carlota asked sarcastically.
"The fact that you knocked and paranoia that you have been feeding us since we landed here."
Paddy moved around the room, and after checking it from side to side he finally faced Jane. "Where is my daughter?"
Jane started to gather her clothes. "She got out because we thought you were chasing us."
"And you let her!" Paddy screamed at Jane, suddenly grabbing her arms and moving her from side to side. "What the hell did you just do?!"
"I was protecting her!" Jane screamed back.
"What you just did was sentence her to death." Paddy continued screaming while throwing things around the room.
Jane froze and looked at Carlota, who simply stared at the two of them in clear shock.
"Carlota, please tell me that is not true."
"We had placed a perimeter around the apartment: an old magic that couldn't be broken by the enemy." she whispered. "If Maura left the perimeter willingly then she will not be protected."
Jane stopped listening when she heard protected. She quickly got her shoes on and started to run towards the exit only to be stopped again by Paddy.
"It's too late." he whispered.
"What do you mean?" Jane whispered back.
"She broke the perimeter." Carlota said simply.
"That doesn't mean she was captured, we can still find her." Jane said while again trying to move around Paddy.
"No, you don't understand. While you two were sleeping, Mephisto moved his forces inside the neighborhood. That's what we were coming to tell you." Paddy said while grabbing his phone and placing a call.
"Carlota, this is all..."
"No Jane." Carlota told her while grabbing her arms. "It's not your fault."
"If something happens to Maura..."
"It would have been her destiny." Carlota whispered sadly. "As I told you, there are many different paths that one can choose."
Paddy ended the call, a grim expression on his face. "I just got confirmation that they have Maura at an old factory on the outskirts of town."
"So let's just go." Jane said while grabbing her gun.
"It's not that easy." Paddy growled. "We will be facing an army of creatures there."
"I'm not willing to wait until you get an army." Jane growled back.
"Me neither." Paddy said, surprising Jane. "But we do need a plan. Can you see something that could help us" Paddy asked Carlota.
Carlota shrugged. "Nothing clear. Her future is dark around the edges."
Paddy nodded and then focused on Jane. "Mephisto will not hesitate in killing my daughter."
Jane felt tears on her eyes, and while desperately trying to control herself, she felt Carlota's hands on her shoulders. "But he will not be able to stop herself from wanting the two of you at the same time."
Jane looked up at Paddy.
"If we give him what he wants, and plan an offensive invasion on the factory, then that can leave him unprepared. He will not suspect that we are on it together because he knows that I would never approve of you." Paddy added while looking at Jane up and down. "Once we set the distraction, your only task will be of freeing Maura and getting her out."
Jane nodded.
"One more thing." Paddy added while looking at Carlota. "I know Carlota told you about Maura's weakness. You must understand that by weakness, it doesn't mean a voluntary response."
"I don't understand." Jane murmured.
"What I mean is that once Maura makes a promise, it is impossible for her to break it. No matter what, she won't. It's in all of the Doyle's blood."
"Because of the promise you made?"
Paddy nodded.
"Why are you telling me this?"
"Because I promise you that if you are in some way responsible for my daughter's death, I will find you and kill you."
"That is if I don't beat you to it." she whispered for only him to hear.
He looked surprised at her. "You love her that much?"
"A world without her wouldn't make sense." Jane answered simply. "Which is why I won't fail."
Maura quickly went down the staircase that faced the small room. She was reluctant about leaving Jane behind, but thinking about it, if she stayed, she could have made get the two of them in the hands of Mephisto, which simply could not do. Also, Jane promised to meet her, so she decided to just go to the cafeteria and try to stay calm. She was so concentrated on pretending to be a mere tourist that she failed to see the three men that started to follow her once she crossed the street that faced the apartment where they were staying. She could make out the cafeteria, and accelerating the pace, she tried to reach the door but was suddenly grabbed by two strong hands.
"One sound and we kill all the people inside this cafeteria." she heard a man threaten her. Maura knew right away that she would go with them.
"There is no need for that." she answered softly. "I will offer no resistance."
"Promise that you will not try to escape." another man added.
Maura nodded, and after doing so, she was pushed inside a car that was waiting at the end of the road. Once she entered the car she was faced with an old man who looked displeased about being there.
"You are Maura Isles?" he asked without looking up.
Maura nodded again.
"Well, finally we meet." he said while motioning for the driver to move. "You see, you discovered some of my victims in Boston."
Maura looked up, disgusted by the man. "You are the Fugu that attacked those poor people."
"Attacked is a little extreme. I prefer the word 'engaged'." he said amused. "But still, I have lived for so long and managed to be almost unnoticed. It was so hard to be so sloppy."
Maura looked up. "You were forced out of your hiding?"
"You should know why." he continued saying. "Your mother was unable to deny the call of Mephisto. No creature can escape it."
"So basically he controls all of you?"
He nodded. "Yes, unless he is killed in action or loses a challenge. You see, he would be considered the Alpha of the creatures."
"Why are you telling me all of this?" Maura asked suspiciously. "This could be a trick of yours."
"Yes, but you see, I enjoyed my quiet life and freedom. With Mephisto using us at his expense and to do his dirty work, the idea of living in a world ruled by him is not appealing at all. Still, don't get your hopes up." he said while flipping the page of the newspaper that he was holding. "I will still need to take you to him because he phrased it as a direct order."
"If you think that I will help your master unleash whatever evil he has planned, then I'm sorry to disappoint you." Maura said determined.
"Even if your will is against it, there is nothing you can do when the Erkling takes your heart and commands it."
"Commands it?" Maura asked, scared.
"The Erkling is not from this land." he whispered. "He is one of the oldest and most powerful magical beings known to men."
"Then why is he here?"
"Because Mephisto holds control over him, and no matter the unlimited powers, he has to do what Mephisto commands."
"If he truly is that powerful, then how can he be controlled in such a way?"
"Power, in the land of the Erkling, always comes with a price, and the price of such a power is in free will. The will of the Erkling is linked to an ancient instrument. Whoever owns the instrument owns the power."
Maura nodded sadly. "At least we gained some extra intel." she whispered, suddenly scared.
"Do not be ashamed of your fear." he said suddenly. "It will help you survive, Maura Doyle."
"My last name is Isles, not Doyle." Maura spat angrily.
"Not to him, not to us." he answered back calmly. "We waited for you, and your lover's return, for a very long time."
Maura refused to answer him, gazing away and focusing on the floor.
"Mephisto will enjoy breaking you apart." he commented dryly. "Such a shame, for you are extremely beautiful and smart."
"Do not even go there." she hissed. "I can see that you would prefer for us to win."
"And who would be us?"
"Us. The good people."
"That's a very simplistic view of the world." he said while suddenly stopping. "Your lover, has she not killed?"
"Yes, but she did it in order to protect others."
"And your father? The leader of a mob family?"
"He is my biological father, his actions are his own." Maura whispered.
"And what about the Oracle? Allowing another person to sacrifice his life for her? Is that what good people do? What heroes do?" he continued questioning her.
Maura looked down, ashamed that she was outsmarted in such a simple way.
"Good people are capable of doing evil things, no matter the name given to the reasons, and bad people are capable of doing good things."
"Then do the good thing and help me." Maura begged quietly.
He looked down at her, and for a moment she saw his hesitation. "The oracle spoke of a prophecy. This, what Mephisto has planned for you, is meant to happen, Miss Doyle." he said sadly. "But no matter what you think, what Mephisto will make you believe, you will not be alone."
"But..." Maura started to ask.
"That is all I know." he interrupted her while pushing her inside a warehouse.
Jane was fidgeting. She never fidgeted. Still, when the life of the love of your life was on the line, it was natural to be afraid. They had met with some of Paddy's 'friends' and created a plan of action. Somehow, Paddy found the location of Maura, and after coordinating and making some promises, he got a group of 15 men fully equipped. Also, he got the promise of the authorities that they would not interfere until 15 minutes after they got a 911 call. It wasn't much, but Jane hoped that it would be enough for them to quickly go in and get Maura. For the first time in her life she didn't care about catching the bad guys and bringing them to justice. She didn't care about the possibility of Mephisto being there, and because the whole point was Maura's safety, for the first time in her life she lied to her superiors about the status of the operation. Was she sorry? Yes. Did she regret it? No. She loved Maura too much, and after everything that Carlota had said, she was going to do her damndest in trying to safe her because she refused to accept that Maura's destiny was already made up for her.
"Are you ready?" she heard Carlota speak to her.
Jane turned around and smiled softly. "I am."
Carlota approached Jane and looked closely at her. "I know you, Jane Rizzoli. And I know that no matter what I told you yesterday, you will still try your hardest to safe Maura."
Jane nodded. "I'm sorry Carlota, no disrespect to your profession, but I refuse to accept that I was meant to find and then lose Maura."
Carlota laughed. "And again, that is why you are such a Torrenti. Always following your heart and not your brain."
Jane smiled softly. "Sorry."
"Don't be child." Carlota answered softly. "There was a reason for you to be chosen for this prophecy. With your personality included and all."
Jane smirked. "If I didn't know better, it would seem like you just gave me a compliment."
Carlota punched her shoulder lightly and hugged her tightly. "I suppose that the common advice of 'do not do anything stupid' does not apply here." she continued while separating and looking at Jane. "Still, do not do anything stupid Jane Clementine Rizzoli."
Jane smiled softly, touched by the way she had, surprisingly, learned to care about this sarcastic woman. Maybe Maura was right and the reason why the two of them collided so much was because they were so much alike.
"I will try not to." Jane finally said. "But no promises."
Carlota nodded and made her way outside of the room, leaving Jane alone so she could finish getting ready. Jane took the time to do a last check on her weapons and vest. It did seem that she was ready. Nevertheless, she was actually terrified of leaving the safety of the hotel room where she and Maura had spent the night merely two days ago. Maura, Jane thought softly. The reason why she was now in this big mess and going against what she thought was right during her whole life. Going against humanity's opinion of justice and selflessness. She had been selfless during her whole life, sacrificing herself over others most of the time: her family, her partners and her lovers. All the time it had been about them and what felt right for them. Now, now it was time for her to be selfish and get what she wanted. And in this case she wanted Maura. She wanted to be with Maura, possibly forever. I want to be with Maura forever, she realized while opening her mouth.
"I want to marry Maura Isles." Jane whispered to herself while looking at her reflection in the mirror. " she continued to look at herself. "I promise that after all of this is over, after we find peace, I will marry Maura Isles." Jane vowed while turning away from her reflection and heading out of the hotel room.
"You know." she heard a dark voice whisper from behind her ear. "It is so nice to finally meet you, Maura."
Maura refused to turn around and face the voice because she suspected who it could be. Right now she needed to stall as much as possible, because even now she still had hope. Hope of Jane finding and saving her. But in order for that to happen she needed to give her time.
"And did you know that it is also rude to not look when you are spoken to." the voice continued to hiss while grabbing her face and twisting it forcefully.
Maura felt her face turn but still refused to open her eyes. "I thought that my stance on this meeting was clear." she hissed angrily. "I do not look at you because I refuse to acknowledge you."
The voice laughed. "I can see how we are related. So feisty."
Maura's curiosity almost beat her determination at keeping her eyes closed. "You and I are not related."
"Are you not Maura Doyle, daughter of Paddy Doyle and Hope Martin?" the voice asked wickedly.
Is that her name?, Maura thought sadly. Could that truly be my mother's name?, she continued to ask herself. A sudden image flicked through her mind: her mother's body on her autopsy table.
"I have always been an Isles." she said confidently. "Who my biological parents are do not define me."
"But they relate you."
"If you would like to see it that way." Maura conceded. "But you are no family of mine." she spat at the voice, only to receive a slap on her face.
"This is going to be really fun." the voice said wickedly. "I assume you won't tell me where your lover, Jane Torrenti is?"
Maura stayed still, refusing to even recognize Jane's name so that he doesn't suspect she cares.
"I know you two are together, Maura. Remember, I have seen the two of you in the world of dreams. And what I saw there cannot be pretended."
"Well, what you saw is nothing more than a partnership."
"Bullshit." the voice said annoyed. "You know, things would go by much faster if you just told the truth."
Maura stayed quiet, again receiving another slap on her other cheek. This one was stronger and brought tears to her eyes. She still refused to speak.
"So were those your last words?" the voice said angrily.
This time Maura opened her eyes, and what she saw almost made her flinch. In front of her was an old man, with a little bit of white mushy hair on his face. His eyes were pitch black and his face was half burned. He smiled wickedly at her and winked.
"Fuck. You." she enunciated before feeling a punch on her jaw.
The man made his way towards her and grabbed her face, bringing it closer to him. Maura refused to focus on his eyes, but the smell of his skin was disgusting and it did seem that negative emotions flowed from his body. For some reason she lost hope of Jane ever coming.
"They won't come, Maura." he whispered while touching her skin softly. "They will leave you just like your parents did when you were born. They didn't love you and because of that they gave you away."
Maura closed her eyes and shook her head, refusing to accept his words. His body smelled of sadness and mistrust, if those feelings are even possible to smell.
"Yes, they did." he hissed. "And then your adoptive parents never even acknowledged you, merely tolerating your presence. Your whole life, you have always been tolerated."
"No I haven't." Maura said, trying to convince herself. Jane loved her. Jane truly loved her.
"And let's not talk about Jane." the man cooed. "Jane is the worst of all of them. Jane, little Jane who just needed to find someone more broken than her so she would feel better about herself. I mean, what other reason would she have in loving you?" he spat. "Everyone has left before her, why would she stay?"
Maura was crying deeply, her desire to remain strong crumbling with her doubts, doubts that were being feed by Mephisto's dark magic.
"You could have revenge on them. You can make them all pay." he promised while caressing her cheek. "You can tell me where they are and I will make them be sorry for leaving you."
Maura opened her eyes and looked at his, immediately seeing the hate and evilness.
"I won't." Maura said focused on the ground. "I won't let you win."
Maura felt pain on her back, and if she was correct she could feel blood dropping from her back.
"You stupid girl!" the voice ragged. "They will never love you. Jane will never love you. Why protect her?"
"Because even if Jane is incapable of loving me, I'm not. I will always love Jane, no matter what." she said confidently. "And that means you don't win." she sneered proudly.
The man screamed and hit her one more time. "If you are not going to do this willingly, then I'm afraid I have no other choice." he said while taking a dagger out of his belt and pointing it to the sky. "Dark One, I summon thee."
Maura felt the floor shake, and from it came a man with a dark suit and a cane. He looked uncaring, and from what she saw on his face, completely unhappy about being controlled by Mephisto.
"You called?" he asked mockingly.
"You will bring me her heart." Mephisto said while pointing at Maura with the dagger.
The man didn't say anything, instead resigning to his fate and going forward, towards Maura. In this moment Maura knew that everything was lost. She was going to be controlled by Mephisto, and there was nothing she could do about it. She opened her eyes again, and in front of her was the man with the suit, looking at her with curious eyes.
"I am truly sorry for this." he said while bringing his hand forward, only to be pushed back from Maura and tossed on the side.
Maura looked around in complete shock, and in a matter of seconds people were shooting each other around the building. Feeling soft hands on her back, Jane turned her face and saw Jane cutting the ropes on her arms and feet. Jane smiled lovingly at her, and before saying anything, the two of them moved to the back of the warehouse, dodging bullets and men. It was a couple of minutes until Jane brought them to a stop, and turning around she grabbed Maura's face.
"Maura, maura." she chanted while kissing her deeply. "Oh Maura."
Maura felt her eyes fill with tears of happiness and love. Jane had come back for her. "You came for me." she whispered.
"Of course I did." Jane said reverently while kissing her again. "I love you Maura."
"And I love you Jane, so much." Maura said while grabbing her hands. "
"Well, well, if it isn't Jane Torrenti." Maura heard Mephisto say. "I must admit I was expecting you sooner. Kinda thought you gave up on Maura."
"I could never leave Maura." Jane spat angrily. "And I promise you that she will leave this warehouse."
Mephisto smiled. "Well, you shouldn't make promises you can't keep." he said while pushing Jane away from Maura with his magic.
Maura was suddenly faced again by the Erkling, who was slowly walking towards her. He looked briefly at the figure of Jane on the ground. "Control the dagger and you control the Dark One." he hissed at her.
Maura knew what this meant, and when she saw Jane retaliate her attack against Mephisto she stood up and went towards her.
"Jane, you need to get the dagger." she said while pointing at it. "That controls the Erkling."
Jane nodded, and focusing on her powers, she imagined her hand extending and pulling the knife away from Mephisto's body on the ground. He recoiled, immediately feeling the magic, and before he could do anything else, she imagined restrains around his body, which turned into belts that held him momentarily. It wasn't long, but it was enough for her to push the dagger towards Maura's feet.
Maura ran, trying to grab the dagger while Jane contained Mephisto. She could see the Erkling coming behind her, and before he finally got a hand on her chest, she felt her hand touching the dagger.
"I command you to stop." she said fiercely.
The Erkling stopped his advances, suddenly turning his eyes and making Maura do the same. When she saw Jane fight with Mephisto with lashes of magic she felt compelled to get up and go to her aid. Jane, sensing this, turned around and looked at her. This momentary distraction allowed for Mephisto to focus his anger and put his hands on the ground, softly incanting words that were blabber to the two women.
"What is he doing?!" Maura asked the Erkling.
"He is opening a black hole." he said while going away from the wormhole. "We need to get away from its epicenter."
"A black hole, but that's scientifically impossible." she started to blabber.
"Not for magic." he answered wistfully.
"But Jane." she said while looking at her, still holding down Mephisto. "What about her?"
He looked at her, almost sadly. "She is trapped with him in it."
Maura looked desperately at Jane and started to run towards her, towards the black hole.
"Don't come any closer." Jane screamed to Maura.
"Jane!" Maura screamed back. "I can save you." she said to herself more than Jane. "We can stop this."
"No you can't." Mephisto said from the epicenter. "Your refusal to give your life will cost the life of Jane." he said while smirking.
"Not Jane! Please, take me and not Jane." she screamed at the man who was laughing wickedly from the center of the whole.
"No Maura, this is my choice." Jane screamed at her from the hole, feeling its strength pulling her towards it.
"But this is my punishment." Maura said while crying. "I have to pay for my family sins."
"No you don't. Promise me." Jane whispered while feeling her magic hold on Mephisto disappear. As soon as this was done he smirked and left in a puff of smoke. "Promise me that you will not try to follow me."
"Jane, I can' be without you." Maura cried. "I can't live without you."
"Yes you can." Jane smiled sadly. "And you will. You have to." she felt the black hole pull her again, and in mere seconds she was standing at the near end of it. "You need to promise Maura."
"I promise Jane." she said without thinking, and when she saw Jane flip forward towards the hole she tried to move, but found herself unable to.
Jane looked at Maura and her attempts at freeing herself and smiled softly. She did it, she had saved Maura. She had cheated destiny and gotten away with it. She smiled at the thought and looked up again to see Maura looking at her with sadness and deep love.
"I hate you Jane Rizzoli. You knew I wouldn't be able to follow you." she cried harder. "You knew."
Jane nodded sadly before looking at the hole. She could see nothing inside of it, and when she felt the last bit of strength fade away from her she turned her face towards Maura.
"I love you so much Maura Isles. You were worth it." Jane said while falling towards the hole, it immediately closing when Jane went through.
"Jane!" Maura screamed while looking at Jane fall. "I will find you Jane!" she kept on screaming while the light that emanated from the portal was too bright for her to see something. "I will always find you." she whispered the last part.
With her eyes closed because of all the light, Maura screamed and felt the invisible forces go away from her body. She was incapable of moving from her position on the ground, grief being too strong. She had forgotten completely about the war being fought in the warehouse, her eyes only on the remains of the black hole that took the love of her life away. She cried, feeling the betrayal and deep love that Jane had burn through her heart. It was meant to be her, she kept chanting. It was meant to be her. She knew that when she opened her eyes she was going to see that Jane wasn't there, that she had left her. The pain of this absence was too strong, of her necessity of the strong woman too incapacitating. She needed Jane as much as she needed to breathe. But Jane gave me this chance, she told herself. And I promised I would find her, she continued her mental chant, determined to hold her promise. And in order to hold that promise I need to open my eyes.
Maura opened her eyes slowly, adjusting her sight and preparing herself mentally to finding a huge hole on the ground. Looking around, there was nothing to see, the Erkling gone and sight of the dagger. But what surprised Maura the most was when she heard movement near the center of the hole. She stood up, running frantically towards it, and stopped herself because of what she saw there. Instead of there being a big hole, she saw green pasture and what looked like an old road. Nevertheless, over the pasture there was a body. A woman with large blonde hair and what seemed to be medieval clothing. She started to approach her, lowering herself and with a deep breath she touched her shoulder. The woman immediately jerked away, fear and surprise on her eyes. Maura raised her hands in a sign of surrender, and giving her space she separated a little.
"I will not harm you." she said softly.
"Where am I?" the woman asked. "And what year is it?"
"You are in Ireland and its 2013." Maura answered softly.
"Ireland?" the woman asked while trying to stand up. "Oh no." she said while tears were falling from her face.
"Wherever you are from, you don't need to worry. I can help you." Maura promised.
"No, you can't." she whispered sadly.
"Why not?" Maura asked softly.
"Because you would have to believe."
"Believe in what?"
"Believe in magic." she said while looking at Maura, begging her to not think she was crazy.
"I believe." Maura said while grabbing her hand. "And I will believe you."
The woman smiled brightly. "Thank you." she smiled again. "Thank you..." she kept on going.
"Maura." Maura answered while smiling sadly. "Maura Isles."
"And I'm Emma Swan."
PD: Sooooo! I hope you were all surprised with the way I ended this story, and yes! It will be kind of crossover with OUAT. If you are a fan of this show also I recommend you to follow the second part of this serie, which will be solely focused on OUAT and will be spaced out during the same time frame as Special Homicide. This means that the two stories take place at the same time but in different places. As you can imagine, the third one will unite the two stories and be told from both perspectives. I don't want to spoil a lot, but I am a sucker for happy endings, so although I ended this one badly, I promise you they will all have happy endings. Any questions, suggestions and others, feel free to comment or PM me :)
