CHAPTER 26
Thrills AND Spills
Relieved to find the bear unharmed, Sora strode up to him. He knelt down with a smile and said, "I'm so glad you're okay, Pooh."
"And I'm glad you came to visit," Pooh acknowledged in reply. "But, you see, I was just about to begin my stoutness exercises. Perhaps we could visit a bit later… Somebody-I-Don't-Know."
Sora was shocked on all accounts. Apparently, Pooh had entirely forgotten what the fifteen-year-old's name was. "Uh… sure," he mumbled in return.
As Pooh started bowing forwards as though touching his toes, Sora inquired, "So, how's Piglet these days?"
"I don't believe I know anyone by that name," Pooh replied, losing track of what he had been doing seconds before. "Now, where was I? Oh, yes! My stoutness exercises."
Puzzled by this unusual transformation in his friend, Sora placed his hand before Pooh's eyes, only to receive no reaction of any sort from the latter. The teenager mumbled to himself, "Something very weird is happening here… "
Nearly two whole hours had gone by since the group had crossed into the unknown territory of the 100-Acre Wood. To Sora, it had felt more like five hours had passed. Due to the lack of real time existing in the Sleeping Worlds (which Master Yen Sid had explained before the start of this quest) there was no accurate method to figure out what time it really was. The sun's brilliant light had faded into the darker shadows of the woods as the brown-haired Keyblade wielder helped Pooh follow Owl's route on the map. According to what the latter had claimed, the woods the pair were currently traversing — with Riku, Violet, Piglet, Rabbit, Tigger, and Eeyore — were supposed to be filled with huge amounts of fearsome Heffalumps, Woozles, and who knew how much worse?
As the procession neared a big clearing, Pooh looked up in surprise. "Look," he said, pointing to a large rock formation up ahead.
Taking a moment to observe the landmark from where he stood, Riku took into account how the rock appeared to be upside-down. Its small base was jammed into the ground with sides leading upward so smoothly they appeared to be made from glass or even ice. The top of the jagged rock was leaning towards the group. To the left and right of the formation were a set of trees that had previously given up their leaves to the wind. The crooked branches seemed to be on the verge of transforming into fingers, making the trees themselves a pair of claws.
Sweeping his eyes across the map with Pooh, Sora found the landmark labeled along their route. The drawing Owl had created showed a pair of glaring red eyes on the rock's face with two monster-shaped claws in place of the trees. Reading the text below the sketch, Sora's eyes began to widen. "'The Upside-Down Rock'", he read aloud. "'If you've made it this far, you're where monsters are.'"
The instant after the teenager had finished reading, an enormous GROWL echoed into the ears of everyone there. Whirling their eyes around the immediate area, one could clearly tell the entire group was certain they weren't alone. For several long seconds, silence fell upon their ears.
"W-W-What was that?" Piglet gulped with a nervous grin.
"Sounded too hungry for a Heffalump," Eeyore stated in his typical gloomy tone of voice, although it had grown a tiny quiver.
"Too mean for a… jag-u-lar," Rabbit sputtered with fear in his voice.
"It couldn't be a Woozle," Pooh added. "Could it?"
Violet paused in thought for a minute. Up until now, the only real monsters she had known to exist in the Realm of Sleep were the Nightmarish Dream Eaters. Perhaps they were causing all this panic? Being the Angel of Dreams, she had always been positive the Nightmares ate happy dreams and produced nightmares to replace the said dreams. Her Spirits worked in the exact opposite of the darker monstrosities. Thus, if she assumed there were Nightmares lurking about the woods, then there were enemies in the current vicinity.
Tigger gulped as the whole group began to step backwards anxiously. "I bet it's a big, old," he nervously stammered. "Bug-y eyed, saber tooth-y, Skullasaurus."
"Skullasaurus?!" everyone else exclaimed in alarm. Their eyes were wide with distress and they all began to take extra gasps of air. In the blink of an eye, a horde of at least twenty-five creatures appeared out of the nearby trees. At the mere sight of them, Pooh, Piglet, Tigger, Rabbit, and Eeyore starting dashing all around the scenery for any available places to hide.
Being one of the few left, Sora was awestruck. The majority of the creatures consisted of duck-like beings with orange bodies and yellow beaks. The rest were red and white striped deer sporting blue antlers. Before anyone could move, a large green panda came stomping out of the trees and joined the creatures.
Spotting the monsters emerging from the woods, Violet shouted, "It's a pack of Nightmares!"
Realizing what the angel had said, Riku summoned his Keyblade before charging into the enemies. It didn't take long for Sora to do the same with Violet rapidly following suit.
In the midst of the battle, Violet found herself unable to handle fighting with her recently-acquired Keyblade. One of the deer-shaped Nightmares charged at her as she entered the quarrel. Recalling how she had watched Sora and Riku raise their weapons to block incoming attacks, Violet attempted to do the same. Unfortunately, her weapon felt heavier than the whale, Monstro would've weighed. With a thrust of its antlers, the Nightmare tossed the angel into the air, which sent her soaring into the upside-down rock. Not wishing to become a splatter of matter upon the face of the landmark, Violet flipped around so her feet were headed for the rock instead. A loud BONK could be heard as the Angel of Dreams bounced off the rock, sending her Keyblade first into the gigantic panda-resembling Nightmare. Once her feet were back on the ground, she switched her focus back to the creature who had thrown her.
Meanwhile on the edge of the clearing, Sora found himself surrounded by the duck-shaped enemies. He glared at them all, knowing for certain there was no relation between the monsters and Donald Duck. When one of the enemies approached him, Sora swung his Keyblade, slashing straight through the former. While one enemy had been decimated, the others all took the opportunity to open their beaks, revealing mile-long tongues in a deep shade of red. Knowing he would be unable to defend himself from all these attacks at once, Sora began to twirl like the ballerina of the music box Tinker Bell had repaired in Pixie Hollow. He spun his Keyblade in the palm of his hand at the same time, resulting in all the attacks being countered. When the Nightmares got struck by their own tongues, they all exploded into barrages of bubbles while the sixteen-year-old youth finally stopped spinning. Sora wobbled for a moment, having become dizzy from such a super-speedy movement. Hopefully he would never have to turn like a top ever again.
As Violet was bouncing off the rock and Sora was cornered, Riku had been forced to climb a tree on the edge of the meadow. If the plant hadn't been so short, the silver-haired Keyblader would have been well above the snorting, determined faces of the deer-like Nightmares on the ground below. Worried that the monsters would eventually succeed in scaling the foliage, Riku sighed before leaping from the branches. With a yell of fury, he sliced his Keyblade clear through the closest enemies.
"Take this!" he hollered, slashing his weapon through the remaining creatures. Before he would've counted to ten, Riku had vanquished all of the Nightmares who were trapping him.
A few minutes later, Sora, Riku, and Violet all met together at the base of the rocky landmark. Sora had almost finished regaining his balance and Violet had already defeated the Nightmare that had thrown her. Riku was feeling relieved, even as Sora smiled and placed his hands behind his head. "Well, that's that!" Sora beamed, causing his best friend to shake his head.
"True," Violet agreed. She gestured around the vicinity as though noting the absence of something or other. "So where are Pooh and his friends?"
Sora's eyes lit up in realization. Pooh and the others had all wandered off elsewhere when the Nightmares had appeared. However, Sora had never imagined he would've been battling any form of monster in the 100-Acre Wood. The whole world had always seemed so peaceful and innocent compared to life-threatening and insecure. For all Sora knew, the fact this world was sleeping meant it was probably being harmed. He knew this meant he, Riku, and Violet would have to find the Sleeping Keyhole as soon as possible.
"Um… i-i-is it safe to come out now?" a voice asked.
Spinning their eyes around the meadow, Sora, Riku, and Violet found Piglet and Eeyore crawling out from behind a small bush beside one of the creepy-looking trees; Tigger was climbing down the tree. Rabbit stepped out from behind the gigantic rock formation and Pooh strolled out from the nearby foliage. As the five friends gathered around the two Keyblade-Masters-In-Training and the Angel of Dreams, a series of relieved smiles appeared on everyone's faces.
"Glad to know you're all okay," Sora said.
"Indeed," Pooh chuckled in agreement.
"Aw, c'mon!" Tigger enunciated. He began punching his fists into the air. "I could've taken 'em on!"
Watching this reaction from the tiger, Violet crossed her arms and shook her head.
"Oh, d-d-dear!" a nervous Piglet stammered.
"It's all in a day's work," Sora admitted with his humungous grin showing upon his lips. Riku shook his head, forcing a silent giggle from Violet's lips. Sora had just inserted his unneeded input for all to hear.
"Okay," Rabbit spoke up before anyone else could speak. "But we're not getting anywhere fast! That just won't do!"
"You're right, Rabbit!" Pooh affirmed. He paused in thought. "About what?"
Rabbit slapped his right hand upon his head with irritation. From what any outsider — like Sora and Riku — would have understood, the bunny was easily frustrated by even the slightest piece of nonsense-based humor. "We need an effective leader!" he finally proclaimed aloud. "Someone who's informed; someone… leader-ly! Someone like… "
"I know!" Tigger cheered, bouncing up and down on his springy tail. "I'll be the one who saves Christopher Robin! No 'Skullasaurus' is gettin' the drop on me!"
"Actually," Riku began. "Why don't Sora and I—"
Rabbit cut the silver-haired Keyblader off by swiping the map from Pooh's hands. "…Me!" he smiled in response.
Before anyone could have counted to three, an even louder GROWL echoed about the immediate vicinity. The entire group froze in place as Sora, Riku, and Violet summoned their Keyblades. To their surprise, not a single monster appeared from the surrounding foliage.
"I don't like the sound of that," Eeyore muttered softly. "Though I don't enjoy the sound of most things, either."
"The 'Skullasaurus' must be following us," Sora concluded in an instant. Based on this statement, Riku was positive the brown-haired Keyblade wielder was making complete assumptions without enough evidence to prove it. This was clearly not uncommon.
With a mere hint of anxiety in his voice, Rabbit unfurled the parchment in his grasp, swept his eyes across it repeatedly, and pointed towards a clump of trees to his left. "Well," he said, before clearing his throat. "Anyone with half a sense of direction would see we'll lose the beast by cutting across this lovely meadow."
With great concentration, Riku crept his way through the grey-colored vines as he followed Rabbit through the patch of thorns. If this was what the bunny referred to as a "lovely meadow", then it was no surprise how Owl had assumed the word "school" was "skull". Talk about total irony!
"What a lovely meadow this is!" Rabbit declared with sarcasm filling his voice. He came to a dead stop inches from one of the mammoth-sized thorns. Carefully turning his head around, he noticed a green plant with red-tinted spikes in shape of teeth growing a few feet away. "Wow! Those are rare for this location," he enunciated, trying to sound braver than he was feeling.
"Where exactly is this location, Rabbit," Pooh called out from where he and Piglet were following Sora a few footsteps away. "And might it be nearer Christopher Robin than farther?"
"Why," Rabbit smirked a smile in return. "We're right here! On course, of course!"
Deep down inside, Sora had the strange sensation even Rabbit did not have a clue where the group was currently at or which direction they were all heading in. Whatever part of the woods they had entered was entirely unfamiliar to anyplace the sixteen-year-old teenager had visited prior to this. All the ivy in the area was as thick as a fogbank. The sharp needles of the thorns appeared to be waiting for an opportunity to strike at the group as they continued to crawl, tip-toe, and clamber deeper within. If the guy in the black coat actually was behind this darker aspect of the world's environment, then Sora knew he still had a goal beyond the quest at hand. Besides, he could still be keeping Pooh's friend as a hostage as the Keyblade wielder continued to ponder about it.
A small gasp of air from behind caught his ear. Swirling his head around hastily, Sora found Piglet nervously trying to avoid the pointy tips of the thorns. The plant's sharpness was like a spear or lance from the knights of the Medieval Legends he'd heard about. Hopefully not a single thorn would injure the procession on their journey. "Oh, d-d-d-dear!" Piglet gulped. "This is not the place for a small, and frightfully-fearful animal — such as myself."
"Or myself!" Tigger agreed from a small patch overhead. He glanced downwards to where Eeyore was crawling through. "Or himself!"
"Thanks for noticing," Eeyore sadly answered.
"At least neither of you have wings," Riku teased with a faint smirk on his face. He caught a glimpse of Violet crossing her arms behind him. The angel's facial expression had turned into one of annoyance. Last time this had occurred, Riku had "joked" the reason why the amusement park, Pleasure Island, had been in such bad shape. "Guess nobody ever cleans it, huh?" Riku had smirked. The result had been a look of disgust from the Angel of Dreams. While it would have appeared the incident had been forgotten entirely, Riku wasn't sure if Violet had forgiven him for such a random statement. He had sounded so stupid in front of her!
"Exactly why I chose it," Rabbit perked up, trying to sound as confident as he could under such circumstances. He gestured around at the thorns. "No… 'Skullasaurus' would dare follow us in here."
After a small giggle had left the bunny's lips, Sora was about to contemplate whether or not Rabbit was being sincere. His thoughts were rapidly interrupted when an especially loud GROWL echoed about the patch of thorns. Everyone froze as Rabbit's ears rolled up before shooting out like a pair of party favors. A startled Tigger fell from his position onto Eeyore as Violet grasped Riku's left arm tightly. Sora nearly jumped from his place through the vines and thorns overhead and into the sky high up above. With terror filling his eyes at the rate of a flash flood, Piglet screamed before darting down a narrow path through the thorny patch of vines.
"Piglet, come back!" Pooh called out. "I can't lose you, too!"
The bear tried to give chase, but was unable to follow his friend's super-swift movements as Piglet zigzagged out of sight, fear still trapped in his throat.
Seeing all this happen, Sora started sprinting ahead. "C'mon! Let's go after him!" he called back.
Following Piglet's tiny footprints took a lot longer than Sora had assumed. Even with Riku, Violet, Pooh, Tigger, Rabbit, and Eeyore helping to track where Piglet had ventured, it appeared as though the group was beginning to travel in a series of circles. Questioning how this was possible, Sora concluded Piglet's horrified behavior had resulted in the very, small animal completely losing his sense of direction. The light gathering of dirt around them tended to shroud the footprints all the more as the group tried to pinpoint which way Piglet had gone with each step.
After nearly five minutes had passed, Violet sighed. At the rate things were going, it felt as if they would never be able to locate Piglet. When Tigger had explained how horrible 'Heffalumps' and 'Woozles' were, the angel began to sense concern rising from within. Hopefully Piglet hadn't been taken hostage by such monsters, or Nightmares, or even… the stranger wearing the black-hooded coat. Still, what was the chance he could be behind this whole mission of rescuing Christopher Robin from the "Skull"? Then again, that guy did tend to pop out of nowhere at random intervals, which Violet herself had known about since she first encountered him not too long before meeting Riku in the purple-stoned plaza of Traverse Town. She could only hope that stranger was not responsible for the disappearance of Pooh's very best, best friend.
The brightness of a sudden patch of sunlight forced the entire group to squint. Sora had stopped in his tracks so rapidly, Pooh had rammed into him, followed by Rabbit, Tigger, Riku, Violet, and Eeyore. All seven friends had landed in a pile at the edge of the patch of vines and thorns. As they all scrambled to their feet, Sora pointed ahead. "Look!" he cried.
Wondering what had seized the teenage Keyblade wielder's attention, Riku and Violet turned their focus into the same direction of which Sora was referring to. Pooh, Rabbit, Eeyore, and Tigger all did the same. Not a single one of them could believe their eyes; a series of large smiles formed upon each of their faces.
In the distance ahead was a large canyon consisting of reddish colored stone. The walls of rock were so smooth a snowboarder could slide down them without there being any snow. Up above was an endless, blue sky. As for down below, a large patch of flowers sprouting in the middle of a lush, green meadow could be seen. The scent of a million fragrances filled the noses of Sora and Riku in no time. A long, narrow stream flowed through the surrounding terrain without much hurry. This location could clearly be defined as a truly peaceful spot, at least in Riku's mind.
"So serene," Violet marveled as she caught her first view of the valley.
"You know it!" Sora approved, his oversized grin reemerging, though he did not quite understand the meaning of the word Violet had used. All this did was make Riku shake his head and smile, again.
As he led the group through the meadow's soft, healthy grass, Sora felt happier than ever. Recalling how the environment of the 100-Acre Wood had always been full of tranquility in the past, he was certain this particular valley was more of how he would have pictured the world being from the start of this quest. However, he had heard about the "Skullasaurus", helped Riku and Violet battle of horde of Nightmares, and clambered through a patch of thorns just to get to this spot. What was going on? Was the whole world trapped in a state of complete nightmare? Or was there some other reason?
"Hey," Riku called out, snapping Sora from his pondering. Puzzled by what the silver-haired Keyblader was referring to, Sora swung his focus to where the former was pointing. Before his eyes stood Piglet, happily sniffing at the flowers upon a purple bush in the center of the meadow. When one of the flowers began flapping away from the stem, Sora realized the plant was covered in a flock of butterflies.
"Why," Pooh called out as the whole group approached the very small animal. "I believe you've made a friend, Piglet!"
The butterfly seized one of the straps on Piglet's clothing and started tugging as hard as it could. Unable to rise, the rest of the flock of insects flew over and offered their assistance.
"Whoa!" an impressed Sora awed. "You're covered from head to toe, Piglet!"
"Check it out, Piglet," Tigger cheered. "You're just plain popular!"
"Some Piglet's have it," Eeyore sighed. "Some donkeys don't."
Sora smiled; he hadn't witnessed such a sight for a long time. Life had been quite boring back on the islands, especially since school had started back up soon after Riku and him had defeated Xemnas and brought down Organization XIII for good. Now things felt more and more like he had been longing they would be.
He paused in thought, recalling the unexpected encounters back in Rascal's Dreamland and The Grid. When Xehanort's Nobody had emerged out of the dark portal with the strange young man from before, Sora had nearly leapt onto the wooden table behind him in the clubroom. Why had the villain returned when it was clear he had been defeated long ago? What had he meant by comparing Pinocchio and the brown-haired teenager to a Nobody? For that matter, what had been the whole point of the rambling monologue back in Tron's world? Had The Grid even been asleep? Or was awake all along? Nothing seemed to be making sense in the Realm of Sleep. Chances were that was just the way things were meant to be.
Sora came out of his deep contemplation in time to watch the flock of butterflies take flight with Piglet in their possession.
"Why Piglet," Pooh remarked. "I believe they want to take you home with them."
"I'm sure that's very nice of them," Piglet giggled. "But I already have a home."
It was at that exact second the small creature took into account of how high up he was. He covered his eyes with fear. "Oh, d-d-d-dear!"
"Piglet!" Sora shouted out. "Come back here!"
"I would if I could, but I can't!" Piglet hollered back.
"Jump Piglet," Tigger yelled aloud. "We'll catch you — likely as not!"
Violet sighed in disbelief as she shook her head. Clearly the tiger's comment would be completely unsuccessful in giving the piglet enough courage to try.
"I would if I could," Piglet replied. "But they won't let me!"
"Could you ask them to bring you back?" Riku inquired.
Piglet paused. "I suppose, but I don't know which way 'back' is."
Pooh giggled to himself. "It's down here. Look."
Even though he tried to remove his arms from his shut eyes, Piglet was unable to peer down to where everyone else was watching from. "I'm too afraid!" he confessed. "If only Christopher Robin were here… "
Great! Just great! All Sora needed was one of Pooh's friends to worry to the point where they would need to be rescued. Since Christopher Robin was the name of who they were currently venturing off to save, Sora knew this meant he would have to bring Piglet back down himself. This was not unusual for him. Every time he had visited the world within Merlin's book, at least one segment of the story involved having to save someone from danger in one way or another.
"Christopher Robin," Pooh exclaimed in excitement. "Piglet, that's it! He told me to remind you that you're… 'Bigger than a big leaf!' I mean, 'Bolder when you're green?' Is any of this making you feel any less afraid?"
Not moving his arms a single inch, Piglet yelled back a response. "I'm afraid not, Pooh."
After hearing what the bear had spoken, Sora smirked in amusement. He had long since become acquainted with Pooh's jumbled memory and easily confused logic. Once, the bear had been followed some footprints he thought were a kidnapped but happened to be his own. Another time, he had mistaken Piglet being blown around in the wind as a fun ride from an amusement park. Such a silly, old bear indeed!
"If you don't mind me asking," Eeyore asked. "How will we get Piglet back down?"
"Allow me," Violet spoke out as she strode up to where Pooh was situated. Carefully watching the butterflies' pattern of movement — a gigantic figure 8 — she jumped into the sky, her wings flapping along behind her back. In a matter of moments, the angel had reached Piglet's location and had taken ahold of the small animal. In the process, the flock of purple butterflies had assumed Violet was a rival and fled as quickly as they could. Although Piglet was a small animal, it didn't take long for the Angel of Dreams to discover how heavy he really was.
"You weigh as much as a ship!" Violet grunted, trying to lift him. "No wonder one butterfly was not enough!"
"I had to become heavier," Piglet explained. "I was tired of being blown around by the wind."
Nevertheless, Piglet was too heavy for Violet to carry, resulting in the angel plunging straight down to a patch of wildflowers. Unaware of the incident taking place in the air, Rabbit was standing in the middle of the patch, scanning his eyes up and down the map, trying to make sense of Owl's scribbles on the piece of parchment.
"Look out!" Sora proclaimed as loudly as he could project his voice. Unfortunately, he had spoken too late. By the time Rabbit realized what was happening, Violet and Piglet had already landed upon him.
Though she was in a daze for a moment, Violet quickly clambered to her feet, lifting Piglet from where he had landed on her lap. Tigger hopped over, scooped the pair up in his arms and declared, "You did it, bright-shinin' star! Imagine, being outnumbered by those guys — a gazillion ta one!"
Even as he walked away cheerfully, Tigger had totally ignored the fact he was stomping through the wildflowers. A half-trampled, half-conscious Rabbit hurriedly rose from the spot, only to dizzily point down a path leading further into the unexplored regions of the 100-Acre Wood. "Christer-forgotten, uh Chrees-Gopher Bobbin is… this way!"
While everyone followed the bunny out of the meadow, both Sora and Pooh came to a halt in their tracks. Spinning around, they both noticed Piglet hadn't moved; the young pig was sighing with his head angled downward.
"Are you alright, Piglet?" Pooh asked, concerned for his friend.
"Yes, Pooh," Piglet sighed deeply. "Thank you. Violet saving me was such a brave thing to do."
"You're brave, too, Piglet," Sora reminded.
"Yes," Pooh agreed in turn. "'Braver than… something.'"
Piglet was astounded. "I am?!" he exclaimed. "Oh! What thing is that?!"
"I'm not sure, Piglet," Pooh admitted with a deep sigh. "If only I could remember."
Sora nodded in approval. Perhaps sooner rather than later something would come along and spark the bear's memory. Until then, who knew what Christopher Robin 'supposedly' had said?
A/N: What WAS Pooh trying to remember? Was it important? If it was, he should recall it sometime.
Well, I think I know what you are thinking; WHY IS THERE FIGHTING IN THE 100-ACRE WOOD?!
For a response, take a look at what happens in Pooh's world in Kingdom Hearts RE: Chain of Memories. Notice any CARD-BASED BATTLING AGAINST BEES? THAT'S enough to confirm there HAS been some form of fighting in THE 100-ACRE WOOD!
