The match had been going on for quite long now, the battle reaching end game as both teams fought it out to topple the other.

Respawning at her base, Diana collected her last item to complete her set and headed out. She had been doing reasonably throughout the game, laning against Zed and roaming to pick up a surprise double kill up top before being sprung upon not long after by Rengar. Ups and downs, it's all part of the game. Despite having roamed to other lanes to gank, she had yet to face against Varus. Somewhere at the back of her mind, she was hesitant about meeting him again. Especially in these circumstances, where it was kill or be killed and it was her job to assassinate whomever crossed her path.

Even if it was Varus.

Especially if it was Varus.

As she ran through the lane, she heard pings going up near the river where the rest of her team were heading. Changing her path, she headed into the jungle to follow the rest of her team further ahead of her.

'An ally has been slain'

She cursed under her breath as Caitlyn's presence disappeared and not soon after followed by the extinguishing of Thresh's presence.

'Enemy Double kill'

Diana ran through the bushes towards the sound of the skirmish. There was a burst of heavenly glow as two pillars of light shot down ahead to her left.

'An enemy has been slain'

Rushing through the river, there was a loud thud as she heard the sound of a large body falling to the ground nearby.

'Enemy Triple kill'

Stepping out of the bush, she could see the scattered figures of her fallen team and their support, the ground riddled with seething purple tendrils, a trail of blood leading around the wall out towards the lane. Taking a step forward, her foot caught on something as she bent down pick it up. A tattered maroon scarf that she recognised, dirty and bloodstained.

His scarf.

She knew she would have had to face him sooner or later.

Rounding the corner she saw his limping figure. He had sustained a lot of damage. Too much damage; bullet holes riddled through his shoulder, lacerations splayed across his body and a deep bleeding gash had taken out part of his side. At the sound of her footsteps he turned to face her, making no move to escape, his figure hunching with effort to stay standing. The shape of his bow was wavering, distorting and shifting as he fought to keep its form. She could see his control over it slipping as the dark tendrils licked up over his body, curling up his arms and up his stomach. He was breathing heavily, one arm holding himself up against the wall as blood dripped on the ground.

Varus' eyes met hers, a small melancholy smile forming on his lips.

"You came." he whispered, his voice ragged.

One instant she was still walking towards him, crescent blade in her hand by her side and in the next, she was in front of him, her hair and glowing aura leaving a streaking after-trail behind her. His blood dripped on the ground in front of her, dyeing the earth a deep red, the stain spreading. Standing still there together, in the midst of a battleground, like everything around them ceased to matter. There was no battle, there was no bloodshed, there was no victory or defeat. She took a small step closer, her gaze taking in his failing body – his true self. His breathing was hoarse, his body shuddering violently with each intake of breath. Slowly she lifted her blade, hooking it around his waist and pulling him closer. The sharp tip dug into his already bleeding slashed side as he suppressed a spasm of pain, his hands gripping her tightly, fingers digging into her arm as he hunched over.

His face was inches from hers, bloodstained white hair falling to the side and brushing across her cheek, his corruption between them licking across her armour, across her skin. She could feel his presence slipping away, his breathing laboured as his wounds bleed out. There was a flicker of something unrecognisable through his eyes, something long lost beneath the pain.

Varus' mouth twitched, almost imperceptibly as he leaned his head and she knew what he wanted as she raised hers. Their lips were locked in the next instant, his shimmering dark power dancing with her pale cascading glow, swirling around them both. His lips were still hungry for hers, but this time weakly so, her lips tingling again at his touch as the warmth from them brought back memories. His familiar musky scent was masked by the smell of blood, of exertion, of pain. She felt his cool breath, his warm lips, his bittersweet taste, she felt what she had gained and what she had found and what he could promise and she felt herself falling through it all over again.

A single indulgence.

Even as she pulled on her blade, she knew it wouldn't last, couldn't last.

A trickle of dark blood.

His body wavered as his grip loosened, his lips parting from hers and his breathing faded as he collapsed to the ground.

A fleeting moment of passion.

She bent down, gently lifting him up to wrap his scarf back around his neck, tenderly tucking and straightening it.

"Promise me you'll find me again…"

'Shut Down'
