The Devil's Last Dance

Sargent Sanders was cradling his head in his hands.

"This is too much," he muttered. "Too much."

"Do you think we broke him?" Alex whispered uncertainly to Nico. The son of Hades shrugged in response.

"I suppose this kind of thing doesn't happen every day," he replied.

"Not before you showed up it didn't," Wolf said. Nico stepped on his foot.

Sanders looked up from his mental-breakdown position.

"This is some crazy-ass shit, Devil," he said. "But for some reason I completely believe you."

"You do?" Nico was surprised. The Sargent carded a hand through his buzz-cut.

"Yes," he replied. "It makes sense. All that crap you pulled on the first day: appearing behind me and turning your uniform black – it all fits. Plus the building going up in black fire and how you killed Dr Three." He rested his hands on his forehead. "The son of a death god is really all you could be."

Nico wasn't sure whether to be offended or what. Sargent Sanders' eyes moved on to the ten teenagers standing next to K-Unit.

"And you're all demigods too, right?" he confirmed. Percy nodded.

"Yep."

"Who were your parents again?"

Nico lifted his hand to point in turn.

"Percy's a son of Poseidon," he started, jerking a thumb at the black haired boy. "The blond girl next to him is Annabeth, a daughter of Athena.

"Reyna's a daughter of Bellona, Roman goddess of battle; Leo's a son of Hephaestus; Jason is a Jupiter kid, Roman god of the skies; Piper's Aphrodite.

"Thalia's a daughter of Zeus and Lieutenant of Artemis, and Hazel is a daughter of Pluto, Roman god of the dead." He gave her a small smile. "She's my half-sister.

"Frank is a son of Mars, the roman god of war."

Nico got to Will then and he wasn't able to not smile a little.

"Will's a son of Apollo, god of many things but mostly the sun."

Will scoffed.

"Yeah, you try buttering me up, di Angelo," he said. "You're cutting no dice here. I'll be giving you a serious medical examination the next moment I can, soldier status be damned. Doctor's orders."

Nico made conscious effort to not blush when he turned to face the Sargent. He saw the head of Brecon Beacons looking at Will curiously.

"You're a doctor, boy?" he addressed Will. The blond gave him a not-impressed look.

"I'm an Apollo kid," he said. "I was born with healing abilities."

"He's the best healer in the Camps," Percy piped up for no reason. "He even made Gloom-and-Doom have three days bed rest."

"I'm not Gloom-and-Doom!" Nico objected. No one looked like they believed him much.

"Hm." The Sargent looked like he was thinking deeply. "You're all exceptionally powerful; we need that kind of strength in the military." He looked up at the ten teenagers. "I don't suppose any of you would consider joining?"

Percy shook his head, pulling Annabeth closer.

"No thanks, man," he replied. "I've had enough fighting for a life-time. I just want to go to school and be slightly more normal than I am."

"We have duties to our Camps," Reyna said. "And while your cause is noble, our fellow demigods need us."

"Plus," Leo added. "This is like, England. And we're all American."

"I would." Hazel looked ready to cry. "To keep an eye on Nico. But I'm a Centurion and besides." She looked at her brother sadly, "I don't think he'd want me to live like he does."

Nico was grateful. His friends had fought too many times to follow him to the army. They had lives of their own. Nico knew he wasn't anything without his fighting: whether it was in the Underworld, at Camp, or defending the mortals from more attacks. He supposed he was like Alex – too deep in to get out.

"I will."

Nico wasn't sure whether to throw up or dance in that moment. His heart seemed to stutter in shock and he whipped around to see Will Solace pushing through the others to stand beside him at the Sargent's desk.

"I was headed to be a combat doctor anyway," he said. "While I've only worked with demigods hands-on, I can still heal mortals just as well. And besides." He looked sternly at Nico. "Someone needs to keep a certain adrenaline-junkie in check."

"Burn," Alex whispered.

"Solace," Nico growled.

"I'm glad you offered," the Sargent said. "Of you all I think a good medic is what we needed most. Especially since I seem to have a pair of suicidal shits in my elite Unit." He glared at Alex and Nico.

"That's out of line," Alex argued. "I'm not suicidal!"

"No," Nico said, "you just piss off the wrong people." Nico smirked at Alex as he huffed and turned away. On the inside though, Nico was beaming like a ray of sun. Will would get to work with him. He was, of course, terrified at the same time, but he was overrun by a bright feeling that Will cared enough about him to change country.

Apparently Jason was having the same thoughts because when he and Nico locked eyes, the cheeky shit winked and gave him a thumbs up. Nico flipped him off before facing the front again.

K-Unit cabin was a lot more cramped now that there was three teenagers living in it.

Sargent Sanders had positioned Will with Nico, Wolf, Snake, Eagle, Jaguar and Alex since, "K-Unit has superior experience with skilled kids and half-gods." No one really argued. After two shadow-jumps with Nico – after which Will had fussed over him for a little – the new member had all the supplies and belongings he needed. He kept his own health bag with him instead of in the infirmary, since it was not only full of normal medical things but also a dozen bags of ambrosia and flasks of nectar. He didn't want some mortal doctor feeding it to his patient only to watch the guy burst into flames. It was really only for Nico.

By the time they were finished settling Will in, the son of Apollo had become fast-friends with Snake. K-Units medic was glad to have another doctor on hand because, as far as he was concerned, his Unit was a whole bunch of idiots who got themselves injured frequently.

Will and Nico had promised the others they would visit in the summer, and bring Alex too. Percy and Jason had made them swear up and down not to die before then and to stay at Camp Half-Blood as long as they could. They then looked at Sargent Sanders, who shrugged and said every soldier got a month off in the summer so they could go then.

When the nine of them were about to leave, Nico had offered to shadow-travel them. Reyna had declined, saying he needed his strength and that they already had a ride. By the time he and Will had gotten back, they were gone.

"Flying horses," they had then heard the Sargent mutter. "What the fuck next? Pixies doing a jig?"

Life around Brecon Beacons was back to normal in days. Having been there themselves, the whole Camp had seen Nico disintegrate Dr Three with his sword and Alex kick him to dust. Since their whole business was about keeping secrets, the Sargent had spoken to them about the whole demigod thing in the strictest confidence – not even MI6 was to know. Nico suffered a few hours of incredulous stares before the soldiers settled down and started making jokes and puns about his codename and how ridiculously fitting it was. Nico resurrected a few skeletons in the dining room to chase one Unit out. He wasn't able to decide whether the men were squealing with joy or terror.

When Will was introduced as a new doctor, first there was scepticism. Then the Sargent had said he was a son of Apollo and the best mortal healer in the world. Will had blushed and stuttered that that wasn't true.

"Kid, you're a demigod," Sanders had told him, in front of the Camp. "Therefore, you're automatically better than any human doctors because of your abilities. And that Percy boy said you were the best medic in their Camps. Logically, that puts you at the top. Now stop denying yourself and accept it."

As far as pep-talks go it wasn't the best, but it put a straightness to Will's spine. Nico wasn't sure whether he was allowed to burst with pride – like when Hazel had been made Centurion – but he did anyway, leading Alex in a spasmodic dance of happiness. No one had seen him grin so wide before, Will especially. Brecon had changed him, and the son of Apollo could see it was definitely for the better.

I see Alex, Nico and Will being best buds forever and ever. It's this story's headcanon. Officially. No one will change my mind. I love this chapter.
