Revenge
"Wait, so no more Rafferty?" Lacey was asking Shay curiously. She had come over while Kelly was out to hang out with Lacey, just the two of them like they used to. Katie had just recently left for Colorado and Dawson had family visiting from out of town. With the freezing weather and snow outside they were staying in, starting with watching movies but ending up talking on the couch with piles of blankets and pillows.
"Suspended," Shay nodded after explaining the recent incident, sipping hot chocolate. "But, now Dawson can come back..."
"And how happy is she about that?" Lacey asked skeptically, knowing Dawson had recently failed her physical exam and therefore couldn't become a firefighter. They all knew that it happened, but didn't say anything to Dawson about it because they knew that she didn't want to talk about it. All she said was that she was going to take the test and try again.
"You know her," Shay agreed.
"Well, I'm happy," Lacey said in an attempt to lighten the mood. "Disliking Rafferty was exhausting." Shay had managed to get along with her as best as she could, but Lacey still didn't like the things she had said about Shay being gay.
"Don't get too excited," Shay told her with a slight smile. "Because the new candidate on truck, Jones-"
"God, do we hate her too?" Lacey fake complained and Shay nodded with a laugh.
"Afraid so," Shay nodded.
"Mmm, between Eric and Vince, I'm almost all out of hate," Lacey grumbled now, the conversation getting serious. Eric was no longer an issue for them as he was going away to prison for a long time. It was his cousin though that looked like he was going to get away with something awful.
"Did Katie leave last night?" Shay asked sadly and Lacey nodded.
"She's staying with some friends while she job hunts," Lacey explained. "She seemed ok...considering." Shay nodded. "Mostly, I think she was happy to get out of the city for awhile."
"How's Kelly?" Shay asked now, knowing Kelly had been on edge since Erin said that they had to let Keeler go.
"Ah, when I woke up last night he was looking at town house listings," Lacey told her, with Kelly wanting to move them yet again after they'd moved so much the year before. He wanted to now out of paranoia since Eric had previously broken in, which meant the family probably knew where they lived. "Also, I'm spending all of your shifts at la casa de Darden," she added, since Kelly never wanted her to be alone, which she understood. "And right now he's out with Clarke and Capp." She paused. "And that makes me uneasy."
"They're just hanging out like us right now," Shay said and Lacey gave her a look.
"Clarke got busted for assault last year," Lacey informed her. "And Capp's..."
"Kinda scary?" Shay offered.
"Yeah, but I don't know why," Lacey said, appreciating that her friend understood both half smiling. "He's always so nice to me."
"Well, if you ask me, Keeler's got it coming," Shay said if the guys were planning any kind of revenge.
"Trust me," Lacey assured her. "I'd love to knock that stupid smirk right off his face. But, I don't want the guys to get in trouble either." They both stopped when there was a knock at the door.
"It's me!" Erin called from the other side.
"Coming!" Shay said, going to unlock the door. "Hey," she greeted her with a quick kiss before leading the way over to the couch. Shay climbed over the back to get back to her spot while Erin leaned back against it.
"Wanna join?" Lacey offered.
"I can't stay," Erin sighed, looking super serious which made Lacey nervous; she never liked when Erin had this look because it was usually bad news with the case. "I was actually wondering if Kelly was around?"
"Ah, he's out," Lacey shrugged. She knew they were going over to Clarke's, but she wasn't exactly sure what for. "What's up?"
"Something with Katie's case?" Shay asked hopefully.
"There's not a case as of right now," Erin admitted sadly. "I'm trying to figure out who the family knows in the department, and Voight's got us keeping an eye on Keeler..."
"You don't seem so sure you'll catch him," Lacey said worriedly and Erin sighed.
"Vince isn't Eric," Erin explained her concern. "Eric flew off the handle, showed up places where you were repeatedly, more or less picked that fight at the firehouse. But Vince knows he's got away with something, we pretty much need a confession to get anything. He's more careful, he's not going to give us a reason to bring him in." She bit her lip. "And that's why I'm worried about Kelly."
"What do you mean?" Shay asked in confusion.
"I mean he didn't get busted with assaulting Eric because Eric violated the restraining order," Erin said. "He was a threat to Kelly and Lacey. Vince isn't going to do that, Kelly's going to have to go after him. And, if that's the case..." She trailed off, shaking her head. "I would have to arrest him." She groaned as her phone for work started ringing. "I'm sorry," Erin apologized. "I didn't want to just throw this stuff on you and run, but-"
"It's ok," Lacey promised.
"C'mon, I'll walk you out," Shay said, getting up now. "Are you ok?" she asked Lacey who nodded. She followed Erin outside, walking silently by her side as they got to her car down the block.
"I'm sorry," Erin repeated.
"I know," Shay nodded reassuringly. "Just, um..." She sighed. "Please catch him," she said lightly, getting Erin to smile. "I've known Kelly for a really long time," Shay added on a serious note. "And I know he sees Keeler as a threat to his family. To his girl and his baby after he's already hurt his little sister." She crossed her arms over herself in the cold. "There's no talking him down, not till he feels like they're safe."
"Hey," Kelly greeted both Lacey and Shay later that afternoon, coming in from the cold and rubbing his hands together. "What are you two up to?"
"This," Lacey laughed from the couch.
"All day," Shay smiled, though she was going to have to go into Molly's soon.
"I'm jealous," Kelly said as he came over to where they were sitting, jacket still on. "It's freezing out there."
"There's hot chocolate," Lacey told him after he kissed her and he gratefully went into the kitchen to get some. She got up from the couch slowly, wearing her sweatpants and one of Kelly's CFD shirts for her and Shay's lazy day in. She was following him and Shay came too, both knowing something was up.
"If you guys wanted some, I could have gotten it," Kelly said lightly but they both waved it off like they didn't want it.
"How was hanging out with Clarke and Capp?" Lacey asked.
"Fine," Kelly shrugged casually. "Same as you guys. Just maybe less blankets," he laughed a little.
"What did you guys do?" Shay asked.
"Watched the game," Kelly shrugged and both girls looked at him skeptically.
"There's no football or baseball right now," Shay commented.
"And, the Blackhawks don't play till tomorrow," Lacey added on. Both of their faces had an expression that said either tell me or don't lie. They knew something was up.
"Don't worry about it," Kelly said, knowing he was caught.
"Kelly," Lacey said seriously.
"I'm handling it, all right?" Kelly told them both.
"Erin's handling it," Shay assured him. "The police are taking care of it."
"Shay, I love Erin," Kelly promised. "But the police are the ones that let Keeler go."
"It was one person his family knows, and Erin's finding out who that is," Lacey insisted.
"And he's still out there," Kelly stopped her. "While Katie had to move out to Colorado to get away from here, from him and what he did to her."
"Kelly, I am so sorry about what happened to your sister," Lacey told him now. "But, what happens when you get arrested?"
"I'm not-"
"Then it's just us out here," Shay cut him off. "Me, Erin, and Lacey versus the Keeler family," she told him bluntly, hoping that it sank in. "While you're in jail."
"I get it," Kelly told her as there was a knock at the door. "All right?" He opened the door now, surprised at who was there. "Dad?"
"Oh no," Lacey murmured under her breath to Shay. The last time they saw Benny was when they first found out about Katie, before he went back home to Beth and Kelly's younger half brothers. That was after the big confrontation about how Benny had clearly cheated on Kelly's mom since they had been married when Katie would have been born. Even though Kelly adored his younger sister, it didn't change anything how he felt about what his dad did to his mom.
"Would you hate me if I left?" Shay asked her, her shift at Molly's about to start.
"No, we'll be fine," Lacey promised as Kelly had let Benny in.
"Ok," Shay nodded, grabbing her stuff to leave and greeting Benny quickly before letting herself out.
"Lacey," Benny smiled as she hugged him, saying hello. "How are you sweetheart?"
"I'm good," Lacey said as she pulled back. Kelly was none to happy to have his dad here and she knew it was about to blow up at any moment.
"The last time I saw you, you weren't even showing yet," Benny laughed as he observed her. "Now look at you."
"I know, I'm a house," Lacey said lightly, resting her hand on her stomach.
"You're stunning, right Kelly?" Benny said.
"Always," Kelly agreed, though his voice was low as he went to grab a water from the refrigerator.
"Mother's glow and all," Lacey commented, feeling Zoe kicking her again. "We found out she's a girl," Lacey said now, breaking the silence.
"I think your father told me," Benny nodded, though he appreciated Lacey telling him. "Zoe, right?" She nodded now. "I didn't know about this though," Benny said, taking Lacey's hand and looking at her ring. He looked over at his son now as he let Lacey's hand go. "When did this happen?"
"Couple months ago," Kelly said simply; he didn't want Benny at the wedding or in their lives at all for that matter.
"I was going to call," Lacey said, trying to break the tension. "My nephews are in it, I didn't know if Chris and Sam would want to be ring bearers or something..." She was referring to Kelly's twin half brothers that were born in the year after Benny married Beth, which came rather quickly after the death of Kelly's mom. Kelly had always thought it was too quickly, but he let it go. What happened with Katie's mom though wasn't forgivable in Kelly's eyes.
"I think they'd like that a lot," Benny nodded, knowing his younger sons were always excited the few times Kelly came up to visit or sent cards on their birthdays. "They could come with Beth," Benny added on now for Kelly's benefit as anyone could see that Kelly didn't want him there. It was painfully obvious to Benny who had just found out they were engaged for several months now. "I wouldn't have to be there."
"Benny," Lacey tried to say.
"Marriage isn't that important to him," Kelly stopped Lacey. "Right dad?"
"Kelly," Lacey said now.
"What are you doing here?" Kelly asked his dad, ignoring Lacey for the moment.
"I wanted to see your sister," Benny told him. "Her mother called-"
"And you couldn't have come last week when she was missing, or when she was in the hospital?" Kelly snapped at him.
"Her mother asked me not to," Benny explained.
"And you're so good at respecting women, right dad?" Kelly asked sarcastically. "You respected the hell out of mom."
"This isn't about me and your mother."
"No, it's about you pretending to care about the daughter you had while you were still married to her," Kelly argued.
"I'm not pretending," Benny argued back. "I want to help."
"We don't need it," Kelly snapped. "We've gotten along fine without you. Besides, Katie left yesterday." Benny shook his head in disbelief. There had to be something he could do to help.
"I can call some people," Benny tried to offer now.
"There's nothing you can do to help," Kelly stopped him. "And, again, I don't want it." They fell into silence. "You can go," Kelly told him finally.
"I don't want things to be like this with us Kelly," Benny was saying now, not ready to go.
He wanted not only to help with what happened to his daughter, but also to fix things with his son. He knew that what he had done was wrong, but it had been years since it happened and months since Kelly found out. He had hoped that, after some time passed, things could get back to how they were before. The way things looked now though, he wasn't going to be around for the wedding or his grandchild because Kelly didn't want anything to do with him.
"Just go home dad," Kelly insisted. "You've got Beth and the boys now, all right? They're your second chance to get it right."
"Kelly," Lacey said seriously.
"No, it's all right," Benny promised and Lacey sighed.
"I'll call Beth this weekend," Lacey told him now as Benny prepared to go. Kelly didn't say anything as his father finally left, though he knew Lacey was going to have something to say about it by the look on her face. "What was that?" She asked it gently though, not accusingly.
"What would you do if you found out your dad had kids with someone else?" Kelly asked.
"I know Kel," Lacey agreed sympathetically. "But things were really good with Katie and-"
"Ok, the fact that Katie's a sweet girl doesn't change that my dad cheated on my mom," Kelly interrupted her and she sighed.
"I know," Lacey agreed again. "I just think..." She stopped herself, not sure how to word it.
"What?" Kelly insisted.
"I know you're mad at him," Lacey assured him. "I know what he did was wrong. But, right now, I don't think you should be looking at him as the guy that cheated on your mom."
"Then what should I be looking at him like?" Kelly snapped.
"Don't get mad at me because of everything else that's going on," Lacey snapped back at him and he backed off, sighing and rubbing his forehead in frustration. "Look, he's a guy that just found out his daughter was kidnapped and assaulted. What if it-"
"Don't say it," he stopped her, knowing she was going to say what if it was him and Zoe. "Because I wouldn't take a week to show up here," Kelly argued. "She was missing and hurt a week ago. He's just now finding the time to come down here and see her, after she's already left town." He shook his head. "What's my dad going to do about it anyway?"
"What are you going to do about it?" Lacey changed the subject now.
"Don't worry about it," Kelly told her.
"I'm serious Kelly," Lacey stopped him from leaving the room. "Because right now, with how you're acting-"
"How am I acting?" Kelly interrupted.
"Like you're going to kill somebody," Lacey argued. "Look, I know Keeler deserves to have the shit kicked out of him. But...it doesn't get to work like that."
"You sound like Erin," Kelly commented sarcastically.
"And I'm afraid you're not going to stop at kicking his ass," Lacey admitted now.
"Erin didn't go there," Kelly said now and they both fell silent, aggravated with each other. Lacey sighed, looking over at the clock and noticing the time.
"I'm supposed to go have dinner with my mom," Lacey reminded him now. "Are you going to be ok?"
"You mean, am I going to be able to keep from killing anyone?" Kelly asked her. "Yeah, I think I'll manage."
"Maybe I'll just stay there," Lacey grumbled to herself as she walked away.
"Lace," Kelly sighed apologetically but she had already left the room.
