Chapter 8
Different
"Just give me a reason, just a little bit's enough. Just a second, we're not broken, just bent, and we can learn to love again."
As they finally headed back towards the house, Klaus kept his arm wound tightly around Caroline, partially in order to support and in part because he couldn't seem to make himself let go of her just yet. Either way, she didn't seem to mind. The storm around them seemed to have settled, their clothes once again getting soaked. Klaus quickened his pace, pulling the blonde along with him firmly. He gently pushed her through his front door first, before entering his house himself and pulling it shut. He helped Caroline out of her coat, hanging it up to dry as she wandered further inside, clearly looking for something.
Klaus found himself doing the same, wondering where the rest of the Mikaelson clan might have gone off to. I'm not sure I can handle more of their infuriating questioning tonight. Luckily, his siblings knew him well and seemed to have taken their leave, if the note Rebekah had put on the hallway table, stating that they went to a hotel so he and Caroline could 'figure things out', was anything to go by. But she demands my presence tomorrow, and she wants to me to arrange for Caroline to spend more time with us.
He had the distinct feeling that this was a recipe for disaster. There really wasn't too much he could do about it now, however.
"My siblings are gone for the night; we don't have to worry about them for a while." Klaus called out to his companion. The blonde turned back to him, shoulders sagging in clear relief. Seems I am not the only one whose had enough.
Caroline approached him, rubbing her hands over arms. "I'm sorry for all the drama." She said, somewhat sheepishly.
He shook his head. "The fault lies with me, Caroline, you have nothing to apologize for."
"Well, I could've at least avoided getting us both soaked… again, in my case."
"Yes, that might have been wise." He replied mischievously, smiling. The both lapsed into silence again for a moment, unsure. Klaus decided to take a chance, not wanting her to leave just yet, knowing that this is what she would insist on if he didn't step in. "Look, why don't you take a shower and warm up, by the time you're done, your clothes should be finished drying. I'll leave them outside the bathroom for you." He suggested, meeting her eyes carefully.
"O-Ok." She said after a long moment. Just as he was about to turn to go and prepare the necessary things, she reached out and grabbed his hand. "Klaus?" He froze, surprised. Caroline had never seemed to be one to initiate physical contact, and certainly not with him. Regardless, he turned, allowing himself the small luxury of holding her hand more closely in his, his thumb stoking the soft skin of it. He looked to Caroline questioningly, and she simply smiled at him. "Thank you." She finally said, genuine.
"You're welcome, love." He replied, tightening his fingers around hers briefly before untangling them and taking a step back. "The bathroom's upstairs, adjoining the first room to the right. Everything you need should be in there; I will leave your clothes right outside the door."
As soon as she nodded her understanding, Klaus turned away from her, suddenly desperately needing even more distance between them. I cannot allow myself to fall prey to my feelings any more than I already have.
Regardless, he couldn't help but to feel her eyes following him with every step he took away from her.
Caroline sighed as the heated water of the shower hit her bare skin, allowing the warmth to seep into her. This whole night had simply exhausted her, but her mind was strangely peaceful for the time being. Klaus and I, we got things out in the open finally. Still, some of what he said was… shocking, but not exactly in a bad way. It was just odd to think that Klaus actually regretted letting her 'out of his sight' as he had put it.
There's something between us. It's undeniable.
But not irresistible, Caroline told herself firmly. I can't let this get any more complicated than it already is. Especially not now. But that doesn't mean I'm going to cut him out completely. She glanced down at her swollen stomach. No, definitely not.
She ran a hand over her belly, wondering at who the little person in there would turn out to be. Either way, Caroline had the feeling that her baby was going to get two devoted parents after all.
Smiling to herself, she turned the water off, wrapping one of the fluffy, clearly expensive towels around herself. She was quick to grab the clothes that Klaus had left outside the door for her. She felt relieved at changing back into her own things, though she did note that there was a thick sweatshirt that had definitely not been there before. Shrugging, she pulled it on over top of her own things, the sleeves slightly to long on her. She snuggled deeper into it, smiling slightly at Klaus' forethought. He probably knew I'd still be cold.
Slowly, she made her way back downstairs, allowing her eyes to trail all over Klaus' home. She had to admit that it was rather beautiful here. She quickly found Klaus back in the parlor that they had been in before, noticing that the pizza had finally arrived in her absence. Seating herself next to him, they began eating in comfortable silence.
"Oh thank god for pizza." Caroline practically moaned, not having realized how ravenous she was.
Klaus raised a brow in her direction. "Enjoying it, are you?"
She rolled her eyes playfully. "Like you aren't? Besides, you wouldn't believe the cravings you get when you're pregnant."
"No, I shouldn't think I would."
This time her eye roll was genuine. "Haha." She replied with heavy sarcasm. Klaus simply chuckled, amused by the whole situation.
Finishing up her food, Caroline stood up, looking around curiously. She approached the glass doors she's seen before, once again peering through, wanting to see the library again. She didn't feel Klaus coming up behind her.
"Do you want a tour?" He asked right next to her ear. The blonde jumped, turning to find her face mere inches away from his. She soon found herself distracted by the proximity, noting the ever-changing color of his eyes. She took a shuddering breath, the air between them filling with tension.
Klaus smirked, amused by her obvious distraction. "So…?" He prodded after a moment, trying not to let show how her closeness was affecting him as well.
Caroline nearly had to physically shake herself out of it, her cheeks warming slightly. "Oh yeah, sure, that'd be great." She said in a rush.
Klaus smiled widely, comically offering his arm after a slight bow, causing the blonde to let out a startled laugh. She shook her head but allowed him to lead her, placing her hand in the crook of his elbow without hesitance.
"Well then, I certainly shan't keep you waiting." Klaus said.
"Your home is amazing." Caroline practically gushed as Klaus showed her the upper floor, meandering through the hallways without rush. After touring the extensive ground floor, the blonde had thought nothing else could surprise her. Just the kitchen and its expanse of shining appliances and seemingly unused countertops was impressive. Not to mention the library; the minute she had stepped through the door, Caroline had fallen in love. The windows were large and, she knew, must have lit the room beautifully when the sun was out. The bookcases were large and heavy, but tastefully chosen. And then there were the books themselves; Klaus seemed to have everything in there, from first editions to brand new novels. It was a wonder the man had been able to pull her out of there to show her the rest of the ground floor, including the media room which she knew Tyler would have been extremely jealous of.
So, yes, Caroline had thought the rest of the house would not impress her as much. But then Klaus had shown her the various guest bedrooms and they were utterly beautiful, each room with it's own style and yet they all looked like they belonged in the same home, as well.
"Thank you," Klaus said, responding to her compliment, "though I don't know if I can call it home just yet."
At this, Caroline looked up at him curiously, finding his eyes already watching her steadily. "How come?" She wondered.
"I feel it's missing something. It is rather… empty."
Ah of course. This was the one thing Caroline felt as well. Though the house looked picture-perfect, to her it didn't feel that way, and apparently it didn't to Klaus either. It seemed to be more of a showpiece than anything. Such a large house for just one man.
It must be lonely.
Not knowing how else to reply, Caroline tightened her hand around his arm briefly before asking to continue in their little tour, to which Klaus quickly agreed, uncomfortable by the turn their conversation had taken.
"Oh... oh, hey, what's through there?" Caroline asked a while later, looking at the half-open door that led to a set of stairs. She began to make her way up them, letting go of Klaus' arm, curiosity eating at her.
"Hold on, Caroline, perhaps now is not the…" Klaus tried as he followed her.
The second the blonde reached the top of the stairs, she gasped, her eyes widening in wonder. The room was bathed in soft light from the slanted roof windows, the moon finally visible from behind the waning rain, just bright enough for Caroline to be able to see the art that the room was filled with. There were all sorts of pieces scattered about, sketches or paintings, styles varying from classical to surreal.
Klaus sighed behind her, recognizing that Caroline wouldn't be leaving his inner sanctuary any time soon. Oddly though, it didn't bother him too much, in fact, he found he rather liked sharing a more intimate part of himself with her. So he reached over and turned on the overhead light, the blonde having to blink several times for her eyes to adjust to the sudden brightness.
But when they did, she was finally able to see the art in all it's glory. "Wow, these are beautiful…" She murmured, almost reverently, as her fingers whispered over some sketches that covered one of the tables, and then she noted the other materials placed around as well. Easels and paints and other art supplies, and it finally occurred to her. This isn't just an art room, it's a studio. She whirled on Klaus, surprise clear in her voice."Wait a minute, did you do these?"
He shrugged slightly, not looking the least like the confident Klaus she was used to. "I dabble, on occasion." He admitted.
"This is more than just dabbling, Klaus, you have some real talent." She told him honestly. It was true; though she was no expert, his art seemed to have real feeling in it.
"I- Thank you." He finally replied, somewhat stiffly, as if unused to being praised on his work.
"I guess that's why you went into art and antiquities, huh?" She asked after a long moment, running her fingers gently on the giant landscape currently occupying one of the easels. She threw a smile back at Klaus.
"Yes, actually, though it's not nearly as glamorous as it can seem; mostly just involves paperwork. My bar, however, now that is some fun."
"You have a bar? What's it called?" Again Caroline was surprised; there's so much I don't know about him.
"Originals; it's a bit of an inside joke between my siblings and myself." Klaus replied, mirth in his voice.
"I've heard of that place! It's club too, right?" The nightlife in Richmond isn't exactly the most exciting, but this place is supposed to be pretty exclusive. I can't believe Klaus owns it.
He nodded. "Yes."
"Wow, there really is more to you than meets the eye." She let out truthfully, staring him in the eye. He was an enigma, Klaus was, but Caroline liked being able to solve little bits of him at a time. But I can't get let it all get to my head, we have to keep our boundaries clear, there's no crossing the line, not in our situation.
"I shall take that as compliment." Klaus said now, almost questioningly.
"Good. It was meant as one." She smiled, and his lips turned up in response as well.
She hadn't noticed the decreasing distance between them until Klaus very gently tucked a stray curl of her still damp hair behind her ear. She sucked in a silent breath as his thumb glided softly over her cheek, before his hand fell back to his side. The blonde felt an odd sense of loss at that. "Well, Caroline, I have a feeling that you are exactly as you seem. Beautiful and full of light." Her insides warm at his sincere tone, his blue eyes burning into her.
"Is that a good thing? Or bad?" She found herself whispering, cocking her head slightly. Boundaries, Caroline tried to remind herself to no degree of success.
Klaus half-smiled, eyes darkening the smallest bit. "Oh, it's good. Definitely, good." His voice had deepened, causing an unexpected shiver to run up her spine.
Finally, finally she snapped herself out of it and very purposely took a step back. She registered disappointment and something else she'd rather not think about in his eyes for the briefest moment before all emotion became invisible. Still, she couldn't stop herself from linking her arm through his and pulling him along, not liking that look in his eyes. "Well then thank you. Now, I think you still have to show me the rest of this floor, right?" She asked, smiling brightly at him.
"Whatever the lady wishes."
"I can't believe I agreed to this." Caroline groaned for the fifth time the next day. Katherine looked at her, clearly unimpressed. The blonde had somewhat forgotten her friend's tendency to be ruthless in times like this.
"Oh come on Care; you're going to need to really get to know them at some point. Why not now?" She replied, with a prolonged roll of her brown eyes. When Klaus had asked her if she would meet up with him and his family after dropping her off yesterday night, she hadn't given herself a moment's thought and immediately said yes. It had seemed like such a good idea at the time, the importance of family and all that, but now…
"I've already met his siblings? Do I really need to do more?" She asked, almost petulantly.
"Yep. Look you're giving birth to their niece or nephew, it's kind of their right to at least know a bit about you." Caroline supposed it was a good thing that she'd asked Katherine to come over and help her get ready; she was definitely forceful when she needed to be, and what she said made sense in principle… but, it's still going to be hard.
"Is it?" The blonde asked, almost meekly.
Kat stood up, gripping her old friend's shoulders and giving her a no-nonsense look. "Yes, now stop being such a whiny bitch and just deal with it. Count yourself lucky that you only have three of the Mikaelson brood to deal with." She said with her usual flair, her voice tough but her eyes understanding. I don't thing I realized how much I missed having her around until now, Caroline found herself thinking. She was really glad in that moment that she had asked Kat to come over and help her get ready, and to do some catching up in the meantime.
"There are more?" Caroline asked after a quiet moment, adjusting her light blue dress over her belly. I'm really starting to look whale-ish, just fantastic. Baby, I hope you realize how much trouble your causing your mom. She ran a hand over stomach, a small smile at her lips despite her thoughts.
"Yep, two more brothers, Kol and Finn." The blonde distantly heard her friend's answer. "Finn's a bore but Kol, now he takes a lot of work. So, the way I see it you lucked out with just Rebekah and Elijah. 'Lijah will try to like you for my sake as well as Klaus'… and you already managed to talk to 'Beks." Katherine came to her side, pushing some of her blonde hair over her shoulder calmly, helping adjust her dress. She makes a good point.
Still, Caroline sighed. "Great." Quickly she put the finishing touches on her outfit as the brunette stepped back and grabbed her handbag, trying not look as nervous as she was. She steeled herself. Get it together, Care.
"Let's just go, Kat." She said determinedly, eyes flashing.
"Finally. I would say it's hard to believe that pregnancy has made you take even longer to get ready, but then I'd be lying; Little Miss Forbes can't be anything less than perfect, after all."
Caroline just smiled, though her mind was still full of turmoil.
As she walked into the fancy, upper-class restaurant, Caroline tried not to look like she didn't belong there. You were Miss Mystic Falls, you can do this. She walked close to Katherine's side, envious of the brunette's natural confidence and charisma. And she can literally make any outfit look good.
At the front the maître-d immediately led them to a private room upon hearing Katherine utter the name 'Mikaelson'. Unfortunately, Caroline felt her nerves get the better of her and her stomach was twisting horribly. When they arrived at the table, she immediately felt all eyes on her. Elijah sat to the right, Rebekah next to him and Klaus after that; there were two empty seats between the brothers. As her eyes roved over them, the blonde tried to let them linger to long on Klaus, her thoughts drifting back to the night before. So much is just… different. After a prolonged awkward moment in which the blonde was cursing Klaus and his ridiculous plans, his brother stood up and approached them. After quickly pecking Kat's cheek in greeting, he turned to her.
"Welcome, Ms. Forbes." He said, voice deep and serious as he reached for her hand.
"Elijah, right?" Caroline smiled as she tried to look casual and comfortable.
He nodded his head slightly, the corner of his lip pulling up. "Correct."
"It's nice to meet you under better circumstances." The blonde then said with a laugh, letting her hand fall out of his strong grip. With those words it seemed as if the tension dissipated, everyone breathing a sigh of relief; Elijah even chuckled, before coming to her side and placing an oddly comforting hand on her shoulder, leading her to the others.
"Yes it is indeed; please have a seat." He pulled out her chair for her, the one empty seat right next to Klaus; Katherine quickly took the other, sitting to her left.
"Thank you." She said sincerely as he assisted her.
"I believe you've already talked to Rebekah." The eldest Mikaelson continued as he made his way to his own seat, gesturing to his little sister as he did so.
Caroline nodded, trying to ignore the burn of her neighbor's eyes on her. "Just a little. It's nice to see you again." She smiled, keeping her gaze firmly on the other blonde. She felt Klaus shift next her, coming the tiniest bit closer to her.
Rebekah arched a perfect brow, her blue eyes so similar to her brother's scanning her carefully. Finally a smile lit up her face, making her seem years younger. "Hm. Quite." Then everyone seemed to break into conversation, Katherine and Elijah quietly discussing something with Rebekah making some input now and then.
She felt a warm hand on her thigh, it's weight on her reassuring. She finally turned her gaze to meet Klaus', finding him smiling down at her. "Caroline, how are you today, love?" He asked softly, leaning closer to her.
"Good, I think…" She swallowed somewhat nervously, her eyes drifting momentarily away from him to flit to his siblings. "At least, for now. Hopefully everything will continue to stay good…"
His hand trailed down her leg to where her hand was resting, squeezing it gently between his fingers; Caroline felt a tingle run up her spine, setting her body alight. "Don't worry, you have both Katherine and myself." Klaus reassured, mirth twinkling in his blue eyes. "Besides, from what I've seen of you I am quite certain you will be able to manage my siblings. Now, just relax and by yourself, sweetheart."
Caroline smiled gratefully. "Thank you." She whispered, finally squeezing his hand back.
The dinner went surprisingly well, Caroline found herself thinking as Klaus guided her out of the restaurant and into the cold night air. Though it had started off rather stiltedly, she had found that once things got going it was much easier. Elijah and Rebekah weren't simpletons though and they didn't let her get off too easily; they often threw thinly veiled questions at her, about who she was, her plans and the like, as if trying to make sure she was genuine. Well, Caroline didn't become queen b of Mystic Falls High through only sunshine and rainbows; she held her own and by the end it seemed that both Mikaelson siblings approved of her, much to her relief.
Still, despite the relative success of the evening, Caroline couldn't wait to unwind at home. She followed as Klaus led her to his car, having agreed to let him drive her to her apartment so Katherine could back with Elijah and Rebekah. She smiled at him when he opened her door for her, helping her in. Always the gentleman.
Soon enough, they were on their way, talking to each other softly. When the topic of conversation turned back to his family, Klaus cracked a smile, chuckling slightly. "You are truly impressive, Caroline Forbes, there are not many women who would be able to manage my family as well as you." He said lowly, turning to her for a moment with eyes full of pride.
Caroline felt her heart beat faster at the way her name fell from his lips, a blush rising to her cheek at his compliment. "Well, after dealing with you these past couple weeks, it would be a shame if I'd learned nothing." She replied with a teasing with a smile.
Another laugh. "Indeed…" He slowed the car as they reached her apartment. "Here we are." He stated.
They collapsed into silence, neither wanting to move just yet. Caroline looked down for a moment, a hand over her stomach, wondering at the child that was hiding inside. She then turned her gaze to the father of that child, finding herself being sucked into the utter blueness of his eyes.
Maybe it's time you let him in…
She smiled, somewhat hesitantly. "Do you want to come up?"
Klaus' answering smile was all she needed to know she had made the right decision.
Caroline smiled at Klaus nervously as she unlocked her front door. Why did I do this? Why did I invite him? Oh this was a bad idea. Oh what am I even doing? Do I really want cross this line? Despite the numerous doubts and worries running through the blonde's head, there was one very simple answer that echoed around her mind.
Yes.
She opened the door, showing Klaus in, her heart fluttering nervously. She placed a hand on her stomach to steady herself, thinking about her baby. No matter what happens, I'll still have you. She smiled slightly, entering her apartment with renewed enthusiasm, quickly tucking her coat away as her guest wandered around.
He ran a large hand over the back of her worn couch, staring at the photos she had hanging here and there. He turned to her, a small smile gracing his handsome face. "You have a lovely home, Caroline." He told her quietly.
Her heart warmed at his sincerity. "Thanks, though it really is nothing compared to yours." This is place is like a fifth the size of yours.
But, Klaus shook his head, letting his gaze drift around her living room once again before returning it back to hers. "No, it's warm."
Something in the tone of his voice nearly broke her heart; it was just so vulnerable… so wistful. She reached forward and squeezed his forearm in understanding. He turned to her and looked slightly embarrassed at his lapse, quickly hiding it under a cool façade. Caroline just smiled and stood back, deciding to change the subject.
She walked to the kitchen, looking out over the counter separating it from the living room to him. "So, can I get you anything? Coffee? Tea? Juice?"
Klaus considered it for a moment, coming to stand across from her at the counter. "Tea, if it's no trouble." Immediately, the blonde cracked a smile, laughing to herself. Of course he'd ask for tea. "What's funny?" He asked, looking adorably confused.
It only caused her to laugh harder. "You're just so… English." She struggled to get out through her amusement.
Comprehension entered his blue eyes and his own grinned widened. "Ah, did the accent give me away?" He asked her teasingly, a smirk playing at his lips. Caroline only shook her head ruefully and turned to reach up into one of the wall cabinets and grab some mugs. Only as she did, she felt a sudden weird pressure in her stomach.
"OH!" She gasped, dropping one of the mugs on the floor in shock, her hands immediately flying over her belly.
She felt Klaus' own hands instantly go to her shoulders as he peered into her eyes, panicked. "Caroline? Are you alright?" He asked urgently, his thumbs rubbing soothing circles into her skin.
The blonde took a moment, feeling that pressure again and smiled wider than she ever had, finally realizing what it was. "I'm fine, I'm fine." She replied with quiet amazement, feeling the telltale prick of tears in her eyes. Only they weren't tears of sadness, but rather of utter and complete happiness.
"What is it?" Klaus asked, a tone of alarm still in his voice.
She shook her hand, not finding the words to explain and gently took one of his hands in hers, placing it over her swollen belly and covering it with her own. She felt his fingers move slightly under hers as he looked at her curiously. And then the pressure came again and an expression of pure wonder came across his face. He looked at her in unadulterated amazement.
"Is that…?" He began softly, trailing off.
Caroline smiled, her throat tight with tears. "Yeah, it is." She confirmed.
Klaus put his hand a bit further against her stomach, stepping even closer to her, ducking his head slightly so there was barely a hair's breadth between them. He smiled widely as he felt the kick again, looking so completely happy that Caroline found herself wondering why she had ever doubted him as a father before.
"That's our child." He whispered in awe, before letting out a breathless laugh. His eyes, which had been so focused on her stomach finally flickered up to her smiling face. "That's our child." He said again, as if he couldn't believe the truth of his words. Caroline nodded, laughing slightly herself.
Klaus shook his head disbelievingly, a wide, real smile lighting up his features. He trailed his other hand from her shoulder up her neck to her cheek, his thumb moving softly against her skin. His eyes burned into hers as some of his excitement calmed into gentle, fragile contentment. "Our child, Caroline." He said once more, seemingly not getting enough of the words.
Caroline leaned slightly into his hand.
Our child.
It was almost midnight by the time Klaus said he should probably leave. After the excitement of feeling their child kick for the first time, the two expecting parents had sat together in Caroline's living room, simply talking to each other, the TV playing softly in the background. For the entire evening, there was barely a moment where Klaus wasn't touching her in someway. His leg resting against hers, his arm around the back of the couch, fingers barely playing with the ends of her hair or running over the bare skin of her shoulder and neck. Or his hand, reaching to touch her stomach, to be close to his, their, child.
And Caroline let him, even encouraged him. There was just something about this moment that she felt needed to be spent in company, Klaus' company.
We created this life together, it's only right that we should witness the milestones together.
But it was more than that. It was just… It was just Klaus. She needed him there.
So now, as they stood together by her front door, Caroline found herself stalling.
"I'll see you then." She said, confirming the plans they'd made to meet again in a couple of days.
Klaus nodded, smiling down at her. "Yes, you will." He said firmly.
Caroline swallowed harshly. "Well, bye then." She replied somewhat awkwardly. I can't let a night like tonight end like this, she found herself thinking. Taking the initiative she stepped forward into his open arms, hugging him to her tightly. His arms went around her waist securely, hand running up and down the small of her back as she buried her face briefly into his chest, locked together in a tight embrace for a brief, blissful moment. They then pulled back almost simultaneously, but only enough so they could look at each other, his arms still wrapped around her. Silently, he shifted his hands up to cup her face, leaning forward to place a fleeting kiss first to her cheek and then to her forehead. Caroline stood stock still, sighing quietly in contentment, her heart beating wildly in her chest. He smiled at her once before stepping back.
"Until then, love." He promised her, turning and opening her front door…
…only to crash into the woman waiting just outside, her hand raised in a knock.
The both of them stared at each other in shock.
Caroline stepped around Klaus, wondering what was going on, when her eyes widened.
"Mom." She said, swallowing. "Hi."
Liz Forbes simply raised a brow.
That's it! Again I am so sorry that it took me so long to update but hopefully this chapter made up for it.
And, yes, I realize that I've just spent three chapters on the same night but I think it'll be probably one of their most important nights together so, because this when they let most of their antagonism go, so…
Anyways, next chapter: some more Original siblings interaction, Liz makes her opinion known, and other surprises.
Thank you for reading and let me know what you think!
