Chapter Twelve: Mission Impossible

Kagome grudgingly followed her cousin and his friends as they led the way toward school. Ever since she'd been attacked so directly by their new enemy, the detectives kept her on twenty four hour surveillance. Glaring at her overprotective body guards, she rolled her eyes when she spotted Yusuke scanning the surrounding area for any potential danger. They were in the middle of the busy city for goodness sake! What could possibly happen to her? The previous event didn't count seeing as she'd willing followed the demon into a secluded warehouse. Her eyes traveled to Kuwabara, who also seemed to be glaring through the throng of people.

She knew they were just trying to keep her safe but weren't they overreacting just a bit? Or was she under reacting? She was slightly curious of her lack of worry regarding the situation but hadn't thought on it much. Shouldn't she be just as, or perhaps more so, worried about her safety than her cousin and his friends? These demons were obviously after her for some reason, though she still didn't know why. Yusuke had been willing enough to explain everything about his job and the happenings of the past few years but refused to leak any information of what he knew about her. She knew her cousin knew why these demons were after her but he explained he rather her know less than more on the subject; for her own safety.

She sighed and her gaze snapped to Kurama as he slowed his pace to walk beside her. He flashed her a comforting smile before turning his attention back to the crowd they were navigating through. The avatar had been acting differently around her lately. Ever since his counterpart kissed her, he seemed more distant but... closer to her somehow. She wasn't sure how that was possible but decided she liked the change. Sure she thought the red head was attractive but she hadn't really thought about passing the friendship line. When he began acting like a brother to her more than a suitor, it helped her grow closer to him and solidify her decision to keep him merely as a friend.

Aside from Yusuke, Kurama was the next person she went to when she was down. She'd even spilled the beans about her pregnancy to him after she made him swear on his life he wouldn't tell her cousin. He admitted that he knew because he'd seen the dozens of tests in the trash can the night he stayed to keep watch over her. Kagome had been embarrassed at first but was able to brush it off after a few comforting words from the avatar. She explained her fear that something happened to her during the time she couldn't remember and he simply listened as she poured her heart out. She'd told the avatar so much that night that she even covered how irritating Hiei was.

Speaking of the little devil, a glare formed on her face as she focused on the hybrid. She still didn't understand why he was helping protect her. He didn't even like her. Hell, he made sure she was aware of that fact on a daily basis. If he wasn't pissing her off at school, he was ruining her peace and quiet at home when it was his turn to watch over her. She guessed the only reason he was helping is because he had no other choice. Kurama had explained to her that he and Hiei were on probation with Reikai and needed to follow orders if they ever wanted their sentence to end. Kagome was positive that if he had the choice, the apparition would probably kill her himself. Somehow, despite her thoughts on the short member of the detectives, she still felt safe in his presence. Still felt that no matter what happened, even if he did hate her, he would keep her safe from harm. Whether that be because he was forced to or because he merely felt like being nice was beyond her but brought her comfort.

"Kags, you ok?"

Turning her attention to her cousin, she smiled to relieve the worried expression on his face. "Yup, just thinking."

"Careful, you might hurt yourself." He snickered as he slowed his pace to walk beside her as well. Draping an arm over her shoulder, he grinned.

She rolled her eyes. "Speak for yourself Suke." she muttered before laughing at the hurt look that splashed across his face. "Oh stop, you know I don't mean it."

He shrugged as they entered through the school gates. "Eh I know, I'm just messin with ya. Had to get a laugh outta you somehow." he winked before picking up his pace and heading toward the front doors of the school. "I'll see you in class cuz."

Kagome nodded as she entered the building and watched Kuwabara and Yusuke make their way in the opposite direction she needed to go. Kurama smiled toward her warmly. "Be safe, I'll see you next hour."

Smiling back toward the avatar, she turned only to roll her eyes. Hiei was nowhere to be seen. You'd think the damn guy would wait for her seeing as they had the same first hour class but no. He had to hold up his reputation as the local asshole. How half the school was swooning over him was a mystery to her. Though wasn't it scientifically proven that women were drawn to assholes more than the nice guys? Shrugging her shoulders, she turned toward her class only to freeze where she stood.

"Utter a sound and I will tear you to pieces."

Kurama sighed as he eased into his chair and closed his eyes. He'd been trying for days to revive Kagome's memories but nothing seemed to work. He even casually threw around the names of her friends from the feudal era as well as the Shikon but it didn't ring any bells. He tried bringing up her unborn child, asking what she was thinking of naming it but was greatly disturbed when she admitted that she may get an abortion. He was able to convince her away from the decision for the time being but he wasn't sure how long his influence would keep her child alive. He started up the topic of a name for the child but the miko seemed sad every time she was reminded of the fetus.

It made sense seeing as she thought she was raped and the child was a mistake... but the real mistake would be for her to rid of the child... She would possibly ruin the future that Taro returned from if she did... The avatar was surprised when he one morning asked the miko if she'd ever thought of baby names and she admitted that she'd always loved the name Taro for a boy. From there she delved into explaining that she was rethinking the abortion again because she wanted her first child to be with the man she loved...

The avatar groaned as he rested his head on his desk. He'd been keeping an extra close eye on her to make sure she didn't make a trip to the abortion clinic. He refused to allow her to kill his nephew but no matter what he tried, he couldn't get her to remember anything before their battle with Kuragari. He couldn't even seem to get the others to remember either. Hiei was disgusted when he brought up even the idea of the hybrid and miko together. Yusuke laughed outright, saying it wouldn't happen in a million years because of how different both of them were.

Hiei continued to push the subject of Kagome's demonic bloodlines. They couldn't sense or smell anything demonic from the miko but the hybrid's eyes hadn't deceived him. He'd seen fangs protrude from her usually human canines and there was no doubt he'd heard her growl. Kurama was baffled as to why her demonic blood seemed to be concealed, just as it was when they first met her. He'd debated if he should take her to Genkai to repeat the process she'd done before but decided against it. Her aura was different from when they first met her. After she'd been attacked by Inuyasha and healed by Yukina, her aura seemed completely pure; that of a miko. But now her aura seemed suppressed, as if invisible chains sealed away her demon side.

The avatar was brought from his musing when Hiei's voice echoed through his mind. 'The miko is gone.'

Rushing out of his classroom before the teacher even entered, he hurried toward Hiei's class only to find him sniffing around the entrance of the school. Yusuke and Kuwabara joined several moments later as Kurama took a whiff of the area. It smelt of the demon that had lured Kagome into the warehouse.

"What's goin on?!" Yusuke demanded, panic visible in his wild eyes.

"She's been taken." Hiei stated before exiting the school. The others quickly followed as the apparition broke into a sprint. He came to a halt when a break in the barrier was found. Yusuke fished for his communicator and flipped it open.

"Yusuk-"

"Yea we know. We're goin to Makai. We'll close to rip once we pass through and call Botan once we find Kagome." he said before shutting the device and shoving it back into his pocket.

"I don't know what you're talking about!" Kagome cried out as she held her bleeding arm close to her body. She glared angrily at the demon before her. He was apparently far more informed of her 'powers' than she was because he wouldn't allow himself to get within several feet of her. He used a sword to torment her and even when she was lucky enough to bring forth her odd power that she still didn't understand or know how to control, he was easily about to dodge away from her.

"This would be so much easier for you if you would just tell me what I want to hear." he sighed as he approached her once more, his katana dragging along the ground.

"If I knew, I would have told you by now! I don't even know what it is you want from me!" she snapped, tears trailing down her cheeks. Cuts and bruises littered her body but the injury on her bicep was by far the deepest and most painful. She wasn't sure why she wasn't in more pain... this demon had been slashing at her for nearly an hour but the only pain she actually felt was from the deeper cut. Everything else seemed so... minimal.

He sighed heavily and shook his head. "Just give me the jewel and I can end your life quick and painlessly."

"What jewel?!"

"The Shikon No Tama you idiotic human! Stop playing dumb with me! I know you are aware of its location!" he snarled as he swung his blade at her once more. The miko leaned back away from the blade fast enough to dodge its sharp edge but wasn't prepared for him to come at her a second time. She winced as his katana pierced her flesh but her attention wavered when she heard a 'cling' on the ground behind her. She cried out when the demon pulled his blade from her side and fell to her knees. Applying pressure to her wound, she turned to look behind her.

"Hm. Well that was quite convenient." The demon smirked as he carelessly dropped his blade to the ground and slowly made his way toward a small glowing pink gem that lay innocently several feet away.

Kagome's eyes widened as her hands flew to her head in an attempt to dull the pain that suddenly made itself present. Images flashed through her mind and within seconds the miko was staring at the Shikon in utter horror. A weight seemed to lift from her aura and the miko glanced behind her to see her tail whipping side to side. Leaping to her feet despite her injures, Kagome dove for the sacred jewel before her enemy could reach it. Cradling it in her hands carefully, she quickly pushed herself to her feet and made an attempt to run but was swiftly denied her escape. Monoki's foot collided with her back and sent her to her hands and knees. The jewel rolled from her grasp and she leapt to her feet once more. Turning sharply, she blocked her opponent's next attack just in time. Growling her displeasure, the miko pushed forth her purification and dove in to attack. Monoki dodge quickly and leapt away from her. Casually reaching down to his waist, he unshealthed a second katana that Kagome only just noticed he possessed. No wonder he was so careless with his first blade.

"I know not of how you suddenly became demon and still possess your miko abilities but no matter. The jewel will be mine." he snarled before charging toward her.

Kagome watched her attacker carefully. He was quick... just as quick as Kuragari was. What was with all these demons and their incredible speed? Focusing on the task at hand, the miko dodged just in the nick of time and dropped into a defensive position. Before she could even prepare herself for his next attack, Monoki's blade was already lodged into her left shoulder. Hissing in pain, she was forced to the ground by the blade embedded in her flesh. He pulled the katana from her shoulder only to drive it into her right thigh. Crying out in agony, she forced herself to remain conscious as he smirked down at her.

"Did you honestly think that just because you possess purification powers, you could beat me?" He snorted as he straightened and turned his back to her, his blade still drilled through her leg. "There is always a way to defeat an impossible enemy you fool." With that said, he triumphantly made his way toward the jewel. Kagome growled angrily as she glared at her enemy's back. He was too strong, too quick, and he didn't let his fear of her miko powers waver him in battle. She couldn't beat him...

"Now the jewel is mine... the power is all mine... and I can wish for whatever my heart desires!" he smirked as he stared at the jewel pulsing brightly. He remembered hearing that one of the jewel's guardian's burned it with her body upon her death. The jewel was then found in the next guardian's body and revived from its dormant state once it was removed from the miko. And now this guardian, who also protected the jewel within her, lost it. Now that the jewel was no long inside her body, it awakened from its slumber and awaited its powers to be used. And he would use that power to its fullest extent. Smirking down at the jewel that lay before him, he reached down to grab it only and watch in horror as a blade crashed down upon the gem.

"NO!"

Kagome used all her strength and pushed as much purification into the blade as she could. She ground her teeth as the jewel and her purification fought until an explosion of power blew her and Monoki back several feet. Turning her gaze back to the jewel as quickly as she could, she sighed in relief.

"What did you think to accomplish with that reckless performance?! You've done nothing but injure yourself further you fool." The demon snapped as he pushed himself to his feet, glaring at her in irritation. His glare disappeared when he saw the relief that flooded her recently pained expression. His gaze whipped to the jewel to see his blade lodged into it. It was glowing even brighter than before and pulsing with power.

Kagome watched as he quickly made his way toward the Shikon. Before he could reach it, a cracking sound filled the room before the jewel suddenly shattered. Another wave of power blasted them and Monoki was thrown into a wall quiet forcefully. Kagome covered her face and stayed low to the ground in order to protect herself from the blunt of the hit but since Monoki was so close, he was far more injured than she was by the explosion. The jewel shattered into millions of pieces, just as it had the first time it was ripped from her. She watched as the shards flew through the walls and ceiling. The building groaned in protest from the impact of the Shikon and the shards forcing their way from its confines. Turning her gaze to the demon, she watched him struggle to his feet.

"You bitch... you'll pay for that..." he growled as he pressed his hand against the wall to keep himself upright. Ceiling tiles began falling to the floor and Kagome looked up. The building was falling apart. Monoki snarled at her before limping toward the exit. "The jewel will be mine! And after this building crushes you, I won't have to worry about you foiling my plans again." he growled over his shoulder before he disappeared from sight.

Kagome tried to get to her feet but couldn't find the strength. She'd used the last of her energy to pierce the jewel with Monoki's katana. Panicking, the miko threw her aura out as far as she could. Maybe the detectives were already searching for her. She sighed in relief when she sensed them just arriving to the collapsing building and laced her aura with urgency, directing it more toward Kurama than the others. With her memories back, she easily realized that Kurama's memories had somehow been returned to him and knew he would understand her message since he could remember the Kuragari situation.

"She's inside!" Kurama panicked as he darted into the building. The others rushed after him and easily found the miko, beaten and bleeding in the middle of the basement floor of the building. Lifting her into his arms quickly, Kurama rushed straight back the way they'd come and hurried out of the building. They escaped just as the structure crumbled to pieces, smoke lifting from the ground. Sighing in relief, Kagome hugged Kurama as tightly as she could without further injuring herself. The avatar placed her on the ground and Yusuke was preparing to give her a good scolding for letting herself get kidnapped when he noticed her physical differences and injuries.

"Kurama back off! That's not Kagome!" he yelled as he directed his spirit gun at her.

Kagome groaned as she glared at her cousin. "Shut up and point that damn finger elsewhere Suke."

"I'm glad to see you in your true form. Have your memories returned as well?" The avatar questioned as he began looking over her wounds.

"Yup... oh no... Kurama, Taro!?" she panicked as her hands moved to her stomach. She wasn't sure if all the stress and injuries could have caused her to lose her child...

Kurama closed his eyes in concentration and filtered out the noise that was Yusuke yelling.

"What's going on here?! How is she a demon?! What the hell was that explosion?! Why does it look like your gettin too friendly with my cousin?! Someone better start talkin or fists are gunna start flyin!"

"Shut up Suke! For one goddamn minute!" Kagome snarled, baring her fangs at him. Turning her attention back to Kurama, she sighed in relief when he smiled and nodded.

"Taro is fine, but we need to tend to your wounds or that will change. You cannot lose too much blood or he will be in more danger than he's already in now." Kurama explained as he pulled his communicator from his pocket. Flipping it open, he was greeted by Botan. "We have her but she'd injured, we need a portal to Genkai's please."

"Hey Botan!" Kagome grinned as she waved at the grim reaper from where she sat.

"How the hell do you know Botan?!" Yusuke yelled, thoroughly frustrated with the lack of information he possessed.

"That's what I'd like to know..." Botan muttered as the screen went blank and a portal appeared before them. Kurama lifted Kagome into his arms again and carried her through the portal. Everyone else followed silently and watched as Yukina led them into an empty room so she could begin healing the miko.

"So is everyone's memories messed up?" Kagome asked as she watched Yukina smile politely to her before lifted her shirt to assess her wounds.

"Indeed. How did you get yours back?"

"When the jewel was ripped from my side, it all came back." she muttered as Yusuke, Kuwabara, and Hiei filed into the room followed by Genkai. Kagome's gaze landed on Hiei and he glared at her for a moment before moving to sit on the window sill in the room. "Why does it seem that he dislikes me more than the first time we met?" Kagome laughed as she turned her attention back to Kurama.

He shrugged. "I am unsure... though it'd be nice for their memories to be returned." he murmured as Yusuke approached them with a glare of his own. The detective was at his breaking point.

"We were all fighting an enemy that was trying to destroy Reikai and take over the human and demon realms. After we defeated him, a pendent he was using to deflect my powers was destroyed and it somehow stripped everyone of their memories. Kurama somehow got his memories back, as have I, now we just have to get all of your memories back." Kagome explained before her cousin could blow a gasket.

He stood there surprised for a moment before shaking his head. "You've lost your mind Kag's."

She shrugged. "Oh that's not even the best part."

He crossed his arms over his chest and waited for her to continue.

"That grumpy ass hybrid over there." she said, smirking and nodding when Hiei turned to glare at her." Yea, you fireball. You're my mate and I'm pregnant with our child."

Kurama slapped his hand over his face with a groan as silence engulfed the room. Yukina even halted in her healing process to stare at Kagome in utter disbelief. Kagome laughed at the shock that swallowed Hiei so completely. He didn't even have a smart ass remark to throw at her.

"This isn't funny Kagome. We should get you checked out..." Yusuke muttered as he tried to regain his composure.

"You think I'm joking? Yukina, check. Tell them if I'm pregnant." Kagome said and the maiden nodded. Her hand shaking slightly, she turned her surprised gaze to Yusuke and nodded. Rolling her eyes, Kagome moved her hair to the side to reveal the mate mark on her neck. "And this would happen to be Hiei's mate mark. Don't believe me on this either? Smell me. Take a nice long whiff." she snickered.

"Kagome, take it down a notch. I don't think it was wise to tell them everything so directly..." Kurama muttered under his breath.

Kagome rolled her eyes and turned her gaze to Hiei. "Believe me yet?"

The hybrid glared at her accusingly. "What witchery have you dared to curse me with onna?"

The miko sighed heavily and pushed herself to her feet. With Yukina basically finished healing her, she was able to move on her own without much effort. Taking a step toward Hiei, she snickered. "You seem to dislike me even more than before. So tell me, are your desires still the same? Do you still find me attractive? Find my tail and ears arousing? Want to see the look of ecstasy in my odd colored eyes?" She questioned as she stepped closer to him.

Hiei stared at the demoness in surprise. How did she know that? Could she read his mind? Is that why her mental barrier was so powerful? Because she was mentally stronger than he was?

"Now you're confused of how I know all this huh?" she giggled. "Oh Hiei, my love." she murmured as she stopped just inches away from him. "Do you still not believe me?"

"Why would I ever lower myse-" his sharp words were cut short when Kagome pressed her lips against his softly. His eyes widened as his memories came flooding back. Within moments, Hiei was wrapping his arms around the miko and pulling her flush against him, kissing her deeper.

"AHHH! WHAT ARE YOU DOING TO MY COUSIN!? GET OFF HER HIEI!" Yusuke snapped as he leapt for the couple. Kurama easily restrained him as Hiei pulled away to allow the miko to breath.

"Would you please try to unleash their memories? Before Yusuke decides to tear you to pieces?" Kurama asked urgently as he somewhat struggled to hold the detective down.

Hiei rolled his eyes and awakened his jagan. Delving into Yusuke's mind. he was easily able to unlock his memories before he moved on to the others in the room.

Yusuke stopped struggling against the avatar and groaned. "Kurama, you're heavy." he whined. The avatar snorted and let him up before returning to his spot on the ground comfortably. Kagome kneeled beside her cousin and grinned toward him. He in turn rolled his eyes and ruffled her hair as Hiei finished helping everyone regain their memories. "So what exactly happened before we so bravely rescued you?"

Kagome scoffed at his sarcasm. "Monoki was torturing me into telling him where the Shikon was but with my memory lost, I didn't even know what he was talking about. By some miracle on his part, he accidentally pushed the jewel from my side when he ran me through with his katana. I tried fighting him off to keep the jewel safe but he was just too strong. I had no choice but to shatter the jewel again in order to keep him from getting his filthy hands on it."

Kurama sighed. "History repeats itself…"

"No kidding." Kagome grumbled as she glared across the room. "Believe me if there was another way, I wouldn't have broken it again."

"What I wanna know is how we lost our memories in the first place." Kuwabara spoke up.

Kagome sighed as she slumped back against the wall behind her. "This is just a guess but I think when Kuragari broke the pendant, there must have been some type of ability that we weren't aware of. It seemed to lock up everyone's memories of the entire event… hell I couldn't even remember my travels to the feudal era. It's like I'd never went there in the first place."

"How did we get to our homes then?" Kuwabara asked curiously, recalling that his sister claimed she'd found him unconscious in the front yard.

"I think the jewel has a great influence on the situation." Kurama piped up when no one produced an answer.

"What do you mean?" Kagome murmured, focusing her gaze on the avatar.

"Think about it. Your demonic side was hidden from you and only revealed when the jewel was removed from your body. The jewel must have transported us to safety after the explosion. There's no other explanation."

"But why didn't I remember I was a demon either?" the miko muttered curiously.

"The jewel was protecting its guardian. Since it had no control over the effects from the pendant, it took it upon itself to hide your demon blood for your own safety." Hiei stated from his window sill.

Kagome shrugged as her hand rested on her stomach and gently traced circles along her skin. Everyone's attention was brought to the miko and were immediately reminded of her condition. Hiei glanced toward Kurama and was relieved to see the avatar ushering everyone out of the room. Nodding his thanks to his friend, the hybrid stood and moved to sit beside his mate.

"…Taro?" he asked quietly.

A smile spread across her face as she turned to him and nodded. "Taro… your son." She murmured as she took his hand and placed it on her flat stomach. "He helped us save our future."

The hybrid nodded but before their moment of happiness could continue, Yusuke peeked into the room. "Sorry guys but Koenma wants to see us immediately."

Kagome smiled and nodded as she pushed herself to her feet and took Hiei's hand in hers once he stood. Leaning up to kiss him softly, she pulled him toward the living room where Botan awaited with a portal. Entering through behind her cousin, Kagome focused her attention onto the junior ruler of the spirit realm after Hiei returned his memories to him as well.

"As you are already aware; the Shikon No Tama has been shattered again. According to our monitors, the shards have spread throughout Makai as well as the human realm. This brings me to your new assignment." The demi god announced.

Kagome felt dread consume her as she shook her head, hoping she wouldn't hear what she knew was going to leave Koenma's mouth.

"Your new mission is to recollect the shards and fuse the jewel back to its original form. There are already rumors spreading of Monoki beginning to search and collect the shards so you will need to work quickly."

Kagome groaned loudly as she dropped her head into her hands. "Not again…"
