Pikachu was currently curled up on a metal bench across the convention hall, staring glumly after his trainer.

What had started off as a new and cool adventure for Ash and friends had turned out to be a complete let down for Pikachu. His sad brown eyes followed Ash's excited movements, watching him flit around a small enclosure that contained a single Pikachu.

Another Pikachu.

You see, as Ash, Misty, and Brock were on their way home to visit Pallet Town, they had noticed a large convention being set up inside a massive community building. It turned out that it was an annual thing for the town, where they would take in pokemon that were given up by their trainers and produce them for the public to look at and even take them as their own. It was a great way to give attention to these lonely pokemon, and to give them an opportunity to find a new home. The group thought it was a wonderful idea to stop in and have a look, and even maybe find another pokemon to have.

But Pikachu's problem was with Ash. He had been mooning over this Pikachu that was up for grabs, asking the worker there all different things about it. Questions such as what its move set was, how old it was, what was its personality, and how much it would be to take it with him. It had broke Pikachu's heart when Ash had said that, forcing him to jump down from his shoulder and scuttle across the convention room into his own space. Pikachu flattened his ears as he milled over his thoughts, looking down at his paws sadly as Ash laughed when the Pikachu sprang up from the box and clung to his arm.

Am I being replaced?

Pikachu had lost a battle with a traveling trainer the other day. It was a cocky young boy, with a powerhouse Quilava to boot. Ash had been pretty intimidated by this other trainer, and had gladly accepted his challenge. He had put his trust into Pikachu to win the battle for him...but the Quilava was just too strong. Its flamethrower left a nasty burn, and Pikachu was taken out quickly after that. Ash had taken care of him as usual, but Pikachu couldn't help but feel he was disappointed in him for losing.

Is that why he wants to get rid of me?

Looking up again, Pikachu's eyes widened when he saw Ash holding the other Pikachu in his arms and shaking hands with the worker. He flattened his ears more, feeling his heart throb painfully in hurt and confusion. Having seen enough, Pikachu cringed away and hopped down from the bench, sprinting across the convention hall and out the open front doors.

He took off down the dirt paved path, scampering across the road and towards the forest tree line on the other side. Hopping through some bushes, Pikachu found a hollowed out tree stump a little ways into the forest, crawling inside and curling up.

His hurt was slowly being replaced by fury, feeling his cheeks spark angrily. How could he?! How could his best friend, the one person he cared about and spent his entire journey with him do this? After all their laughs, hardships, close calls, and good times together, he was going to replace him with another Pikachu?!

Pikachu dug his paws into the grassy earth below, cheeks crackling as frustrated tears prickled in his eyes. He was feeling real hurt again.

Deciding he was going to stay in this spot until someone came looking for him, he curled in on himself more, flatting his ears to his head sorrowfully. He dozed off and on as the afternoon drug by, unable to fall asleep with his troubled thoughts.

It wasn't long before Pikachu heard voices calling his name. He perked his ears slightly, recognizing the voices of Misty, Brock and Ash. They were all looking for him.

Pikachu placed a paw outside, instinctively wanting to follow the voice of his trainer, but pulled back. He really didn't want to see him with his new Pikachu. He could wait.

Minutes flew by, and the voices were growing louder. Pikachu heard the bushes a ways away shudder and split, and watched as Ash stepped though, his face twisted with worry.

"Pikachuuuu? Pikachu!" Ash called, cupping his hands to project his voice. His head twisted side to side, looking and listening for any sound of him. Pikachu noticed the other Pikachu wasn't with him, surprisingly. Nonetheless, Pikachu felt uneasy, watching with wide eyes up at his troubled trainer.

"Pikachu?!" Ash called again, voice raising slightly, "Pikachu, please! Where are you?!" he called. His voice was sounding more frantic, and he stepped forward quickly, "Pikachu can you hear me?! Piikaachhu!"

Pikachu was starting to feel bad for worrying his trainer so. He still cared about him? Pikachu poked his nose forward, taking a deep breath, "Pika-pi."

Ash's head snapped to the side, eyes wide. He quickly followed the sound of the voice, running forward, "Pikachu?" he yelped hopefully.

Pikachu shuffled his paws uneasily, "Piikaaa.."

Ash looked downwards, hearing the sound coming from...an old tree stump? He knelt down on the ground, finally noticing the hole and recognizing with great relief Pikachu cowering inside.

"Pikachu." He gasped in relief, "Thank goodness, don't scare me like that again! You had me worried sick you know!" He smiled, but it quickly faded as he watched Pikachu's sorrowful expression, being replaced with concern again, "Hey buddy, what's the matter? Why are you hiding in there?" Ash's hand outstretched, reaching inside the hole towards his Pikachu.

Pikachu's eyes widened, scooting backwards towards the back of the stump, his tail swinging out and smacking Ash's hand away, "Pi-kaa!" he mewled warningly.

Ash recoiled in shock, his eyes flashing with hurt, "Pikachu?..." he whispered, "W-What's the matter?"

"Pikachu! Chu-pi pi!" Pikachu snapped, curling towards himself.

"Pikachu, I don't understand. Why are you angry with me? Did I...do something wrong?" he asked sadly.

"Pikachu." Pikachu called, eyes cringing in hurt while he pointed a paw towards himself, "Pikachu. Pikachu, Pikachu." he then pointed outside the hole, outwards towards the building.

Ash shook his head, the cogs ticking in his mind as he tried to piece together his thoughts. It suddenly clicked for him, remembering how Pikachu sprang away from him after he started asking about that other Pikachu. Understanding flashed across his face, before looking down into the hole, "Pikachu, please come out." he called longingly, "Please."

Pikachu hesitated for a moment, staying back cautiously before finally giving in and crawling out of the hole slowly. Ash picked him up and hugged him softly, cradling the Pikachu to his chest. Pikachu didn't object, eyes watering in sorrow as his paws gripped his blue vest.

"That's better." Ash sighed, looking down at Pikachu with a smile, "Pikachu, you don't think I was trying to replace you do you?"

"Chuu..." Pikachu crooned sadly.

Ash shook his head fiercely, "No way is that true! I only got the Pikachu because Professor Oak talked about wanting one for his studies! I got it from the guy, and I just got done transporting it to his lab before I noticed you had run off. I was so worried." he hugged him tighter, "But the point is, Pikachu, I would never ever replace you. You're my very best friend, my first pokemon, and my brother. Never in a million years could any other pokemon replace the special place you have my heart." He loosened his hug, looking down at Pikachu tenderly, "Ever."

Pikachu felt a swell of joy and love for his trainer, feeling completely ashamed for ever doubting him. His hurt vanished away, and Pikachu looked upwards with wide sparkling brown eyes at his trainer. Pikachu sprang upwards, hugging Ash tightly with his paws over his shoulders and nuzzling his cheek against Ash's, "Pikka-Piii!" he cooed happily.

"That tickles!" Ash giggled, his hand coming up to scratch Pikachu's head and hug him back softly, laughter bubbling from his throat.

Pikachu sprang up onto Ash's shoulder, his cheek still pressed to his, "Chaaa!"

Ash chuckled, stroking Pikachu's head again, "Always remember that Pikachu. You will always be number 1 in my book!" he smiled as Pikachu's cheeks sparked happily, "Whaddaya say we go catch up with the others, huh Pikachu?"

"Pika!" Pikachu confirmed.

Together the two took off towards the tree line, headed back to their friends. Pikachu learned a valuable lesson that day, and realized that he should never doubt his best friends loyalty. He would always stick by Pikachu's side, and Pikachu would always do the same for him.
