Chapter 12 : We're friends, right? (Part 2)
The sun is up, and Syaoran is getting ready to go to work. Polishing his shoes, putting papers on his case, fixing his tie. He always do that on his own, even if Meiling is with him. She tried helping him but he refused. "We're not even married, yet!" he told her.
"You're such a bad guy." says Meiling. "...That's why I like you." She went to the dining area to prepare their breakfast. But just as he finished fixing his tie, he went outside his room and stepped in front of the door of the apartment. "Aren't you gonna ea your breakfast? You'll be working the whole day, and you'll lose focus if you're hungry." she continues.
Syaoran refused. "I don't want to eat the breakfast you prepared. Who knows, you put something there. I'll just eat outside."
Meiling was getting furious with Syaoran. "Don't be so cold to me. I've woke up early in the morning just to prepare these!" she shouted.
But Syaoran gave her a cold stare. "It's precautionary measures, darling. That's how it is." He is about to go outside when Meiling told him that he called his grandmother, Meihua. "I told your grandmother that you'll be moving apartments. She said she will do everything so that you won't find an apartment to move in."
Syaoran smirked. "How nice of her. I wish her luck, though." He went outside to go to work. Meiling, on the other hand, felt lonely inside. It's like she about to give up with the way Syaoran treats her.
It was 6:30 in the morning, Syaoran went to the store where Sakura is working. There he meets her by surprise. "Sakura? " he said. "But I thought your shift starts in the afternoon?"
Sakura replied. "We change shifts each month. Anyways, My shift now starts at Seven."
"I see, you're too early!" says Syaoran. "So, I guess I have to be early to have my breakfast here."
- "Don't you have you breakfast at your house?"
"I live alone, and I only have a chance to cook at night. So, I take my breakfast in any convenience stores that I see. Anyways, I'll be moving soon so I guess i won't be able to practice my cooking skills."
- "Ah, okay. Anyways, the cashier just went outside so I don't have a choice but to take your order. What do you want."
Syaoran get the food that he wants to eat at the chiller. "Oh, there! I want that grilled salmon with miso soup. I also want brewed coffee, but don't put too much sugar on it."
- "Okay, then. I'll heat it for you." Sakura then puts the food on the microwave.
Syaoran went back to the chiller and grabbed another packed food. "I also wanna take out this Omelette Rice. I'll give this one to my boss."
- "Sure. Just put it there and I'll heat that after this." Sakura prepared his coffee, however, Syaoran told her another thing that he wants.
"And of course, what I really want ... is you."
She glared back at him. "... What?" she told him.
She felt a sudden chill, it was like the feeling of soft breeze dampening her skin. Both of them are looking at each other's eyes. It was like time stopped when she heard what Syaoran had said.
But that feeling was like a shattering glass because her co-worker entered the store. "Sakura, I'm so sorry, I almost missed the delivery truck who gave us the wrong stuff. They're here now - Sakura?" Sakura did not respond. "Sakura...Sakura!"
Suddenly, Sakura heard the buzzing sound of the microwave oven. "Oh, no! Your food's done!" She tried to get the food from the microwave oven. But she was so lost she forgot to put her pot holders on that's why she got slightly burned by it. Syaoran tried to help. "Sakura, are you okay? lemme just get it."
Sakura refused. "No...I can do it, I'm fine. I'll just get my pot holders."
Sakura went inside, she left Syaoran standing in front of the cashier's area. Her co-worker just loked at Syaoran and asked him - "What's happening to her?"
Sakura and Syaoran were sitting on the table that was set up outside the convenience store. "Ah! Isn't it nice having your breakfast outside?" He told her. "And then, you're sipping a hot cup of coffee on this foggy morning!"
Sakura was just sitting in front of him while listening to his rants, when she cuts him off. "Do you have any family members whom you live with?"
Syaoran looked at her. "Huh?"
- "I mean your mother and father. Someone who will listen to your rants. Someone who will cook, mend your clothes, and even be with you for breakfast.
Syaoran sighed. "Um... They're in China right now."
- "You live alone?"
"Well, I decided to live on my own. I'm a grown up now and I don't want to rely on my parents, especially with financial aspects. It's not a usual way of living in our country because, as you may know, we used to have an extended family."
- "Do they pay you a visit?"
"Not yet, actually. My mom is a Director of one of the biggest Hospitals in Beijing. My father travels a lot for business trips. And the only chance for me to talk to them is when they call me to check what's going on with my life. But then, again, they are busy people. I rarely receive phone calls from them..."
"Ahhh..." Sakura reacted. She is about to ask more questions about him and his family "So, do you have relatives?"
"Huh? What do you think of me, I raised myself alone since birth?"
- "I mean, you've always been alone, right? Don't you want to have any relatives who will live with you?"
Syaoran thought about Meiling, and as much as possible, he doesn't want to bring her up with their conversation. So he thought a good excuse. "About that... Hmmm..."
- "...What?"
"You know, we are a huge clan in China. All of my relatives are busy with their own businesses, especially my family. So I guess, they don't have that opportunity to live with me. Anyways, I've been alone when I was in high school so I'm okay with this set up."
- "But I assume your clan is definitely rich."
"Filthy rich, actually."
- "But why are you working as a secretary, then?"
"Self pride, I guess..."
- "Self pride?"
"Yeah... I mean, I find it inappropriate if I depend on my family just to earn a living. You know? Earning something with your own hard work? That is something that you should be proud of. You might compare me to the children from rich families, but I tell you, I am NOT a happy go lucky guy. Besides, I'm okay working with Tomoyo because she's my friend."
- "But you have a lot of companies. I think It's okay if you work with one of your relative's businesses."
"I know. But I thought it will make my life more complicated."
- "Why complicated?'
"I think you just don't understand my belief. If my relatives hire me just because of the fact that I'm their relative, then what about those people who are more capable of the position that they gave me? Isn't it unfair for them? Unlike other people, I hate nepotism. I know how it feels if that happens to me?"
- "Does it really matter if you have the knowledge? Plus, you were hired by your friend, so what's the difference?"
Syaoran is getting annoyed with her questions. "Jeez! You have a lot of questions!" he said while scratching his head.
- "Because I want to know you more! I want to learn if you're still the Syaoran that I knew before."
Syaoran sighed. "Okay, then... I give up with this conversation." But then, he asked Sakura. "Anyways, it's my turn now...Can I ask you one question? It's actually a problem and I hope you could help me."
- "Is that personal?" She asked.
"Sort of..."
- "Am I involved with it?"
Syaoran got irritated. "Hey! Stop asking questions and listen to me, will you"
- "Okay, I'm listening!"
Syaoran stated his concern. "Well, I just head a story of this guy who loves a woman. But then, he was committed to a fixed marriage that was set up by their relatives, so he will be marrying someone whom he doesn't like. He tried to escape and hid by going back to the place where the woman he loves live. Suddenly, that woman whom he should marry followed him. If he breaks his commitment with this other woman, that his family will be out of his clan for good. He loves that woman, but he also loves his family. In short, he's in between the woman he loves, and the woman that he has to marry because of a commitment. So... if you're that man... Will you follow your heart, or will you follow what your relatives want?" He took a deep breath. 'I'm sorry, I'm not good at storytelling."
Sakura got curious and stared at him for a while. "Wait... don't tell me... was it you in that story?"
"EH?!" Syaoran shouted. "H...HELL NO! It wasn't me! It's just that one of my friends told me that story, and then I could not give him an advice!"
- "You sure about that?"
"I'm not lying to you! "
- "Hmmmm... " Sakura thoughts. "Anyways, why is he hiding?"
"What? I don't know. Maybe, he doesn't want his family to get involved with it."
- Sakura thinks deeply. "That's strange...I don't know ... I'm not sure if I could give this as an advice. My family has been so understanding with my needs. Maybe because they treat me as a family baby since I'm the youngest and I'm the only woman in the house since my mother passed away. Dad would always ask me if I have a boyfriend so that I could settle down and get married, and I always tell him no. He also makes fun of me by encouraging me to introduce him to our family if I have one. I know he know that I'm single, and he's just joking. But he always tells he doesn't care who my boyfriend is. What matters most is that he will love me just the way father loved my mother. It's quite a very long explanation, but if I'm in that situation, I'll follow my heart and marry the one I love. I won't hide, I will face the problem I have with my family and relatives together with that person I love. It might be difficult at first, but I'm sure they will understand my decision as time pass by. They might hate me at first, but I don't think they will reject me because as the saying goes, blood is thicker than water."
"That makes sense..." Syaoran told her.
- "But I don't see any reason why he should hide and run away with it. I felt that guy is a chicken."
Syaoran just nodded. "Yeah... He's such a coward..." He disappointingly said.
- Sakura looked at her watch. "It's a quarter to seven! I have to get ready. Anyways, I guess you'll be here for breakfast for as long as I'm on this shift."
"I guess so... But I prefer seeing you everyday." He said.
- "Stop joking me."
"No, I'm not! I really want to see you everyday. Anyways, I'll go now. I don't want to be late, or my boss will kill me. See you soon!" He brought the paper bag together with him and walks away. Sakura, on the other hand, gets ready for her shift. But before she enter the stoore, she looked back at Syaoran. He did the same, and they waived at each other.
Days passed by. It was a very bright Saturday morning and the Kinimoto family is getting ready for a visitor.
"Hey, dad!" Sakura said. "The person who will rent one of our rooms... what time he will come?'
Fujitaka answered. "Not sure, but I texted him and he said he's on his way."
"And why are you asking?" says Touya. "You sound pretty excited. Do you expect HIM as your boyfriend, Miss Single Forever?"
Sakura shouts at her brother "No! I expect him to kick your butt!"
Fujitaka tried to stop them. "Okay, children, stop it..." Suddenly, the door bell rang. "Oh, I guess that's him." He asked Sakura to open the door since she's the closest to it. "Sakura, open the door for him."
"Yes, dad." she complied. The held the door knob and opened the door slowly. But to her surprise, she saw a face that is very familiar.
"Good morning, Sakura!"
She just gazed at the man in front of him."...S...Syaoran?! But why..."
"I just told you before, I want to see you more often."
Sakura just stood before him. As she didn't even expect that Syaoran will move to their place.
