Here's the Storyy…!
*-Returning the Lost 2-*
I was disorientated as I pried my eyes open; becoming aware of my surroundings. The dense forest was thinning out, the stars peeking out from behind the canopy of trees. I must have been asleep for a few minutes, because the unfocused sounds of a television reached my oversensitive ears. I yawned and tried to move my arm, but a burning pain from my left arm made me wince.
"Don't move, you're bleeding very badly." A soft voice said from above me, the sound vibrating the chest beneath my ear. Crippling sweetness filled my nose, threatening my gag reflexes. I gazed upwards and locked gazes with golden hues. For a minute – just a minute – I forgot who it was and where I was heading, but then the previous happenings replayed through my mind and I relaxed my tense shoulders.
"Where are we?" My voice cracked and I closed my eyes to reign in my nausea.
"We're almost by your house's front door." Edward murmured.
My eyes snapped open – my nausea long forgotten – and tried to focus on my surroundings. The darkness blocked out everything, except for a bright porch light highlighting a red house a few feet away.
I needed to be in there! I needed to see them – him! I needed to feel his arms around me, telling me everything was okay.
I struggled in Edward's arms, trying to get to my feet and sprint to the familiar door.
"Hold still. You shouldn't move." Edward commanded, holding me tightly.
"You'll see them in a moment, but you need to keep still until Carlisle arrives." His soft words sent a wave of calm through my body, and I stopped my struggling.
Inside the house the sounds stopped and heavy footsteps reached the front door at the same time that Edward stopped in front of it. The door opened to reveal a tall man with short black hair, small brown eyes, a bit of a scruffy beard and a guarded look on his face. Had I been clean and standing next to him, we would have passed as siblings, but I wasn't so sure now.
"Edward, Nessie isn't here…" My brother trailed off, finally noticing me in Edward's arms. His nostrils flared as he took in my scent with his wolfy-nose, and a deep frown settled on his face – eyes narrowed and a low growl rang from his chest.
"What are you doing with a leech? And why are you here in LaPush with it?" Jacob demanded, voice low and threatening.
A growl came from inside the house, along with the sound of another pair of heavy footsteps. Jacob raised his hand to whoever was making their way towards us, and the footsteps faltered.
"Jacob, may we come in? Carlisle is on his way here with Nero – and most probably a few more of the pack." Edward asked, his voice calm and gentle.
Jacob's eyes narrowed to tiny slits, and the growling erupted inside the house again. Without taking his eyes off us, Jacob called to the growling person, "Shut it, Paul. This is my house and you don't go growling at people unless I say they aren't welcome."
I heard a scoff and the footsteps faded further into the house. Jacob met Edward's gaze with heated, aged brown eyes – older than they were when I last saw them. "Why do you wanna bring that thing in here? If you're helping stray vamps now, please keep them out of LaPush."
Even though I knew my brother thought I was a vampire, his words still stung. I shifted in Edward's arms, wincing when I moved my arm, and tried to escape from Edward's grip, but it just tightened. I saw Jacob tense as I moved, and rolled my eyes as Edward sighed like a parent would at a misbehaving child.
I gave up my struggle – again – and met my brother's gaze, speaking before Edward had the chance to open his mouth. "Hey, Jakey."
A silence followed after the words left my mouth and Jacob stood in the doorway, his tanned face paling with each passing second. His eyes filled with hope, relief and joy. His lips quivered as he continued to stare at me, eyes roaming over my barely clothed skin, stopping on my bleeding arm. Anger and disbelief filled his face, and he opened and closed his mouth a few times. "So-Soph?" His voice was strained and whispered.
I nodded and realized I had started crying. Great, I promised myself I wouldn't cry! Oh what the hell, I've been through shit so I think I deserve some tears!
Jacob stared at me for another minute, before he reached towards me and pried me out of Edward's arms – much to his complaints. I winced as Jacob hugged me to his warm chest, his forehead pressed against the top of my head as wetness dripped onto my dirty hair. Was Jake crying?
"You're home." He choked out, tightening his grip around me. I nodded as bile rose in my throat, wincing at the pain rising in my arm.
Edward noticed my wincing and laid a gentle hand on Jake's shoulder, "Jacob, we need to get her inside, she's freezing." I only noticed the shivering after the words left Edward's mouth. I felt Jacob nod and he pressed a kiss to my head, stepping into the warmth of the house. Edward stayed outside; probably waiting for Carlisle to arrive.
Jacob walked towards the lounge where I saw Paul and my sister, Rachel, sitting together on a single-couch – Rachel sitting on Paul's lap with his arms wrapped around her securely. Both of them looked up when Jacob rushed into the lounge, barking orders left and right. "Rach, get some warm clothes. Paul fetch me a couple of blankets."
Paul growled at Jacob, glaring at me as Jacob sat down on the couch, holding me in his lap. "Jacob, why do you have a leech in your arms? You're putting Rachel in danger!" Paul was standing, Rachel tucked away safely behind him.
Jake growled at Paul, his eyes narrowed so much that they almost seemed closed. "She's not a leech, Paul," Jacob glanced around Paul at Rachel, meeting her scared, questioning gaze, "It's Sophy."
Paul's eyes grew large as he assessed me again, realization dawning on him like a plague of flies. Rachel cried out and darted around Paul, pulling me away from Jacob's warmth and into her arms. Our tears mingled together as she hugged me, muttering incomprehensible things through the tears. I cried out as the pressure of her hug reached my injured arm, sending pulsing pain through my body.
Jake gently tugged me away from my sobbing sister, "Careful Rach, she's hurt."
There was a red stain on Rachel's white shirt, but she didn't seem to notice as she wiped away her tears and took raggedy breaths. "Sorry, Soph. I-I just…I just…" She trailed off as another round of sobs racked through her body. Paul ushered her into his embrace and he gave me a sad smile over Rachel's head.
I heard footsteps outside the house and guessed that Carlisle must have arrived. As I waited for him and Edward to enter the house, I noticed someone missing from the house. I looked up at Jacob's concerned face and cleared my throat before I spoke, "Jake, where's Daddy?"
Jake sighed and his eyes looked tired, way too old to be the eyes I knew. "After you disappeared, Sue and Charlie insisted he move in with them to help him cope with your absence. He could barely sit in the lounge without crying about you. He was so worried; we all were, especially when we found your scent with that of a vampire's."
I nodded and leaned my head against his chest as Edward and Dr. Cullen walked into the lounge. Paul and Rachel had disappeared, probably to follow Jake's orders or for Rachel to calm down.
Dr. Cullen moved to sit on the table in front of the couch Jacob and I were resting on – and I was surprised when the table didn't break. Carlisle gave me a small smile as Jacob gently shifted me to face Dr. Cullen. "Good to see you again, Sophy. I can't tell you what a relief it is to have you home safe and sound."
I nodded and grimaced as he took my injured arm in his cold hands. He smiled apologetically at me and began cleaning the wounds. I bit my lip at the sting of the antiseptic and focused on anything else in the room; my eyes darting to everything. It was exactly the same as I remembered it.
"Jacob," Edward called. Both my brother and I turned to look at him, "Some of the Pack are outside. They want to know what's going on."
Jacob sighed and nodded, "I'll tell them what's going on after Carlisle has helped Soph, and after you fill me in on how you found her this time of the night."
Edward nodded and began filling Jacob in on what happened in the woods. He told Jacob how he heard Nero's, the silver wolf, thoughts while he was on his way home from checking on someone. I wasn't sure who the 'someone' was, because Edward left the person's name out and just gave Jake a meaningful glance. Jake nodded and continued to listen as Edward told the rest of the story.
When Edward reached the part where Nero had attacked me and had been the one to hurt me, Jake nearly lost control – he was shaking very badly. Jacob's arms tightened around me slightly as he forced his breathing back to normal.
It took Edward a few minutes to relay the story, but in that time Dr. Cullen had cleaned and bandaged my wound. He told me that I didn't need stitches since Nero hadn't been able to bite very deeply. Jake and I thanked Carlisle and watched as he packed his things away.
Edward and Carlisle seated themselves across from us whilst Jake placed me down on the couch and stood to fill the pack in. A few moments later, he returned wearing a scowl muttering about misbehaving pups.
Jacob took his seat next to me again and looked at me with softened eyes. "I only told them that you were back and not to tell the others yet. They were reluctant, but promised and left."
I nodded and took a deep breath. I was safe, home, free.
I saw Edward nod from the corner of my eye and I smiled a bit. Rachel entered the room with a bundle of clothes in her arms, Paul trailing behind her like a little lost puppy. I smiled more at the thought, and Edward chuckled.
"I ran some bath water for you and have clean clothes for you, Soph. You wanna relax in some nice, warm water?" Rachel's voice was as soft as her eyes. She tucked the clothes under her arms and held her hand out for me.
Jacob went to protest but Rachel snapped at him. "She needs to relax, Jacob. So, let her do that, okay?"
Jake sighed and nodded. I took Rachel's outstretched hand and stood up slowly. She smiled at me softly and led me to the bathroom. There was steam rising from the warm, bubbly water and I breathed in deeply; the scent of strawberry replaced the vampire scent I was used to.
"I'll just leave these here. Your favorite shampoo and conditioner are there by the bath, along with your usual body wash." She set the clothes down on the washing machine and turned to leave.
"Rach," I called out. She turned and looked at a spot above my shoulder. "Are you okay?"
She let out a humorless laugh and locked gazes with me. Her eyes brimmed with tears and a few stray ones fell. "Am I okay? I should be asking you that. You've been gone for five months, and it's just, you look so-so – not like you! I'm sorry, I should be more calm, but I'm just so relieved that you're back and I don't know what to do to help, o-or…" She trailed off and took a deep breath, wiping the fallen tears from her cheeks.
I walked over to her and hugged her carefully, "It's okay, I'm okay. You don't have to do anything. I'll be fine, you'll be fine – everything will be fine." I whispered to her.
Rachel nodded and pulled away, smiling a teary-eyed smile. "I'm really glad you're home. Dad will be so relieved and excited." She smiled once more before she walked out the door and closed it behind her. I locked it and began stripping the dirty, tattered, skimpy clothes. I glared and kicked the pile as if I could hurt those things all over again.
I slowly lowered myself into the steaming bubbles and leaned back. My muscles relaxed and unknotted themselves; everything turned numb. A stinging in my eyes made me realize that I was holding back tears – so, for the first time in a long time… I cried. I let them fall, I let everything out as the past few months' happenings came crashing down around me…
Flashback
I was walking home from Seth's house, taking my usual route through the forest. I smiled at the mention of my boyfriend and soul mate of one month. He was reluctant in letting me go home, but he had to go and visit his mom. I would have gone with him if I hadn't promise Lacy, Fallon and Aleera that we'd have a movie-day.
The sun was shining pretty warmly, which was weird since we lived in LaPush, Washington. But, who was I to complain. I jumped over a fallen tree log and my white sundress fluttered out behind me. It was so nice and quiet out here; I felt at home and at ease. The birds were chirping, the trees were swaying to their own songs, and the rich scent of pine, forest and musk bathed the surrounding area.
The musk was quite overpowering, extremely strong; which was extremely weird considering that I've walked these woods many times and have never smelled it before.
I stood still and listened intently to the sounds surrounding me. I ignored the rush of a river in the East, I listened past the flutter of a flock of birds, past the swaying of the trees and concentrated on the unknown sound in the distance. It was very faint, very low, but it sounded like panting and growling. I shrugged it off as one of the wolves from the packs running patrols, and continued my walk.
My senses were much more alert now, since the panting and growling came nearer and nearer; and the musk became stronger and stronger. I searched my surroundings and unfortunately walked straight into a low hanging tree branch. I winced as the thin branches scratched my face, I swatted them away and cautiously continued walking. The warmth from the sun disappeared and was replaced by dark clouds.
I sighed.
It never stayed sunny for long in LaPush.
The sound of snapping twigs had me twirling around fast, my eyes darting around wildly. I gasped as my gaze landed on a pair of glowing red eyes. Eyes the color of blood, the color of death. The musk overrode my senses and the eyes growled. The glowing orbs were about seven to eight feet high in the air, and the growl revealed rows of sharp, yellow teeth.
I gulped.
I heard more twigs snap around me and my fear level spiked. Something told me that these weren't from the packs… and they most likely weren't nice and welcoming either. Two more sets of eyes joined the large, towering thing and they growled, too.
Slowly, I slipped my flip-flops from my feet and built up the anxiety to run like a bat out of hell. The first pair of crimson eyes made a move forward, and I hightailed it out of there. I tripped a few times, but I shot up and ran – the sounds of the angry beasts behind me.
I was vaguely aware of a sense of déjà vu, but I couldn't concentrate on it at the moment. I had to concentrate on not falling and losing my life!
I was running, without knowing what was chasing me. Trees surrounded me and my ears picked up the sound of my bare feet hitting the muddy forest floor, my heavy, unsteady breathing and the sound of twelve pairs of paws and growling echoing in my ear lobes.
As I ran, dodging trees and stumbling over uprooted tree roots, I felt the fear in my gut climb up my throat and expanding to my aching, exhausted limbs, almost causing my exhaustion to win and for me to collapse, waiting to get mauled to death by the fierce animals tracking my sent and gaining on my trail. I tried to shift, but I couldn't get my emotions mixed enough, and there was no sun for me to use to harness the energy to make fire. I was screwed.
I pushed my legs faster than any human would ever be able to run, my heart almost pounding out of my rib cage. Warm drops of salty liquid slid down my cheeks, and only now did I realize I had been crying the entire time. The scene was perfectly planned as it started to rain; thunder and lightening sliced the haunting silence.
I started slipping on the wet and muddy ground, trying with all my might and the little energy I had left to not fall and lose my short, unlived and unfulfilled life to these creatures of the night. My foot got caught on a tree branch and I fell to the ground, hitting my head full force on the forest floor, smearing the right side of my face with mud.
My head throbbed and a metallic stench mixed with the scent of the forest and the rain. A coppery colored substance dripped from a wide gash on my right temple, seeping down my cheek and down on the ruined white dress.
My vision blurred and more tears streaked down my face, I cried out in pain as I tried to stand, but a deathly pain shot up my left leg and I fell back onto the cold, wet, muddy earth. I heard the thumping of the twelve pairs of foot falls reaching nearer and nearer, as I lay here helplessly waiting for my horrible death to take me away from this cruel world, silently hoping that it would come painless and quick.
The sound of angry snarls was the last I heard before a pair of teeth grazed my arm and I blacked out.
When I came to, I was in a small, dark room. It reeked of musk and vampire. My stomach churned at the scents, but I pushed it down. My head was throbbing slightly from where I had bashed it when I had fallen, and my ankle was feeling better. I groaned and clutched at my stomach, trying to keep my food from making a reappearance.
My chest was aching so badly, it was as though someone was tugging at my heart, trying to pull it out and away from the place I was in.
A door opened somewhere in the darkness and footsteps echoed in the small room. Bitter sweetness assaulted my nose and I gulped down the bile rising in my throat. Three tall, dark figures stopped in front of me and I heard more footsteps in the back of the room. My fear level spiked.
"Ah, so this is the lovely little thing that I've heard so much about." A accentuated velvet voice crooned in the darkness.
"She doesn't look like much, Aro. She reeks of those mutts." Another voice sneered. I growled at him, but it was short due to the substance heaving from my stomach.
"That is repulsive! How disgusting." The same voice hissed. I didn't like that guy.
"It seems that the girl does not like you, Caius." A new voice stated with a bored humor.
A funny, no, hilarious laugh bounced off the walls of the small room and I had to use all my self-control not to burst out laughing at the sound. "Yes, it seems so. Although, my sources say that she has a weak stomach when it comes to our kind."The vampire, Aro, said. He sounded so curios and enthralled.
Caius, I think, snorted. "Your sources could very much be false and unreliable. However, I would rather believe that than be insulted by a mere girl."
"She does not seem like a mere girl, Caius. She is wolf, but something more." The bored voice replied.
"Yes, Marcus, as our ally brought under our attention. Now, to test if he is telling the truth or spinning us a web of false silk." Aro murmured.
The sound of moving fabric replaced the silence and the middle shape bent down. Before I could react, a cold hand gripped mine and various images flashed before my eyes. Gruesome things, malicious thoughts, pleasant flavors… so many unknown things passed through my brain. The figure ripped his hand from mine and gasped.
"What is it, Aro? What did you see?" Caius questioned.
Aro, I was assuming, stood up to his full height again. "Nothing… I saw nothing. But I felt a fire burning beneath her skin, beneath her soul… and a connection to the past and the future. Much like the one I felt when I touched young Alice. Magnifico!"
"What are you proposing, Brother?" Caius inquired.
"She, this precious little girl, may be able to do what Alice Cullen can do, but in reverse as well!" Aro's reply was ecstatic.
I had had enough of them discussing me like I wasn't even there. "'This girl' is sitting right here, you freaks." My voice was hoarse and not as strong as I had hoped for.
"Freaks? No, my dear child. We are from a species, unlike you. So, think again on who you call a freak." Caius retorted with a scoff.
I rolled my eyes at him. He was most likely full of himself. There was always someone like him in a group of three. I growled at them and tried mixing my emotions, tried to remember a situation filled with more than one emotion. The times that Jacob had left, the anger, sadness and loneliness I felt.
I smirked at them (wasn't sure if they could see it or not) as the heat began spreading throughout my body. I could feel my bones shifting to take on my other form, realigning and reshaping. But before I could complete the change; something sharp and hard grazed my arm. Vicious growling filled my ears and hissing followed after.
The heat retracted and my bones took on their normal human shape. Rough hands pulled my arms up and above my head; clasping something metal around them. My eyes began drooping shut, my mind fighting unconsciousness – but I was fighting a loosing battle.
The last thing I heard before I blacked out was, "Tsk, tsk. Bad manners to try and hurt the ones with your life in their hands, precious girl." Then the graze began burning and my mind shut down.
"Precious Sophia," Aro coed, pacing before my shackled self. "You are testing our patience. Tell us what we want to know and we shall let you leave."
I stared at the crazy vampire through the dark and frowned at him. I couldn't make out how he looked since there wasn't any light in the room, but I had a sinking suspicion that he had big red hair and a white face – he was that funny sounding.
They had found out the second meeting with me that turning on the lights in the room was a bad idea, and now they had a dead – er ended vampire from that mistake. I also managed to burn Caius' hand from what I heard.
"I'm not telling you something I don't know. So take your questions and shove them up your sparkly as-."
"Language, my dear. A lady does not curse nor cuss." Marcus reprimanded in his usual bored voice. Out of the three vamps, I despised him the least. Aro was somewhere in the middle and Caius was the one I'd like to rip a part and burn to ashes. Fortunately, Caius stopped coming after I almost took his arm off.
"Sophia, if you wish to see your friends and family again, it would be wise to give us the information we seek." Aro tried again.
For the past fifteen meetings, they've bee trying to coax me into telling them about the Quileute wolves and how I obtained my abilities. The first topic I simply refused to share info about and the second one was a dead end. So far as what I could tell, they didn't know about Fallon, Aleera or Lacy, which was a huge relief.
I remained silent and just stared at the blackness surrounding me. The room seemed to be shrinking each day and the temperatures were slowly dropping. I shivered as the cold bit at my very exposed skin.
After the first time they drugged me with the Werewolf poison, I woke up with clothes that exposed a lot of skin. It was efficient enough considering the Werewolf (yes an actual Werewolf, the large, ugly tall things) had to scratch me to drug me.
"Wouldn't you like to see that wolf of yours? I believe he is sandy colored, correct? You two share a very pure bond, and it must be hurting you to be away from him."Aro taunted.
Seth.
My heart beat raced and the tugging in my chest pulled with such force it left me gasping in pain. Gosh, I missed him so much!
Aro's source apparently knew freakishly a lot about me, which left me pondering the hours as to who it could have been. So, far I didn't have any suspects.
I remained silent again, and closed my eyes from the looming darkness. Aro sighed and footsteps echoed in the room. "Until next time. I hope this will give you more time to think about my questions."
The door shut behind him and the sound of a lock clicking in place had me rolling my eyes. As if I could escape these solid iron chains!
A growling erupted from the other side of the door and my heart stuttered. I screwed my eyes shut and pressed my back into the plastered wall, my feet scuffing the hard, wood floor.
The screams came. As they always did.
I tried not to listen, but it was no use – the shrill sounds echoed in my ears and made me sick to my stomach.
Every time after a visit the screams began, along with the growling and snarling. I knew that it wasn't humans being torn to bits by the Werewolves. No – these were traitors that defied Aro, Caius and Marcus. I was foolish enough to ask once, and I was given a very detailed description of what they did.
My heart tugged again, whimpering, crying. I knew the pain it felt, for I felt it tenfold. When this began, and it always began, I would close my eyes and remember all the times Seth and I spent together. There weren't many recent ones, but they were the ones that helped the most. And made it worse.
I drifted off into unconsciousness with Seth's warm eyes and smile in my mind sight and the echoing of tortured screams as the background music.
Come on, come on, almost have it!
The small spark flickered out, leaving behind a tiny swirl of smoke. I sighed and slumped against the wall exhausted.
I've been practicing every moment since I thought of it. This was the furthest I've came in… uh, well I wasn't sure. I lost track of how long I've been here. I used to count it by the meetings I have with Aro and Marcus, but after forty-three meetings they stopped coming. Now, they only came every once in a while.
I kind of missed our little chats.
Kind of.
The thing I was practicing was to create fire without the rays of the sun or without the help of a nearby fire. So far I could only manage a little spark, but even that drained me and left me exhausted.
My stomach grumbled and I scowled. I looked over at the plate of food they brought me every… uh, I think it was every few hours. It consisted of dried out, tasteless rice and hard bread with a smudge of butter. I would receive water every few… hours, but other than that, nothing else.
I moved the plate closer and nibbled at the bread, forcing it down. They had taken my restraints and bolted the to the floor with a chain connecting the cuffs to the slot on the wooden ground. It allowed me a minimal space to move, but not nearly enough as I wanted.
I finished the small piece of bread and moved the rest away for later. I settled back in and concentrated on my hands. I focused on sending every bit of heat and energy I had to them. I pictured them moving, binding together to make a flame or a spark… anything.
I smiled to myself as a little spark flickered between my palms. It was faint but it was something. It was my little spark of hope… get it? Spark of hope, and it was a spark of fire?
Ugh, even my internal jokes were getting lame.
"Sophia." Aro sung out in his Italian accent.
"Arooo." I mocked, my accent as fake as decent looking food in this place.
Aro stopped pacing, "My patience is wearing thin, girl. Tell me what I ask for!" His glowing red eyes settled on me, thin and glaring.
I cocked my head to the side and pursed my lips. "What is it you asked me again? I seemed to have forgotten. Does it feel like these walls are closing in on you, too? At night, well I think it's at night, I hear them moving, creeping closer, and closer."
"Gah! I believe you have gone mad. Hopefully you'll be mad enough to tell me what I want some day. I'll just have to wait."
Aro was cracking, I knew it. But so was I. Some day? How long would I need to act crazy before I actually went crazy? How long until it really started to feel as though the walls were creeping closer? Would I last that long?
Aro strode out of the room and slammed the door shut behind him. I smiled faintly and sat back, bringing my hands together I concentrated and a small flame burst to life. It was weak, cold, not warm enough yet or strong enough yet.
But soon, very soon, it would be strong enough to take down this entire place.
His smiling eyes and warm grin flashed in y mind and my heart whimpered loudly… or was that me? I wasn't sure anymore. I realized that if I didn't think his name, it hurt less.
With his face in my mind I stared at the flame, feeding it more and more, making it powerful enough. "Soon, I'll be home soon. I promise."
The screaming started again…
I rolled my eyes as the door slammed shut behind Aro and Marcus. My heartbeat began racing.
It was now or never.
I concentrated on my hands and they burst into blue and red flames, licking the air and warming my cold body. I pressed them against the shackles binding me and watched as the metal glowed bright red with the heat. One by one, they fell from my wrists to the wooden floor with a soft clink.
I sprung up from the ground and almost groaned as the tension evaporated from my stiff limbs and my aching back. When I had the chains on I was able to stand, but I had to bend to keep from dislocating my arms. I silently and quickly rushed towards the door; hands blazing.
The door was made of solid wood, a pro for me and a con for the suckers on the other side. (Hehe, I made a pun!)I pressed my blue and red hands on the door and watched as the flames licked across the wood, dancing and swirling until the entire thing went up in flames. I pulled back and stared at the hole spreading out in the wood and I smiled to myself.
Freedom, baby!
Once the hole was big enough for me to pass through, I pulled the heat from the flames and quickly passed through before I stoked them with more heat. The flames raced up the wall and the ceiling, crackling and exclaiming with fierce joy.
I ran down the long corridor, following the repulsive stench of vampire and came to a stop at a large oak door. Seriously? They were keeping me in a place basically made out of wood? Dumbos!
I pushed the doors open and stepped inside the massive lounge-like room. There was one vamp sitting on the couch who jumped up when I entered. His large red eyes were wide when they took me in. The lights eliminated his shining skin and powered my ability. The vampire's shoulder length brown hair billowed from the heat extending from my hands.
He looked so familiar. Why did he…
I could feel my eyes grow large as recognition hit me like a freight train. He was the first vampire I had come across, the one who had been feeding off the girl my age. He must have started this!
I glared at him and the flames dripped from my hands and pooled on the ground, swaying and dancing around until there was a blue and red path of liquid flames.
"You! You started this!" I seethed at him, my voice dry and hoarse from lack of water.
The vampire smirked and took a step forward, loosening the cloak around his shoulders. It fluttered to the ground and lay there in a black heap. "Indeed I did, sugah. I know how to hold a grudge against someone who disturbs my feeding." His Southern drawl was loud above the roaring of the flames behind me.
"I'm gonna enjoy ending your undead life." I gritted out before I stretched my arms and threw a ball of red and blue towards him. He didn't even have time to react. One minute he was standing there smirking, the next he looked like a deer caught in the headlights of a Chevy truck. He went up in screams, flailing arms and smoke, before he dropped to the ground – silent.
Pain filled howling and whimpers reached my ears, echoing from where I had come in from. The Werewolves.
I stalked forward and grabbed the cloak off the ground. It stank of the heaping pile of ash, but I shook it off and fastened it around my neck. I'd need something to hide myself from the remaining vamps and the humans once I escaped from this place.
I turned and ran down a corridor that had wind and fresh air billowing from it, ignoring the other stinking paths and the voices that came from them. Fire raced and twirled around me, on the walls, the ceiling, the floors. The place was going up in flames, and instead of feeling terrible and bad, I felt happy and relieved.
The screeching and screaming started just as I reached the door to my freedom, and I winced and ducked my head to try and block the sounds out. I wretched the door open and almost jumped out into the cool, early morning air. I ran, and ran, and ran. Until I couldn't hear, see or smell the screams, house or vampires anymore.
I sprinted down the cement path and down the steep downhill. I paused to catch my breath once I reached the turnoff into a town. My lungs burned, but I breathed in deeply, filling them until they burned from new pain. I ran my hands through my hair, noticing that the flames had receded but still burned beneath the surface of my skin. Waiting to help when I needed it.
I laughed; a dry, humorless laugh and smiled up at the dim sun. The soft rays caressed my skin with whispered touches. "Thank you. Thank you so much."I now firmly believed that there truly was a God out there; for he helped me escape, he gave me hope and strength when I had none.
I smiled once more and pulled the cloak closer to my body, hiding the skimpy clothing from view, as I began an evenly paced walk towards the town and civilization.
After a few minutes, houses came into view. Unfamiliar houses. Gosh, I really hoped that I wasn't in some foreign country or nation.
I saw an elderly lady exit a yellow painted house and I quickly dashed towards her. "Ma'am, ma'am. Sorry to disturb you, but could you maybe tell me where I am? What city or town?"
The graying lady looked up and her eyes went wide as she took in my… uh disheveled state. "Oh my! Dearie, are you alright? What happened to you?"
I gave a sigh of relief when she spoke English with no accent, or anything unusual. I nodded. "I'm fine, ma'am. Can you please tell me where I am? I'd really like to get home."
The lady looked like she wanted to say more, but after taking one more glance at my state, sighed and shook her head. "You're in the outskirts of Seattle, dear. Do you need any help getting home?"
Seattle? Wow, I've been in Seattle this entire time?! "No thank you, ma'am. Could you maybe point me in the direction of Forks? I have a, uh car parked around the corner and I kind of lost direction." I lied, pointing behind me.
She looked skeptical, but sighed again and gave me the directions. I thanked her again and began walking towards my 'car'. Luckily, the old lady drove in the opposite direction. I smiled once more and thanked the sky again as I began the long, long walk home. My poor feet!
But I had one thing spurring me on, and it was the fact that I'd seen him again.
End Flashback
I sighed and dipped my head underneath the warm water. I was so very thankful that it was all over. I was home again. Safe, free. Never needing to relive that ever again.
Did you get that Edward? If yes, would you please tell the others? I don't think I'd be able to.
I hoped Edward had been listening in, because I had folded those memories, wrapped them up and locked them away in an iron box in the back of my mind. The key? I threw that somewhere in my brain as well. I never wanted to remember those things again.
As I sat there in the tub, scrubbing myself clean, I smiled ruefully. Déjà vu was a real bitch sometimes. And being psychic. I guess dreams really did have a meaning behind them, especially mine.
After I washed my hair and pulled the plug on the water, I stood drying myself off with a red towel; one that was mine. It felt so heavenly soft against my skin that I actually sighed in pleasure. I heard them before I saw them as I was pulling on the warm, soft, black and grey sweats Rachel had given me. A smile tugged at my lips when I heard their voices, one was crying, the other relieved, the third ecstatic and the fourth relieved and pained.
I hurriedly brushed my hair and quickly brushed my teeth. It felt oh so good to have clean hair and a fresh mouth again!
It had gone quiet on the other side of the door, except for Edward's voice retelling a shortened version of my kidnapping. Thank you, Eddie.
I waited for Edward to finish before I walked out into the lounge. Aleera, Fallon, Lacy and Leah were all there, along with Embry and Ethan. Aleera had tearstains on her cheeks as she smiled at me; her eyes watery. Fallon looked like years have been taken off of her shoulders; relieved and happy. Lacy was grinning widely, but I could see the tears in her eyes as she tried to hide them. I just knew my cousin well enough to know what to look for. Leah, well, she looked relieved, but there was a pain hidden in her eyes. A pain I knew, but didn't understand coming from her.
In a matter of seconds I was crushed between the bodies of my best friends, a tangle of limbs and words. I winced when one of them pressed against my bandaged arm. "Girls, I'm glad to see you too, but you're kinda hurting my hurt arm." I joked.
They apologized and pulled back, each one holding onto me in some way like they were afraid I was gonna disappear any second again. "We missed you so much! We were so scared when no one could find you." Aleera whispered in my ear as tears streamed over her sad smile.
"It's okay, I'm safe, home and nothings gonna happen ever again. Did Edward not tell you how badass I was?"
They laughed and nodded, leading me to the couch. I stopped before Leah and smiled at her. Unusual for Leah, she pulled me in for a hug. "I'm so glad you're home." I nodded and pulled away, taking my seat among my best friends.
I got the same phrases from Ethan and Embry, and I nodded; noticing that Jacob, Paul, Rachel and Carlisle were missing. Edward, most likely reading my thoughts answered my unspoken question. "Paul took Rachel to his house. She was really freaking out after I told them what happened. She was reluctant to leave, but after much coaxing that you'd still be here when she returned, she went with Paul. Carlisle went back to the house to tell the others you're home and to… find out what happened with the Volturi – Aro, Caius and Marcus – and then see what we can do to end them, if they escaped the fire." I went to protest, but a glare from Edward made me shut my mouth. It was a look of hatred and death – not directed at me… I hoped.
He continued. "Jacob went out to get you some food…" The words barely left his mouth when the front door opened and Jake walked in carrying a Styrofoam box. My mouth watered at the scent, and only then did I realize how hungry I actually was.
Jacob grinned at me and walked towards the kitchen. He returned moments later with a plate and eating utensils and a can of Coke. He set the plate and can down on the table in front of me and took a seat next to Edward. I smiled a thanks at him and looked at the waffles and ice-cream in confusion. "Waffles for dinner?"
The room erupted in laughter and I looked around confused.
"It's not nighttime, Soph. It's like half past six in the morning." Lacy replied as she wiped away the tears that had fallen when she laughed.
"Oh." I smiled sheepishly and dug in. It was the most delicious thing I've ever eaten. I had to keep reminding myself to chew and eat slowly so that I wouldn't choke. When the waffles were finished and the can of Coke was drained, I realized something as I gazed around the room of relieved and small-smiling people.
The food in my stomach turned to lead and my heart tugged ferociously in my chest. My heart wanted out… wanted to run to someone that was not here but who I needed the most to be. I scanned the faces again, looking for those warm brown puddles I loved and the infectious smile that lit up anyone's day.
But it… he wasn't there, here. Why wasn't he here?
"Jake," I began. My voice trembled slightly as looked my brother in the eyes. Everyone went quiet around us and Edward sighed.
I took a deep breath and asked in a shaky, needy voice. "Where's Seth?"
End of the Chapter. I know, I hate cliffhangers too. But I'm starting on writing the next chapter as we speak…er type.
There will be ONE more CHAPTER, and then I'm gonna put up an EPOLIGUE. That will then be the end of "Deadly Secrets".
