Chapter Eleven:
*-Feral Eyes, Tame Heart-*
A thick tension coated the room and everyone shifted around nervously, eyes roaming the walls. I frowned and sat forward, ignoring the slight sting in my arm.
I stared at my brother until he locked eyes with me, "Jacob, where is Seth?"
Jacob cleared his throat and ran a hand over his face, "I'll take you to him after you've gotten some sleep in."
I glared at him, "No, Jake. I want to go see him now."
"Sophy, you need to rest. I promise I'll take you to see him after you've slept for a bit." His mouth set in a firm line, eyes hard.
Okay, so he wanted to be that way. "Jake, imagine you were me… wouldn't you want to see Renesmee as soon as possible too?" It was a low blow, but it was the truth!
Jake's expression softened and he sighed, standing up. "Fine! I'll take you."
I stood up and pulled the shoes on Rachel had left beside the couch. The others stayed in the house, saying they'd wait for us. Edward followed us outside, he and Jake leading the way to my best friend and the person with my heart.
Jacob turned to Edward, "How was he when you checked up on him?"
A dull pain shone in Edward's golden gaze and he shook his head, "The same as always. I think it would do them both good if they saw each other, but it would be wise not to go alone. You don't know what he'd do in the state he's in."
I raised an eyebrow, "Seth wouldn't hurt me. And what do you mean 'the state he's in'?"
Jacob turned to me and placed his hands on my shoulders, "Soph, when a wolf's away from his imprint it hurts, when their imprint is taken away from them and they have no idea where she is, it maddens them. Seth lost it when we couldn't find you and he hasn't been the same since. He hasn't phased back in four months and doesn't speak to anyone in the pack mind."
I gaped at him, stunned. "He's that bad?"
Jacob nodded and we began walking again, "It worsened when we realized there was a vampire's scent mixed with yours. He went crazy. Almost wrecked the whole forest."
After that bit of information, I stayed silent the rest of the way to wherever Seth was. After about ten minutes, we reached the only cemetery in La Push. It was dark and very large, surrounded by trees. The sun was starting to rise, giving light to the worn paths weaving between the tombstones.
"Why are we in the cemetery?" I asked, stepping over a pile of withered flowers.
"Seth hasn't left his father's grave since he stopped phasing back." Edward said, his movements fluid as he maneuvered his way around the graves. "It's his way of grieving, but still clinging to the hope that you're alive."
My heart swelled at the words and my eyes stung. He was in that much pain… and it's all my fault. If I hadn't walked through the forest that day, they wouldn't have captured me and taken me away from him. I'd caused my family and friends so much pain.
Edward shook his head, "It's not your fault, Sophy. You didn't know that the Volturi was after you. It is their fault, not yours."
"Edward's right, Sophy. And I don't want you thinking that this is your fault. You were a victim too… one that endured more pain than we did." Jacob sighed, bumping my shoulder lightly.
Silence enveloped us once more and the sun rose higher, brightening the entire graveyard and throwing shadows on the grass and the tombstones. Dead leaved crunched beneath our feet as we walked to one of the far ends of the cemetery, a place where most of the Council members were buried.
We stopped before Harry Clearwater's tombstone, a few days' old flowers laying before it. The forest lay a few feet behind it, the trees and their shadows dancing in the light breeze.
My eyes darted around, looking for the large sandy colored wolf whose eyes did funny things to my heart and tummy. "Where is he?"
"Just wait, he's bound to come out, especially because there's a new scent here." Jacob said, patting my shoulder and standing in front of me slightly.
"He's close, I can hear his thoughts. He's… not in a very good mood." Edward sighed, shoulders weary.
"Seth!" Jake called out, his voice echoing through the forest. "Seth, c'mon, there's someone here to see you."
It was silent after that and both Jacob and Edward sighed. Then, a low growl reverberated around us, startling the flying insects around the graves. Heavy paw-steps thumped on the ground, branches cracking and snapping from the weight of the large animal.
My heartbeat increased and my nerves had me biting my lip. The first thing to emerge from the trees was a long sandy colored snout, then two large paws and then a massive head with two familiar warm brown eyes. The only difference was that they looked dull, lifeless and so hurt and angry.
My hand shot to my mouth on its own when the rest of him came into view. He was slightly larger than when I saw him last, but his demeanor was tense and aggressive. His gaze swept over us, but it was as though he didn't really see us.
I stepped forward, hand outstretched to touch him. His hackles raised and he bared his teeth at me, causing Jacob to push me back and glare at Seth. "Calm down, Seth. She's not going to hurt you. Look closely at who she is."
Seth growled again, lowering his head and took a step backwards.
"Jacob, let her speak to him. He's hearing you, but isn't comprehending the words. She'll be able to pull him the hole he fell in. He won't hurt her." Edward said, eyes locked on Seth the entire time.
Jake sighed in frustration and nodded, stepping out of my path. Slowly, I walked forward, my uninjured arm outstretched. Seth growled again, dazed eyes glaring. "Shh, Seth, it's me. It's Sophy." My eyes stung but I bit back the tears.
Seth flinched at my name, a flicker of pain and recognition flashing in his gaze and for a moment the haze lifted from his eyes and it seemed as though he saw me. But then it returned and he lowered his head, a low warning rumbling in his chest. I gulped back my fear and pushed forward, ignoring his growl. He wouldn't hurt me. My Seth wouldn't hurt me.
"Seth, hey, look at me." His brown gaze lifted and locked with mine, "See, I'm Sophy. I'm home and safe… now I need you to come back to me."
The haziness lifted again and he shook his large head, still growling. His eyes settled on me again and the pain I saw in them had my heart lurching and my eyes stinging even more.
"It's working, Sophy, keep it up." Edward murmured softly.
I nodded and took the last few steps forward, standing directly in front of him. I reached out to touch his muzzle and he pulled back, baring his teeth. "Shh, hey, calm down. I'm not going to hurt you, okay?"
I reached out and softly laid my hand on his muzzle, his soft fur tickling the pads of my fingers and my palm. His eyes fell shut and he leaned into my touch, a familiar soft purr-like noise vibrating his chest. I moved my hand up and between his ears, stroking his head. "I'm here, okay? I'm never leaving again." My voice shook as I spoke and I leaned my head against his side, hugging him tightly. The pain in my chest echoed away now that the distance between us was gone.
Seth jerked away from me and ran back into the forest. I stood there, staring at the spot he'd been standing in and felt the pain return. I turned and looked at my brother with blurred eyes, a sob stuck in my chest. "I guess he do-."
My words were cut off when two scorching arms pulled me backwards and spun me around. I was pulled into a warm chest and soft, warm lips covered mine in a fierce hurried kiss. I melted against Seth's body, my arms circling his bare waist and settled above the hem of his pants. His scent invaded my senses and my knees weakened. He pulled back and buried his head between my neck and shoulders, his breath warm on my skin. I hugged him tight, pressing my face against his chest and listened to the thumping of his heart – a sound I thought I'd never hear again.
His chest shook and wetness dripped down my neck. He was crying and mumbling inaudible words, but the sound of his voice broke the little strength I had at keeping my tears at bay.
I was faintly aware of my brother and Edward leaving, but I didn't care. I was warm and safe in the arms of the only boy that has ever held my heart and I wouldn't trade it for anything in the world.
"You're back…I-I can't believe it – you're alive! I-I thought I lost you. I love you so much, Sophy… and I thought I'd never-." He started, his voice sending shivers down my spine
"Hey, shh… no, don't say that, okay? I love you and no-one on this planet will keep us apart, okay? I'm not leaving – I'll never leave you." I whispered against his chest.
His arms tightened around me and he nodded, lifting his head. The sight of his face, of his beautiful face had my heart stuttering and causing another onslaught of tears to hit me. The spark in his eyes returned, their warmth curling my toes. I brought my uninjured arm up and cupped his cheek, sighing when he leaned into my touch. The warmth of his body wrapped around me and I felt secure, safe, home.
"Sophy, I promise – I swear to you that as long as I live nothing will ever happen to you again. You're my everything and I wouldn't be able to live without you. I love you, forever and always." He murmured, kissing my lips and then my forehead.
I nodded and sighed, leaning my head against his chest and listened to the beating of his heart – my own personal lullaby. A lullaby that assured me that I'll always have a home and someone to love me… and that will have me fighting to the ends of the earth to return to it.
And I believed Seth's words, I trusted them and I loved them, because in his arms and with his love I'll be able to do anything. I would do anything just to return to his warm embrace.
