Chapter 5
Sigyn stared out of tinted windows at crowds of people walking towards the entrance of a huge building.
They were all wearing extravagant clothing; men in nice suits and ties, woman in beautiful dresses. She could hear the few groups of people as they walked by the van a couple feet away, speaking a langauge she did not know.
She could almost see the entrance where Loki had walked just a few minutes before, quick to get lost in the huge crowd of people.
Sigyn waited with a man she did not know, obviously there to guard her, in a very suspicious looking van. She had no idea what Loki was planning but she knew it was something mischievous. It was only in his nature of course.. Which would be laughable if he was his old self. The self that didn't purposefully harm people.
"Do not follow me, no matter what you hear.." Loki had practically threatened her before leaving; dressed in a suit and tie along with a signature green scarf. He certainly must wear green.
Of course she wasn't going to obey him, not when people's lives were in harms way. He had to of known her better than this.. Perhaps he thinks he could just scare her into obedience? Well, if he thinks she will just sit idly by he is mistaken. She will wait until the guard is preoccupied, which wouldn't be long considering he was falling to sleep.
It had been a long plane ride here on a private jet that Barton had taken over by killing the pilot. She felt a small sense of shame remembering having fallen asleep in Loki's arms, laying comfortably against his chest..
He was now out doing Odin knows what while she waited in the car feeling absolutely ashamed with herself. She ignored the small sense of delight knowing that Loki had shown that he had still loved her; She would not accept him for who he was now. That, she was sure of. Nor could she fall in love him, for what kind of person would that make her if she could love someone like him?
She sighed sadly as she brought her knees up to her chin, feet on the seat, and played with her gold anklets. She yawned involuntarily, suddenly feeling tired. Before she could blink the tiredness away she heard an eruption of screams coming from the building. It certainly awoken her along with the man in the seat in front of her.
They both stared out of the window as people came rushing out of the building screaming. Not long after, Loki appeared in full armor like she had only ever rarely seen in her dreams.
She watched, eyes wide with surprise as he shot the scepter at a police car; it abruptly flipped upside down with a loud crash as Sigyn instinctively grabbed on to the door handle opening it only slightly before the man reached over and swiftly slammed the door in her face.
"Don't you dare, I have orders." The man told her harshly, earning a glare from Sigyn. She wanted so badly to see if the police officer were okay and to possibly help if she could.
She watched as Loki trapped a ton of people, herding them in with his clones. They began to hesitantly kneel before him by his command she could plainly hear.
Anxiety crawled over her as she watched an old man slowly rise up from the crowd..she had to strain her hears to hear what he and Loki were saying, it was not pleasant. . Loki's words were smooth but his gestures were too harsh. He was angry. The elder man was stiff with terror no doubt but he was indeed incredibly brave for standing up against Loki. She shook her head as Loki said the words look to your elders, knowing exactly what he would do next..
"Loki,no.."She could only whisper as he pointed his scepter at the man, Sigyn immediately closed her eyes before he could kill the poor man.
When she opened her eyes again, instead of the old man on the ground, it was Loki himself. Her heart involuntarily leaped with worry before noticing the strange man in red, white and blue.
A strange looking helicopter hovered above and pointed a magnificently huge weapon at Loki as a familiar voice began to speak through the loud speakers, telling him to surrender. Sigyn immediately pulled on the doors handle again but the man quickly locked it before it could open.
"I eint gonna tell you again!" He yelled this time.
She ignored him, too entranced in the events going on outside. Sigyn's heart was heavy with involuntary worry for Loki. She could not help the feelings she had watching him in battle with the colorful man, she hated the sight.
Confusion quickly replaced the fear as a Midgardian tune erupted from above. She pressed her forehead up against the window, trying to see where it was coming from until Loki was suddenly hit with a force so strong it knocked him into the stairs, slamming onto his back. A painful yell escaped his lips; he was now out numbered.
Sigyn took notice of the guard entranced in the events as well and quickly unlocked the door, opening it and stepping out but was soon jerked back abruptly by her wrist.
"I told you to stay put!" The guard grip grew harder as he shouted at her. She immediately snapped her head around with pure anger. Loki needed her.
"Loki is in danger!" She shouted back at him before ripping her wrist out of his mortal grasp and running over to them so fast she had almost fallen.
Sigyn was next to Loki in an instant, staring at both the strange men with her hands out in a 'lower your weapons' gesture. Loki immediately glared at her, she met his eyes for an instant, just enough to see the a worry in them before turning back to the men.
"Do not hurt him, please!" She immediately told the man in iron she believed was known as Tony Stark. She had heard a few things about him but had never met him until now.
"Who the hell are you?" Tony responded, lowering his hand. He clearly did not think she was a threat.
"She is of no business of yours! Let her be, she is innocent." Loki exclaimed with pure malice as he stood up, grabbing Sigyn by the arms.
"You are a fool, Sigyn." He hissed quietly at her.
Sigyn rolled her eyes and looked back at Tony and the patriotic man.
"If you take him then you must take me as well. He had kept me hostage. I am a SHIELD nurse by the name of Sydney. Please, you can ask Fury yourself.."
"No need. Romanoff is familiar with you apparently." Tony interrupted.
"Should we take her back to base?" Steve asked eyeing Sigyn.
"Reindeer games?" Tony looked over at Loki instead.
"Take her with me and I will kill everything you hold dear, slowly-"
"So its a yes." Tony cut Loki off as if what he had said didn't phase him at all.
Loki's palm found his forehead and immediately started rubbing it, a headache had formed.
He grasped Sigyn's arm and pulled her over to him protectively, although roughly, before Tony could reach out and take her instead.
Loki looked as if he would rip him in half right then and there if he were to touch her. Tony shrugged and turned around to head to the jet, followed by the patriotic man then Loki and Sigyn.
Back on the jet things were awkward. None of them would look over at Loki to catch him staring at her with hidden anger that only shown in his eyes. Although he seemed to be in a better mood, Sigyn tried not to stare back at him as his eyes bore into her entirety and made her feel regret.
Tony and Steve began to have a conversation of their own, although it sounded like a light argument about something she didn't care to listen to.
This gave her a chance to speak to Loki more privately whilst they were caught up in their own conversation.
"Did you honestly think I would have stayed behind?" She spoke solemnly, eyes on the floor.
He glared at her.
She slowly turned her vision to his.
He looked at the men then back at Sigyn, making sure they were preoccupied before replying. He bent forward a little.
"I had specific plans to make sure of your safety, yet you squandered them." His voice was low, precise. It made her feel as if she had made the wrong choice after all.
Her safety? She was with a corporation that specialized in protecting people..what would harm her here?
"Loki. What are you planning?" She asked suspiciously, hearing the drops of hard rain hit the outsides of the jet, lightning soon followed..
Sigyn saw the immediate change in Loki's expression. This certainly confused her. She tilted her head to the side trying to find a clue in his expression as to what was coming..something not good..
Sigyn's thoughts were caught off by the man called Steve asking Loki the same question that was on her mind.
"What's the matter? Scared of a little lightning?" His expression was uneasy yet hard as he spoke.
"I'm not overly fond of what follows." Loki's expression on the other hand was..frightened?
Sigyn's brow raised in sheer confusion as her gaze averted to Tony and Steve.
They seemed highly confused as well.
Instantly there was a loud thud on the roof as if someone had literally landed right on top of it, shaking the entire jet.
Sigyn looked to Loki with panic to see him absolutely in fright as well..
Tony let the door fall open.
Instantly, with a loud thud, a man appeared in the exit way; wind blowing his golden hair around with a furiousness that matched his expression. His eyes were on Loki.
Just as the strange man stood up, walking over to Loki in a rush, Sigyn had remembered who he was for he was in her dreams as well.
He knocked Tony down abruptly and immediately grabbed Loki by the neck, hauling him out of the jet with one swift move just as Sigyn undid her seat belt.
She stood up in a rush but was too late. They were out of sight.
"Thor." Sigyn whispered. Memories of their friendship flooded her mind and made her feel warm.
He was angry for a good reason, she knew that to be true.
Before she knew it, only her and Natasha remained in the jet. She was too lost in her memories to notice Tony and Steve flying out after them.
"Agent Romanoff, Thor is a friend you must tell them not to fight him for they will surely lose.." Sigyn looked over at Natasha who slightly turned for a second to look at Sigyn. Now that Thor had Mjolnir there was no stopping the thunderer.
"They are big boys, Syd. They can take care of themselves." She said simply.
Sigyn smiled at the old nickname from her Midgardian name 'Sydney'.
"I fear I still worry for them. For Loki as well. Please, as much as I've missed your nickname for me I must insist that you call me by my birth name now; Sigyn." She said staring out at the wide open door as if they would all return in a matter of seconds.
"I'm glad you've finally found your real name, Sigyn.. Why do you worry for Loki? He isn't a good person..he has killed a number of people, Sig. May I call you that?" Natasha replied keeping her eyes ahead of her.
Sigyn smiled at the new closely related nickname. "Yes you may.." She paused to sit back down, her eyes never leaving the outside.
"Loki was not always like this. He has restored most of my memories and I remember it to be the truth. He has changed a great deal and I know not why." She sighed, holding the sides of her face in her hands.
"Tell me.." Natasha turned to her with closely watched eyes. Her brow was raised. "What is he planning?" Her expression was hard but her eyes were anticipating.
Sigyn then looked at her, eyes meeting and holding each others gaze. Sigyn could not lie for the life of her and everyone knew it.
"He honestly did not tell me a single word about his plans here, and for that I know it mustn't be great. For if it were good he would have told me. That I assure you." She replied honestly even if it ruined his plans in the slightest of ways. She deeply cared for Loki, but she would not let him hurt people.
Natasha stared at her a moment longer before she turned her head back around, seemingly satisfied with her information.
They had finally arrived at the base. Sigyn was lead by Natasha to a room and left there, closing the door behind her. Sigyn could see out of a screen that looked to be a huge glass cage placed in the center in another part of the base she knew not where.
She wondered if it was for Loki.
Not too long after, everyone was back and piled into the room along with Natasha once more.
Sigyn saw that the cage was indeed for Loki. He now stood inside of it, the site made her chest ache. A feeling she couldn't quite place still.
Fury and Loki were speaking as everyone listened to the both intently. Sigyn listened specifically to what Loki was saying..She did not want to admit it to herself..but everything he was saying was indeed the truth. It was the harsh truth, but still the truth.
Sigyn had known SHIELD was up to something bigger than what they had said to be. But they were still more right than everyone else who was wrong. What ever it was that Fury was hiding it had to be for a reasonable reason.
Sigyn swallowed, not wanting to look around to see everyone else's expressions she knew must be hate towards Loki for speaking such things about SHIELD. So her gaze remained at the screen until Loki was finished speaking.
Fury then left after making a few snarky replies and the screen then turned off.
"He really grows on you doesn't he." The man called Banner was the first to speak. Sigyn felt a small sense of delight from this. Even if he did not mean it..Loki had certainly grew on her.
"So, Loki's gonna drag this out." Steve sighed then turned to Sigyn. "Miss, you were with him for quite some time, surely you must know something."
"She doesn't know anything. Trust me." Natasha immediately replied before Sigyn could basically say the exact same thing.
Steve nodded then turned his vision elsewhere.
"Thor, what's his play?" He asked in a hard tone.
Sigyn listened as Thor spoke along with everyone else. They mentioned Selvig and she saw the hurt in Thor's eyes but it did not rival the hurt in Natasha's expression and voice when she mentioned Barton.
Sigyn was also sad for he was one of her dear friends. He was the one that took the time to teach her about most Midgardian ways. Natasha would as well but not as often as Barton. They had become close because of it.
Sigyn felt a little offended when Banner had called Loki's brain a 'bag of cats'. But she quickly told herself it was true. He was no longer the same as he was. Something had shut off inside of him that could not be so easily fixed.
She was surprised to hear Thor stand up for his brother. She smiled because this gave her hope. Surely if Thor could still have faith for Loki so could she.
"He killed 80 people in 2 days." Natasha dead panned.
"He's adopted."
Sigyn abruptly sat up straighter, abruptly surprised, looking at Thor incredulously.
"He is what?!"
Thor looked at Sigyn sadly, realizing she had disappeared before Loki found out about his true heritage.
"Yes, lady Sigyn. It is true. Loki is not my brother by blood..it is unfortunate that you were gone in his time of need. I could not help him." Sigyn could see the deep hurt in Thor's eyes as he remembered what had happened to his younger brother.
Sigyn slowly stood up and went over to Thor, grabbing his arm gently. "What is his true heritage, my dear friend?" She asked softly, pleadingly.
Thor shook his head solemnly. "I do not think I should be the one to tell you. It should come from him alone, dear sister." Thor put his huge arm around Sigyn like he used to.
"Sister?" Her eyes were wide with shock.
Thor chuckled gently. "Yes. You and Loki were betrothed." Thor smiled down at her, although clear sadness remained in his eyes.
Sigyn was absolutely shocked. She had known they were close child hood friends and lovers even..but they were to be wedded. Now she understood why Loki was so over protective of her.
She was speechless as Tony came into the room. Chattering away like always about something Banner had said to everyone else.
But she could only think of Loki now. She had to go see him some how. She must find out all the things about him that she had missed while away.
She sighed frustratingly. She tried to think about who had caused her disappearance but she still could not even manage a brief image.. Irritatingly she could not recall the memories no matter how hard she tried. As if those memories were guarded by another layer of thick magic that she could not possibly break.
She paced around the room ignoring the looks some of the team gave her. Tony was now talking about Galaga..? Whatever in Valhalla that was.
She immediately toned him out once again. It was decided. She must see Loki and demand to know the answers. Demand to know absolutely everything about him that her memories could no longer help with.
She tried to think of a way to sneak down to the cage where he was kept. Since the screens were now off they wouldn't be able to hear her and Lok's conversation. This was the perfect time while all of them were now distracted about Loki's plans.
Now they were talking about flying monkeys in which she had no idea how that came to be and suddenly slammed her fists on the table before her.
"I must use the facilities!" She shouted as everyone turned to her. Tony and Banner already haven walked away from the room. Only Steve, Thor and Natasha remained.
"I'll take you." Natasha said after a moment of confusion.
Natasha led her down hallways after hallways, as Sigyn was making a mental note of where everything was. They had passed the room she believed Loki was held in, before turning a few more lefts to get to the bathroom.
Just then Fury called Natasha through the walkie-talkie, startling Sigyn.
"Agent Romanoff, I need a word with you." Fury said in his usual snarky tone.
"Copy." Was all Natasha said before turning to Sigyn. "Will you be able to find your way back?"
"Yes, I believe so. Thank you for your company to the restroom." She replied, giving her friend a genuine smile.
Natasha's lips tugged upward just barely before turning around and leaving.
After she was gone from Sigyn's view she quickly walked back the other way they came, hiding behind walls before turning down another hallway.
She did not know why she took the time to do so, she couldn't have possibly done anything if someone had caught her, for she hated hurting people, but non the less she remained sneaky anyways.
When she had finally reached the doors she paused to let out her breath she hadn't realized she'd been holding from nervousness.
She slowly placed her hands on the doors and pushed open.
All she could see was a black metal pathway in a dim room, metal railings on both sides for safety; that must lead to Loki's cage. As soon as she took a step out onto the metal path she could see the sides of the cage..
She swallowed quietly before walking forward toward the center of the connecting pathways, she was now in front of his cage.
There he sat at the other end of the cage on a metal bench, head back and eyes closed.
Sigyn took a silent step closer..
"I did not think you would visit." His eyes opened slowly, revealing a certain solemness, his expression blank.
"Loki..we must talk. Your brother-"
"Thor." He cut her off.
"Thor...he has told me something of great importance..please, I need to hear the truth from you." She walked up to the cage and placed her hand upon it gently..If only she could speak more privately with him.
Loki slowly leaned forward with a confused expression. "And what truth has he told you, Sigyn?"
"Please, Loki. Your heritage... I do not wish to judge..I simply wish to know." Her voice was pleading, her eyes were sympathetic as she spoke.
"Why?.." He stood up and began walking toward her, stopping just a few inches away from the glass. "Why must you know, truly?" He asked condescendingly.
"I told you. I wish to know because...well.." She paused, honestly not wanting to say it a loud.
"Well?" Loki asked insolently.
She furrowed her eyes at his sudden impatience.
"Is it not obvious that I care for you, Loki?" She looked away embarrassed as his eyes grew intrigued.
There was a pause before Loki exhaled, closing his eyes only for a moment before opening them once more.
"I am of Jotunheim. Is that truly what you wished to know." His eyes bore into hers, waiting with hidden anticipation at what her reply would be.
Sigyn smiled sadly, for she understood. She sighed knowingly.
"You know better than anyone that I am also not of Asgard. It was not something I was proud of when I had first found out.. I had hated the thought.. Oh, Loki..what difference does it make? We are no less better than they because of our heritage. It is not something we choose, but must accept."
He narrowed his eyes and turned away from her. His back was now facing her as he spoke.
"It does not matter anymore. I have made my decision and there is no going back.." He turned only slightly as he continued. "I've come too far for that."
There was malice in his eyes but also sadness. Sadness for something she could not place.
She shook her head slowly in disbelief. "Oh Loki..Thor and I both believe you are not past forgiveness, please come back with us..stop these violent acts now before they become too much, Loki. Please.."
Loki turned fully around abruptly, eyes narrowed.
"You think I can just go back to the way I was? My less powerful and mischievous self. Nothing but a trickster! I am much more than I have ever been! You think you can walk in here and change everything?!" He was so close to the glass, so much that if it were not there they would be but inches away. Pure anger in his eyes without a hint of regret at his hurtful words.
Sigyn did not realize she was crying until he had finished. She felt hot tears run down her cheek.
"So this madness of obtaining this realm is more important to you?" Her voice came out in just a whisper.
He pursed his lips before replying. "Can you not see that I'm better than I was." He stated as he turned around walking back to the seat.
Sigyn clenched her teeth with anger, hands bawled into fists at her sides.
"Better? You think murdering people is better? You truly think the person you were in Asgard is lesser than who you are now?! I still don't remember much but I do remember how compassionate and caring you were! And now you can't even stop this delusional heroism and come back with me?! I was there for you!"
Loki turned around sharply, anger plain in his features.
"Where were you when I needed you most? Gone like some lost child!"
"So this is how you get back at me? Act too high and mighty for redemption? I understand your pain much more than anyone else but your actions are unacceptable! You are being foolish, Loki!"
"No. Thinking you were no longer naive was foolish! There is someone that is more powerful than I that will love for me to watch you die! Leave, Sigyn!"
"You no longer care for me remember?! I no longer care about the empty threats you posses and burden me with!" Sigyn screamed at him. Now she felt like her old self again. Arguing like a little girl throwing a tantrum.
She hated how someone could make her so angry.
Loki said nothing just continued to seethe.
Sigyn wiped the tears away harshly.
"I was happy before..I was happy, Loki! You have given me my memories but also have saddened me when I was no longer saddened. I will not return."
She couldn't look at him. She just ran out of the room and through the doors open, running down hallways, anywhere, just away from where he was.
She ended up going back to the bathroom pacing back and forth with anger before her fist hit the mirror. Glass shattered all over the floor.
She then felt bad for whoever had to clean the mess of broken glass up and decided it'd be best to clean it herself.
She bent down and began collecting the glass in her hands, careful not to cut kneel in any. Tears hit the shiny floor as she heard a knock on the door. Before she could wipe her tears away, Natasha came in.
She furrowed her brows at Sigyns bleeding knuckles and tear shrieked face. She sighed frustratingly.
"You went to see Loki didn't you." She stated.
Sigyn sighed sadly and stood up to throw the glass away. "I thought you had left.."
"I did. I was asked to interrogate Loki...when I saw you weren't back yet I thought I'd come check on you." Natasha stood there, legs apart just slightly, arms folded across her chest.
Sigyn knew she wasn't the comforting type so she stood up, wiped her tears and smiled up at Natasha.
"I am fine I do warn you that he is grumpy..I will take my leave now. Excuse me.." Sigyn said walking past Natasha and out of the restroom. She took her time walking back to the room.
She didn't want to listen to Loki and Natasha's conversation. She didn't want to see or hear Loki at all anymore.
