Blaine went to break away but Kurt quickly grabbed his hand.
"It's okay Blaine really," He whispered wishing he hadn't shouted out in such alarm to make Blaine look so nervous when his dad arrived. Kurt stood up straight, and looked ready to back Blaine up.
They were standing side by side in the middle of the coffee shop with Burt's eyes on them and an atmosphere that said something was about to happen.
Blaine didn't look so sure in fact he looked to Burt like he was being held at gunpoint but Kurt gripped his hand tighter which kept him from running away and out into the car park like he could see Blaine was probably wanting to do as saw him glance that way in a quick moment, but the grip of his hand made Blaine's posture relax a little more.
Burt did look intimidating and Kurt couldn't blame Blaine for looking slightly intimidated by the man.
He wasn't petite like Kurt and he spoke with what was on his mind when necessary which Kurt knew got to some people. He remembered Blaine saying just moments before that Burt made him feel like he wasn't good enough for Kurt when he asked questions about him at the hospital, but Kurt wanted to prove otherwise.
"What's going on here?" Burt inquired in a not so welcoming voice as soon as he slammed the door and folded his arms over his chest expecting an answer. Burt stood his ground suggesting that one of them tell him what this was about.
The manager at the back had only just come back in seeing what all the fuss was about when the girl from the front inquired her to check it out, Kurt had seen the girl go back into their staff room and could only guess what she must off thought and told the manager as they watch the manager confront Burt.
"Sir if you have a problem with these two being gay I'm going to have to ask you to leave, we have an anti-discrimination policy," Kurt almost laughed but held himself together since he was trying to be supportive of Blaine.
Burt managed to show a face of complete absurdity "What?! He's my son, and if you don't mind. I'd appreciate some privacy around here so I could talk to him,"
"Dad," Kurt said wincing at the harsh tone.
"Sir, whether he's your son or not we still don't tolerate our customers not respecting…" The manager stuttered.
"And what makes you think I would do or say anything to my son that was inappropriate….I'm merely wondering how it is he ended up with this guy in the first place, a father has a right to question his son," Burt quizzed the lady glancing to Blaine midsentence as she who was still being slightly cautious around Burt like he was going to throw a fit nodded "Of course sir," she hesitated.
"I just wanted to make sure we're clear on the expectation as guess in the Lima Bean and explain the respect we expect that each individual would have of each other as customers and staff family related or not but I may have overstepped sir, my apologies," The manager said sincerely. Burt looked astonished.
"You have," Burt agreed and Blaine felt himself relax a bit when Burt's gaze softened and his posture looked less irritated and angry as of before "But it's good to see people don't care about my son's sexuality, especially when he's not in school, so thank you."
"You're welcome sir, we're closing up in 10 minutes, would you like a last order placed for you and your son before we have to let you out? On the house?"
"Sure, but I'll add one for the other kid too, I'll even pay for the hospitality,"
Kurt looked up to Blaine's face who had a complete look of amazement. He was staring at Burt like he didn't quite hear him properly. Kurt tugged at his hand and Blaine looked over to him on his right and smiled as he saw Kurt's proud face "What?" He whispered.
Kurt shrugged and then whispered back "You're a good kisser by the way, don't worry. It's going to be fine,"
Blaine bit his lip in a grin and tried to hide it when Burt turned around to look at them at the counter.
"We're still going to have that chat, don't think you're off the hook Kurt but I suggest we get this coffee and do it at my place unless you got somewhere to go Blaine?"
"No sir, I don't," Blaine hesitated but just by looking at Kurt's smile he could see he did the right thing.
"Alright, now what do you kids want?"
"Non fat mocha and medium drip," Kurt answered.
Burt raised an eyebrow.
"You know his coffee order?"
"Of course he does," Blaine chuckled as Kurt elbowed him looking sternly at Burt and grinned. "Of course I do,"
They got their order and the lady put the closed sign on the door when she let them out. "Alright, Kurt I suggest you drive home with me," Burt suggested holding his non fat coffee which Kurt had insisted he buy as well.
Blaine agreed and went to his separate car looking sideways at Kurt first who smiled warmly at him.
"See you soon,"
"Yeah," Blaine smiled back, he could see the look on Kurt's face like he was worried Blaine might use this as his escape, but this was his one chance to prove to Mr Hummel that he was right for Kurt, he was determined to see some justice in this and during that kiss back in the Lima Bean…Blaine couldn't help but think how right it had felt. How Kurt had made his stomach flip like his 13 year old self when he first had a crush on that boy Joshua only 10 times more.
There was that time Sebastian kissed him back in high school before he left, but it was sloppy and behind the benches of an empty football field. He had felt dirty when Sebastian used his tongue and grinded himself against him. He shivered thinking about it. Blaine drove to Kurt's house trying to forget that incident as he thought what to say to Burt.
He had been an idiot for running away from it in the first place no wonder why Kurt didn't look like Blaine wanted to be there.
When he arrived he parked the car outside and fixed up his hair in the mirror before getting out.
He could see they were already there as Burt and Kurt were talking in the car sitting in the driveway. Both had serious facial expressions so he didn't know what they could be saying but he knew it was about him at least because he saw Burt mouth his name.
He tried not to look at them as he leaned against his car to wait for them but he couldn't help but worry about what Burt must think of him.
Then Kurt noticed him through his mirror and the smile on his face was worth a million dollars. Burt got out first obviously he had told Kurt to wait in the car as Kurt didn't follow and he gave him a look that told him he wished he could have.
"Kurt gave me a rundown on how he met you and what's happened since then. Let's make it clear I'm not happy that you made him upset when he rang me to go pick him up, and that you left him alone and all that but he did tell me you make him happy, and when he explained why you got upset I sort of get where you're coming from. Now I want to ask you, how old are you?"
"19 turning 20," Blaine fidgeted and lowered his eyes slightly over Burt's gaze. How a man can make you feel so small was beyond Blaine's knowledge.
"You ever done anything stupid, like break the law or anything?"
"Not really sir," Blaine said quietly playing with his hands.
There was silence. "What do you mean by that?" Burt asked.
"My dad doesn't really approve of my sexuality Mr Hummel. I haven't broken the law or anything except in my own home. Kurt's real lucky to have you,"
"Your parents don't like you being gay?"
Blaine's eyes shot up looking dazed "No. That's not…my mother is the most caring person in the world sir, but she's in hospital and she could be dying anytime soon. I should be there right now to be honest, I should…but then there is also Kurt…I can't not hang around him either, he's my rock, he means a lot to me and my father…he was never around neither was my brother,"
"Does your mother know where you are?" Blaine nodded "Then don't worry so much," Blaine was about to object but Burt continued.
"I wouldn't want Kurt to be sitting around all day waiting for me to get better if I was in the position as your mother Blaine, I'm sure she understands how hard it is for you to be sociable without feeling guilty about it, and from what I've heard from Kurt you're doing a terrific job taking care of her,"
"I just want her to be okay, and I just want you to know I'll never hurt Kurt. I can't lose him." Blaine's eyes watered. Burt could see Blaine looked like he was about to have a breaking point.
"I know," Burt sighed. "Come here," He argued pulling Blaine in for a hug.
"You're a good kid Blaine. I trust you to look after Kurt,"
Burt told. Blaine let out a sniffle as Burt held him.
Kurt saw them hugging and Blaine locked eyes with Kurt who got out of the car.
"Are you okay?" He asked Blaine worriedly when Burt let him go and seeing the tearful hazel eyes look back at him but Blaine just nodded and hugged him as well.
"Now what's this Zumba thing you've two been doing?" Burt demanded. Blaine grinned at him as he put an arm around Kurt "You want me to show you?" Kurt's eyes widened. "I don't think that's a good idea Blaine dad can't handle that type of exercise…"
"Nonsense, I'm as fit as a horse" Burt rolled his eyes as he told them to get inside before they caught a cold.
…..
Blaine turned on the TV and connected Kurt's USB which he had downloaded a video from youtube onto.
"So how does this thing work?" Burt asked.
"You just do what they're doing," Blaine told as him Burt and Kurt lined up. Kurt had insisted on changing into appropriate clothing and Blaine couldn't stop staring at him.
He was wearing his god damn cheerios outfit.
Blaine clicked over with the remote to the Zumba Beginners class and put the remote back down. Burt didn't do anything until both Blaine and Kurt were watching the screen and following the girls actions. Burt joined in eventually with Ricky Martin's first song La Copa De La Vida.
Blaine had made them bring in water so they could stop in between the music.
After the first song Burt made a sound of defeat. "I'm beat, see Kurt told ya I was fine,"
Kurt shook his head and Blaine could see he was trying not to laugh.
"Dad, that was only the first song,"
"You mean you gotta do them all?"
"Not if it's too much Mr Hummel," Blaine interrupted.
"Why do you think our classes are an hour and a half?" Kurt giggled.
"You've got to be kidding right... you do that crap just to lose weight? What's wrong with having a stomach anyway?"
"Dad! That's Blaine's job you're talking about,"
"No offense Blaine, you do it great I'm sure." Burt added directing Blaine with a bit of sympathy.
Blaine laughed having stopped the USB from playing more.
"None taken Burt," He said as Burt told him to call him that all the time.
"Well come on then, let's burn some calories, then I can have a beer,"
"Dad…."
"Yes Kurt…"
"No beer." He said sternly.
"What if Blaine joins me?"
Kurt didn't look happy "I'm sure Blaine doesn't want one either," so Blaine sufficed "Come on Kurt, let him have one,"
"I like this kid," Burt grinned.
