Gaara closed the door behind him as Kankuro started to set the plates on the table.
The siblings had a decent sized house. The kitchen had very few plates and utensils as they rarely have anyone around.
"Welcome back!" The older male greeted his younger brother. "Mac and cheese for dinner."
"I expected nothing more because you're the one in charge tonight." Was Gaara's fond reply accompanied by a smirk.
"Hey it's not instant mac and cheese for once!" Kankuro chuckled. "I actually tried 'ya know!"
"Oh, I'm hungry!" Temari's joins her brothers and takes her usual seat. It was eight in the evening. Kankuro follows suit after he put away the emptied casserole.
"I'm back, Temari." Gaara said with a small smile. He pulled his seat beside her but his smile was immediately followed by a frown. "Temari…"
He didn't know how to point it out properly. Gaara isn't the best with words. He didn't want to ruin the mood but his concern is obviously present. Thankfully, Kankuro was there to point out the obvious.
"You've been crying." He declared as he rolled his eyes. Kankuro knew Temari by heart. That is no secret.
Temari looked horrible to say the least. Her eyes were red as if she had been drinking hard liquor for hours. Her hair not exactly looking as glorious as she always keeps it. And her face looks like a tomato.
"I'm fine." She brushes it off even though she is anything but fine. Gaara looks at his brother, trying to communicate his concern.
Kankuro nods and swallows a spoonful of mac and cheese before speaking. "Look, you're fooling nobody here." He continues. "Gaara and I are worried."
Temari looks at Kankuro and Gaara with a little more strength. Gaara attempts to smile encouragingly while Kankuro quietly eats his food.
"He was here this afternoon." Temari spoke mustering all strength to open up to her brothers. It used to be the most comfortable thing in the world before. But she did not want to remember. She did not want to acknowledge what happened.
"He was what?!" Kankuro immediately fires up. "What happened? Did you kick his ass or what?!"
Temari takes a deep breath before saying anything. "He came to explain and apologize."
It was Gaara's turn to say something. "And what was his explanation?"
"He…" Temari hesitated a bit before continuing. Her own mouth couldn't form the words without remorse. It was a horrible truth she cannot escape. "He cheated on me."
Kankuro stands up almost instantaneously. "I knew it." He cut her before she could continue. "That bastard!"
Temari looks away and elaborates. "He said… He said he couldn't take the distance."
Gaara frowns and finally says something from his seat. "Distance is not a hindrance if the feelings you have for one another are genuine." The young kazekage said. "That's one more thing I've learned from Uzumaki Naruto."
"He..." Temari kept explaining, paying no heed to her brother's reactions. "He said he's sorry and now he realizes how much he does love me."
"Oh my god, Temari!" Kankuro's voice was getting louder and louder.
"Calm down, Kankuro." Gaara calls him out. "Temari, we..."
Now it was Gaara's turn to be hesitant. He takes a deep breath and tries again. "We care for you and we want you to be happy."
Temari smiles for the first time in a while.
"Whatever it is... that has happened... I hope you find your happiness." Gaara smiles back.
Kankuro, finally calming down, takes his seat again and crosses his arm. "We're here for you sis. We're happy when you're happy." He shoves another spoonful of mac and cheese in his mouth. "And I know you love him so whatever. Do what makes you happy!" He continues even with a mouthful of food.
Fighting back her tears, the eldest of the three began to eat her mac and cheese. "Not bad." She announces.
"Of course it's edible! I cooked it!" Kankuro boasts as he eyes Gaara who was seated to his left.
The youngest frowns as his invisible eyebrows meet. He clears his throat and replies: "Well, I'll make dinner tomorrow then."
"Oh god." Was Kankuro's quick reply in horror.
Temari looked at his two younger brothers. This was everything to her. Being able to sit down to dinner with them even when she's going through the darkest times of her life, it means everything to her. The assurance that they would be right behind her if she were to fall back, the warmth of their presence. It made her appreciate every sunrise and move on from every tear that has trickled down her cheek. Temari is no longer afraid. And with renewed strength, she decides to confront tomorrow, stronger than ever.
Thank you, Kankuro, Gaara. Thank you. She whispers as she giggles while her brothers continue teasing each other.
I felt like this chapter sucked. I'm sorry. Idk I don't feel so good about my writing recently.
Hope you enjoyed!
