My Path

[Grey Manor]

[Nate POV]

I sat down at couch opposite to my grandfather.

"So, have you read the books?"

"Yes."

"What is your opinion about what you read?"

"Humans like to cause more destruction than creation as a species."

"While that is correct, it is not supposed to be what you take away from these books. I wanted to ask what kind of magic is that you are interested in?"

"I assumed you would teach all the disciplines of magic."

"No, Magic is like an art, everybody does it different and at the end of the day some are good at singing and some at dancing but does it make the former inherently better than the other? No, What I will be teaching you is what you will be good at. At least the basics of it will be taught by me and after that is done then I will provide you any ingredient, book and tutor you require. The things I will provide you will be resources I should provide you with and personally I will only teach you about magical law, assets we hold and what it means to be a Grey. A member of my family."

I gulped at that, this old man can get intense in moments.

"So what will we be starting with?"

"Follow me."

We went into the basement where he took out a black box and then moved to the grounds.

Then he took out a wand from the box.

"Take it and be sure to point away from myself and yourself."

"Okay."

I took the wand and immediately felt lukewarm and pointed it in front of me.

Then he gave me a sheet of paper.

"Try to perform the spell on the first page."

I tried, it was the lumos charm but instead of white light, green light should come out.

"Lumos"

There was a small green light at tip of the wand.

"Try the next one"

And I did, for half an hour, I had performed over thirty spells all with different amounts of success.

"So what branches of magic do you want to study?"

"Charms,Runes,Elemental Magic, Illusionary Arts, Mind Arts, Spell Creation and a bit of wandless magic."

"Hmmm…. You might have already guessed but this was a test to see what branches you would be good at and well you should have no problem in most of them but Spell creation would be a problem since arithmancy has no love for you."

"But is arithmancy not the use of numbers to predict a future."

"Yes and no, Arithmancy is the use of numbers to predict any outcome."

"So spells are created via trial and error?"

"Yes and without arithmancy it will be like shooting an arrow in the dark. But here the spell could go catastrophically wrong and kill the caster so I would recommend trying to make your spells when you are older because even with Arithmancy things have gone wrong for people."

"Okay, now about other things that I think are important, in the magical theory book it said about Wizard's strength, how do I incre-"

"-ase it? For power it would be using a levitation charm and increasing the mass of the object being levitated over time, For control use a levitation charm to make an object levitate just above the ground and increase the number of objects over an area and for field increase the distance of levitated object from yourself and over time increase the distance and speed at which it is moving away and finally increase the number of objects.Do these exercises individually and don't bunch them up together just because it will help all of them oh and yes do it wandlessly."

"Why individually?"

"Because all people have different heights they can push each individual aspect of strength."

"So now lets talk all the things I would like to do and all the plans I have."

"Why not, let us indulge ourselves. But remember that it does not mean I will be able to grant all your requests."

"I would like you to start gathering books on the topics we have previously concluded I am good at or am supposed to be good at."

"Only if you first finish the books I give you today."

"Titles please?"

"Hiding and Horrors of magic."

"Those do not sound ominous at all."

" Hiding is an introductory book to the mind arts, it describes how occlumency protects one's mind."

"When I finish it, I want a book on legilimency."

"We will see about that once you have finished this and are suitable enough to protect your mind and organize your thoughts."

"What about the second one?"

"It is a descriptive book about things that are dangerous and the horrors magic can cause."

"Makes sense that you would give a book that would caution instead of one that makes one to like the wonder of magic."

"You read those physics books,no? Have you seen how muggles found how small you are compared to the stars, does it take away from there wonder? The beauty of stars is how bright they are but it does not mean that they will not burn you if you try to grab them. Their massiveness and their shine is what makes them so beautiful yet that it is also what makes them so dangerous because there is heat in that shine and fools who forget it get burned."

"OK! No need to start a bloody philosophy lesson!"

"Ah yes! Before you make another request, you have a task."

"What task?"

"I will be asking Veronica to start your etiquette lessons and also you will be playing chess with me everyday now after having political and wizengamot lessons."

"Chess? Seriously! I am seven and it is a stupid game!"

"Boy! I have heard enough of you talking and I am giving you chess because it is popular and I want someone to play with me in this blasted house! Most of the people here have to play that barbaric sport Quidditch and when I thought your father was a sensible one, he likes football. You will play the game like your legacy depends on it or I will run you ragged in the name of chores."

"Yes Grandfather" I chorused.

'Wait you old goat I will get you for thi-'

*smack*

*A slap to the head later*

"You have heard of legilimency and yet you broadcast what you are thinking."inquired a smug William Grey.

"You used legilimency on me?"

Now this had me pissed because that was a clear violation of my privacy.

"Yes I did, to show you how dangerous legilimency is. And you will be playing chess while trying to protect your thoughts from me. What are you going to do, go to the DMLE? "

"I will tell Grandma Veronica, you used legilimency on me" I sniffled. This changed his gears quite quickly.

"Okay I will never use anything other than surface level legilimency on you , that too only during chess. So stop blackmailing me and state what you want next?"

"I wanted an information broker."

"Now that is something I did not think you have any need of."

"It is just a useful contact to have."

"Yes, yes it is, information is gold after all. But also coordinate any information you have bought to me so it does not get bought twice by mistake."

"Yes Grandfather." I know this is also to keep an eye on me but I was fine with it.

"Finally I want 125 galleons in hard cash each month."

"That is 1500 galleons a year. Your trust vault is 25000 galleons till you reach 17 year old. So are you asking for additional funds?"

"No I was hoping for an early access to my vault only, no additional funds."

"And why will you need access to funds so early."

"It is a precautionary measure. As you stated earlier, caution is important, no?"

"Just don't waste your money. Anything else?"

"Off you go then."

I left with the two books.

[William Grey's POV]

Nate Grey was a special child that much I knew but today with that legilimency probe I understood that he was terrifying. His mannerisms while rude were eerily similar to that of a young adult rather than a child. He was growing too fast while this would be a great thing, the boy's rebellious nature could be problematic since arrogance could lead to stagnation thus I had humbled the boy by the use of legilimency. The boy's arrogance and hubris is the only thing that would need to be curbed but with a clear goal in mind, the boy would surely lead a path to greatness all on his own.
