The Crimes Of The Last Of Lestrange

[TPP]

The day after Nate's first chess game in which he got his arse handed to himself on a plate. Nate and William were sitting around the table in William's stuudy and discussing the next books William would be giving to Nate.

"What were they called again?"

" Basic Rune Theory and Illusions & Nightmares."

"I would assume later is illusion magic while the former rune magic?"

"You won't be carving runes any time soon, thus only Ancient Runic Language and not Runic Magic rude-boy. You have two more books to go through before you carve any runes- "

But William was interrupted by an owl.

When William checked the letter,he recognised the seal to be from the Wizengamot Chamber.

"Ok! Finish these-memorize them, practise occlumency and try to perform the wandless strength exercises I told you. And while going, please call in your father up here."

"Yes sir."

"I am a Lord by title. The correct form of address would be 'Yes, My Lord.'" quipped William with a smirk.

"Yes, M'Lord."

Nate left the room and went down to the room that was adjacent to his father's workshop.

"Dad?"

Nate knocked on the door

"Yeah! Come in."

Nate peeked into the room and simply stated "Grandfather called you into his study and I am going to study the things Grandfather asked me to."

[Nate's POV]

I entered into the room which I moved into at the age of 4 years old. I got it redisgned with the help of Mum and Dad. I got dad to expand the room's size since he was good at expansion charms and got mum to transfigure my study desk to a larger size. The walls were coloured a deep blue while the ceiling had a white color.Opposite to the study desk, sat a single bed. The walls free of the desk and bed were lined with bookshelves on one wall while the other had a white board and a closet extending into a bathroom so that I could change after bathing without wetting the bloody wooden floor.

I sat the books I got from Grandpa on the study desk and turned on the lights. I opened the copy of Basic Rune Theory and started studying it.

According to the author Felix Happ, Runic magic is the act of invoking magic through the use of language. Now most people would think, is that not the same as spell incantations but they are not the same since spell incantations are intent enhancers while runes are intent inheritors. Incantations enhance intent while runes recreate intent. Incantations are there to help a caster while runes are independent of a caster's capabilities if they get the intent of the rune while carving it right. Incantations are divided into modern and medieval incantations. The former makes use of Latin while the later makes use of armaic or proto-english.

Runes on the other hand have been one of the oldest methods for casting magic. They are divided into three types: Ancient Runes, Medieval Runes and Modern Runes.

Now here is where things get interesting because there is no change in strength of spell cast with change in language for spell incantations but runes get affected for some unknown reason, older runes are stronger in comparison to newer ones.

Thus English can't be truly used as a runic language as it is too weak in its effects. But it gets weirder because the language cannot be too old. Tamil for example is the oldest written language. But it does not work as runes which leads to an assumption that there is an expiration date or expiration event to a runic script since we have evidence suggesting that Greek and Tamil were both common runic script a thousand years earlier. In modern time, the most popular runes are Gaelic or Germanic origin. Elder Furthark is one of the most popular one followed by Celtic Runes.

After that the author, gave a list of things Runes could achieve and how they are the most underrated pieces of magic. Followed by how a novice should never play around with something like runes without expert supervision. And finally the author wrote about Elder Furthark and each of its letters and instructs how to practice writing without them burning the parchment due to it having intent and then being able to burn the parchment with intent on command since that is the basics of Rune Carving.

Illusions & Nightmares could be considered one of the most vividly descriptive book I have read, though the number I have read is quite small at 9 books, one of which was The Tale Of Beedle The Bard. The author's name was Quinn West, he described that illusions are all about how much time you are willing to put in a particular illusion itself and how a true master of the illusionary arts could make his illusions seem so real that they could trick any being into believing them. They could imitate sight, sound, touch, temperature and even smell and taste of any real object. He also described performing illusions was quite easy, the only spell illusionists use is Illusio . That one spell is all you need to make illusions. The author also stated as a matter of fact that Merlin was a master of illusions. And many of the feats, like having a pet dragon for one was by the use of illusions. The author also stated quite passionately that in combat a competent illusionist could fight dozens of wizards and win just like a transfiguration master but without spending as much magic. The only weaknesses that illusion magic truly has is its inability to recreate emotions and intent which can be sensed by many magical creatures and a legilimence that is searching for emotions will be able to know that an illusion is not real due to its lack of emotions. Inanimate illusions and spell covering illusions still are fair game.

The author then instructs the user the path which they must walk to master illusions. Mastering the visual and sonic illusions is the most important. Followed by touch and pressure as they are quite inter linked with each other. Then temperature is quite difficult and finally illusionary mastery is achieved after doing smell and taste. The correct way to make Illusions is to think what you want to achieve and cast Illusio from your wand. After that it is all about calibrating your illusions to make them feel as real as possible. While standard mastery can be achived after you can make all the basic senses believe an illusion is real, true mastery and expertise is proven by animated illusions and true goal of modern illusionary arts is the ability to replicate emotions. It is akin to what the Philosopher's stone is to Modern Alchemists. The author then points out that there have been no true seekers of the goal since emotions are linked to the soul. And most magical communities especially european and american ones really frown upon soul magic if it is already not illegal.

Now these books while very short were quite important because I want to pick up pieces of magic that are not actively used for combat and apply them into combat. Because most expirienced duelers have surprising spells up their sleeves but the problem with most of these spells is that they are either a charm, a transfiguration spell or a dark arts spell. And this leads to most of these spells being anticipated by the opponent anyway. Thus I am going to use branches of magic that are almost never used in combat and copy people who have already done this like Illusionary arts, Runic Magic, Enchantment Charms, Elemental Magic and Legilimency. Most of these branches of magic are not combat oriented.

Most people would think Elemental magic is combat oriented, no? Most elemental magic is used for massive projects like the Pyramids of Giza, Azkaban supposedly, Nurmengard, Atlantis, etc. The only elements used in combat are fire and lightning. Transfiguration is preferred over the earth element, simply because elemental spells cause massive drain which is not something you want during combat. Water is not used because you need to be around a body of water and most wizards simply use more modern and precise charms to solve the problem. You can breathe underwater if you are competent in water elemental spell but a bubblehead charm is more precise, energy efficient and easier. A master of an element could bend that element to their will to extreme limits but most people don't use such magic because it is energy draining, imprecise and the statue of secrecy does not permit for most such magic because it could expose the magical world.

Legilimency is not used because it can cause irreversible damage to the mind of the victim and also you have to look into the eye of the opponent and focus on one person thus it leaves you vulnerable to flanking transfigurations.

Runes are not used in combat because most people don't have the time to carve them on the ground during fights. Most of the times they are used is during ambushes.

Enchantments are not used, simply because an enchantment works only if the conditions for it are fulfilled. Ath nGabla is an enchantment that uses three runes and a spell to force a death curse upon anyone who sees the user to fight one-on-one or die. It was used by the Cu Chulainn to hold back an army.

Illusionary magic was best utilized by Merlin and Merlin copycats to an amazing degree. Yet most people don't use it due to it being seen as a trick more than anything else. Illusions can be used to hide spells, people, other transfigurations and used to fake spells.
