Disclaimer: I don't own the song or CSI.
I've always been moved by this song and I got sudden inspiation as I listened to it today. You should really listen to the song while you read, it makes the story that much more moving(bad english, I know).
Concrete Angel by Martina McBride
Sara Sidle has just finished with a crime scene when she hears a whimper. She takes out her gun and walks towards the noise with Greg and Nick following. The team hears the noise coming from the daughter's room. Sara opens up the closet to find a girl no older than 10. The girl looks at her and sighs before letting go. Sara immediately starts CPR, but she can't save the girl. As she closes the girl's eyes, she sees bruises covering her body. The girl is in a frilly, blue dress with long sleeves that goes to her ankles. The girl is gone and Sara's heart breaks for the child who looks so much like herself as a child, in every aspect including the bruises and haunted look.
She walks to school with the lunch she packed
Nobody knows what she's holdin' back
Wearin' the same dress she wore yesterday
she hides the bruises with the linen and lace oh
The teacher wonders but she doesn't ask
It's hard to see the pain behind the mask
Bearing the burden of a secret storm
Sometimes she wishes she was never born
[chorus]
Through the wind and the rain
She stands hard as a stone
In a world that she can't rise above
But her dreams give her wings
And she flies to a place where she's loved
Concrete angel
Somebody cries in the middle of the night
The neighbors hear, but they turn out the lights
A fragile soul caught in the hands of fate
When morning comes it'll be too late
[chorus]
through the wind and the rain
she stands hard as a stone
in a world that she cant rise above
but her dreams give her wings
and she flies to a place where she's loved
concrete angel
A statue stands in a shaded place
An angel girl with an upturned face
A name is written on a polished rock
A broken heart that the world forgot
through the wind and the rain
she stands hard as a stone
in a world that she cant rise above
but her dreams give her wings
and she flies to a place where she's loved

"The father had been beating the mother and daughter for years and got away with it. The life of the family ended after the father beat the girl to near death before killing the mother and himself. The daughter then passed away in the arms of one of my CSIs, Sara Sidle. The evidence and statements from neighbors and teachers proves this. That's all I will say." Gil Grissom said to the reporters as he left the crime scene for the last time.
