They just stared.
*Twitch*.
"What in dear God's name did you just call me Sai-kun?" Sakura managed to get out between gritted teeth.
"I said 'ugly bitch', Sakura. Do you have hearing problems?" A fake smile.
Did he have a death wish?!
Sakura's face dropped and a shadow covered her eyes, "Do you honestly think I am that ugly, Sai? I mean, sheesh, you really do know how to hit a girl when she's down." Was that a tear streaming down her face?
"Hmm, well, not really."
Sakura's head snapped up. What…?
"W-what do you m-mean?"
"Well, remember those books you discovered I was reading in the library?" A nod of confirmation, "It said, 'Usually people do not like to hear what you really think of them. Between close friends, it is often customary to give a nickname that is opposite to your opinion.'"
A pause. A slight shift in the air.
No freaking way…close friends? Not what you really think of them...?
"So you think I'm…pretty?"
"Beautiful, actually." Another smile, but something about his eyes betrayed the falsity in the curve of his smile.
"And that we're close friends?"
"I certainly hope so." Sai turned his body to Sakura and stared intently into her eyes.
"Well I honestly don't know what to say." Wow, she sounded like she was have some kind of cardiac arrest.
Wait then that meant…
"So you think Ino is…?"
"A slut who really needs to get laid." And so the spell broke.
Well. This was an interesting conversation.
As they sat watching the sunset, they didn't even notice Naruto left them a long time ago. No people were scurrying any longer and only a pair of pigeons flitted and intertwined together in the breeze.
They didn't even notice how their hands found each others or for the fact that Sakura's head dropped onto his shoulder.
Yet, something that was quite noticeable was the blush on their faces as their lips met in a soft kiss.
Owari.
