UNDERWORLD Chapter 2- Thor
A tribute to the new game, Tomb Raider Underworld, I thought I'd bring back another 'Raider' fan fiction! Dedicated to my two best friends, Umesh and Leonni, hope you like it! J
"…I do wish Alister were there. He'd have loved this view." Lara said into her headset. Zip laughed on the other end.
"Pity he's on holiday!" he answered.
Lara looked out from her position in the rocky valley, to the ruined opposite. Beautiful ancient walls, ivy creeping over the time-wrought history, exquisite and elaborate markings, sculptures and scriptures decorating the entrance.
"She's gorgeous." Lara murmured, breathless. She took out her binoculars and checked for the usual infestation of mercenaries. Often, wealthy curators and collectors would pay a lot for these vermin to do the dirty work- entering the tombs for priceless treasures they sought, totally ignorant to the history. Lara Croft preferred the hands-on approach.
"No-one, Lara?" he asked, surprised. "Nobody at all?"
Lara carefully looked for any signs of life. To be sure, she clicked the safety off of one of her pistols by her side. She crept to the edge of the rock and dropped to the ground below silently. Not even a whisper of air touched her. The creeping, ominous silence unnerved her slightly. Zip was quiet on the headset.
She stepped into the tomb quietly, on the balls of her feet, balancing her weight, in case of sudden attack. To reassure herself that she was still alive, she slid out her pistols, holding them upwards, ready to shoot at any sound. She came up against no traps, not even a single boulder. Reaching a gold-plated door with no guards, nothing but an inscription of thunderclouds, Lara swiftly swept inside- and her mouth fell open.
A massive marble statue of a armour-clad man, his eyes wild, his beard bushy, stood over her, wielding a great hammer. The might and power of this man struck Lara suddenly, making her feel very humble.
"Thor, god of thunder." she whispered, her voice very small and insignificant in the midst of the statue. She averted her eyes to the rest of the tomb.
Towering pillars reached up alongside the statue, and there were numerous symbols carved deep into them and the marble walls. A gold platform was in the middle of the room, raised high, with a silver coffin-shaped box. Around the platform was a series of smaller statues, guardians of legend, surrounding the place of rest. But what intrigued Lara was the floor.
There was the symbol she'd seen on Excalibur, back in Bolivia, and on the dais. She was right! The legend of King Arthur was connected! And now, to find the Hammer of Thor…
