Tide Pod Challenge
"Are you sure you want me to go?" Tony Stark asked, peeling his gaze away from the small figure on the bed to look at May Parker.
May nodded, her lips a thin line and there was an angry spark in her eyes. "I'm too angry and I don't want to leave him."
Tony understood perfectly. Anger was simmering under his skin and racing through his veins. It was taking everything in his will power not to let it overcome him. He nodded, standing to his feet. "Okay. I'll be back as soon as it's over."
May nodded, reaching out to take Tony's hand. She gave it a soft squeeze, giving him a thankful smile. "Thank you."
"Anything for my favourite Parker's," Tony said, giving her a smile.
"Try not to kill anyone," May said, giving him a wry smile. "No matter how much you will want to."
Tony huffed. "You take the fun out of everything, May."
She laughed, shaking her head, and dropping his hand.
Tony shifted closer to the edge of the bed, eyes flickering over the sleeping form of Peter Parker. He leaned down, pressing a quick kiss to Peter's forehead. "Be back soon, Underoos."
Peter stirred at the touch but didn't wake.
"If you need anything, Bruce and Stephen are just a shout away," Tony said. "They'll be back in ten to check on him anyway."
"I know." May gave him a small smile. "Go. I've got him."
Tony nodded and he forced himself to walk out of the med bay and away from Peter Parker. It was one of the hardest things he had to do but he had to if he was going to get to the bottom of what had happened.
It had been Tuesday afternoon when Tony had gotten the call from May that Peter had been rushed to the hospital. When Tony had arrived at Queens Memorial, May was already there, her eyes damp and her breath shaky.
Poisoned, she had told him. Something he had eaten at school. The doctors were in the process of pumping his stomach to get it all out and to see what the damage was. As soon as Peter had been stable, Tony had him transferred to the med bay where Bruce, Stephen and Stephen's good friend Christine Palmer had taken over Peter's care. It had been touch-and-go, Peter requiring a small surgery. It was only that Peter was stable now that Tony could force himself to leave his kids' side.
It didn't take Tony long to reach Midtown Highschool of Science and Technology, parking his car and stepping out. When he reached the reception, Principal Morita was there waiting for him, his expression stoic.
"Mr. Stark. Thank you for coming," Morita said, taking Tonys hand and shaking it. "Will Mrs. Parker be joining us?"
"No, she didn't want to leave Peter," Tony said, not voicing his own unwillingness to leave the kid either.
Morita nodded. "Understandable. Please, follow me."
Tony followed Morita into his office, his gaze sweeping around the room. The office was a little cramped with the amount of people already in the room and so Tony stood against the wall; arms crossed over his chest; his expression carefully blank. He ignored the surprise looks from the others in the room, focusing on keeping his anger at bay.
Principal Morita moved around to his desk, choosing to stand behind it and he gazed at the Academic Decathlon Team before him. "I'll get right to the point. What were you thinking?" Principal Morita demanded.
From his perch on the wall in the principal's office, Tony was wondering the same damn thing.
The gathered group of teenagers shifted from foot to foot, but no one spoke up.
"Well?" Principal Morita prompted, arching a brow at his students. "One of you had better started talking."
"It's the Tide Pod Challenge," MJ, Tony recognised, spoke up. Her face was carefully blank, her tone almost sounding bored. As Tony peered at her closer though he could see the worry that sparked behind her eyes and the way her hands were twisting together in front of her.
Tony really hoped that the challenge wasn't as dumb as he thought it would be. But as he eyed the group of teenagers, watching them look at their shoes with guilty expressions, he hopes were dashed.
"And what exactly is the challenge?" Principal Morita asked, his tone low.
"To see who can eat the most tide pods," MJ explained. She stayed perfectly still. "It's a meme."
"And you were dumb enough to try it?" Principal Morita squawked, looking between them all.
The teenagers flinched.
Tony's jaw clenched, his teeth grinding together. All this pain, this worry, was over a stupid internet challenge?
"It was supposed to be a bit of fun," a blonde girl spoke up, her eyes wet with tears. "Peter wasn't… he wasn't supposed to start vomiting blood!"
Tony sniffed, trying to banish the image of seeing Peter lying still on the hospital bed, blood stains around his mouth, down his chin and down the front of him.
"What did you think would happen when you challenged him to eat poison, Betty?" Principal Morita asked.
Betty whimpered.
"Is Peter going to be okay?" Ned asked, his voice wavering as he looked at Tony.
The rest of the teenagers looked at Tony too, as did their parents who were also attending the meeting. Tony shifted against the wall, levelling them all with a look.
"Peter had to his stomach pumped and a surgery to repair a tear in his stomach," Tony told them, his voice steady. "But he will make a full recovery."
The teenager's pale faces morphed into relief, the tension in their bodies easing slightly.
"We're sorry," Flash blurted out, Tony recognising the kid in an instant. "We never wanted him to get sick.
"You had to have known that eating Tide Pods would not taste or feel good," Principal Morita frowned.
"We didn't think he would get that sick," Abe corrected. "Just, I throw up, maybe?"
Principal Morita took a deep breath. "All of all you will be writing a formal apology to Peter, and you will all be suspended for the rest of the week."
The teenagers were silent as the accepted their punishment.
"What you did was not only reckless but extremely dangerous," Principal Morita continued, giving them each a disappointed look. "I expected better of you all."
There were mumbled apologies and a few sniffs of barely concealed tears.
"You will be emailed your assignments for the rest of the week by this afternoon," Principal explained. He turned to the parents. "These assignments are to be completed before they return to school on Monday."
The parents nodded, glancing at their kids with varying degrees of disappointment.
"That's all, you are dismissed," Principal Morita said, finally sitting down at his desk.
The parents moved at once, collecting their child and moving to the door until only Ned and MJ remained with their parents.
"Is Peter really going to be okay?" MJ asked.
"With a bit of rest," Tony said. "When's he's awake, I'll let you know. I'm sure he will appreciate your visits."
"Thank you, Mr. Stark," Ned said, giving him a shaky smile.
Then they were ushered out until it was just Tony remaining in the office.
"Mr. Stark," Principal Morita said. "Please, pass on my offer to Mrs. Parker that if she needs anything to just ask. Peter is a remarkable student here and we do hope he has a speedy recovery."
Thanks to Peter's powers he would but Tony wasn't going to share that. "I'll pass it along. Thank you, for your time. I'll keep you updated on his recovery."
"Thank you," Morita nodded. "I hope that we hear good news soon."
"If you will excuse me, I would like to get back to Peter now," Tony said. He shook hands with Morita and then hurried out of the office, eager to get back to his kid.
Peter woke up feeling groggy. His body felt heavy, as if his limbs were tied down on the bed. He forced his eyes open, blinking at the harsh light. He made a noise, squeezing his eyes closed again.
"Hey Underoos," Tony's soft voice floated over Peter. "Can you open your eyes again, kiddo?"
"S'bright," Peter slurred, twisting his head in the direction he thought Tony was.
There was movement and then Tony's spoke again. "Okay, should be dimmer for you."
Peter squinted his eyes open and was relieved to find that it wasn't as bright. He blinked several times, humming as he saw Tony hovering above him. "Hey."
"Hey, kiddo. How are you feeling?" Tony asked, his hand coming up to smooth Peter's curls back from his face.
Peter thought about it. Tiredness clung to his body and there was a small ache in his stomach that flared when he shifted to get more comfortable. "A bit sore."
"Do you remember what happened?" Tony asked.
Peter thought about it and then flinched, pain flaring through his stomach. He peeked at Tony who was watching him with a carefully blank face.
"I'm sorry," Peter whispered.
Tony sighed. "Pete, why would you eat tide pods?"
Shame made Peter's cheeks flush. "I – it was a dare. It wasn't supposed to make me sick."
"You thought eating poison wouldn't make you sick?" Tony arched a brow.
Peter squirmed, hissing slightly as pain jolted through his stomach. "I thought my metabolism would stop it." Peter looked down at his sheets. "I forgot that my metabolism is fast. I thought my healing factor would stop it not –"
"Make you digest the poison faster," Tony finished for him. "Which is why you hurled blood so quickly." Tony sighed heavily. "Kid."
Peter sniffed. "I just…wanted to fit in."
"Eating tide pods in not the way to do that," Tony shook his head. "You could have died, Pete."
"I'm sorry," Peter sniffed.
Tony's hand ran through his curls again, Peter leaning into the touch. "I know you are kiddo. And when you are feeling better, we are going to have a chat about all of this. But right now, you need to rest. Your bodies been through the ringer."
Peter could already feel the tug of sleep again and he shifted to get more comfortable.
"May?" Peter asked around a yawn.
"Went to get something to eat," Tony said. "She'll be back soon. I'll wake you up again when she's back."
"K," Peter yawned again, eyes slipping shut. "M' sorry."
"I know," Tony voice sounded far away as Peter sunk into sleep. "Love you, kiddo. So much."
"Loveyouto," Peter mumbled before he succumbed to sleep once more.
Happy reading :D
NOTE: Please do not try this challenge at home. Tony Stark does not encourage reckless behavior (unless it's him then he's all for it). Don't be a dumbass like Peter.
