First Love Letter

Chapter 2 - The SLC: Sakura Lovers Club

Distant sounds began echoing as Sakura became more aware of her surroundings. Turning her head to the left, then to the right, everything was dark. Pitch black, actually.

Something tickled the bridge of her nose. That something was a cloth, and it apparently covered her eyes. Lifting a hand to itch the place the linen touched, Sakura noticed that they were tied. Rather tightly. What the heck was going on? Sakura pulled harder, trying to lift her arms. The rough rope that apparently restricted her arm movements scratched her skin, making them raw.

The sounds that were faraway just a minute ago became more distinct, more clearer, and soon turned into loud noise Sakura found annoying. Focusing all her mind on the noise, she made out voices cheering, high pitched squeals, and eager talking. She noticed that they all had one thing in common, a constant beat to all the noise. They chanted a certain name. A very familiar name. Sakura realized with dread that it was her name that was being yelled.

"Sakura-chan! Sakura-chan!" many voices screamed.

Memories of what happened earlier began to flood in. She remembered jogging to the girl's locker room to change out of her gym clothes. It was hot and all the running the class had done during gym made her sweaty and sticky. Instead of waiting for Tomoyo and the others, she ran on ahead, wanting a good shower before going home. When she turned the corner to go into the changing room, something hit her on the head. The last thing she saw was the ground. And a rather familiar face.

Sakura gasped as that face came into her view when the blindfold was suddenly taken off. The face disappeared behind bright lights that blinded her vision. As her eyes quickly adjusted to the room, she found that she was in the gym housing the basketball court and the stands were full of people making loud piercing cries, calling out her name. The tiny hairs at the back of her neck stood up as Sakura looked around the hysterical room. This was a rally.

"And now! The person you have all been waiting for!" someone to Sakura's left announced.

Louder screams accompanied after the announcement. Sakura knew she'd be deaf for a week if the yelling continued.

As the person kept speaking, she pointed a hand at Sakura. Squinting her eyes at the person, Sakura recalled a name. Hashimoto Yuki, president in charge of the SLC. Hashimoto held a small microphone and was talking to the crowd. The rest of the SLC council stood around Sakura, each smiling broadly. Fuchida Hideyasu, the vice president; Ihara Koutarou, the secretary; Endo Nozomi, the treasurer; Saitoh Midori, the senator; Minami Fusa, Otake Airi, Kuno Fuyumi, Watari Kabuto, and Yamane Chiyu, former friends of Sakura who had gone over to the dark side and became assistants in the club. Abe Hamano, the publicist, and Arai Akira, the photographer, were there too.

Sakura shook her head. She couldn't believe it. The whole gang was there. Sakura had been as careful as she could when choosing which school she was going to so that the club wouldn't find out, so that they couldn't follow. How did they know she was going to Souji High School? Unless, Tomoyo? She couldn't! But Sakura knew better. A glint in Tomoyo's eyes shimmered brightly when she had pointed out the club to Sakura earlier that morning. Sakura sighed.

"Whoever wins the competition will get a private date with our wonderful candidate, Kinomoto Sakura!" Hashimoto declared. The rest of the council came up next to her.

The words finally registered in Sakura's foggy mind. Looking at the president, Sakura stared in horror as the crowd roared.

"EHHHHH!!" she screamed, although it was drowned out by the crowd.

A soft chuckled from behind her right ear made her turn in her chair. Standing there was a handsome young man. He had thick messy hair, which on someone else would have looked ridiculous, but one him it was stylish. It was also chocolate brown. His strong cheekbones and sturdy jaw supported thick attractive lips and a straight nose. Under dark brows, beautiful amber eyes glinted shrewdly at her, making her shiver slightly. The color was so extraordinary, they seemed to pull her in.

He leaned closer to her until he was only a few inches away. He was tall and literally had to fold himself in half just to be eyelevel to Sakura. He smiled and it seemed to melt Sakura in her chair. His smile widened, knowing what it did.

"Need any help?" he asked. His voice was extremely alluring.

Sakura shook her head, more to clear it than answering his question.

"Oh?" he smirked. "Then I guess you want to sit here and become deaf?"

Taking one look around the room again, Sakura found that no one seemed to find him talking to her strange. Actually, no one seemed to notice that he was there at all, which was strange since he was gorgeous.

The crowd went wild at something the SLC council said. Sakura turned back toward the young man. She looked him over. His uniform was perfectly pressed, straight and smooth. His tie was flawlessly fastened around his neck, his shoes, shiny and new. All in all, he was neat and trimmed.

Lifting an eyebrow, Sakura looked him in the eye. "Still offering that help?"

"Sure, why not? Helping a damsel in distress is good." he shrugged.

Sakura laughed. "Damsel in distress?" She laughed again. She could get used to be calling a damsel, if only the SLC would just go away.

Something tugged at her ropes. Looking behind her, Sakura saw that his face was in a frown, concentrating on his task. A few more tugs and the ropes fell away. With her hands free, Sakura leaned down and began to untie her legs. The ropes were badly knotted, but in all the wrong places. Pulling it here and there, the knots gave way and the rope slid off.

"OI!"

Looking up, Sakura saw Fuchida Hideyasu watching her. As the rest of the crowd looked, everything seemed to quiet down. Silence followed as they tried to figure out what was going on.

"Gomen, but this young lady is mine!" the young man said. He leaned over Sakura and picked her up. With her in his arms, he ran. The crowd erupted and ran after them.

Once outside, the man stopped. "I'm sorry, but you're heavy. Can you stand?" he asked.

Sakura's cheeks flamed as she scrambled to the ground. "I didn't ask you to carry me. And why would I stand? I'm going to run!"

"Wha-" he was cut off as Sakura pulled him along.

Sakura pointed behind them. "That's why! If you don't want to get beat to a pulp, then run as fast as you can!"

Screams and yells followed closely behind them. Sakura ran into the school and looked around.

"This way." the young man called, tugging her uniform.

They ran in the directions of the lunchroom. As he took the lead, Sakura followed behind. He was fast, but she could have easily caught up, though if she did, she'd go in the wrong direction. They ran past empty classrooms and deserted hallways. As they dashed inside the cafeteria, Sakura tripped on one of the chairs. Landing face first on the floor, her breath poured out of her.

The man ran back to her. "Daijoubu desu ka?"

"Diajoubu." she muttered.

"Are you sure?" he questioned, helping her up into a sitting position.

Nodding, Sakura looked at him. Wrong move. They were so close, their lips almost touching.

Heat rushed through her cheeks, enflaming them. "A-Ano-"

He looked away and glazed at the doors of the lunchroom, undisturbed. His eyes narrowed as he said, "We'd better hurry. They're almost here."

Listening carefully, Sakura heard the thunder of shoes meeting linoleum. Glancing at him, Sakura nodded her agreement. With his gentlemanly manners helping her up, they took off again once she was on her feet. Running past the long counters and through the door into the kitchens, they flew by more tables and counters. Dashing around a corner, Sakura ran into her partner. Catching her, he slammed into the door, the impact causing it to open, and they landed onto the cement outside.

Sakura panted, still trying to catch her breath. The hold that had tightened around her fell away as she shook some sense back into her head. Sitting up, she began to rub her head.

"Can you get off me?" a gruff voice demanded.

Looking down, Sakura choked out a surprised, "EHH?!"

"I said get off!" he grunted again.

Clambering off of her rescuer, Sakura sat on the cement. Bowing her head in embarrassment, she laughed shakily. "Go-gomen nasai!"

A shadow fell over her. Taking a peek at the man, Sakura saw that he was standing, his back to her. Pushing herself up, she stood behind him.

"Now that you're done playing with those fools, you can give me a rematch."

Confused, Sakura continued to stare at his back. What had happened to the handsome young man who had been so charming before? She walked toward him. "What are you talking about? What are you-"

He turned and faced her, his eyes gleaming with anger that she hadn't seen there before. "I am Li Syaoran." he cut her question short.

"Li Syaoran?"

"Do you not remember the challenge I had issued to you when we fought at the kendo competition?"

Sakura shook her head. "I haven't entered a kendo competition since I was ten…" Her voice drifted off as a sudden memory forced itself into her brain. Her emerald eyes widen as she pointed at the Syaoran. "That was you?"

He nodded. "And I have come to take up that challenge I issued."

Sakura took a step back. Was this another enemy?
