First Love Letter
Chapter 4 - Guilt
Sakura blinked hard. When that didn't seem to take away the image of the handsome-prince-turned-enemy, she rubbed her eyes. Opening them, she had a momentary blindness that quickly adjusted. Syaoran was still in front of her.
"I will honor the challenge. Will you?" he demanded coldly.
Sakura groaned. Why was this happening to her? All she's ever wanted was to have a normal high school life. To join clubs, hang out with friends who weren't trying to kiss her, get a boyfriend like every normal girl. And forget about junior high. She never thought the past would come back to haunt her.
The sound of pounding feet and shouts drifted to their ears. Turning in the direction of the noise, they saw the group of students at the corner of the building.
A door in the kitchens banged loudly and more chaos ensued. The president of the SLC appeared a moment after the noise. Pointing in the direction of Sakura, she yelled loudly, "There they are!"
That caught the attention of both the students in the kitchen and the mob at the corner of the building. Sakura cast a quick glance at Syaoran and smiled.
"Gomen!" with that apology, she dashed off toward the gates of the school, leaving him behind to deal with the angry students so that she may escape.
As the chaos and noise of the students drowned away, Sakura stopped and took a glance back. The two mobs had now joined and were screaming at one another. A smile tickled her lips as she figured out that Syaoran must have escaped as well. Turning back toward the gates, she rushed past them. A long black limo sat patiently a few feet away. A burst of love exploded in her chest as she saw her best friend get out slowly from the extravagant car.
"Sakura! What was taking you so long?" she called over, leaning casually on the door.
Reaching Tomoyo, Sakura bent over and placed her hands on her knees, taking in deep breaths to calm her pounding heart. When her heart had finally slowed to a gentle thump thump, she straightened. Taking another quick look back, Sakura grabbed Tomoyo's arm and pushed her through the opened door when she saw no one.
"Get in, get in! Before they come!"
"Waaa!" she yelled out, landing on her back.
Sakura got in, not waiting for her to reposition herself. The car started to move while Tomoyo settled down properly on the grey leather seats.
"So what happened to you? You were all in a rush."
Sakura pouted. "I hate the SLC!"
Tomoyo let out a melodic laugh. When she was done, she patted Sakura on the head tenderheartedly. "It's okay."
"It's not okay!" Sakura said angrily, slamming her balled fists into the seats. "They're horrible people!"
"What did they do this time?" Tomoyo asked, letting out a low giggle.
"Are you laughing?"
When Tomoyo shook her head, Sakura sighed and began recounting what had happened. As she told the tale, she lost track of the time. She even lost her anger along the way thanks to Tomoyo's constant laughing, which was contagious. By the time she was done, she was refreshed and lighthearted. The driver announced them arriving at their destination a few minutes later.
Sakura nodded and glanced at Tomoyo. "Are you coming in?"
"Iie," Tomoyo shook her head in apology, casting a few glances at the rear-view mirror. "I've got an appointment with my mother and the company."
Sakura nodded and opened the car door. Taking a step outside, she paused.
"Sakura-chan?"
Sakura cast a look at Tomoyo and smiled. "Nothing. I'll see you at school tomorrow. Ja ne."
"Then, have fun!" Tomoyo said back happily.
Confused, Sakura waved goodbye. She watched as the limo rolled away. When it was finally out of sight, she sighed and went into the house.
"Tadaima!" she announced her presence.
"Okaerinasai!" two voices replied as her brother appeared in the doorway of the kitchen.
"Kaijuu must have been in a hurry to forget to change her school shoes." he replied, taking a quick assessment of her outfit.
"Hoe?" Sakura looked down at her feet and blushed. "Awww! I forgot to change!"
"Maaa, you can't do anything now."
Sakura groaned and dragged her feet upstairs. Changing out of her school uniform, she draped them over her study chair and spread out on her bed, looking up at the ceiling. She let out a bored sigh.
"Why do I never have anything to do when there is no cheerleading practice or no Tomoyo to accompany me?" she asked herself.
"Then you can come with me." a low voice said calmly.
Sakura jerked up into a sitting position and stared at her opened window. There sat her 'enemy', calmly lounging on her windowsill.
"Oshitake!!" Sakura screamed as she pointed a finger at him.
At the word, his surprise unbalanced him and he fell into her room. Scrambling quickly up onto his feet, he set his face into an angry expression. He pointed at her in turn and screamed, "What the hell did you say?"
"Oshitake!!" Sakura repeated, this time on her feet, copying his stance. "Teki!"
"You-"
A loud tap at her door stopped his sputter. "Sakura, what's going on? I thought I heard you scream 'stalker'. Is everything alright?"
Sakura let out a laugh. "I-I'm just playing around, Otou-san! Gomen!"
When her father was gone, Sakura faced Syaoran again. "What are you doing here? How did you know I live here?" she whispered.
He walked back to the window, shrugging, "I followed that limo you got into."
"You..." Sakura stopped and furrowed her brows. A gasp came out of her lips as she finally realized what Tomoyo had meant. "She knew!"
"Nani? Who knew what?"
Sakura shook her head, then sat on her bed. Turning to face him, she asked in irritation, "Why are you here?"
"I'm here to challenge you."
"Doushite? I've already beaten you once already, Shouteki."
"Nani?! What did you call me?"
Sakura stuck out her tongue at him. "Shouteki."
"You!" Syaoran stalked over to her. "I am not weak! You are just afraid to take up my challenge because you don't want to lose!"
Sighing, Sakura got up from her bed and dragged her feet over to the door. Placing a heavy hand on the handle, she paused. "I told you, I've already quit kendo."
"That doesn't matter!" Syaoran hissed, getting up from his perch. "This is a challenge and you must take it!"
Sakura shook her head. "You don't understand. I'll never do kendo again. No matter what."
With that said, she ran down the stairs. Slipping on her shoes quickly, she dashed out the door, continuing her run. When the burn in her lungs became unbearable only then did she stop.
The smell of the salt drifted to her nose as light sprays of water cooled her blazing skin. Looking around, Sakura spotted the ocean stretched out endlessly in front of her. Children ran around happily on the shiny white sand. Their high shrieks were filled with joy and fun.
Sakura took a few steps forward and sat on the cemented slope. Bringing her long legs up to her chest, she wrapped her arms tightly around them and rested her chin atop her knees. Painful memories threatened to reappear, bringing with them spurts of tears. Sakura suppressed a shudder. Her mind decided to work by itself and the recollection of the past came flooding in. A long streak of salted tears made a trail down each cheek.
"Get away from me! This is all your fault!"
Those words were more painful than anything. Sakura grabbed her head and gave it a hard jerk to clear her thoughts. Whipping away her stained cheeks, she sighed. She sat there, watching the setting sun. Families after families slowly gathered their things and went home. When the sun was half buried behind the orange water, she got up and stretched. Patting her legs to shake off the extra rubble, Sakura began her trek home.
