Author's Note:

Here it is, the second part of the grand festival. This has one of the big battles we've been building towards. Of course, it's the showdown between May and her ex, Drew. I know many people felt Drew was up to something during this adventure and how right you were. We'll get to see exactly what his plan was and how it played out. Harley was the fun sort of jerk with his over-the-top antics but now we'll see the proper sort of jerk. I felt like Amelia didn't live up to that in Johto, so I really wanted to double down on Drew here. Let me know how I did with his character; he might appear again but this was really the climax of his role of rival in Hoenn. Also let me know what you thought of his six Pokémon. The final two Pokémon are revealed here and while Plusle and Luvdisc were the only none-canon mons he got, I want to know if they fitted him properly. We also get the re-introduction of another character, it seemed like he should be here to support May in her first grand festival. Wonder how he'll handle his meeting with Drew. I've been asked a lot about Duskull and why he's not evolved yet. I'll just say he's got an upcoming arc in battle frontier, but we'll get a taste of it here. I am still open to nickname suggestions for Ralts. Finally, a guest reviewer asked me to update twice a week because I've got chapters pre-written but if I did that then I think I'd run out of prepared material before the end of Hoenn. It should be a once a week update from here until the end of Hoenn so don't worry though. Don't forget to vote in the poll and with that, let's begin!

Chapter Eighty-Three: Grand Festival - Top Four

May smiled as she sat on the wooden decking outside of the centre. Her friends were on the far side of the sectioned off area for the get together. Even Sakura joined them, celebrating her own victory and moving onto the next round. All her team were currently present, celebrating the victory over Harley.

Combusken was off on his own, practising his kicks into the air, as Munchlax snoozed away to his side without a care in the world. Beautifly, being the mother of her group, seemed to be orchestrating a game between the younger members like Mawile, Minun, Lileep and Bulbasaur, who were knocking a beach ball back and forth. Mightyena and Skitty were running back and forth, seemingly in some sort of game of tag. Huntail and Altaria were just off from the balcony, in and next to a small pond of water respectively. While her newly evolved Grumpig sat in front of her, munching away on his bowl of Pokémon food.

"You know, Grumpig, I'm really proud of you-" she muttered, lightly stroking the fur on his back. Spoink was always one of her more reliable team members, maybe not the strongest but always pushing himself to be better. She never imagined he'd evolve during that battle but- "you've grown up so much."

"Grum. Grumpig." He turned and pushed his head up to nuzzle against her. She couldn't help but giggle at the show of affection. It seems he still needs to get use to his arms since this is similar to how he acted as a Spoink. Although he certainly has a bigger apatite now, he's evolved.

"Hehehe," she chuckled, returning the gesture with a hug. "Okay, eat up. After all your hard work, it's all you can eat-" She noticed Munchlax shoot up into a sitting position at those particular words. "I'm just gonna get some air okay."

Standing up, she offered her team one more smile before turning and walking away a bit. It didn't take long for the familiar weight of her Minun scurrying up her body to rest on her shoulder. Offering the electric type, a soft smile, she continued until on the balcony of the centre, overlooking the sea-side front.

"You wanna talk?" She turned to see Serena following close behind. Moving to stand right beside, she leaned over the rail to stare out over the sea. Letting out a low breath, she copied and focused on the sparkling blue water. The imagine of Manaphy filled her vision for a brief second. "What'cha thinking?"

"Huh?" She turned to face the honey-blonde girl.

"Come on." She offered a smile. "I don't need to be a psychic to see you've got some stuff on mind. Is it your battle with Harley?"

"No-" She turned back to the ocean.

"Your battle with Drew tomorrow?" she asked. Unable to face her, she offered a small nod of her head. "You shouldn't get worked up like this."

"Easy for you to say," she muttered.

"I know it's not easy but if he's affecting you this much before the match then he's already won," she replied, "you know, he reminds me of one of my rivals back in Johto. Her name was Amelia, and she came from money... she thought everyone was beneath her. When she learnt Ash won the orange league, she even tried to take him. Not because she liked him but just because of the status of dating a winner."

"What happened?" she asked.

"I got lucky. One of my Pokémon noticed her stalking us trying to figure out my Pokémon for our match." She shrugged. "So, we tricked her, played it off we were going with another pair. That gave us the edge but we still had a tough fight on our hands, she made it to the top four for a reason."

"Just like Drew-" She sighed.

"And just like you." Serena placed a hand on her shoulder, being forced to turn, she faced the honey-blonde girl. "Your stronger and better then you realise and if you weren't you couldn't have made it this far. Even with all the help in the world, in the end you need to want it to truly succeed."

Feeling the corners of her lips flick up in a smile, she jumped forward and engulfed her friend in a hug. A warm fuzzy feeling tingled over her body as she returned the gesture. It only lasted a few moments, leaving her feeling a renew sense of energy buzz through her veins.

"Thanks, Serena-" She pulled back with a smirk. "And your right. Out of everyone in the top four, I'm the only one who defeated all the others before-"

"Slow down, May, I said you can win but not if you get overconfident-" She cut her off. "You're not facing everyone's track-records up there. Just because they lost once doesn't mean the result will be the same. If it was, I never could've defeated Solidad back in Johto."

"Solidad?" Her eyes widened.

"What's wrong?" she asked.

"That's the coordinator who trained Drew," she explained, "he told me about her during our time at Foretree. I never realised she was your opponent."

"Small world-" Her lips flicked up into a smile. "Guess this will be her chance for a rematch after last year. At least in spirit."

"You're not upset?" she asked.

"No reason to be, Solidad helped me a lot before our festival and she might've trained Drew but she shouldn't be held responsible for his actions-" she shrugged. "Same how neither myself or Ash would take responsibility for your actions. Like in Foretree."

"No need to remind me-" she sighed.

"There is... because those who forget history are doomed to repeat it," she replied, "now are we just gonna stand around here? I think you've still got to pick your pair for tomorrow's match, right?"

"Right... but I'd rather do it here-" she admitted. "It's easier than trying to pick with them all looking at me. It's like they all want a turn."

"It's because they do-" She smiled. "So, what're your thoughts?"

"Roselia is Drew's main partner. No way he'll leave her out of this match." She turned to ocean again. "So... I was thinking Beautifly, Combusken or Altaria would make a good start. They can pretty much cancel her out from the word go... Although Beautifly has the least battle experience."

"You sure about Roselia?" she asked.

"Positive, I really got to see how he thinks during-" She shivered at the thought of their time together. "Never mind. Anyway, then his second mon would more than likely be Plusle. Especially since Masquerain and Luvdisc took the appeals and his top eight match."

"You don't have a ground type-" She muttered.

"No... and both of my grass types are inexperienced in battle," she replied, "not to mention were in the appeals."

"If you know for sure he'll use Roselia and Plusle... then what does he know about you?" she asked.

"Well... most of my training with him was Altaria and Minun-" she replied. Stopping in her tracks, her eyes widened. "That's it!"

"What's it?" she asked.

"Combusken was going through his... stuff, back when we spent most of our time together-" she beamed. "He'll be the last one he'd expect me to bring, and I know just the partner to support him!"

"You're sure about this?" she asked.

"As sure as I can be..." she shrugged. "Unless you wanna, you know. Search his mind and tell me what he's planning."

"Sorry but I wouldn't even do that to my own opponents," she replied, "in competition, it wouldn't be fair and would make any victory hollow."

"Okay goodie two-shoes-" She puffed her cheeks before breaking out in a smile. "I'll just go and set them in then!"

Turning on heel, she bolted inside of the centre, heading to the computer lounge. Not only does this pairing make for a great counter to her ex's two favourite performers but also holds some thematic weight for her own journey from start to finish-

She stopped in her tracks as she stared ahead to the desk where Nurse Joy stood. A familiar white beanie sat on top of the head of the boy currently handing over a tray of Pokéballs. Her heart thumped harder against her chest as he turned, confirming her suspicions.

"Oh, hey May." Brendan smiled, walking over to her. "I erm... I came to cheer you on. Sorry for missing the opening, I was running an errand for my dad."

"I-it's alright." she let out a nervous chuckle. "But I erm. I need to do something. Registrar! I-I need to register my Pokémon for tomorrow."

"Right well-" He turned to the side and took a deep breath. "Good luck. Like I said, I'll be cheering you on."

Seeing him walk away towards one of the corridors which housed rooms for staying trainers, she felt a heatwave wash over her face. Letting her thoughts about the boy wonder on their own, she made her way to the computer lab. A small smile crept over her lips.

The next morning, she found herself stood at the bottom of the stairs which lead up to the field on the floating island. Taking a deep breath, she lightly ran her hand over the two Pokéball's on her belt. Glancing up, she caught sight of Vivian walking out onto the stage.

"Welcome ladies, gentlemen and Pokémon of all species to our top four battles of this year's Hoenn grand festival!" She announced, among the cheering crowd. "Our first battle today is between two students of top coordinators! Both of whom faced off in the final of last year's Johto's grand festival! The question is now, will history repeat itself? First from Petalburg city, we've got the daughter of a gym leader! Give it up for May Maple!"

Hearing the crowd erupt in applause, she closed her eyes. The soft scent of the ocean brought a soft smile to her face. Feeling the thump of her heart, she walked up onto the stage. Glancing at the crowd, she quickly located their friends. Forcing her attention forward, she walked into the trainers box.

"And her opponent!" Vivian announced. "A young man from a wealthy family! He's proved he's got style, class, and skill! From LaRousse city, it's Drew Shū!"

She bite her tongue and narrowed her eyes as she watched the green-haired boy walk out. Hearing his fans scream made her feel sick to her stomach. Just thinking of how she behaved from his slightest bit of attention made her want to just punch the smug prick.

"This will be a two-on-two double battle between these two coordinators with a five-minute time limit!" Vivian explained. "Both sides have already registrared their Pokémon and the winner will be the one to deplete their opponents points to zero first! So, let's see who'll be performing today!"

"Combusken and Munchlax!" She held her two Pokéballs out. "Take the stage!"

Two red beams shot out and her first Pokémon materialised in a fighting stance. Slowing moving his arms around, she couldn't help but notice the sharpened gleam of his claws. While her newest team member landed beside, scratching his belly with a dopey smile over his face.

"Aww, how sweet. I take it this is meant to signal the start and end of your journey?" Drew asked with a smirk. "Or let me guess. You thought I'd bring Roselia, who'd obviously struggle against your starter and... Plusle? Well, even Masquerain and Luvdisc would struggle to hurt that blob."

"Your stalling won't save you, Drew!" She called back.

"Who says I'm stalling?" He asked, producing two ultra-balls. "I will say, I was expecting Altaria... so you did surprise me, but it doesn't matter. Both of these Pokémon were prepped for this festival and this battle May. You'll get to face them in their contest debut so say hello to Absol and Flygon!"

The first Pokémon she noticed was one which she recognized from Serena's team but this dark type seemed slightly smaller. The long claws clutched into the floor as he bared his fangs. Rather than the cool, calm and collected expression she was used to. Swallowing hard, she took in the second opponent.

Drew's second Pokémon had a sort of insectoid body, whilst stood on two legs. A primarily light green colour covered the body, and they had a large pair of rhombus-shaped wings spread out. A red trim surrounded the outline. The feet were toeless while they had two skinny arms, each with three-claws on each hand. Their tail had several dark green stripes and three small green rhombus shapes with red trims at the end, just like the large wing, swaying back and forth behind. Looking towards the head, she saw the head had large eyes and a pair of green antennae that pointed back. The eyes have red covers, with a sort of goggles appearance. It extended up and let out a loud echoing cry. The eyes were locked down at her as she pulled out her Pokédex:

Flygon, The Mystic Pokémon. The final evolved form of Trapinch. The flapping of its wings sounds something like singing. Those lured by the sound are enveloped in a sandstorm, becoming Flygon's prey. They're known as the desert spirit due to this sound.

Putting her device away, she swallowed hard at the two opponents. Clearly, he raised a dragon of his own to counter Altaria and while Combusken might have an advantage against Absol, but they can also have a wide move pool... shaking her head, she tightened her fist and focused on the pending battle.

"The winner of this battle will be the side who puts on the best display within our five minute time limit!" Vivian announced. "Of course, if one side is knocked out or loses all their points prior to this, then we'll conclude the round earlier! Neither side may substitute! Let's get this final top four match underway!"

Drew verses May: Top four

Her eye twitched at the sound of the starting buzzer. Combusken wasted no time. Stomping his feet around, a cloud of dust surrounded him before shooting out with flames covering his body. Quickly running over the field, his arms spread out with claws shimmering under the hot sun.

Flygon flapped the large wings, kicking back as he took off. The dark type lept back and landed on the dragon's back as they took off in the sky.

Running off the top, Absol swung his head piece around. A slash of pink psychic energy struck the ground in front of her starter.

Leaping up himself, the disaster Pokémon soared over his back, making a b-line for Munchlax. While her fire fighting type shot up to the mystic Pokémon.

"Screech!" she hollered.

With a deep breath, her normal type let out and ear-piercing noise. The sound waves shot forward, tearing up part of the ground.

Dodging to the side, Absol continued to charge forward. A blue ball of ESP formed over his head, bursting open into a power barrier over his body.

High in the air, Flygon released his own high-pitched screech. Striking her starter in the chest, he was blown back down to the floor.

Glowing a mystic light, Munchlax took up a defensive stance. Squeezing his eyes shut, he took the dazzling zen headbutt head on.

Bringing the dark type to complete halt, the disaster Pokémon spun around. Reaching out, her normal type clutched his tail, preventing an escape.

Combusken spun onto his stomach and faced Absol head on. In the blink of an eye, he disappeared. Reappearing stood up right, his glowing feet swung and into his face. Jumping up, he completed the double kick. Knocking the canine to the side.

A dark blue flame rained down over her two Pokémon. Erupting like some sort of volcano, she noticed Flygon being too high for an easy counter.

"Munchlax defence!" She hollered.

Walking in front of her starter, the big eater stomped his feet around. A cloud of dust shot up around them, battling the flames back like a sort of shield.

Leaping up from the top of the stomping tantrum dust, Combusken let out a loud cry. A spinning tornado erupted from his mouth, shooting up.

Absol sucker punched from underneath. His head appendages glew with dark type energy, slicing through his gut.

Both of them landed down as the dust settled. Flygon ended his dragon breath, having gained height to avoid the small fire spin which would've hit.

She smirked seeing Munchlax finishing his second stockpile. Running forward to the two Pokémon, he curled up into a ball.

A shimmering light shone over his coat as he started picking up speed. Bashing into Absol's back paw, both parted opposite ways, leaving Combusken be.

"Don't let it build up momentum!" Drew hollered.

It seemed to be a fear for her ex as both Pokémon turned to face him. Munchlax curved around the outer field, rolling straight towards Absol once more.

Standing his ground, the dark type's head piece glew with psychic energy. Swiping left and right, he sent numerous psycho cuts across the field.

Each one bashed into the rolling normal type but did little to deter his path. A smile spread over her face as she saw his attempts fail.

That joy quickly vanished as Absol rolled to the side. Her normal type continue his path, taking another wide berth whilst building up more speed.

Now on a direct path with Flygon, the mystic Pokémon was barely an inch of ground. His wings shimmered with metal as both charged in.

Turning at the last second, the steel wing struck him head on. Wobbling from the blow, Munchlax swerved off stage and into the surround water.

Combusken used the opening and jumped onto the dragon's back. Turning up, they rocketed over the field, but her starter held on.

Her eyes flicked between her two Pokémon now on opposite ends of the field. She let out a small sigh of relief as Munchlax resurfaced, floating on his back in the water. Gently kicking his feet whilst floating along, without a care in the world.

Turning her attention upwards, she noticed a very sparatic flight path. Flygon seemed to try and throw his passenger off but to no-avail.

A bright orange flame spiralled around them, engulfing both Pokémon. The fiery rocket entered a downward spiral, falling to the floor.

Sand-filled wind blew out of the dragon ground type. Blowing the fire-spin with it, the sandstorm blew her starter off his back.

"Combusken!" She shouted, knowing this would be a risk but worth it. "The water! Help Munchlax!"

Entering a diving stance, he aimed his body into the water beside the normal type. With a minor splash, he disappeared from sight.

Crossing her fingers, she knew he'd be hindered by the water but right now Munchlax has the biggest advantage. Bubbles formed under the normal type and an orange-jet of water blasted up beneath him. Sending the normal type straight up to the field once more. Combusken resurfacing beneath.

With a sphere of water in hand, he landed on the stage. Tossing his water pulse straight into Absol's face, he took off running towards him.

"Get ready for another rollout!"

Seeing the mystic Pokémon lowering down for another steel wing, she smirked. As he lept, Absol moved to the side, leaving just him and Flygon.

"Ice Punch!" She hollered, mentally thanking Max for the suggestion on his next surprise move after Pacifidlog.

His fist tightened and a cool blue mist surrounded his fist. Striking the mystic Pokémon in the face, he was knocked down to the floor.

Landing on top, cracks formed on the floor beneath with the impromptu body slam. Seeing the mighty dragon down, she smiled having caught them off guard.

Leaping on after him, Absol's claws were extended with dark type energy. Slashing away at him, the big eater stumbled off, trying to avoid the onslaught.

Pushing himself up, the dragon ground type erupted in a flaming tornado. Crying out in pain, he took off and circled around close-ish to the floor.

The wind must've blown the fire spin effects away. Swirling around, he let out another powerful dragon breath straight down.

Jumping back from her normal type. Absol left him be in the eye of the dragon type energy storm.

A weak barrage of embers shot out and hit the centre of the breath. Causing it to expand out, the flames rained down over her newest team member.

Combusken was revealed having climbed up the side of the stage, sticking his claws in. Having used an ember to protect his partner.

"Screech!" May shouted.

Taking a deep breath, her normal type let out a loud screech. The visible soundwaves burst through both flames and struck the mystic Pokémon head on. He let out a pained cry as he fell down to the floor, crashing once more. She felt her breath stick in her throat at the opportunity.

As if reading her thoughts, he charged forward with a glowing blue fist. Flames erupted over the ground dragon once more.

Letting out his own cry, his head emerged from the fire spin. Dark blue flames spewed out the sides of his mouth as he took aim.

Munchlax lept and took the close-range dragon breath head on. Crashing into his opponent, he delivered a second super effective hit.

Each of their Pokémon went rolling along the floor, ending with Munchlax on top of the green dragon. Both had swirls replace their eyes in the final spot.

"Both Munchlax and Flygon have been deemed unable to battle!" Vivian announced. "With just over a minute on the clock, we'll continue in a one-on-one!"

Not able to bring herself to glance up to the scoreboard, she focused her attention on Combusken. Her heart sank at the sight.

His feathered with roughed up and he was slouching, panting heavily. The dip in the water must've done a number on him, especially from that fall.

Absol moved into position, letting out a threatening growl. His head-piece glew bright blue, as he seemed to taunt her first Pokémon.

Straightening himself up, he extended his own claws to the side. Entering a run across the field, a light blue aura of flying type energy surrounded him.

Swinging his head, the psycho cuts launched one by one. Weaving in and out of the onslaught, Combusken closed the gap.

With a leap, he spun and performed a controlled dive down. Crashing his aerial ace head on, the dark type was knocked back slightly.

"Flame charge!" She shouted, thinking of how to counter the effects of the previous dive.

Stomping his feet, a cloud of dust shot up around him. Absol, however, lept forward. His horn seethed with dark type energy.

Sucker punching him in the gut, both Pokémon came flying out with Combusken landing on his back. The disaster Pokémon standing over him.

Letting out a quick burst of embers, the fire balls struck his face. As his opponent stumbled back, her starter rolled over and took off.

Disappearing in the blink of an eye, he reappeared on the opposite side of the field. A red-flame seemed to surround his body as he narrowed his eyes. She wasn't sure if this was some new move or something else, so she quickly pulled out her Pokédex for some info:

Ability Blaze: When close to fainting, this gives an increase to all fire moves used by the user

She quickly put the device away and looked up. "Fire Spin into a quick attack slash!"

With a deep breath, the biggest fire tornado she remembers seeing him produce shot out. It roared over the field with an intense heat.

Bursting through the opening end of the flames, he emerged with both claws extended outwards. Flames draped his body as they soared over the field.

A loud buzzer sounded before the display even reached their opponent. Stumbling forward, the entire display broke down as Combusken kneeled over.

Running up to her starter, she couldn't bring herself to look. Skidding beside him, she placed a hand on his back as the host walked onto the stage.

"And that's time!" Vivian announced as May's head spun to the board. "Looking to the board, our first coordinator moving onto the final is... Drew Shū! We'll see you back this afternoon for our final top four battle! Who'll be facing off to win the ribbon cup?! Only one way to find out so stay tuned!"

Ash sighed as he walked back to the centre. Serena was by his side and May just a little further back with her head held low. While he felt bad for her right now, he knew the taste of defeat all too well. Especially against a major rival. He wished he could say something to make her feel better but until she's got her head on and processed what happened, it'll be best to just let her come to terms in her own time.

Hanging outside, they watched her slump inside without so much of a word. "I'm gonna go get some training in."

"You think we should give her time?" his girlfriend asked.

"We've both lost before, and both needed time." He shrugged. "There'll be a time she needs to talk but that's not right now."

"I'm not so certain... remember Leaf after she and Drake-" She paused. "Anyway, I think she might need comfort sooner than your thinking so I'mma stay."

"Whatever you think is best." He leaned in, pecking her cheek. "She'll probably appreciate your company more anyway."

"Why is that?" she asked.

"Because you make great company," he whispered, giving a quick hug.

Bidding each other good, he couldn't deny that he could be wrong. Everyone is different and Serena has always been pretty good at getting into other people's heads. It didn't take him long to return to the beach and find a secluded section to turn into his makeshift training grounds.

"Come on out everyone!" He declared, tossing the six devices up. A series of lights flashed down and his team of Duskull, Grovyle, Gardevoir, Seviper, Torkoal and Snorunt materialised on the sand in front of him. "Okay guys, time to get to training. May's already battled so now we've got the rest of the day!"

A series of cheers from the group echoed as he scanned the six Pokémon in front of him. Other then Snorunt, he hadn't really thought of the other sessions or pairings. Pinching his lips together, he shrugged. Ideas forming in his head.

"Okay Duskull and Gardevoir, you've both been working on learning skill swap so maybe you can figure it out together!" The two Pokémon walked, or floated, out of the line into a section of the beach. "Grovyle and Seviper... you both work well in forest settings... obviously, we don't have that here so maybe you could test each other's battling prowess in unfriendly environments."

Grovyle closed his eyes and gave a small nod. This seemed to be the opening Seviper needed as her glowing tail slammed down on his head.

Knocking him backwards, he rolled onto his stomach. Glancing back, he would've seen the huntress diving down with glowing fangs and an open mouth.

In the blink of an eye, he took off, leaving a cloud of sand in his path. While his sparring partner dived into the ground, leaving a small hole in the ground.

"Well... that should keep them both busy." He shrugged, walking over to the two remaining Pokémon. "Okay Snorunt, remember what I said before."

"You figured out how to make me evolve?" he asked. "Does gramps have some sort of magic evolution power I've never heard off?"

"Not that I know off." He shrugged.

"But he's your exact opposite. With a wealth of experience and power, not to mention type advantage-" He winked to the fire type. "He can push your limits like none of my other Pokémon can. Evolution requires strength, experience, mind stability and high adrenaline... at least."

"I take it to mean you wish for me to battle him?" Snorunt asked. "How do expect a powerless-"

"The most common-way someone gives up power is by thinking they have none." Torkoal cut him off. "There's no shame in letting others help you."

"He's right," Ash nodded. Smiling as the ice type took off to pick out a section of the beach for his own battle, he kneeled down. "Now Torkoal, I want you to really push him. Keep him on the edge and don't let up. I trust you'll be able to do it without putting him in real danger."

"I will certain do my best." The coal Pokémon smiled.

He turned and walked forward. Blowing out two steams of smoke from his nostrils and shell, he crack his head to either side. Looking up to the sky, he couldn't help but notice the sun increasing in intensity. Glancing back, he inwardly smirked. No-doubt the drought will make it tougher on Snorunt.

Ash smiled and crossed his arms, a sphere of ice shot across the field. Smashing into his fire types shell, Torkoal's expression remained calm.

With a deep breath, he let out a barrage of small fire balls. Flickering across the beach, they struck the ground where Snorunt sat.

Jumping up, he quickly ran back and forth to avoid the embers. He tried to counter with an icy wind, but the embers dispersed it easily.

Inwardly frowning at the panicked look, he noticed the snow hat Pokémon look up to him. Biting down on his inner cheek, he turned away. Part of him felt horrible but he wanted to achieve evolution. Best way to do that is with high intense training. If he felt Torkoal would just keep going regardless, he'd be more supportive, but he remembered his time with Drake in the orange islands. Sometimes tough love is what is needed, such as here.

Partly to heighten the tension for his ice type but also to prevent himself from interfering and ending act for training, he walked away. It just so happened to be his Duskull and Gardevoir who were in the general direction so he decided to walk over.

"Hey guys!" He drew both of their attention. "How's the new move coming along?"

"Real good!" Duskull beamed, floating over to greet him first. "I've pretty much got it, check this out!"

He turned around to the ocean and found a flock of Wingull scattered nearby. He closed his one eye and vibrated violently. ESP radiated off his body.

A single beam shot out and pushed himself back slightly. It struck the water flying type, who started to float without flapping their wings.

Using them instead, the wild sea bird flew away as his ghost plopped down on the floor. "Cool! I can see like... super far away!"

"Nice Duskull." He smiled. "What about you, Gardevoir?"

"Huh." She scoffed slightly, folding her arms. Turning around, she closed her own eyes. ESP radiated off her body, but she had better control of the power.

A single beam shot out of her arms which turned multicoloured. The psybeam struck the ground and blew sand up, scaring the rest of the flock away.

"I think your putting too much power into the attack." He mused. "Status moves tend to need a gentler touch. You can't just brute force it."

"Psybeam got rid of the flock instead of just the one." Gardevoir sneered. "I think it'll work just fine."

"I know your use to being the one to pick stuff up quickly, but I think Duskull is just better suited to learn this-"

"He's not the psychic type," she hissed.

"Maybe not but he's already got psychic type moves down," he replied, "and he's more about tricking and hindrance rather than pure power."

"Hey erm, how long should this last?" his ghost type asked. "I kinda miss floating and stuff."

Smiling down to the first caught Hoenn Pokémon, he pulled out his Pokéball. Quickly recalling him, he sent him back out, floating and all.

"Obviously, he's not about pure power." She turned her back. "It's no wonder he hasn't evolved yet! Maybe you should put him up against Torkoal instead of the new guy. Maybe then he could form an actual attack."

"That's not nice, Gardevoir." he moved to face her. His ghost type floating away with his head down. "Duskull hasn't even said he wants to evolve or-"

"But he was the first one you caught in Hoenn right?" she asked. "How can you expect to win the league if you don't evolve everyone?"

"Evolution isn't everything, and it doesn't instinctively prove anything," he replied, "you've both got different styles and work for different opponents. Duskull is more about hindrance and without that, we might not have taken down Norman's Slaking or many other opponents. While you're more pure power.

"Still doesn't mean being a Dusclops or even Dusknoir wouldn't have helped further." She countered.

"Maybe but evolutions can also have draw backs," he replied, "remember Pikachu. He's beaten every member of our Hoenn team in one training session or another. He's not fully evolved, and he's even defeated multiple Raichu. Because they might have more power but at the cost of speed and reflexes."

"He's not beaten my mega form." She hissed.

"If you'd need a mega evolution to win then I think that proves my point," he replied, "and I'm just saying evolution is a big decision. Every Pokémon has the right to make the choice to evolve or not. If Duskull decides he wants to then of course I'll help him, like with Snorunt. But I won't force him."

Her cheeks puffed up as the redness in her cheeks darkened. Wrinkles decorated her forehead as she stared straight down. In a flash, she teleported away.

Letting out a low sigh, he knew she was just angry about being shown up. She's taken up the role of his Hoenn ace since her evolution so having someone so care-free get a move down before her must've hurt. Pinching the bridge of his nose, he turned to see Duskull floating on the water's edge. The conversation didn't wasn't even about evolution so it was clearly just the first thing she could think off to argue about. He walked over and stood next to the ghost.

"How you feeling?" he asked.

"Good..." he muttered. "Am I wrong?"

"About?" he asked.

"Not being bothered about evolution?" he asked. "It's not like I've been actively avoiding it but-"

"It's just not a priority for you." He offered a small smile, kneeling so they were at eye level. "And that's completely fine. Everyone is different and regular evolution can't be reversed. If you're not sure, then you shouldn't try to force it. You've met Venusaur, right?"

"Uh huh."

"Well, he had trouble with his own evolution back in the day." He sighed, sitting down to stare up to the sky. "It wasn't the exact same but we really focused on his speed as a Bulbasaur. Obviously, that had a massive effect when he evolved and adapting to a more tank-stall style really messed him up. He put his own evolution off for a while. Just him actively fighting it was enough to stop it even if he would've evolved long before he eventually did."

"I'm not saying I'd never do it," he replied, "I just... I've got other things I'd rather focus on. Like battling's fun and stuff but it's not the be all, end all."

"And that's fine. It's your choice at the end of the day," he replied, "if you change your mind and you want to focus on evolving then we can set up specific training, like we are with Snorunt. Just let me know, okay?"

"Deal." He smiled. "But... what about Gardevoir? Won't she be mad?"

"She was just letting off steam because she's not use to being shown up," he replied, "I'll speak to her again when she's calmed down."

"Shame... doesn't she know there's a better way to blow off steam?" he asked with a signature cheeky grin. Letting out a low breath, he cringed at the implication his ghost type made. "Giggidy."

"I think that's my cue to leave." He stood up. "How about you just focus on turning your psychic energy into an actual attack now. Just because you're not interested in evolving doesn't mean training is out of the question."

Hearing the childish laughter from the requiem Pokémon caused a small smile to flicker on his lips as he turned to walk away. While he made his way over to the final pairing, he couldn't really see them thanks to a thick black smoke covering their battlefield. He shrugged since Seviper clearly could handle most environments to suit her style even if not exactly what he told them to work on for the training session.

As he approached, he noticed a familiar looking boy to the side of the field. He had a Swampert stood beside him. Smiling at his rival, he turned slightly to approach. "Hey Brendan. How's it going?"

"Hey Ash, I'm good," he replied as they met with a firm handshake, "what about you?"

"I'm good." He smiled. "Just getting in some training after May's battle. I take it you came to watch her compete?"

"Uh huh." He nodded. "Can I ask you something?"

"Of course," he shrugged.

"What can you tell me about Drew?" he asked. "I know some of his history with May but-"

"It all started just before her first contest here in Slateport," he explained, going into their many run-ins with the green haired boy.

May sighed as she sat on the edge of her bed in the Pokémon centre room. The light was off, and curtains mostly closed but a small crack of sunlight came in, giving the smallest bit of detail but it wasn't like she cared right now. A deafening silence bounced off the walls as she continued to replay the battle in her head. Her hands tightened on the covers with each passing moment.

She could've made the call for that final display sooner. If it had hit Absol then she would've had enough points... or maybe not sent Munchlax in for the double knock out. Maybe they could take down Flygon without her big eater going down too. Of course the point she truly messed up was sending having her starter dive into the ocean. He's a fire type, why wouldn't a move like that hinder him completely. He was a sitting psyduck for the final clash-

A knock on the door drew her out of the thoughts. She briefly wondered if it was Nurse Joy letting her know about Combusken and Munchlax's condition, but she doubted it since she hadn't long left them with her. Before she could conjure up another idea, a second knock followed.

"May?" a familiar voice came from the other side. "It's Serena. Can you let me in? I just want to check you're okay."

Closing her eyes, she let out a long sigh. Part of her wanted to be left alone but she knew her friend wouldn't do that until she saw she was safe. Forcing herself to stand up, she walked over and clicked the lock on the door. Turning back, she slumped back to her seat, hearing the door creek open behind her.

"How you feeling?" she asked.

"How'd you think?" she hissed. "Sorry... I'm just-"

"No, I get it," she replied, "stupid question really. I'm sorry for asking it. Maybe this will make you feel better."

Turning her head, she saw the honey-blonde girl holding an ice cream cone. The sincere and honest smile on her face, caused her own lips to flick up in a small thanks, accepting the sweet-treat. As she started slowly eating the ice cool desert, Serena took a seat next to her on the bed.

"Thanks... for this." She gestured to the cone. "It's... nice."

"You don't need to feel sad about the battle, ya 'know." She offered a small smile. "It was a good battle. You all did a great job."

"But we lost-" She sighed. "And... that's not even the worst part... it's that we lost to Drew of all people. He'd been planning this for-"

"He had been planning it for months and you still managed to knock out one of his Pokémon specifically trained to defeat you!" She jumped up to her feet with a fist of determination thrown into the air. "You may have lost, so what? Everyone loses. Ash hasn't won a proper national league yet. Heck, I didn't make it-"

"-to the master class?" She cut the girl off. "Sorry... I erm. I was planning on winning this... since you've been helping me... to make it like a-"

"May-" She sat back down, placing a hand on her shoulder. "Even if you won, that wouldn't have been my victory. You can only win for yourself and your Pokémon. I wouldn't let anyone take credit for my grand festival in Johto, not even Ash. Likewise, however he performs in the league, that'll be his and his teams accomplishment. You've grown so far from the girl who we met in Littleroot. You just need to have more confidence in yourself."

"Thanks..." she uttered, turning to the side. Slowly, she continued to consume the frozen treat, letting her friends words sink in.

"We should watch the top four match-" she grabbed the remote and turned on the tele to the grand festival.

"To support Sakura, right?" she asked.

"Yes, but not only that," she replied, "you wanna be prepared for your match tomorrow."

"My match?" she asked, frowning. "But I lost-"

"Yes, but before the final, they have a third-fourth play-off," Serena explained, "whoever wins this match will face Drew but you'll be facing the other one."

Biting down on her lower lip, she never considered such a thing but she figured it made sense. Turning her attention to the television, she found herself already considering the thought of competing once more... maybe it's because she's on good terms with both of the possible opponents but she couldn't help but smile softly. Having the thought of her final festival being the battle with Drew just didn't sit right with her.

"Welcome back to this year's Hoenn's grand festival final top four match!" Vivian announced, walking onto the stage. "Our competitors today are two classy coordinators who are both some of the favourites to win. Firstly, we have the king conductor of the musical arts, Clark Klemperer!"

Seeing the blue haired coordinator walk out with a smile on his face. He had his musical stick in his hand, carefully holding the very tip end. He stopped in the trainers box and turned to the crowd, giving them one a profession curtsy with a sense of grace, she found her hands interlocked with each other.

"And his opponent!" Vivian announced. "A member of the Johto Kimono sisters whose shown a deep relation to the legends of the world. Sakura Sayo!"

The pink haired girl walked out in one of her traditional kimono dresses. Her hair was done up in a bun as she seemed to have a heavily powdered face. She gave both Clark and the audience a different bowl before standing still with her arms connected, hidden by the long sleeves.

"This will be a two-on-two double battle between these two coordinators with a five-minute time limit!" Vivian explained. "Both sides have already registrared their Pokémon and the winner will be the one to deplete their opponents points to zero first! So, let's see who'll be performing today!"

"Da capo, Houndoom and Infernape!" He held two devices out. Two red beams shot out and his duel fire type materialised in front of him.

The first one she recognized not only from her Pacifidlog contest but from Ash's the couple times he brought him over. His second Pokémon, however, was completely new to her. A bipedal, primate-like Pokémon stood with a primarily reddish-brown fur which had sections of white fur on the chest, head, and lower legs. Several golden markings adorn the body: swirled; circular ones on the knees and shoulders; flame-shaped ones on the back of his hands; and a stripe around the back that formed two swirls on the chest. A large flame-crown sat on top of his head. He had an orange, rounded muzzle, long, round ears with blue inside; and a red ridge over the eyes which were blue with yellow sclerae. There were five blue digits on both the hands and feet, with a long tail waving behind the Pokémon. Gulping at the hardened expressions on both fire types faces, she scanned the unknown opponent:

Infernape, The flame Pokémon. The final evolved form of Chimchar. Close to humans, this Pokémon makes friends easily and grows up with them taking on a protective role of those it deems so. Due to their overzealous fighting, they came close to extinction and now fulfil a starter role in Sinnoh

"So that must be his starter-" She muttered, unable to look away from the intimidating Pokémon.

"I don't think so-" Serena muttered. "Clark is from Johto so if any are his starter, I'd think it was his Typhlosion. Of course, he might not have a traditional starter and not have shown them at all."

"But what about what the dex said?" she asked.

"He's also got Charizard, whose a starter from Kanto and Typhlosion, like I said," she replied, "you see, May, starters aren't just good options for new trainers because they're traditional good with people but because their species were near extinction. The idea being breeding grounds are set up to help preserve their species, then they get partnered up with new trainers to grow together. Protecting them from the predators of the natural wild. Letting both grow."

"Like Swampy back on Dewford with his Mudkip's!" She exclaimed.

"Exactly," she replied, "then the hope is their numbers grow and they can return to the wild. At which point, a new species which is likely in the same position gets the same treatment. I remember hearing stories of Seedot's being a starter in Hoenn before Treecko were. And of course, not everyone gets a traditional starter. Some just make friends with a random Pokémon or have their parents catch one for them. Or like with Ash and how he got Pikachu."

She nodded but her attention turned back to the screen. Sakura gently held out her two sleeve-covered arms and a red light shot out from both. In front of her materialised an Azumarill and Sableye. She remembered seeing the former back in Rustboro's appeals round. While she can't recall meeting the pink-haired girls ghost type, she was reminded of Phoebe's on mount Pyre. She shivered, not being a big fan of the ghouls and haunting types.

"The winner of this battle will be the side who puts on the best display within our five-minute time limit!" Vivian announced. "Of course, if one side is knocked out or loses all their points prior to this, then we'll conclude the round earlier! Neither side may substitute! Let's get this final top four match underway!"

Sakura verses Clark: Top Four

She watched a powerful stream of flames shot across the field. Curtsy of Clark's canine, his second Pokémon ran forward straight through the fire. His fists sparked with electricity as he has the embers splash out against his shiny coat.

Azumarill shot up in a jet of water, flying over the stage in a sparkling display. With speed, she dived down into the ocean section of the field.

Rearing a fist back, Infernape's fully formed thunder punch prepared. A loud cry echoed from the primate as he closed in on the second of Sakura's pair.

Leaping up, Sableye clapped his hands in the fire fighting types face. Chuckling mischievously, he lept over and dived into a shadow on the floor.

Blinking in a stunned silence, the thunder punch had cancelled out. The flame Pokémon looked around, a little perplexed by the turn of events.

A jet of water erupted from the ocean, blowing into his side. The aqua rabbit emerged on the stage, being the source of the blast, which hit Infernape.

Knocking him out of the flames, he skidded on the ground. Rolling back onto all fours, he faced off against the water fairy type.

Sableye made his own move know, jumping up out of his shadow sneak. Tackling Houndoom's side, he climbed onto the canine's back. Holding onto the scruff of his neck, he let out another crackle of laughter. Seeing the dark Pokémon attempt to throw him off, reminded May of the old western movies taming Tauros.

The camera cut to Infernape charging forward. Both his fists sparked with electricity once more as the aqua rabbit took up a defensive stance.

"Icy wind!" Sakura shouted.

Taking a deep breath, she let out a cool blast of air. Striking the floor, a thin layer of ice formed under the feet of Clark's flame Pokémon.

Sliding on the surface, his fists electricity dispersed. Swiping on the floor, he just continued to pick up speed as Azumarill closed in.

A sphere of water erupted around her, giving her body a healing glow and she jumped straight into the fire fighting type. Grabbing the open hand, she spun onto her back. Rolling underneath the fully-evolved starter, she let out a quick burst of bubble beams into his chest. Knocking him over onto his face.

Letting out a primal roar, the primate's flame crown erupted. Spinning back onto his legs, a light blue aura of flying type energy burned around him.

Throwing himself forward, he let loose on the aqua rabbit. Punch after punch hit the water fairy type as she cowered in her stance.

Pink fairy type energy surrounded her own body. Grunting through the assault, she began returning her own punches, matching play rough with acrobatics.

The camera cut back to the other pair and Sableye landed flat on his back. Standing over him, the canine's fangs sparked with electricity.

"Use the electricity!" Sakura hollered.

Leaping up, the gremlin seemed to grab the electrified sparks. Causing his opponent to stumble back, he tossed the sparks over the dark Pokémon.

"And Sableye turns Houndoom's own thunder fang into a thunder wave!" Vivian announced. "Showing off his prankster ability in a creative way!"

He tried to retreat from the confrontation but to no-avail. Walls of purple ghost type energy formed in front of him, with energy zapping down.

Howls of pain echoed from the hex combination. While the ghost dark type emerged from the top of the wall. Jumping off, he spun in the air like some sort of professional diver. Sticking his arm out, his clawed hand glew with the orange-tint of fighting type energy.

His brick break crashed down direct across Houndoom's face. Knocking him back, the hex continued to prod his body as he laid on the side with swirls in eyes.

"And Clark's Houndoom has been deemed unable to continue!" Vivian announced. "Taking a nasty blow into his points, Clark has three minutes to change this back around! While Sakura's right on track for her own victory, the question is now, which of them shall pull it out in the end?!"

The camera cut back to Infernape, who upper-punched Azumarill, knocking her into the air slightly. His fist clenched and turned to electricity.

Delivering the unblocked thunder punch to her stomach. She was sent flying over the field and off the edge. Splashing as she disappeared from sight.

Panting heavily, he turned to face the darkness Pokémon. Smashing his chest in an aggressive manner, he took off over the field with speed.

Flames erupted around his body as they spread out. She couldn't help but see Combusken's final move from her own battle within the display.

She glanced to the side to see Serena holding her Pokédex out. It seemed to scan the display on their television screen:

Raging fury: This move has the user release an intense heat and inner fire. Entering an onslaught, it can cause confusion if left unchecked.

"So it's like a fire version of petal dance?" she muttered, seeing her put the device back.

"Or outrage."

Her eyes found their way back onto the screen, which showed a wide shot of the stage. The points on Sakura's side falling with each passing second of the fiery display. While the ghost dark type stood, seemingly shaking his body from his previous clash.

Tightening his fist, the gremlin disappeared. Reappearing right in front of his opponent, he sucker punched Infernape under the chin.

Causing him to stop and stumble backwards, the fire continued raging. A bright red flash shot out of the darkness Pokémon's eyes.

Freezing in place, the fire died down as Infernape seemed stunned. A mischievous crackle echoed as he dived into a shadow on the floor.

Zooming underneath his legs, he jumped up out of his shadow sneak. With his head glowing with ESP, he crashed into the fire fighting types back.

"Breath mark, Infernape." Clark instructed with a surprisingly calm tone.

Letting out a loud cry, the fully evolved starter dived forward. Creating a whole on the floor, he disappeared from sight.

Sableye wasted no time in creating another shadow sneak. Sweeping across the stage floor, in some sort of dance with a purple streak. It didn't take long for the flame Pokémon to burst out, trying to knock the opponent up. However, he just missed.

Diving back into the floor, the two Pokémon continued this dance across the stage. With the ghost dark type leading them along.

"Now Azumarill!" Sakura shouted.

A jet of water erupted out of the ocean. Crashing into Infernape as he lept up once more, unknowing into her path. The two Pokémon went flying higher.

Jumping out of his shadow, her darkness Pokémon moved underneath the two Pokémon. Water sprinkling over him from the waterfall.

Spinning at the apex, she used her full force to send Infernape down. Bellowing through the air, he was unable to do anything to counter.

White rocks formed around Sableye and one by one he threw them up. Each hit the starter on his way down. Leaving him to crash into the floor, Sakura's two team members moved either side as a cloud of dust shielded the results. It slowly started to fade as the screen cut once more.

"And that's it!" Vivian announced as the scoreboard was shown. "With both her opponents unable to continue, despite two minutes left on the clock, our final coordinator moving onto the final is... Sakura Sayo! We need to call it a day here, but our judges will be holding a question and answer on our secondary channel for those looking for the grand festival fill! We hope to see you tomorrow where our two finalist will battle for the title of top coordinator and this ribbon cup! But before that we'll have a third-fourth match between May and Clark tomorrow morning! There's still a lot to look forward too so stay tuned!"

May let out a loud cheer and jumped to her feet, throwing her fist into the air. Landing with a loud thud, she heard it echo in the small-ish room and her eyes widened. Feeling her cheeks heat up, she looked to the side and saw the honey-blonde girl sat with a smirk.

"Oops, sorry." She mareepishly whispered, glancing down to her feet.

"No... it's nice to see you so into it," Serena smiled. "But you know what this means?"

"Yeah." She nodded. "Tomorrow, we face Clark... man, who should I use?"

"I've got some ideas." She shrugged, standing up. "But in the end it comes down to you and your Pokémon. You need to decide."

"That's not fair, I'd still like to know-" she humped, crossing her arms in an exaggerated manner.

"Tell you what." She smiled, pulling out a piece of paper and pen. "I'll write down who I'd pick... in your position, of course. Then once you've decided, I'll show you. That seems to be the fairest way without influencing your decision."

"Fine." She rolled her eyes. "I'mma going for a walk. It'll be nice to get some fresh air and it should help me."

"Okay," she replied, following her to the door and waiting for her to lock up. "Ash is still off training so I'm going to find Sakura. You should find us once you're done. I'm sure she'll appreciate the company before the big battle tomorrow."

"Right." She nodded.

The two of them walked together to the front of the centre before splitting up at the entrance. While they were both heading off to the beach, she made sure to avoid the stadium and head off to a quieter section to let herself be with her thoughts. As she came up on the cities beautiful sight, she smiled.

Seeing Ash off in the distance, he had Snorunt out with Torkoal nearby. He seemed to be holding a mini-battle between the two of them. While the setting sun wasn't really helping the fire type, she knew without watching which would win. It didn't take a genius. The level of experience and typing-

Stopping in her tracks, she briefly wandered when she became Max. He's always been the brainiac who knows strategy, typing and all that jazz. A small smile crept on her face as she set off along the beach. He has been helping her recently, especially with Munchlax and when not constantly correcting her, they get on pretty well. Heh. Maybe she should try to think this through like Max would then.

Firstly, she needs to study her opponent. That's easy. Clark specialises in fire types and conducts matches like music. Not much can be done for the latter so she should focus on that first part. Straight away it rules out Pokémon like Beautifly, Mawile, Lileep and Bulbasaur... well, she should probably rule out any of her team whose already competed in the festival. They need chance to rest. Of course, that also eliminates Huntail who possibly has the best advantage-

Scratch that, most of his team have either electric or grass moves. Along with needing the water, she'll be in hugh trouble. Which other Pokémon does she have which have advantages? Munchlax hugh move-pool is one but he's already battled... but he's not her only Pokémon with a large move pool.

Mightyena also has dig... that's useful... unless he brings Camerupt with earthquake. Which would also cause Minun more issues than most. Not to mention she faced him back in Fallarbor. No-doubt he'd be more prepared for her then most of her team.

Clenching her fist, she hit her forehead a couple times letting out a stressed noise. With a clenched hand, she pinched the bridge of her nose.

Pacing back and forth across the sand, she briefly wondered about Manaphy. The sight of a vast ocean and accompanying sea-air usually brought her thoughts to the pure water type. A low sign escaped her lips as she came to a stop. "I just need to pick a pair. It shouldn't be this hard."

"I don't know what you're worried about." A snide voice uttered in her ear. Spinning around, she found he ex stood with hands in his pockets and a smirk on his face. "I mean it's just the third-fourth play offs. It's not like it actually means anything. Your just the opening to my crowning of top coordinator tomorrow."

"You've still got to beat Sakura-"

A hand appeared in her face, causing the words to die in her mouth. "As if I need to worry about her. She only won today because she knocked out Clark's pair and the final is a different format. Best of three with the only one knockout victory being permitted. I can outperform her in my sleep."

"I almost forgot how humble you are." She hissed, mostly under her breath.

"My victory is ensured for tomorrow. Just like our match up today." She felt her blood boil at his little smirk. "To think someone like I would actually be interested in you made this entirely possible, you know. I knew after your Fallarbor contest I needed a plan in case we fought. You was the wild card."

"Wha-"

"I got close to you so I could see your team first hand. Know what I needed to be prepared for," he replied, "it's also why I kept Flygon and Absol secret. I couldn't let you turn my plan back on me. Flygon was mostly to counter Altaria, she is your biggest threat, after all."

"Then why did Flygon lose to Munchlax?" she asked.

"Like I said, a wild card." His browl narrowed. "And I much more about style then strength. Which is where Absol came in."

"Huh?" she humped.

"Of course, your other Pokémon would've been anyone's guess, so I went with versatility." He smirked. "Dark, flying, bug, psychic, fighting, ghost... pretty much any type you could ask for. He had a good chunk of your Pokémon covered and those he didn't, Flygon did... like Altaria. Why didn't you use her?"

"Why are you so focused on Altaria?" she asked before her eyes widened. "You said she's my strongest... what? Did it hurt your ego that I wouldn't." She pulled out air-quotes for emphasis. "Bring out my strongest to face you?"

She could've sworn she heard him let out a low growl in response. "It doesn't matter. The result was the same regardless. You should consider yourself lucky to have the attention facing the eventual winner will bring you. Maybe you'll have better luck in the next-"

A blur shot past her with a rushing wind. She couldn't even describe the sound which followed as everything seemed to be a bit of a whirlwind.

An awkward silence bellowed as she took a second to register what just happened. Drew was on the floor with a nasty looking cut on his lip as Brendan stood between herself and the green haired boy. His fist were tightly held together by his side, shaking as if encouraged to do it again.

"Why you-"

Drew's words died in his throat as he found himself on his feet. He was a good bit shorter than Brendan and while not particularly muscular, her childhood friend had grown in his journey. She couldn't quite make out the boys expression but given her ex's reaction, she could make a good guess.

"Listen bush-head, I think it's time you left." His voice was low and direct. The finalist swallowed hard before turning on his heel and walking away. Hearing his muttered grunts did bring a smile to her face. She turned to face the boy still stood by her side, but he turned away. "S-sorry May, I erm... I should go."

Seeing the childhood friend run off, she frowned. Part of her knew that he was wrong for resorting to violence but another part felt Drew got what he deserved after everything he's done to her. A warm fuzzy feeling tingled over her body as she wondered back to centre. She couldn't stop replaying the moment in her head. A smile plastered itself on her lips.
