Chapter 1
Luna Burgess burst into the room, not expecting to find a piece of chocolate aimed straight for her head.
"Holy shit, Lori, quit throwing stuff at me! I have something important to say!" Luna intoned, her usually jovial face quite serious. The entire room stilled, not used to seeing her in this type of mood.
"What, did something happen between you and Kevin, finally?" Lori joked.
"No, but it involves him." Luna said, cracking her knuckles in nervous impatience as her friends continued to talk over her.
"It's about friggin' time." Whitney snickered, from her position stretched out on her bed with her head towards the door.
"I don't think y'all understand the term soulmates. No, what I have to tell you is very important and probably pretty scary." Luna said, taking off her scarf and jacket. "You know how I'm always wearing scarves…it's not just because they are fashionable. It's because I'm hiding something that could turn the entire world against me."
"You're a bad cook? We knew that…" Lori sniped, privileged to talk about other people's cooking abilities since she herself usually fed most the people on their floor of the dorm.
As freshmen at Winthrop University, not much was taken seriously by the girls. Oh sure, they concentrated on schoolwork when they had to, but life was a party, and school was like a bad dream.
"I'm a vampire, and Kevin is my soulmate. We have a bond that goes back to our births. Nothing but death could separate us, and since we are dead already, well….that means we are pretty damn inseperable." Luna whispered in a conspiratorial tone, which of course was why Lori and Whitney broke into loud laughter.
"Y'all shut up and listen!" Luna said, lifting her head and showing off two holes a little under an inch apart on her neck that looked distinctly like a bite mark. When she lowered her head, her lips parted and bared inch long fangs at the girls.
Whitney and Lori jumped back in shock. "What the hell!" Whitney snapped, as Lori tried to move towards her jewelry box, grabbing a crucifix.
"Don't bother. Those don't hurt me." Luna smirked, moving forward in a sultry sway. Whitney's eyes were wild with fear, but she stood her ground as the vampire approached.
"Guys, we've been friends for a year, what you think I'm going to do? Kill you? If I wanted to do that, I could have many times by now…you always leave your door unlocked. I'm trying to save you…"
"Save us from WHAT?" Lori harped, her arm held out with the silver plated cross in the palm of her hand.
"Lori, I know you've read the Harry Potter books. You know I'm a vampire, so surely you can't disbelieve that magic exists. Voldemort is after you, both of you, and several of the other girls on the floor."
At that moment, Chelli, another girl from the floor, walked into the room, surprised to find two of her friends cowering away from a third. When Luna turned around, her fangs protruding from her mouth, Chelli smirked and said, "I knew there was a reason I had two stakes in my room! I'll go get them," and she turned and left.
Luna pleaded with the two remaining girls, "Keep that homicidal maniac away from me."
"That's not homicide. It's vampire-cide." Whitney quipped, her mouth getting the better of her fear. Luna cocked her head and looked at Whitney strangely, almost as if Whitney's unusual commentary wasn't something out of the norm for the girls.
"What's in it for us?" Lori asked, interest and curiosity starting to overcome her common sense.
"Well, considering I'm here to save your ass, I think that would be….oh yeah, your lives!" Luna snapped, her fangs retreating so her teeth looked ordinary. "Now we don't have any time to lose…Lori, go get Hollie, Chelli, and Shaylin. Whitney, get Ashley and Sam. Come on now, no time to waste. We've still got to go get Joe from Thomson."
"What about everybody else? You can't possibly mean that we are supposed to leave them here. Voldemort would kill them!" was the indignant response from Lori, who tossed her long dark brown hair in a sign of frustration.
