Again. Once again, love got lost halfway. Amelia couldn't tell if she was disappointed, sad, hopeless or all of the options together. Her relationship with Kai was not long, but very much intense. Just after she was able to stand up for herself with Link, she found herself lost again in someone else's desires and priorities.
Scout was an issue between them. Kai said they tried to cope, to be a part of a family, but they couldn't. And Amelia had no way out of this situation. Nothing would be more important than her son. She offered Kai a peaceful exit, she couldn't force nobody to stay in a relationship, she didn't want that either. But Kai said they would try again, harder this time, and Amelia believed. She wanted so bad to save this relationship, she fell in love so quickly.
That's the dangerous thing about love: once you give in and surrender, you become blind. You stop prioritizing yourself because you only see love. Even when things become very much obvious, you just cannot see.
Maggie and Meredith tried to warn Amelia. They were finding extremely weird how Kai was behaving lately and how often Amelia was feeling sad because of them. If there was something Meredith knew very well was the conflict between relationships and kids and that's why she knew maybe Kai wasn't the right choice for Amelia. They made it clear how Scout wouldn't be part of their life as a son, not even as a family member. And that was hard enough for Maggie and Meredith to watch.
The distance was something else to worry about. Amelia thought it would be easier, because in the beginning Kai was committed to the relationship, often surprising Amelia in Seattle. After a few months, they just stopped flying to see the neurosurgeon. If Amelia wanted to spend time with Kai, she was the one responsible for flying to Minnesota and jungle all of her other responsibilities, like Scout, work and Meredith's kids.
The last few months were harder on the couple. Even though Amelia flew a lot to see them, Kai often chose to spend time with their friends or even at work, leaving Amelia alone multiple times. One of these times, Kai came back home wasted. They were so high and drunk, that Amelia couldn't share the same bed. She tried to have a conversation with Kai the morning after, but only resulted in screaming and resentment.
Their relationship was already hanging by a thread when Kai were careless enough for Amelia to find out they have been cheating on her for quite some time now. It was a classic cliché finding out: Amelia's phone died as they was driving back to Kai's house. She asked for Kai's phone to video call Link and Scout. As she was talking to her son, a message came up in the top of the screen, saying, "last night was great, already missing your kiss". Amelia just had time to end the call and look at Kai immediately.
"What? What's wrong?" – Kai asked.
"Seriously?" – Amelia asked.
"What happened? Why are you looking at me like that?" – Kai seemed not to have a clue about what just had happened.
"Where were you last night, Kai?" – Amelia asked, now disgusted.
"I told you already" – Kai answered without even looking at Amelia's face.
"I want to hear it again" – Amelia said.
"I worked at the lab until 10pm and then passed by a friend's to pick up my new guitar" – Kai answered, calmly.
"And did you fuck this friend of yours?" – Amelia asked, crying.
"What are you talking about? Of course not" – Kai lied, slightly guilty.
"Well, she must disagree with you, since she misses your kiss already. Please, pull over" – Amelia asked.
"Amelia, where the hell did you get this from?" – Kai asked, now nervously.
"FROM THE FUCKING TEXT YOU RECEIVED RIGHT NOW, YOUR DISGUSTING LIAR!" – Amelia screamed, angrily.
"Amelia, calm down! Can we talk?" – Kai tried to calm her down.
"Pull over this damn car, I want to leave" – Amelia demanded, crying.
"Leave to where? All of your stuff is at my house. Let's talk, please" – Kai asked.
"How could you?" – Amelia asked.
Kai, then, stopped their car at the roadside so they could talk. It wasn't easy or pleasant, but it needed to happen, sooner or later.
"Amelia, I'm sorry. It wasn't meant for you to find out like that" – Kai started to apologize.
"Oh, so you think the problem is the way I've found out?" – Amelia said, sarcastically.
"Of course not. I just feel terrible, that's all" – Kai sounded sincere.
"Did you feel terrible last night fucking somebody else? I guess not" – Amelia was deeply hurt.
"I don't have anything to say, except that I am sorry. I am really sorry" – Kai said.
"Why? Why did you do that? Do you like her? How long is it going on?" – Amelia asked.
"I don't know, things are not good between us and I was weak. I'm sorry" – Kai repeated.
"Stop saying you're sorry! Answer me. How long?" – Amelia shouted.
"A few weeks" – Kai answered.
"Oh my God, I'm such an idiot" – Amelia could not believe in that.
"Amelia, maybe we should take a break. I think we both need some time to figure things out" – Kai suggested.
"You don't even want to try, do you? You're relieved" – Amelia asked, hurt.
Kai just remained in silence. After a few minutes, Kai started driving again to their home. Amelia packed up her stuff and before she opened up the door, she said:
"I've moved mountains for you. To be with you. You're a horrible person"
