At home, Amelia was really sad. Meredith and Maggie talked to her, but they didn't want to say "I told you so" because that wouldn't do no good to Amelia. She was heartbroken, mostly because she tried harder than she should. She knew that.
Two weeks after their break up, Amelia had a delicate case at the hospital. A 25-week pregnant woman showed up at the ER with seizures, without any history of convulsing or other neurological diseases. Amelia ran several tests and exams trying to find out why she was convulsing. At this point, Amelia was also concerned about the baby's health. A group of doctors, including Jo Wilson and Carina De Luca, was involved in this case.
De Luca and Wilson were doing an ultrasound when they noticed something weird. After discussing the issue between them, they went looking for Amelia.
"Dr. Shepard, do you have a minute?" – Carina De Luca asked, noticing Amelia was heading to the OR.
"Sure, what is it?"- Amelia asked.
"We think you should take a look at this. The baby's spine" – Carina said, showing the exams.
"Wow. It's a hell of a tumor. Is it a type III or IV?" – Amelia asked.
"I would like to say III. But I'm not sure. He needs fetal surgery" – Carina answered.
"He needs. Stat." – Amelia agreed.
The neonatal doctor on call took the exams and started to analyze them. His face wasn't pleasant. Amelia knew this type of disease was very aggressive and, depending on the type, it could be fatal.
"It's a type III Sacrococcygeal teratoma. A very big one. I think it's a very risky surgery to do before the birth. My recommendation is try to deliver him as soon as possible" – The doctor pointed.
"He's too small. Can you do an exposed fetal surgery?" – Jo Wilson asked.
"I'm not confident it's safe. The tumor is mostly inside the baby's abdomen. The safest path is to deliver him soon" – The doctor answered and left the three women feeling defeated.
"Well, there's one person who can do this surgery" – Carina suggested and both Jo and Amelia looked at her waiting for the answer – "Robbins"
"I'll call her" – Amelia said and left the two of them there.
Stepping outside the hospital, Amelia picked up her phone and opened up her contact list, scrolling down to the letter R. There was it: Robbins, Arizona.
"Dr. Shepard, hi" – Arizona greeted her old colleague.
"Hey, Robbins! How are you? How's life in New York?" – Amelia asked.
"I'm fine. New York isn't as good as Seattle, but work is going great" – Arizona said and soon asked the real reason for the call, that surely wasn't just to catch up – "Is everything ok?"
"Well, I have a case in here. That kind only you could do" – Amelia said, confident that there is nothing better than a challenge to cheer up a good surgeon.
"Tell me about it" – Arizona asked, excited.
"Well, it's a fetus with type III SCT. Dr. Phelps said it could only be done after the birth. We don't believe the baby or the mother can wait" – Amelia explained.
"How far is the pregnancy? Is the mother healthy?" – Arizona asked, interested.
"25 weeks. She presented convulsing episodes for no reason, nothing to be found yet" – Amelia said.
"25 weeks is too soon. This baby needs to develop more" – Arizona exclaimed.
"I think so, too, and so do Wilson and De Luca. But Phelps says it's not safe" – Amelia agreed with her old colleague.
"Can you send me the files? I will take a look" – Arizona asked.
"Of course, I'll e-mail you everything. Let me know what you think" – Amelia said.
After spend some time diving into the case, Arizona felt strange. It was a difficult case, for sure, but she could do it. The weirdness was that old feeling of belonging somewhere. She felt that way about Grey-Sloan. She still felt that way, even miles away from the hospital that changed her life. Also, tt was a feeling that something about this case would change her life again, even if it was just for a day. She called Amelia back in the end of the day.
"Hey, Amelia, it's me. Can you talk?" – Arizona asked when the brown-haired woman picked up the call.
"If it's good news, I'm all ears" – Amelia joked.
"Well, I can do it. The surgery. But it will require some things" – Arizona stated.
"Bring it on" – Amelia exclaimed.
"Well, I need to run several tests in person. I need another exam, more detailed. And I will need a full team operating with me. It's not going to be easy" – Arizona explained.
"I'll make sure you will get everything. How soon can you fly in?" – Amelia asked.
"I'll reschedule a few surgeries in here so I can fly tomorrow night." – Arizona said.
"Great, Arizona. Thank you so much" – Amelia was feeling grateful that the baby would have a chance.
"Wait, Amelia. Does Bailey know about this? About me doing the surgery?" – Arizona asked, worried.
"Well, not yet. But she will. I will tell her right now. Please, send me all you need and I'll arrange it" – Amelia asked and they soon hung up.
