After they spent some time talking to the patient, looking through the previous exams and scans, Amelia and Arizona headed to a conference room with the other doctors involved to discuss the case. Arizona was leading the presentation with passion and confidence. That made Amelia realize how powerful and hot Arizona was. Soon as these thoughts invaded the brunette's head, she tried to dust it off. Not only Arizona was a friend and a colleague, she didn't know if Arizona and Callie were back together or not. Amelia always knew – and said – Arizona was a gorgeous and interesting woman, but truth to be told, she never thought about Arizona in a sexual way. Maybe she was just needy after her hard breakup.
After the presentation, Arizona felt confident about the case. It was going to be hard, but she had a good team to work with. She scheduled the other exams to the next morning.
"So, I'm good to go and I'll be here tomorrow morning. Are you done for the day?" – Arizona asked Amelia.
"Yes, just need to check one post-op and I'm free. Are you going to the hotel? Do you need a ride?" – Amelia offered.
"There's no need, but thank you. I'm calling a cab" – Arizona answered.
"Actually, do you have any plans for tonight? Do you want to have dinner or maybe a drink?" – Amelia invited and smiled, a little embarrassed.
"Yeah, I could use a drink at Joe's. But wait, are you drinking?" – Arizona asked, surprised.
"I will suit myself with a nice ginger ale, don't worry. Can we meet there in like 15, 20 minutes?" – Amelia suggested.
"Sure! Sounds perfect. See you in a bit" – Arizona said and smiled.
That smile. The thought invaded Amelia's head and soon she tried to vanish it again. She never really noticed how beautiful was that smile. Everybody knew Arizona could smile just using her eyes, but suddenly her feature seemed perfect to Amelia. She went to her patient's room to check on him and then headed to the attending's lounge to change her scrubs to a regular outfit. If she they would have a drink together, she would've picked a better outfit in the morning. She entered Joe's and spotted Arizona at the bar, by herself. Suddenly Amelia felt a little nervousness, the same feeling she has when she is arriving on a date or something alike. That tiny little moment, nanoseconds that her stomach turns inside out and a dizziness takes control of your head, until you take the first step and everything becomes just a good anxious. The difference was: this wasn't a date, she shouldn't feel like that. Noticing Amelia was taking a long time to arrive, Arizona looked back, towards Joe's entrance, hoping her colleague was coming soon. As soon as she spotted Amelia, she opened up that big smile again, waving at her.
That smile. Again.
Amelia ordered a ginger ale and another glass of white wine to Arizona. They've talked a lot about NY, their jobs, their routine, how was Nicole Herman. Mostly about medicine, in a way or another. Unexpectedly, Arizona changed the subject.
"And how is your love life? I heard you're no longer with your baby's father, right? What's his name again?" – Arizona asked.
"Link. Yes, we broke up almost 2 years ago now. But we're fine. I mean, we're friends. Sort of" – Amelia answered, a little unsure of how she should name her relationship with Link.
"That's good. I mean, in the end, that's all that matters. You're connected forever, so it's better if it's a good connection, right?" – Arizona said.
"Yes, for sure. And how about you and Callie?" – Amelia asked, now sounding more interested, while she looked straight at Arizona's eyes.
"We're friends, too. I don't know. Maybe distant friends, you know? But definitely not in a war" – Arizona joked.
"I thought you guys got back together after you left Seattle" – Amelia said.
"We've tried, but it didn't work out. We had unresolved feelings for each other but we actually didn't feel attracted anymore. We were just two parents sleeping together in the same bed, wishing we were having sex with somebody else" – Arizona confessed.
"And who was is it?" – Amelia asked.
"Who?" – Arizona looked confused.
"The "somebody else" you wish you were sleeping with" – Amelia said.
"Actually, there wasn't anybody specific. That's the saddest part. I literally would rather sleep with anybody else than Callie" – Arizona confessed, feeling a little tipsy after her third glass of wine – "Maybe I'm talking too much"
"No, please! C'mon. We're friends, right? We can blurt out about these things" – Amelia answered, smiling, and touching Arizona's hand.
"And what about you? Are you in a relationship right now?" – Arizona asked.
"I was until a few weeks ago. Not anymore" – Amelia answered without looking Arizona in the eyes.
"Ouch. Bad breakup?" – Arizona asked.
"Oh, yes. Horrible" – Amelia laughed.
"Is it someone I know?" – Arizona was intrigued.
"No. I don't think so. They're from Minnesota" – Amelia said, now staring at Arizona.
"They?" – Arizona was surprised – "As in a non-binary or were you in a polyamorous relationship?"
"Non-binary, please. I barely can be in a relationship with just one partner" – Amelia joked.
"Wow!" – Arizona sounded surprised.
"What? Why are you so surprised?" – Amelia asked.
"I'm not. Actually, I am, but in a good way. I've seen you with Owen for most of the time we've known each other. I didn't expected you to date someone non-binary" – Arizona said.
"Well, it was unexpected, but natural, you know? I mean, it was great to explore a completely new world of possibilities. I just chose the wrong one to do that with" – Amelia confessed.
"What happened? I mean, if you feel comfortable to talk about it. I'm sorry, didn't mean to intrude" – Arizona asked.
"It's ok, don't worry. I've found out they were cheating on me. I don't know how many times it happened and how many women besides the one I've found out about" – Amelia answered.
"I'm sorry, Amelia" – Arizona said. Cheating was something still uncomfortable for Arizona. Her cheating episode was something she still regrets, to this day.
"I mean, that wasn't the only reason, to be honest. We were growing apart, living in different cities. It's expected that we give in to our desires. What really upsets me was how dishonest they were, making me feel like I wasn't doing enough for us" – Amelia shared her feelings.
"Well, dishonesty is something that breaks all kinds of trust. I can speak for myself" – Arizona confessed.
"I'm sorry, I didn't want you to feel bad over this subject" – Amelia apologized.
"You don't need to be sorry. I am the one responsible for these consequences. But it's in the past now. Let's focus on you" – Arizona said.
"I think I need a break from love. Maybe it's not for me, after all" – Amelia said, with a sad voice.
"Don't say that. Anyone would be so lucky to be able to love you. And being loved by you. You're just hurt, it's normal. It's expected. It will pass" – Arizona smiled.
"You're kind. Thanks, Arizona. And what about you? Now that you and Callie are separated for good" – Amelia asked.
"No one interesting. I think I'm getting old" – Arizona confessed.
"Stop this bullshit. You're not old at all" – Amelia exclaimed.
"I feel old. It might be the wine talking, but most of the times I can't see myself as I used to" – Arizona said.
"And how was it?" – Amelia asked
"Well… hot. Sexy. Interesting. Desirable" – Arizona listed.
"Well, you're all of that. 100%. And it's not the wine talking for me" – Amelia said and got up from her seat – "I'm going to the toilet and be right back".
