Failure

Written by Doggiegal

The Secret Area, as it was called despite the fact that everyone knew of it, was in retrospect an awkward place for an instructor to meet her student. All right, ex-instructor, but the point still stands. She knew she was forcing him somewhat out of his comfort zone, but she was dying to tell him what she considered both good and bad news. Good because it had the potential to bring them closer together, bad because it meant the end of her favorite job. She figured that the good would outweigh the bad in this situation.

Partially out of nervousness and partially to build dramatic tension, she waited silently for a short while before informing him of her demotion. No longer an instructor, but a SeeD just like him. There was nothing between them now, she thought with glee. But he turned away, uncaring, telling her to talk to a wall, walking away. She felt her heart shatter and sink into the depths of her stomach. 'A stranger could get through to Squall Leonhart and get him to dance,' Quistis thought bitterly, 'but he can't even spare me a kindly word.'

She stood there for a moment, trying to put a spin on the events of the night so they wouldn't hurt so much. Maybe he had had a bad day? Maybe the girl was a long-lost relative or something? She was willing to believe anything that left room for the hope that Squall cared for her, too. Failing as an instructor, that much she could handle. Failing to win over Squall…well, that was a different story.

AN: It's short, mostly 'cause it was meant to be that way, and the other part is because I didn't feel like embellishing it. Just a small piece on Quistis in regards to the Secret Area scene.
