When she first saw him, she knew she was in love.
He was tall, dark and strong. It also helped that he could fill out those leather pants so wonderfully.
More than that, he knew what he wanted. Oh, he might have claimed he wanted to protect the weak and helpless in the night. Oh, she had thought he was a poser then.
That was when the nazi bastards showed up.
It was clear that they wanted a throw down, from the explosion to the smack talk like some kind of over-dramatized wrestling show. Grue had replied in equal form... tearing the nazi a new asshole before charging their leader.
While she couldn't SEE much of the actual fight thanks to the shadows. What she heard, and what the end result was... that was clear enough. He might have been a young ward, someone her age or possibly older... but he had taken down an experienced cape without harming anyone and had taken only minor injuries.
That was when she knew that it was love and not lust for that ass in those tight leather pants. Although, it helped.
He was bad-ass, he talked the talk and walked the walk.
And that was enough for her.
She studied him on the internet, in the newspapers, from the interviews he gave to the magazines and on TV. She cut out his articles and photos from magazines and newspapers and stuck them to her wall. No, there was a hottie for her and she knew it.
It wasn't healthy, her mom, had said to fixate on that no good cape. But, really, there was nothing wrong with following the career of an up and coming hero like Grue. To imagine what it would be like to work beside him.
To date him.
Absolutely nothing wrong. And it wasn't like she was the only one who had a thing for him at school, which made it in fact perfectly natural.
More than that, she saved up money.
Her first purchase went towards a hockey mask that she painted black. Her costume was a work in progress. A simple black mask, a black jacket that she had been about to throw out and a pair of black jeans.
She had naturally targeted the weak and stupid first, because she needed to practice her skills, learn how to fight. And she slowly got better.
She learned to account for her power when dodging, learned to take down Merchant punks.
More than that, with victory came loot. Drugs, she dumped in the garbage bins. Money... ah, that she kept. After all, money was useful.
And with the money she gained... there came the little upgrades, hockey armor that she painted a matte black. Black khaki pants, long sleeve turtle necks to wear beneath the armor. More than that, she got a hooded cape from the halloween store.
She naturally dyed it black from the pristine white it had been originally.
With each weekend, she stalked the streets of Brockton Bay. Slowly getting more and more experienced and equipped.
Even as she carefully spent the loot that she had gained on her outfit.
And for her prized item... the crossbow and bolts that she had told the shopkeeper she was going to use hunting in the mountains to the north.
There had also been a little something extra that she concealed even more than her costume and weapon. Like Mister Grue-inator "Too Tough for the Wolf, But Gentle Enough for the Ladies". She had bought it when she saw it at the Market. An impulse purchase, to be sure... and it likely wasn't an official Grue merchandise, more something taking advantage of his name.
And yet, how could she not buy it?
It was also an item that she hadn't dared use for fear of catching the attention of her mom, or worse Terry finding out and telling mom.
But that thing was just the start of it all, as more official merchandise showed up... posters, shirts, and even panties and boxers... she bought them all up.
Soon, she found herself hunting Merchant scum to support her habit of Grue merchandise.
