Hey guys, this is going to be the last of the battle. It all comes down to this! Who will win? Who will lose? And who is going to die? Wait...someone is going to DIE! Holy Cow! Anyway I want to thank all of those who gave me suggestions. Also things are getting better as well. Stormaster your suggestion was really good! I appreciate it! Sorry I haven't been able to update. I've had a busy last couple of weeks with school events and stuff that I haven't had much time to just sit down and write. I know I keep saying this story is almost done so please be patient with me. And I promise that the next chapter is going to be full of Percabeth, which I haven't given a lot of time for.
And warning it may get sad.
Disclaimer I don't own Percy Jackson, all rights belong to Rick Riordan.
To say that Calypso was terrified was an understatement. Leo planned to go up against Gaea alone. He was a fool! Calypso wanted to scream at him. There was only one way they could even hope to defeat the Earth goddess. She was the only one with the power to force Gaea from the island. Calypso just wondered if she had the courage.
Her heart thundered loudly in her chest as Leo scrambled around trying to avoid the falling globs of Earth. It would only take one hit to burry the poor boy alive. Each time one of Gaea's attacks hit the ground the Earth would tremor. Calypso could see all of the other demigods were struggling to remain up right and calling for Leo. She knew she had only moments before Gaea's aim stayed true.
Calypso knew what she had to do.
She ran as fast as she could towards Leo. He had yet to notice her, which was a good thing considering that she didn't want him distracted from avoiding Gaea's attacks. Just beneath the surface of her skin Calypso could feel her true power bubbling. She hadn't used it in years, in fact she never truly tapped her true potential when she could freely. Calypso had always been the one who didn't choose to fight, at least not when she could help it.
It almost felt as if electricity was rushing through her. Her skin felt as if it were becoming warmer and she could faintly feel the golden hue of her powers surrounding her. The waves began crashing violently onto the beach and the wind around her began to pick up. She almost lost focus because it frighten her so much, but her thoughts of Leo's safety helped her remain brave. He needed her. He was her friend. She could ignore the molten Earth around her, ignore the pounding in her chest, ignore the fact that death was inevitable.
She heard Percy shouting at her, something about her putting herself in danger. Always the noble one, he cared for her even after all the pain she had put him through. Calypso knew if it weren't for Annabeth clutching his arm in a vice grip, Percy would be jumping into the action to help her save Leo. Even if she wanted the help of the demigods, she had no right to ask. This was the only way she could save them.
Even if it was temporary, at least she could give them refuge.
"Ahhh-." Leo's cry of surprise brought her from her musing.
Gaea's last attack had been so close it sent the boy tumbling off of his feet. Her power began to increase ten fold, she barely noticed that the others were looking away from her. She knew that she was close to reaching her true form, even at that she still wondered if she even had a chance of banishing the other goddess from the island. Even with her fears still chasing her, Calypso put herself between Leo and the on coming attack from Gaea.
Though she felt the blow from the mass of Earth that hit her, Calypso wasn't too fazed by it, being so close to her true form she felt almost invinceable. Her powers made the attack part in the middle and fly harmlessly past her and Leo. Calypso tried to ignore Leo's heavy breathing behind her and focus on the goddess towering above. The Earth goddess had taken so much in the short time she had been awakened. She wasn't going to stop until the whole world became nothing but ruins, the same state in which she had put Calypso's home in.
The latter thought put rage in the daughter of Atlas's heart.
"I will not allow you to harm my friends any longer!" Calypso shouted.
Calypso's grandmother blinked, suddenly noticing the nymph's place in front of her target. The mixture of fear and courage continued to bubble in Calypso's stomach. She fought down the raw terror that was begging her to just give up. All the voices yelling at her, reminding her that she was not a fighter. Gaea finally regained composure and laughed hollowly.
"You really believe you can defeat me?"
With a flick of her wrist Gaea made the Earth move almost as if it were water and she sent both Calypso and Leo flying backwards. Leo reached out for Calypso mid flight and managed to pull her close despite the fact he never once opened his eyes. He protected her as they landed, the sea-nymph winced as he grunted in pain. She was supposed to be protecting him this time. Leo cursed in another language as he released her.
"I told you to stay." He muttered while still avoiding looking at her in her true form.
She couldn't help but smirk bitterly, "There is nothing you can do alone to save everyone, you're just one mortal."
"What are you going to do?" Leo demanded. "You're in you true form. I'm guessing you're not retaining that soon-to-be-bride glow."
Calypso tried to ignore the fact her heart still felt painful at the thought of her would-be wedding. It didn't matter at the moment though, she needed to go against Gaea. With a long sigh she brought her thoughts to the ocean around her, she was a sea nymph after all. It didn't matter if she was no child of Poseidon, she could still bend the water to her will. Though her concentration was fragile Calypso took the energy from the water and used it to grow in size. Her golden form gave way to a much taller version of herself.
From her new height Calypso could see the true extent of the damage that Gaea had caused to the once beautiful oasis. Trees were toppled over, sticking from the ground by their roots, long unnatural rivers of lava flowed through the land, and many plants had caught on fire. With a scowl that would rival her fathers Calypso walked to the equally as tall Gaea. The other goddess almost looked, afraid.
"You're not a fighter." Gaea shouted. "This is impossible."
"We're goddesses." Calypso sneered back as she sent a blast of water in Gaea's face and sent her grandmother's head snapping backwards. "Everything we do is impossible. I am done letting you manipulate me, done letting you hurt my friends, done with all of the damage you've brought to my home."
The one down side to fighting when she was a giant was worrying over her friends. Calypso was grateful that they seemed to be trying to regroup at a safer distance, even Leo had managed to catch up with the other demigods. The daughter of Atlas's attention was brought back to the fight when Gaea hit her with a mound of molten rock. Calypso screamed as the fire like substance hit her in the face and seared her skin. She wasn't use to such abuse, but Calypso refused to let the blow deter her.
"You know the only way to banish me from your home is to force me away." Gaea reminded her in the condescending voice that made Calypso think of her sisters. "Do you really think your strong enough to send me away?"
Calypso thought about all of the times people had thought her weak and docile. She couldn't help it if she felt less than optimistic about her chances, but she wasn't about to play the damsel any longer. The nymph summoned water from the ocean and commanded it to move, almost like a snake, and wrap Gaea in a vice grip. The Earth goddess cried out in pain as the water continued to constrict her. Gaea managed to send a pained, hate-filled glare towards Calypso.
Calypso tried to ignore how wrong it felt for her to use her powers to hurt someone, no matter how evil, "I can only try"
"You will lose." Gaea let her body crumble into nothing but dust.
Calypso released her control over the water and searched for where the goddess would appear. She was surprised as the Earth under her formed a fist and flew into her chin. With a cry she fell backwards and crushed the only flora that had managed to survive Gaea's initial attack. The goddess reformed in front of her and smiled darkly. Calypso watched her advisory warily and ran her wrist along the corner of her mouth to wipe away some of the ichor that Gaea's hit had brought up.
There battle was a constant back and forth. Each blow they traded made them each more and more exhausted. Calypso knew that something had to give, hopefully the thing to give would be Gaea. With all the cuts, bruises, and burns she had gotten, Calypso was sure she was unrecognizable. She wasn't sure how much longer she would be able to keep up with Gaea.
And suddenly she didn't have to.
Calypso had hit Gaea with the most powerful attack she had conjured through their whole battle. Calypso had been lucky that the older goddess had already exhausted herself before their battle. Gaea's form crumbled apart, not fluidly like before, instead it was as if she were a drying sand castle. At the same moment Calypso let her body return to its original size as well. Gaea was gasping and struggling as she struggling to rise from her hands and knees.
"I cannot lose..." Gaea sputtered as she tried to crawl away. Calypso watched on almost sadly as her grandmother struggled to gather her energy.
"But you have." Calypso told her and with a wave of her hand used most of her remaining energy to repair her whole island. "And you've over stayed your welcome. Leave my home."
Gaea let out a heavy huff of air, still seeming too exhausted to fight any longer, "Fine, fine I will leave."
With a final nod Calypso left the Earth goddess to meet up with Leo and the other demigods. She could almost see the tan boy smile as he ran towards her with he others following close behind. Calypso didn't hesitate to wrap her arms around him as soon as he was within her reach. He fell backwards onto the ground and she on top of him. Their lips hovered just inches apart.
Leo's face lit up brightly and she couldn't help but laugh at his bashfulness. Her giggles seemed to calm him as he cupped her face with his hands. She almost kissed him to satisfy the part of her that was screaming at her to, but then just as suddenly the voices of the other demigods brought her out of the trance.
"You did it Calypso!" Percy shouted. She reached up and he helped her to her feet.
Calypso was glad to see that he and the others were relatively unharmed. Two of the girls were leaning against their boyfriends. Percy and Annabeth just stood and held hands not seeming to badly injured. Calypso's jealousy had died down because she knew Percy was never going to be hers. Despite Annabeth's skeptical glance she couldn't help but feel happy that they were finally back together.
It would have been sooner if the sea nymph had been stronger willed.
"Yes, I did..." Calypso could feel her guilt catching up to her. "I am so sorry Percy. For all of this."
He shrugged. "I should have helped you sooner. I should have made sure they let you go when they gave me their word."
"I blame you for none of this." She told the demigod. "I am just glad that I was able to fix my mistake before any of you got hurt."
"Well, you may be wrong about that." Gaea laughed. Calypso spun on her heel to look at the goddess. Gaea stood shakily on her feet with the spear from the spear gun. She felt stupid that she hadn't made sure Gaea had left before turning her back.
"Where'd you get that?"
The Earth goddess grinned like the devil, "Found it. You really should be more careful to make sure there isn't any type of weapon around for your opponent to take advantage of."
Calypso could sense the demigods tense behind her, prepareing for one last fight. Despite the fact that the gun was no longer with the spear the daughter of Atlas knew that Gaea could just as easily send it flying at a more powerful speed than the weapon. Even more terrifying was the energy she was enveloping the object with. Calypso needed to show no mercy this time and force Gaea away with her powers. She let her remaining energy flow to her fingers. To her it almost sounded like she had static collecting in her hands.
"I told you to LEAVE!" Calypso shouted as she let her remaining energy fly towards the goddess.
Unfortunately Gaea threw the hotly glowing spear just before Calypso's attack hit her and she disappeared. Calypso had no time to smile at her victory, she couldn't let the spear hit its target. She fearlessly put herself between the spear and the demigod in the nick of time. And that's when she finally smiled in relief. She had saved them all.
When the spear initially hit, she hadn't felt any pain. In fact, it only felt like someone had pushed her. Calypso looked down at the black metal that stuck out from her body. Just looking down made her feel dizzy. She faintly could hear her friends screaming in shock. Finally her knees gave out and she fell onto the lush green grass that was a part of her home. Calypso wanted to curl up and sleep in the sun.
Maybe her body would warm up if she just rested under the watchful eyes of Apollo.
Just as she started collapsing onto her side a pair of strong and calloused hands grabbed her and eased her down. She looked up at the figure. Was it Hephaestus? Had he come to see her after so long? Tears came to her eyes as she reached for the side of his face. Her fingers were meet with sweaty and smooth skin, but Hephaestus had a beard. Calypso blinked and it was instead Leo.
When she saw the look on his face her tears finally fell "Oh, Leo."
"How could you be so stupid?" He demanded as he gently squeezed her shoulders. "Why would you do that? You...you..."
"Saved you." She told him as she let her fingers wipe away his stray tears.
"She's immortal." The daughter of Aphrodite pointed out. "She can heal right?"
"I'm afraid..." Calypso smiled gently, never looking away from Leo. "It isn't that simple."
"You're fading." Percy's voice was dull. "But I thought that you had to lose believers to do that."
Calypso looked at the sea god's son and smiled at him. He looked almost like a fragile piece of glass, but Annabeth gave him a hug as if to console him. She watched as his face disappeared into the blonde's shoulder. Calypso was amazed that he was concerned for her even after all he's been through because of her.
"What does that mean?" Leo demanded and he regained her attention. "Gods and goddess can't die!"
"Leo, I have used up all of my energy." Calypso told him in a soft voice. "And I don't have many believers anyway, so it was only a matter of time."
"Your name is everywhere." Leo told her desperately. "You are in bars, and restaurants, and movies...and..."
"I am only a name to the mortals."
The boy shook his head, "Not to me Calypso. Why are you giving up? What about your happy ending?"
Calypso could feel herself becoming weaker and weaker. Almost as if she were mortal. The world around her was becoming nothing but a blur, everything except for Leo who was still dominate in her vision. She felt herself grin at him. Why hadn't she realized how sweet he was before? Calypso raised her lips as close to his ear as possible.
"I was never meant to have a happy ending."
Calypso wanted to say more but she felt herself choking for air. Ichor rose in her throat, she could feel her whole body becoming painfully numb. The nymph wanted to tell Leo how she felt about him. Apologize for every cruel thing she had said and done, but she couldn't. Her chance was gone.
And so was she...
Leo's Pov...
Leo sat in disbelief as Calypso went limp in his arms. Just as suddenly as she left him he began shaking her. Screaming until his voice became horse for her to come back. His friends didn't try to stop him. Leo could hear them crying, but he didn't think they knew her enough to feel his pain.
"Calypso!" He sobbed and sobbed as he pulled her closer.
She left him, she died because of him, just like his mom. Leo knew it! He was never meant to be loved. Everyone who loved him died. He could still smell the cinnamon coming from Calypso's hair, feel her warmth against his.
"Why didn't you let me die?" He asked her as he set her head on his lap. "You should have let me die."
Slowly Leo moved her head onto the ground and he began to sooth her beautiful hair from her face. He didn't want her looking so disheveled in death. Leo smiled as he thought about when he had first met Calypso. She didn't like him very much and he wasn't sure how he felt about her either, but some how the nymph had managed to capture his heart in a way that no other girl had ever before.
Calypso's body just laid on the ground, peacefully. And to Leo's surprise she began to glow. It was different to her true form. The glow was not as bright or as deadly. His heart leapt into his throat as she began to disappear. Leo reached out trying to stop her from fading away forever, but his hands just passed through her. There was nothing he could do.
The spear fell to the ground and Calypso's body was gone. In its place was a Moonlace, but it was very odd. It's pedals were a fiery orange and they opened up freely for the sun, unlike the cream colored ones that were usually found on the island. They only opened for the moon. Leo's fingers brushed the flower.
"Calypso?" He breathed.
Okay. I hope you liked it. I know it is not very action packed, but it gets kind of repetitive when you are trying to write a fighting scene. Anyway I hope you liked it and sorry I didn't update sooner. Please tell me what you think. I even did the one thing I've sworn I'd never do and put two Point of views in one chapter. Did I do well? If Calypso's thoughts do get confusing after she is stabbed it's because she is dyeing.
