Chapter 23.
May 3rd, 1984.
Thursday.
"Now!" Announced Bak into the microphone.
Which is held closely towards his smirking face as his loud booming voice echoed all throughout the already loud, and chaotic bar.
"Static Impulse gives you the freshest band this bar had to offer…The Exorcists!" Bak announced with faked enthusiasm as he gestured towards the black curtain behind him with a sweep of his arms, before quickly taking his leave off the stage.
The loud clapping and cheering from the entire crowd started up ten-fold in volume as the curtain started rising.
All the band members held their breath as the dark curtain was raised, and they were then unveiled for the entire audience to see as the bar room erupted into a fit of cheers and loud wolf whistles.
"Well…This is certainly a nice welcome." Allen stated quietly from over his shoulder, smiling with barely contained enthusiasm at Lenalee beside him.
Who giggled happily into her microphone as she waited for the crowd to settle into a hushed silence.
Lavi was still bouncing up and down behind his drum set, grin plastered across his face as he sat behind his drums eagerly.
And Kanda stared down at Mugen in his hands, with oddly focused concentration, and looked as though he was reluctant to look up and meet the eyes of the audience before the stage.
Allen then waved to the crowd and pulled the microphone closer towards his grinning face from behind his synthesizer. "Well hello there, ladies and gentlemen!" He shouted into the mic.
Getting hollers and clapping from the fans, before they all settled into silence once again.
"I'm gonna get right into the introductions before we start anything, yes?" Allen asked, pausing for the sake that he had to give the audience another dazzling smile. "Everyone meet our bass player! Lenalee! The girl that can kick your arse with an adorable smile on her face!" He introduced enthusiastically as he gesutred towards Lenalee..
Who gave the crowd a teasing sneer, before she giggled into the microphone and waved her hands towards the audience.
"And the red-head behind me is our drummer! Lavi!" Allen shouted, gesturing towards Lavi who is situated behind him.
The crowd—mostly girls—were soon heard shouting and squealing as Lavi got up from behind his set, in order to give the girls his trademark "I-know-you-want-me" smirk.
Which got him a discreet eye-roll from Allen with that overconfident action. "And the grump beside me to my left, is our lead guitar player! Kanda!" Allen cheerfully introduced into the microphone as he gestured towards Kanda beside him. "The guy that can just…Kick your arse with no remorse." He announced with a small discontented sigh.
And to that statement, the crowd hushed.
One poor guy did clap, but only long enough to get himself whacked up-side the head by his buddy behind him.
"Aww..." Droned Lavi into the microphone situated by his head, which caused everyone to turn their attention towards him. "Poor wittle Yuu hardly got any snaps." He stated in a teasing tone with a coy smile on his face.
To that teasing quip, loud guffaws and laughter was soon heard coming from the people beyond the stage, followed by loud slamming of empty beer mugs banging against tables.
"Fuck you, poser." Kanda harshly spat into the microphone in front of him.
Momentarily surprising Allen that he had actually used the microphone—which was otherwise forgotten about in the past in front of him.
"Who needs fuckin' recognition?" Kanda barked into the microphone. "Like that proves anything." He scoffed, continuing to surprise Allen unwittingly. "I'm playing my guitar whether they like me or not, and they can fuckin' suck it!—"
At that he surprised everyone when he thrust his hips, and his Mugen forward, with the action.
"—if they don't!" Kanda stated heatedly into the microphone as he cast glaring eyes at the silent crowd before him from up on stage.
The band, including Bak, held their breath for the worse.
But to that, everyone only cheered loudly and whistled for more, people still choosing to slam their empty beer bottles on the tables with vigor, as though they agree entirely to what he had said.
"I'll suck it anytime for you hotty!" A girl shouted from within the crowd. Getting many applause and wolf-whistles with the statement.
Which had seemed to only anger Kanda further as he grumbled heatedly under his breath.
Allen was only thankful that Kanda had pulled his head away from the microphone before he had started insulting the audience crowded around the stage by their feet.
Allen then smiled happily and pulled the microphone back towards his face. "NOW! Everyone came here to party! Let's give them music to rock!" Allen yelled into the microphone confidently.
The audience cheered once last time before they all slowly fell into eager silence as soon as Lavi raised both his drum sticks into the air above his red-head.
"We'll first kick it off with a Foreigner cover," Allen announced. "This song is called Feels Like The First Time!" He hollered exuberantly into the microphone.
His personality going from "Innocent Allen" to stage performer "Rock Star Allen" in a split second.
Momentarily flicking his dark blue eyes towards Lavi, Kanda then looked back down to his Mugen and started an upbeat tempo with his guitar, striking down onto each of Mugen's taut strings for the intro of the song, then after the first measure of guitar playing, Allen started playing his synthesizer, hitting each key with précised precision in unison with Kanda's guitar playing, and that's when Lavi started his smooth bass kick, rhythmically hitting his drums and cymbals in a delightful progression. Lenalee's heavy bass playing started flowing rhythmically out of the amplifier by the heels of her black boots with each bass kick from Lavi.
After the intro, Allen started singing without hesitation.
"I would climb any mountain…" He sang, smiling happily as he stilled his synth playing, the only instrument being heard was Lavi's rhythmic drumming.
"Sail across the stormy sea," Allen melodically raised his voice.
"If that's what it takes me, baby,
To show how much you mean to me!" He sang harmoniously into the microphone, voice still strong as the band turned up their instrument playing, getting ready for the chorus.
"And I guess it's just the woman in you,
That brings out the man in me." Allen started getting a bit more confident as the song progressed. "I know I can't help myself!
You're all in the world to me!" He raised his voice, fully knowing the chorus is about to begin.
"It Feels Like The First Time!
Feels like the very first time!" He kept his voice in tune with Lenalee and Lavi's background singing. "It Feels Like The First Time!
It Feels like the very first time!" The three sang in unison, Allen's pitch a bit higher in key.
"I had waited a lifetime," He dropped his voice back to that melodic note.
"Spent my time so foolishly…"
Kanda struck down on Mugen just as Allen raised his voice.
"But now that I found you,
Together we'll make history…!" Allen sang with a wide grin.
Lavi started a heavy drum beat soon after.
"And I know it must be the woman in you,
That brings out the man in me…!" Allen sung deeply. Drummer and Bass player still singing wonderfully in the background.
"I know I can't help myself!
You're all my eyes can see!" Allen raised his voice.
The bands instrument playing soon died down in volume, allowing their lead-singer to take full reigns of the instrumental piece with his synthesizer. This was done rather metrically—if Allen did say so himself—all the while playing his synth without having to look down at his hands, keeping his eyes focused on the crowd before him.
"And it Feels Like The First Time,
Like it never did before...
Feels Like The First Time,
Like we opened up the door…!" He then raised his voice in volume.
"Feels Like The First Time,
Like it never will agaaain!" Allen held that note three seconds longer. "No-oh! Yeah!" He wailed into the microphone.
The band once again started up their instrument playing without missing a beat. Kanda pulled his Mugen closer towards his body, fully knowing his guitar solo is coming up next as soon as Allen was done singing the next lyrics of the song. His facial expression serious as his fingers flexed and ran all along Mugen's fret board.
"Oh it Feels Like The First Time!
It Feels like the very first time!" Allen finished singing the chorus, looking expectantly towards Kanda.
Kanda raised his guitar's slow rhythmic tempo into an all-out guitar solo as Lavi only continued to raise hell on his drum set. The bass kick loud, but that was still nothing compared to Kanda's maliciously raging guitar solo, his fingers all but a blur to the stunned and gawking eyes of the many people witnessing the performance beyond the stage.
"Won't you open up the door…!?" Allen's voice thundered through the amplifiers, stunning the already gaping audience further with just the sheer power of his vocals.
Things started slowing down in tempo by help of Lavi's drum playing, which seemed to break the chaotic pace of the song, his bass drum is what soon got the song going into a more relaxed pace as before.
'And it Feels Like The First Time!
Feels like the very first time…!" Allen, Lenalee, and Lavi all sang in unison. Allen's voice still being stronger of the two.
"Oh it feels!
Yeah!
It Feels Like The First Tiiime! Yeaahh!" Allen sang loudly, holding that note a few seconds longer.
The lyric of the song he last sang, was the last one he'll sing, because that's when the music starting slowing down in pace, the beat getting more heavier and losing the speed that it once had, with each bass kick coming from Lavi. Who blended his cymbals perfectly with each reverberating plunk of Lenalee's bass.
And when Lavi started slowing things down with his drums, Kanda's guitar playing was also getting more slower in speed, the song progressing towards the outro of the song. The song that they had played so professionally, was now almost over, much to the bands chagrin.
Allen played a fast, delightful sounding melody upon his synthesizer, before Lavi struck down on both his cymbals hard. Indicating that the song was now over, and all their instruments stopped in complete unity to one another.
A hush fell upon the bemused crowd, until they all seemed to erupt in a fit of roars and applause all at the same time when they finally took notice that the song has ended.
The crowd roared for "more" and some even went so far as to push many others out of their way all in order to get closer towards the band up on the stage. Still continuing to cheer and rant their approvals to the four young, and surprisingly very talented, individuals up on stage.
Allen was stunned. That was only their first song.
He thought the crowd wouldn't even bother listening to them play, especially when it's only a cover of a song from a band that originated from the 70's, and considering that they are only the opening act for a much bigger performance.
But he was proven wrong, when the crowd starting chanting their names. Or to be more specific, they starting chanting for the: "Exorcists!"
Allen looked over his shoulder, large grin directed at each of his band mates as he then nodded his head in approval. That's all the validation he needed to hear to know that he was now going to do what he does best for the rest of their performance. Entertain and rock.
"Let's give 'em some more!" The white-haired teenager shouted into the microphone.
The crowded bar room then starting hollering their appreciation at the request.
Turning to the band, he nodded his pure white head at his friends.
"Solid! Let's rock 'em baby!" Lavi hollered into his microphone, smashing his cymbals above his head.
Bak Chan, who stood in the far back of his crowded bar, folded his arms over his stomach and continued to listen closely to the band playing on his stage.
The band known as: "The Exorcists." A band containing four teenagers, believe it or not.
He could hear the murmured and eager voices of the throng of people around him, silently they were applauding and appraising the band for their performance.
And Bak couldn't believe it, the band was only on their second song, but the audience were already cheering for more out of the band.
He had a feeling that this band had something in the past—two weeks and five days back to be exact—but who knew, that they would take all of his advice, and take a step beyond his expectations?
He didn't know what he was getting himself into when he first listened to the band. He didn't think that the band could actually play, let alone actually take his advice about "Band Dynamics" but now he did, and he had to smirk triumphantly at himself.
What could I do, to make them even bigger than what they are now? He found himself wondering.
May 4th, 1984
Friday.
It is now midnight at the bar of Static Impulse, and Allen couldn't have been happier, because after the killer performance they did, the young white-haired teenager felt as though he could take on anything that came his way.
"Whew!" Allen huffed, backdoor closing behind him swiftly, hair flying into his smiling face with the fast slam of the door. "Bloody hell man! That was fur shur a brilliant performance we did back there!" He stated excitedly, clapping his gloved hands all the while. "World-class…" He said, sighing wistfully at the memory.
Kanda grumbled something unintelligible at the over-joyed runt beside him and pulled out a blunt—that he had been saving just for this occasion—from within the back pocket of his jeans.
"Why did you follow me anyways?" Kanda grumbled, sending a cold stare at Allen. "I can't understand Jack-shit when you say Brit-gibberish."
Allen pursed his lip in a small pout. "Came to make sure that you don't keel over and die on the marijuana you're about to puff on." He rebuked, clicking his tongue and crossing his arms. "You can thank me later when I save your sorry arse." He said, blowing a strand of white-bang away from his eye.
Kanda huffed in annoyance and pulled the joint up to his lips, using his free hand to dig around inside both his pockets for his lighter. He knew he had one some where, but now he found none.
It must've fell out when I finished the guitar solo...Kanda idly thought. Hissing a curse under his breath, he flicked his eyes expectantly over to Allen.
Who's staring out into the distance in front of them both with a bored expression plastered across his face.
"Hey, Euro-fag." Kanda called the white-haired teen.
Who turned his irritated expression towards Kanda. "What?" He barked.
"Got a lighter?" The guitarist asked, voice oddly calm despite his scowling visage.
Turning towards the guitar player with a delighted looking smile, Allen dug inside his tight jean pockets and pulled out a lighter. "Here you go Kan-duh." He announced exuberantly, holding out his lighter towards Kanda with a dazzling grin.
Just as Kanda was reaching for the pure black zippo lighter, Allen snatched it back.
Blinking, the long-haired male growled dangerously inside his throat and took a step forward, reaching for the lighter once again.
But Allen only swiped the lighter behind his back with a mischievous looking smile.
Kanda took an intimidating step forward, holding out his hand. "Gimme tha' fuckin' light, dick-brain!" Kanda snarled threateningly, finally losing his patience.
Which—in Allen's opinion—was lost a long time ago.
"Not a chance!" Allen countered, sticking out his tongue at the disgruntled face of the guitar player. "You gotta say 'please and thank you' first!" He grinned, twirling the lighter around behind his back as he rocked back and forth on the heels of his black sneakers playfully.
"Bag your face. I ain't saying shit to you dweeb!"
"That not what I wanna heeeear!" Allen sang happily, kicking the toe of his shoe on the cement.
"Get bent poser!"
"At least say please!" Allen huffed.
"Give me tha fuckin'—!"
Just as Kanda reached towards Allen, having every intention of whirling the teenager around to grab the lighter, the backdoor to the bar swung open wide and out-stepped a tall man who wore dark shades pulled right over his eyes as wavy dark hair hung messily around his face.
Allen stopped his teasing instantly when the backdoor opened and he couldn't help but narrow his eyes suspiciously at the mysterious hooded figure that just walked out of the bar.
Warily watching as the tall man leaned his back against the brick wall of the bar, and even as he breathed out a heavy sigh from his frowning lips.
"Hah!" Kanda shouted loudly in triumph, successfully managing to snatch the lighter away from behind the white-haired runts back.
Immediately he lit the joint hanging limply from his scowling lips and took a good long—and well deserved—drag. Then practically threw the lighter at the teenager's bewildered looking face with a dark glare.
"Next time, I'm kicking you in your Barney looking face if you do that shit again, zeek." Kanda threatened wholeheartedly, smirking when he managed to grab the lead-singer's attention once again.
Allen visibly pouted at the guitar player and waved the lighter in the air. "Well, all you had to do was just say 'please' Kanda. Never know, maybe you might actually get what you want someday, by simply using those words." Allen chastised, sighing heavily in exasperation.
Kanda rolled his dark blue eyes and looked away, uncaring. "Whatever." He grumbled. "Bitchin' 'Breakfast Club' speech, geek. Fuckin' lamer." Kanda gave a suspicious sounding cough at the same time a smile threatened to pull at the corners of his lips.
Just as Allen opened his mouth to insult the long-haired teenager, a lithe, yet deep, melodic voice broke in.
"Do any of you guys have a lighter I can borrow?"
Allen flinched at the sudden question that came from the stranger leaning against the bricks of the wall, and flicked his grey eyes over to the figure. That man's voice sounds oddly familiar…He noted apprehensively.
Noticing that both the stranger's hands were pulled out of his pockets, one hand held a cigarette in between two fingers, while the other one is lying limply at the stranger-danger's side.
Quirking an eyebrow at the familiar—and creepy—looking man, Allen nodded his head. "I got one." He replied, waving the lighter in the air as if to prove it.
"Solid," The man purred. "I left mine inside." The stranger stated, voice sounding slightly embarrassed at admitting the truth.
Allen forced a smile on his face and strode towards the stranger on the other side of the door, across from where he and Kanda stood.
Now that Allen was closer to the man's side, he could clearly see that the man was no bum at all, or creepy looking, in fact Allen felt mildly obligated to compliment the man standing in front of him.
Because he was rather handsome looking.
What with his tanned skin, perfect facial structure that could make any God cry and a smile so mysterious and appealing to any eye, it actually made him want to—dare he say it?— talk to the stranger.
Allen cleared his throat as he held out his lighter. "Here you go." He said with a smile. "So what do you think of the band that's gonna play next?" He asked nonchalantly, still holding out the lighter happily.
The man smiled. "They seem alright." He answered casually.
"Uhm, right." Allen replied. Not really sure what else to say to that. So much for making small talk…He groaned inside his head.
The man smiled a toothy grin at him.
A smile that almost made Allen blind, what with the man's teeth being so straight and so shockingly white, that he felt a tad bit jealous that he himself couldn't get his teeth to shine as white as the man's teeth. Even though his teeth were already a nice shade of white.
I swear to the Lord above that I've seen this bugger before... Allen said inside his head. Trying to re-call all the previous strangers and acquaintances he has recently met.
The man pulled his un-lit cigarette to his lips with a small lop-sided smile and let it hang there. "If you don't mind, could you light it for me? I got a bump arm and can barely lift it. Let alone light a damn cigarette." The man chuckled at his own expense as he scratched underneath his hood.
Allen felt his skin prickle at the very thought. That would mean he would have to get even closer to the man, than he already was.
"Uhh…Sure…?" The teenager replied uneasily. Taking a step closer towards the man, until the toe of his shoe was almost touching the man's very own shoe, he flicked his lighter and instantly the flint sparked and out came the flame.
The man went closer towards the flame of the lighter and inhaled on the end of the cigarette until it was lit. All the while, keeping his eyes locked onto the white-haired British teenager concentrating in front of him.
Allen—oblivious to the staring of the man—snapped the lighter close to extinguish the flame and smiled ruefully at the man. "There you go." He announced jovially.
But just as he was about to pull his hand away, the stranger quickly reached out and held his arm in place in front of him.
Kanda bristled at the touch, but stayed glued to his place at the back-doors of the bar and continued to puff on his joint like a chimney—only because he didn't know what else to do at the moment.
Allen nearly jumped out of his skin at the touch. "H-hey man, I don't even know you, so…Do you mind…?" Allen trailed off, eyes glancing every which way around him.
Internally hoping that Kanda would jump in soon, to help him fend off this creepy stranger holding his arm hostage.
Or he was going to have to punch the guy in his handsome looking face, for pulling a rapist move like that.
The man only chuckled deeply and let the young teen go. "I'm sorry about that. I just thought you would be able to recognize who I am by now." The man stated, holding out both his hands in mock surrender. "Oh, and F.Y.I Brit." The man purred, "The band that just finished playing, was choice. I would be proud to have a band like that play for us." He answered, still smirking.
Allen narrowed his eyes. "All…Right…?" He answered uncertainly as he took a step back to assess the man. "You know me?" He questioned curiously. How in the bloody hell does EVERYONE know who I am? His mind shouted in frustration.
The man shrugged. "I know you. And I'm feelin' kinda snubbed that you don't remember me." The man smiled again.
Allen blinked, then blinked several times more and opened his mouth. "Oh my God it's you!" He nearly shouted, pointing straight at the man's smiling expression. "The male prostitute!" He announced in clear astonishment.
The man only gave the teen a sardonic stare as he silently puffed on his cigarette. "Uh…Yeah, I think you got me mixed-up with someone else kid." He huffed in annoyance.
The stranger then pulled down the hood covering over his head and pushed back his dark brown hair to better reveal his face.
And Allen nearly face palmed, only because he felt like a total idiot now. "Dear Lord! You're not a male prostitute! But it's you!" Allen gaped. "Tyki Mikk of The Noah's!" He shouted, taking several steps back in disbelief.
Tyki Mikk smiled. "Thanks for the introduction Brit." He replied seductively. "But can you keep it on the down-low? I'm trying to be inconspicuous here." Tyki announced, pulling his hood over his head once again as he ruffled his bangs over his face to further conceal himself.
Allen enthusiastically nodded his white-colored head. "Sure I can be quiet! But wow!" He continued with his excited, and rather loud, sounding tone. "You're Tyki Mikk! I met you before, but who knew that you could look like this!" He gestured to the lead-singers clothing. "Look Kanda! He looks like a bum!" He announced, grinning in delight as he looked back and forth between Tyki Mikk and the scowling guitar player.
Tyki's once happily smiling expression, quickly fell at that statement. "Thanks." He deadpanned, visibly pouting in offence. I look like a bum...? Tyki thought as he looked down and pinched the fabric of his clothing.
Kanda rolled his eyes passionately at the teenagers over-excited behavior and took a step forward towards the two. "Why do you look like a bum?" He asked acerbically. "Aren't you supposed to be, I don't know, fuckin' rich?" He yawned, before pulling the joint back to his lips.
Tyki flicked his golden eyes towards the long-haired male, who he remembered was the guitarist of their little band, and smirked haughtily at the glaring teenager. "I dress like this so none of my fans rip me to shreds, Yuu." He slowly pronounced the guitar players name, just to further piss off the already infuriated looking teenager.
Who started to visibly twitch in anger before him.
Kanda took an immediate step forward. "What—tha fuck—did you call me?" He seethed, eyes narrowing to dangerous slits as he took another step forward, joint dangling from his lips. "Nobody calls me that, if they know what—"
Allen quickly slapped a hand upon the guitarist taut shoulder blade and held him at bay. "Sorry!" He quickly replied, looking at Tyki. "This is Kanda, and he certainly doesn't like to be called by his first name. Not too sure why, but he doesn't." He grinned anxiously.
Further backing him and Kanda away from the smirking lead-singer.
Who only shrugged his shoulder casually. "My bad. I thought we were all friends here." He stated nonchalantly, flashing another dazzling smile at the shorter teen. "I should get going though. Bak is going to bite my fucking head off if I keep him waiting any longer." He rolled his eyes at that statement.
Butting his cigarette out, Tyki turned back towards the door. But before waltzing inside, the lead-singer turned back around and waved at the two teenagers.
But keeping his golden eyes locked onto one individual in particular. "I'll see you later Brit." Tyki announced, grinning at the confused looking teenager one last time, before finally taking his leave.
Allen could only gulp nervously at the grin he received and quickly averted his stunned looking eyes down to the cement flooring beneath him. There was something so totally off with how the man carries himself, that he just couldn't put his finger on it.
Technically, he didn't want to put his finger on it. He couldn't help but feel intimidated with the man when he was within Tyki Mikk's presence. Because, hell, Tyki Mikk was a famous lead-singer! Who knew what the man did on his spare time?
"Something is fucking wrong with that old man's head." Kanda stated bluntly as he shook his shoulders free of the white-haired teenager's hand. "Get off me." He ordered sternly.
Silent minutes pass, before...
"We should go back inside soon." Allen suddenly announced. "Lavi and Lenalee must be looking for us right about now." He stated with a flash of a nervous smile directed at Kanda, before silently walking his way towards the door.
He actually wanted to leave the bar altogether, for the sake of wanting to get away from Tyki as fast as he could, before the man could catch up with him and try talk to him again in that...Unusually perverse tone of voice.
Kanda harrumphed in what sounded like agreement and cracked his neck with a scowl pressed firm. "Whatev'." He deadpanned as he walked towards the door.
Pushing out of his way, only because he felt like it.
And there it is peoples!
