Hey hey, this is F. Just here to say that I'm not uncle Ricky and I don't own any of the characters/ places that you may recognize from the PJO and HoO series's. I only own Caspian and Ella. Okay, on with the show~
Caspian's POV~
"We may not have to wait long for you to be claimed by your godly parent." Chiron said. "Caspian, may I ask whether it is your mother or your father?"
"My dad must be a god, 'cause I knew my mom. And please, call me Casper." I said. I hoped that neither he nor Percy would ask any further about my past. My mom especially. I didn't want to talk about her and I knew that I could never ever tell anyone about my past. I had gotten nervous when Percy had asked about LA. He seemed like a nice guy, but I couldn't tell anyone. I had taken a big risk telling Ella, and I didn't want to drag anyone else into my mess.
"I see." Chiron frowned. "In that case, it might take a while for you to be claimed."
"What do you mean?" I asked. "Why?"
"Your satyr, Flint, sensed a particular scent around you-"
"Thanks." Percy, standing next to Chiron, tried to cover his laugh with a cough.
"Thats not what I meant." He scraped one of his front hooves on the porch nervously. I wondered why. "Casper, you are a daughter of a powerful god. A long time ago, after world war two, Hades, Zeus, and Poseidon, the three most powerful gods, swore that they would never again have demigod children. They didn't always succeed, of course-"
Percy grinned and raised his hand.
"Percy here, as well as Hazel Levesque, Jason Grace, and the son of Hades Nico di Angelo, are the exceptions. But children of the big three are still exceptionally rare."
"And you all think that I'm the child of one of those guys?"
"Yes. But," He added hurriedly. "We cannot be sure, so don't depend on it."
"Um, okay."
"Until you are claimed, you will have to stay in one of the extra rooms in the Big House. After the Giant War, we promised the Hermes cabin that only children of Hermes would stay there anymore, so you can't stay there."
A few minutes later, I was pushing open the door of a room on the second floor of the Big House. It was a small room, painted a sunny yellow color. The one window looked out over the entire camp, and was bordered by blue-and-pink floral curtains. There was a twin bed with a patchwork quilt spread over it.
I sat down on the edge of the bed nervously. I didn't have any stuff to unpack, except for my iron switchblade, which I hid in the drawer of the nightstand.
The next two weeks were among the funnest in my life. I took every one of the different classes. I knew that Percy, Annabeth, Chiron, and some of the other campers and counselors were watching me, trying to figure out who my father was.
I wasn't very good at most of the stuff. I was fast enough to be good in foot racing and I was a decent canoer, but archery? No way. I nearly killed an Apollo camper the first time I tried. Luckily he just thought it was funny, but I couldn't get any better no matter how hard I tried. Wrestling would have been good, but the Ares counselor, Clarisse, was really mean and though and she taught all of the wrestling classes. Annabeth taught me to read and write in Ancient Greek.
But the thing that really puzzled me was the swordfighting. When I had faced the hydra, I had been full a burst of manic energy and adrenaline, and I was moving without even having to think about it. But when I faced Percy with my sword, (Percy taught the sword fighting class) I just didn't know what to do, and I lost every time. I tried to remind myself that I was safe, thinking I would get better if I stayed calm, but that almost seemed to make me worse.
Nearly once or twice a day there would be a tiny earthquake. They never lasted more than a minute, but nobody could explain them.
One night, I stayed late at the campfire joking around with Ella. As I was walking back towards the Big House, I spotted figures talking in the dining pavilion. As I got closer, I could see that it was Percy, Jason, Hazel, Annabeth, Clarisse, Chiron, and a dark-haired boy named Nico that I had seen around camp with his boyfriend Will Solace.
I'm not an eavesdropper, but I stopped dead in my tracks when I heard my name.
"-Still not sure about Casper, sir." Jason was saying. "But I don't think so. She hasn't shown any of the signs, and she would have by now."
"Same here." Nico frowned. "She doesn't seem to have any powers similar to mine or that of Hazel."
"The earthquakes could be signs from Pluto." Hazel pointed out.
"Not Pluto. Not any Roman god, I think. She's excellent with Greek, but I showed her some lines in Latin and she had no idea what they meant." Annabeth said.
"And she's definitely not a child of Apollo." Will said. "She's a terrible archer."
"She doesn't have the muscle of an Ares kid." Clarisse snorted.
"And I don't thinks she's a daughter of Poseidon. I asked Casper the other day what a couple of fish were saying, and she looked at me like I was crazy."
"Very well." Chiron sighed. "We'll just have to wait and see."
"That's not fair!" Percy sounded angry. "She's a good kid. And she's fourteen; a year over the deadline. This whole thing is ridiculous."
"I know, Percy. I know." Chiron rubbed his face with his hand. He sounded sad. "We'll have to wait and see." He said again.
I rushed away. I didn't want to hear any more of them talking about me. I felt terrible. They didn't know what to do with me or where to put me. My dad didn't want to claim me. I was all alone. Again.
I fiddled nervously with the straps of my armor, and with the sword hanging from my belt. The sword was bulky and unbalanced, so that whenever I fought with it I felt like I was about to fall over. I was really nervous about the game of capture the flag that was about to begin.
I was being included as part of the Hermes cabin for the game. The Athena cabin was leading the first team. Also on our team was Aphrodite's cabin, Dionysus, Zeus, and Poseidon, which pretty much meant Jason and Percy.
The other team, led by the Hephaestus cabin, also had Ares, Hades, and Apollo.
I wasn't sure who was going to win. They were bigger, and they had the hades cabin, which was really just Nico (Hazel had returned to Camp Jupiter), but Nico meant a big advantage. According to Percy, when Nico had started playing capture the flag about six months ago, he'd started summoning hordes of zombies to fight for whatever side he was on. But that made everything totally unfair, so Chiron made a new rule that Nico could only summon five zombies.
But then, we had Jason and Percy, who were two seriously powerful demigods. We also had Annabeth, which would hopefully give us the upper hand. But I still wasn't sure.
"This is going to be so fun!" Ella squealed. The Aphrodite had been helping her with her hair the day before, so it was neatly trimmed and even, and dyed bright blue. They hadn't liked the blue part, but she had insisted. I didn't share her enthusiasm. My stomach churned with anxiety.
"Aren't you so excited? I know I am!" Ella whispered.
"Yeah. I'm really excited." I lied. A tremor ran through the ground, and the crowd of demigods shifted nervously, anxious murmurs running up and down the group.
Our teams split up. The Hephaestus team, carrying a huge bronze-colored banner with a red hammer on it, went left. Our team, led by Annabeth and the other Athena campers carrying a huge white banner with a silver banner, went right.
Ella and I walked side-by-side behind Percy and Annabeth. As we walked into the woods, Annabeth started sending groups of demigods off into different directions.
Ella and I, along with Piper and a pretty girl named Drew from the Aphrodite cabin, were posted at the creek, the border line. Percy and Annabeth sped off into our territory.
Drew seemed pretty nasty. She wrinkled her nose at Ella's blue hair, and gave my dirty leather jacket and red ski cap a look of distaste. "Why did we get stuck out here?" Ella asked Piper. "We're not the best fighters on the team, and we're not bad enough to get ignored."
Piper nodded. "Annabeth told me her plan. Apparently we have a small team of fighters holding down the left flank, while the main portion of our team is going to draw them out on the right flank. Then, when Annabeth gives the signal, we'll run up the center, sneak past the border guards, find the flag, fight our way past the flag guards, and we'll be home free. Easy-peasy."
I frowned. "Depends on your definition of easy." Piper grinned and opened her mouth to say something, but at that moment another tremor ran through the ground. Drew stumbled and would've fallen if it weren't for Ella catching her. Drew made a sound of disgust and shoved Ella, who stuck her tongue out at Drew.
I was so mad I could've kicked Drew, but I didn't. She was on my team.
A conch horn sounded somewhere deeper in the woods. It was followed by the sound of metal clashing and fighting demigods.
"We have to wait for the signal before we-" A light flashed somewhere in the woods, in the direction that Percy and Annabeth had taken the flag. "OK, time to go. Run!"
We sprinted through the woods, leaping over fallen logs and rocks, and dodging the occasional pair of fighting demigods. We crouched behind some bushes, watching a pile of boulders that Piper called Zeus's fist. Perched way way above our heads, on top of the rocks, was the flag. Standing in front of it was Nico di Angelo, Clarisse from Ares, and a dead US marine.
"Okay, here's the plan." Piper whispered. "Drew, you skirt around and distract them. Try to draw away at least one of them. Then Ella and I will attack, and give Casper an opening to climb up there and grab the flag. Once you've got it, forget us and run for the creek." Ella and I nodded.
Even Drew didn't protest. She slunk away into the trees. A few minutes later, a shriek came from the other side of Zeus's fist.
Drew was sprawled on the ground, her sword gone. Either she really had tripped, or she was a really good actress.
Clarisse barreled off towards her, and as soon as she plunged into the bushes after Drew, who had scrambled to her feet, we leaped out of the bushes.
Piper slashed at the zombie, in a spear-on-knife battle. Ella, a much better fighter than me, fired three arrows at Nico. He dodged them all and advanced with his sword. Ella drew her own sword and the two launched into combat.
I dodged the US marine's spear and jumped at the bottom of Zeus's fist. I grabbed a handhold and scrambled up the rocks.
In only a minute I was halfway up, but below me things weren't going as well. Piper had finished off the zombie, but Clarisse was back and Drew was nowhere in sight, and Piper was losing. Clarisse slashed mercilessly with her electric spear, and Piper barely dodged. Nico and Ella were moving so fast I couldn't see their arms, but Nico was slowly pushing her back.
I turned back towards the stone in front of my face and kept climbing, reaching up with one hand for another handhold. A gust of wind banged me against the rough stone, scraping my hands and knees. Hanging on desperately with burning fingertips, I screamed a few choice swear words in English and Greek. I grabbed the top of Zeus's fist and pulled myself onto the top. I rolled onto my back, gasping for breath and rubbing my scraped fingers.
Far below me, Piper let out a cry of pain. I leaned forward and saw her on her back, knife several feet away, clutching her stomach. Clarisse's sword sparked with electricity. Suddenly, my mouth tasted bitter and metallic with anger. A crowd of fighters streamed into the clearing, kids from our team fighting with the other team. I felt a spark of fear.
My fear and anger gave me the strength to stand. I grabbed the flag with one hand, but before I could start climbing down, the ground started to shake violently. Demigods lost their footing and tumbled to the ground. Screams and yells of pain and fear echoed through the woods. I screamed as Zeus's fist started to sway. Below me, campers started to realize what was going on and scattered, fighting breaking out again.
I saw something that made my heart stop. A chasm split the clearing in half. I screamed in terror.
The shaking got worse, and Zeus's fist fell.
I screamed in terror as I tumbled through the air, surrounded by boulders that could crush me in an instant. I clutched to the flag desperately as the ground came rushing up to meet me.
I rolled when I hit the ground, hitting my head and giving myself the heimlich maneuver with the flag pole. All of me hurt. I couldn't even stand. Someone grabbed my arm and pulled me out of the way just as a boulder slammed into the ground where I had been a second before.
"Casper! Are you okay?" Piper shouted, chaos spreading through the crowd. I scrambled to my feet. The other campers were running around yelling, dodging boulders. A few stood and stared at me, and some were still fighting.
"Everyone! Please!" Chiron bellowed, cantering towards me, shoving his way through the crowd. When I saw the wounded campers riding on his back, and my mouth tasted like I'd eaten mud. "Stop fighting!" It took a few minutes, but everyone stopped fighting and turned to face Chiron. A lot of people were injured. "How did this happen?"
"Another earthquake!" An Apollo camper shouted. "A big one!"
"No." I said. Suddenly, in my head, all the pieces of the puzzle started to fit together. "This was my fault."
"Cas, listen to yourself." Ella pushed her way forward. "How could you have done this?"
But I was sure I was right. The earthquakes only came when I felt a strong negative emotion, like fear, anger, or nervousness. It made sense. Somehow, someway, this was all my fault.
Everyone was staring at me. "Casper, there's no way you could've-" Chiron started, but he stopped, and then everyone was staring at something above my head.
It was a glowing trident.
"All hail Caspian Moore, daughter of Poseidon, god of earthquakes." Chiron shouted.
Suddenly, all around me, people fell to their knees. I turned in a circle. I was surrounded by a sea of bowing demigods.
"Oh, crap." I whispered.
