Not much to say about this chapter, enjoy~
"I see. I didn't think we'd be trapped inside for so long." Negi sighed. 'I knew we were trapped inside for a while, but I didn't think two years had passed.'
"Arthur, what happened to all the other members?" Evangeline asked, looking around the dust-filled office.
"Most of them moved on. They've either started their own communities or they've joined someone else's. The only ones left are the officers and a few regulars." Arthur was the silver haired boy. Although he physically looked twelve, he was actually a few years younger than Evangeline.
"I'll need a list." He sighed again. "Byakko, can you retrieve the logbook from storage?"
"Sure thing, I'll be back in no time." Byakko, whose real name was Lei Hu, was a descendent of the Chinese 'Guardian of the West' Byakko. He was a were-beast whose true form was that of a menacing white tiger. He could freely change his appearance between his tiger and human forms.
"Hayate, how's our treasury doing?" Negi asked while organizing all the paper that was strewn across the floor.
"Honestly, it's almost gone. A lot of the members took some as an offering to other communities. They pretty much cleared it out." Hayate was the blue haired boy. He was a Japanese Yuki-Otoko (lit. Snow Man, the male counterpart to the Yuki-Onna, or snow woman).
Negi sighed. "This doesn't look good at all. I didn't expect that our flag would be taken."
"How did we lose it in the first place?" Evangeline asked.
"A demon lord forced our newest and youngest member into a fight with our flag as the wager. And as you've probably guessed, no one wants to associate with us [No Names] anymore."
"Tch!" Evangeline clicked her tongue. "First Canaria loses her flag and then we lose ours. Did anything good happen while we were gone?"
"Yes, apparently, Canaria-sama's community summoned three strong members. I haven't actually seen them, but I've heard of their exploits all the way out here." Arthur was currently using a broom to sweep all the dust off the floor.
"How strong are they?" Evangeline asked, her curiosity piked.
"Like I said, I haven't actually seen them, but I heard that they were involved in the defeat of a demon lord that attacked Salamandra's territory."
"I assume Sala's taken over by now." Evangeline was sitting on the couch, watching the other three members clean the room.
"No, Sala-sama left Salamandra. Last I heard, she was the leader of the Draco Grief Alliance. They should be planning for the Harvest Festival at this time of year." Hayate was clearing out all of the cobwebs that had accumulated over the years.
"Then is Mandora… no, Sandora should be of age by now. Is she the new Leader then?" Negi asked, placing the sorted papers into his desk.
"Yeah, The Demon Lord attacked during her coronation I think." Byakko answered as he opened the northern door, logbook in hand. He walked over towards Negi and handed him the book. "Here ya go Boss!"
"Boss?" Negi asked in confusion, receiving the book with a bewildered expression.
"Don't ask. He's been watching mafia movies lately." Arthur sighed.
After giving the logbook a skim, Negi sighed again. "This isn't good at all…" Another sigh.
"How many are left?" Evangeline asked.
"Thirteen." He sighed again.
"That's… not good. Not even a tenth of our previous numbers. Who's still here?" It was Evangeline's turn to sigh this time.
"Me, You, these three, Mikan, Sylvia, Hina, Lance, Claire, Elle, Roland and Dominic."
"At least all the officers stayed. That's something… right?" Byakko was cleaning the windows on the southern wall.
All five sighed as they continued to clean and reorganize the room, except Evangeline as she continued to laze around on the couch.
Later that day.
"Is I true? Are they really back?" A loud voice rang throughout the great hall. It belonged to none other than Mikan Sakurai, the Chief of Staff (Head Maid) for their community. She was a girl with long orange-red hair than went down to her waist. She was a half-demon who was raised by her adoptive parents, both human.
Next to her was the much quieter Hina Rin. She had short brown hair and was in charge of the community's medical facilities. She was a Druid with the ability to completely heal any injury at the expense of her own life force. She communicated with her actions rather than words, so she was a rather quiet and serene individual.
"Hey there!" Negi said casually, flashing them his usual gigolo smile, not that he realized it himself.
"Negi!" Mikan yelled as she jumped into his arms. "I missed you!" She completely embraced him, almost like she was embracing her lover. That was just the kind of person she was.
Hina was tugging on his arm and smiling at him. He casually raised his hand and patted her on the head, making her both blush and tear up at the same time, though her smile gotten even brighter.
Evangeline sighed. "There he goes again."
"Eva-chi!" Mikan yelled after noticing Evangeline. She immediately let go of Negi and dived at Evangeline and gave her the same hug. "I missed you too!" Tears were beginning to well in her eyes as well.
"I said not to call me that!" Evangeline griped, even as she returned the passionate hug in her own, not quite as passionate, way.
Now she felt something soft hit her back. When she turned around, she saw Hina hugging her from behind, tears now streaming down her face. Even though the soft sensation kind of ticked her off, she let a small smile lift her face.
"You look so much cuter with a smile on your face Eva." Negi said as he watched the scene not two feet away.
"Sh-shut it!" she griped. She shot him the fiercest glare she had, but her blushing cheeks betrayed her intention.
"You really are cute when you smile though!" Mikan chimed in.
"I said shut it!" Evangeline yelled, trying to escape from the situation.
"Oho, I guess it was true after all. You really are back Negi-kun." The voice belonged to Roland, a middle-aged man with short blonde hair and a goatee. Although he wasn't an officer, he was captain of the defense team and an irreplaceable member of the community.
"Ah Roland!" Negi yelled, waving to his old friend. "Did you get even bigger?"
"You noticed huh?" He chuckled.
"It would be hard not to actually." He chuckled back at him, rubbing the back of his head in the process. "Dominic isn't with you?"
"He should be right behind me, oh speak of the devil." Roland pointed to his right.
Walking towards the group was a sinister looking man with short black hair. His sinister expression alone looked like it could kill. Ironically enough, he was the gentlest person in the community, he was also the best cook Negi had even seen. His name was Dominic and he was second in charge of housework, behind Mikan.
"Hey Dominic!" Negi called out to him.
Dominic smiled back, but his expression made it seem like he wanted to murder whoever was in front of him. For that reason, Dominic only smiled in front of those who knew about his personality. He was the quietest member of the community, even quitter than Hina. Only Negi had ever heard him speak, and that was the pledge for their community.
"Hey there Eva-chi!" Roland greeted Evangeline.
Evangeline let out yet another sigh and shrugged her shoulders. "I give up, call me whatever you want."
"Will do!" Roland replied with even more enthusiasm.
Dominic bowed to Evangeline, as was his traditional greeting.
Four people were walking towards the group from the community's front gate. They were Arthur, Hayate, Byakko and Sylvia.
Sylvia was Byakko's wife and a were-beast just like him. Except she was Blue Fox with a distinct orange stripe running down her back. It ran from the back of her head all the way to the tip of her tail. When in her human form, she was a slender woman with short blue hair and orange highlights. She was a former spy in her own parallel world, so she was in charge of the community's information gathering.
As soon as she was close to Negi and Evangeline, she began to sniff them. "It really is them huh?" she smiled. "It's good to see you two again."
"It's good to see you again as well, Sylvia-san." Negi returned her greeting.
"Did you two enjoy your time alone?" she asked Evangeline, obviously trying to tease her. "You were trapped together for two whole years after all."
"It was only a few weeks for us." She scoffed, looking away from the others to hide her blush.
"So…" she continued, "Any developments?"
"O-o-of course not!" Evangeline fumed. "Why would anything happen between me and Boya!?"
"Eh! Did I do something wrong?" Negi asked, not understanding the situation he was in. Sometimes, being to innocent can be a bad thing.
"See what I'm talking about…" Evangeline murmured.
"Never mind then…" Sylvia sighed. "I feel sorry for you sometimes." She said as she patted Evangeline on the shoulders.
"Eh? Eh?" Negi was just too ridiculously dense sometimes.
"Oh, looks like everyone's already here." "Looks like it." The last two to arrive were Lance and Claire, respectively. Lance was a young man who held the soul of a dragon within his body. Because of that, he had fiery red hair that seemed to grow at will. Claire was a young girl with mid-length black hair and beautiful silver eyes. She was the member that had cost them their flag, but no one held her responsible.
"Lance! Claire! I missed you guys!" Negi yelled as they waved at each other.
"Hey!" Lance replied. "The little ne has something she wants to say. I told her it was pointless though."
"It is, but let her say it regardless." Negi chuckled to himself.
"Alright, go ahead and say it then!" Lance urged her on.
"N-N-N-N-Negi-kun! E-E-Eva-chi! I-I'm so sorry!" After Claire said that, she got down on her hands and knees and placed her forehead on the ground. "I'm so sorry that I lost our flag! It's all my fault!"
Negi and Evangeline gave each other a knowing look and sighed simultaneously.
"Claire." Negi started slowly.
"Raise your head." Evangeline continued.
"I know how it feels, but you mustn't let yourself feel responsible for what happened." Negi started.
"Even if it wasn't you, someone else would have lost our flag, that would have been an inevitable outcome." Evangeline finished.
"B-B-But it doesn't change that fact that I'm the one who lost it. It's my fault alone! I wasn't strong enough!" Claire was letting her emotions run free.
"Claire!" Negi shouted. "This isn't solely your fault. You're not the only one who should be held accountable."
"That's right. If either of us had been there, this wouldn't have happened. None of you were strong enough to face a demon lord two years ago, and most of you still aren't." Evangeline added.
"We lost our flag, so what? Yes, that flag was the symbol of our pride, the symbol and name of our community. But! That flag does not define our community. It does not define who we are individually." Negi was starting to get heated up.
"So what if we lost our flag! So what if we lost our name! So what if we lost our symbol! So what if we lost almost every single member of our community! None of that matters! What matters is that we're still here! We're still alive!" Evangeline was getting just as heated.
"Even if we've been kicked to the curb, stomped on and covered in mud, we must continue to move forward. If not, that what do you have left? Would you deny who you are? Would you deny what you've accomplished because you lost once? Would you deny those of us who simply want to help? Would you?" At this point, Negi was almost shouting.
"Would you deny us because you feel sorry for yourself? Would you deny everything that you've done until now because you feel responsible for something beyond your control." Evangeline harshly scolded her.
"I…I…" Claire had been reduced to a heap of sobs and tears. She was crying her heart out. Two years of repressed emotions came surging forth all at once. Her sobs contained the sadness of everyone present. They had waited and struggled for two painfully long years after all.
A gentle hand touched the back of her head. "Of course you wouldn't, right? Because that's not who you are." Negi gently rubbed the back of her head, like a father rubbing the head of his newborn child.
Claire raised her head, tears and snot running down her face. "I… I… !"
Negi pulled her into a hug, softly embracing her. "It's okay, you don't have to say anything." He gently placed his hand on the back of her head and softly stroked it, letting her cry into his shoulder.
The other members watched from a short distance away, tears welling in their eyes.
"Eva-chi~" Mikan shouted, diving towards Evangeline for a hug.
"Oh no you don't!" Sylvia said as she caught Mikan in the air. "That's not your place."
"But Eva-chi is crying by herself~" she was thrashing about in Sylvia's embrace.
"I know, but that isn't you job right now." Sylvia said, holding back her own tears.
"I know… I know that, but Eva-chi…" Mikan was now crying in Sylvia's arms.
Sylvia was also crying. Byakko was stroking her back, forcing her to let it all out.
Dominic and Lance were consoling Hina while Arthur, Hayate and Roland stood to the side, barely keeping their own emotions in check.
Evangeline was crying. Not even she understood the reason for her tears. She wasn't the type to cry after all. It just wasn't her style. She was the cruel evil type right? So why was she of all people crying? She didn't understand her own emotions. Or maybe she didn't want to understand them.
But then she realized why. She realized why she was crying. She realized that one of the things that she had always wanted was right before her eyes. She realized that what she had always desired lay right before her.
She just wanted someone to understand her, to scold her, to be there for her. She wanted someone who could fix her when she was broken. Someone to guide her when she was lost. Someone to be there when no one else was.
Why had she never noticed this before? Why was she just now realizing this? Why could she not see something so obvious?
She knew why. It wasn't that she had never noticed. It was because she refused to believe it. When she had finally found someone she thought she could trust, he betrayed her. She never wanted that to happen again. So when she found someone else she could trust, she refused to admit it.
But those feelings never went away, not even now. In fact, they had only grown stronger. So strong that she could no longer keep them in check. She couldn't hide these feelings anymore. She could no longer pretend they were no longer there.
She longed for that someone so strongly now that she could no longer hold herself back.
But this wasn't the time she thought. It's her turn right now. She needs him more than I do right now. She needs his shoulder to cry on more than I do. So it's her turn.
It doesn't matter how much I need him right now, it doesn't matter how much it hurts. She needs him more. She needs…
She finally realized it, someone was holding her from behind. They were holding her so gently, she hadn't noticed. "Evangeline… Evangeline…Eva!" he kept calling her, but she just stared.
Her eyes were wide, with tears streaming down her face. She finally lost control; she could no longer hold back her rampaging emotions.
"Negi! Negi! Negi! Negi!" She continued to call his name as he pulled her closer, held her tighter. "Negi! Negi!"
"It's alright. I'm right here. I won't go anywhere." Without even realizing it, he had spoken the words she most wanted to hear.
"Please… please don't leave me!" she clung to him so tightly she was afraid she would crush him, but her body refused to let go. She didn't want to be abandoned again.
"It's alright." He said, stroking the long blonde hair. "I just told you I'm not going anywhere didn't I? It's not like I could ever leave you in the first place."
His words were comforting, they were everything she wanted to hear. She grabbed the hand he was stroking her hair with and place in into her own. She firmly gripped his hand, and he firmly gripped hers.
She looked up into his eyes. They stared back at hers, never wavering. "Negi…" she softly whispered his name.
"Eva…" he whispered back.
She closed her eyes and leaned forward, he did the same.
"...what's all the noise about?..."
They both froze. They had completely lost track of their surroundings. They were embracing each other in a public place for the world to see.
"ELLE! Mikan and Sylvia yelled simultaneously. Elenorwen, or Elle for short, was a dryad who lived in the large tree is the center of the courtyard. All the crying must have woken her up.
"...hmm?..." Elle started at them in confusion.
"LEARN TO READ THE MOOD!" they yelled again.
"...hmm?..." Elle repeated her question "...what mood?..." she asked as she yawned.
"E-Elle-chan. H-hello."
"...Negi-kun, Eva-chi..." she replied back. "...what's all the noise about? It's hard to sleep..."
"Nothing! Nothing at all! Don't worry about it!" he spat out, trying to quickly change the conversation.
"...hmm?..." she stared at him. "...whatever. Welcome home..."
"It's good to be home. Ha ha…" he chuckled.
"Y-yeah…" Evangeline added. Her ears were still bright red.
"...hmm…" Elle said groggily. "...I'm going back to sleep then..."
Later that night, the community held a small celebration regarding the return of their community Co-Leaders.
Claire had stopped crying and had seemed to move on from her previous failure. She was having a small chat with Hina.
Roland, Lance and Arthur were telling old stories to each other.
Byakko and Sylvia were sitting on a bench cuddling with each other.
Dominic was in the kitchen, preparing desert Mikan assisting him.
Hayate was talking to Elle about the changes in seasons.
Negi and Evangeline, the guests of honor, were straight out ignoring each other. Their only communication being the awkward glances they would shoot each other every now and then. Whenever there eyes met, they would immediately look away and blush before timidly repeating this over and over again.
"I swear it's like watching grade schoolers crushing on each other." Sylvia sighed. "It would be cute if that was what it was, but they're both too old for this kind of thing."
"Well, they did embarrass themselves in front of everybody." Byakko chuckled.
"But still, there's no reason that things should be this awkward between them."
"It's a first for both of them after all. And Eva-chi did cry her eyes out, she won't let that go for a while."
"Maybe we should do something about it for them?" Sylvia asked, a small glint in her eye.
"There's no need. See, Arthur's moving in for the kill."
"How long do you two plan to keep this up?" Arthur asked Negi as he sat down next to him.
"We're not…" Negi sighed. "I don't know. It's just hard to talk after… that happened."
"Nothing's going to change unless you do talk to each other. Or do you want to continue this awkward exchange of stares forever?" Arthur decided to tease him a little bit.
"Your right." Negi admitted. "You'd think I'd be old enough to know that already. Thanks Arthur, I'll be going now."
'That was fast!' Arthur thought as Negi walked away.
Negi motioned for Evangeline to follow him. Although she hesitated for a moment, she knew this had to be done and followed him.
The destination was his office. At least there, they were guaranteed some privacy.
"Eva… about earlier…" he started.
"Don't say anything! Just listen." She cut him off. "When Nagi… when your father trapped me inside that school, I was angry, heartbroken and alone. I never wanted to go through that again."
Evangeline had decided to lay her feeling bare. She knew she could entrust all that she was to Negi.
"And then you showed up. The son of the man I loved had become my teacher. All those feelings flooded back into me. But more than anything, I felt betrayed. He was supposed to have freed me by then. Not only that, but he had a child, from a woman I didn't even know. I was so angry then." She paused, calming her emotions before she continued.
"So I wanted to hurt you. I wanted to kill you, even though you had nothing to do with it. And even after I hurt you, hurt your students, you still forgave me. I was too prideful at the time to admit it, but that made me happy. The happiest I'd been in a long while. It was at that time that I'd begun to see your father inside you." She continued.
"Everything went back to the way it was then. I still remember that time you took care of me when I was sick. That too made me happy, it would have been perfect if you hadn't used magic to see my dream. And then that time when you wanted me to teach you magic. I was honestly thrilled when you asked me. Negi Springfield, boy genius, son of the Thousand Master, asking me to teach him. Of course, I would have never admitted that back then, so I did everything I could to make sure it didn't seem like I enjoyed the idea of teaching you. I was a real idiot back then." She chuckled to herself.
"And then you told me you wanted to go to the magic world. I was honestly frightened. Where you going to abandon me, just like your father did? I knew you wouldn't, but that fear was always there. I knew you wouldn't take no for an answer, so I did everything I could to make you stronger at that time. When you were finally gone, I was wracked with worry, like a mother worrying about their child on the first day of school. I was truly foolish then." She laughed.
"Every day, every single day, I worried about you. It's not something I want to admit, not even now, but even though, you were already irreplaceable to me. Most of those days remain a blur in my memory, I was so wracked with worry, I don't even remember half of what happened back then. And then one day, I see you fighting in a giant hole in the sky above a world tree. Using Magia Erebea of all things." Her eyes were beginning to gloss over.
"I was so happy you were following in my footsteps. But at the same time I was terrified. No human had ever used Magia Erebea and lived to tell of it. I know many tried but they all failed before they even started. I was worried about your future. There was no telling what Magia Erebea was going to do to you, and so I was terrified of losing you. That was when I realized these feelings of mine. Of course, I'd never have admitted to them, not even to myself. I didn't want to get hurt again, so I hid them away. Far, far away, where they'd never see the light of day again."
"And so, I watched over you from a distance, from that giant hole in the sky. You were absolutely marvelous, truly marvelous. But then my fears came true. Magia Erebea consumed you. That might have been the first time I'd ever cried for someone else." Tears began welling up in the corners of her eyes.
"And then, against all logic, you came back, and stronger than ever. You'd even beaten Fate and achieved your goal. But tragedy struck again and showed up. I was so angry at that time, but I couldn't let others see me like that, so I played it cool. I almost got rid of that broken idiot too. Not like that would have stopped him anyway. And then he showed up, in Nagi's body of all things. I had almost fallen into despair, but you and the princess saved me. You saved the whole magical world actually. Those repressed feelings came back, but I pushed them back down. I had thought that there was no way you would share the same feelings, not when you had all those girls to choose from." She gave herself a wry smile.
"But they wouldn't stay down. They never would. When I found out that you had transformed into a monster, an immortal monster like me, my heart soared. It was then that I had decided. Even if you never returned my feelings, even if you loved another, I would always be there if you needed me. Little did I know that I was the one who needed you all along. And so I decided that no matter what happened, I would follow you."
"And then we came here, to a whole new world, right in the middle of huge battle. I never thought I'd witness a battle between gods and demons. I still can't believe how cocky Canaria was when we first met her. I still can't believe she's gone either."
"I had thought that this new world was my chance, my chance to set things straight, to be honest with myself about these feelings. I was so close to confessing so many times, but something always got in my way. And then you told me you wanted to start a community, I thought my chance had finally come. But then I saw how you acted around the other girls. You were so open and carefree around them. It was then that I feared that confessing would ruin our relationship. Thinking back on it, it was a really stupid thought. We've known each other too long for something like that to ruin our relationship. But at that time I was so worried that you'd hate me if I confessed, so I buried these feelings of mine once again."
"But once I saw you consoling Claire, they all came flooding back again and I just couldn't hold the tears back anymore. You have no idea how happy it made me when you hugged me from behind. It felt like I had finally found the place where I belonged. It felt like I had finally found the one thing that I had always longed for. I wanted confirmation on those feelings. I still do." She gave him a nervous glance, placing her index finger upon her lips.
Negi was honestly shocked. Not because of what Evangeline had said, in fact, it made him happy that she felt the same way. What shocked him was how honest she was being. It was something Negi was simply unaccustomed to.
"Eva." He finally spoke. "You know, when we first met, I was so scared of you. I thought of you as the evil witch that I had to defeat. I still can't believe how childish I was back then. But as time went on, I began to trust and really on you. I wanted you to teach me magic. It didn't matter how many times you told me no, I would have begged you until you accepted. I would accept no one else as my master. Honestly, if it wasn't for you, I would be dead by now. I would have died in Kyoto had it not been for you. I would have certainly died in the magic world were it not for you. It's no exaggeration to say that I owe you my life. I admired you. I thought you were strong, I thought you were cool. In a way, you were what I aspired to be. I would have never learned Magia Erebea if it weren't your technique. I'm not even sure when, but somewhere along our journey, my feelings of admiration turned into those of love. But I was too scared to admit them. I thought you still loved my father and I didn't want to do anything to jeopardize our relationship. It really was a stupid thought wasn't it. I guess we're both idiots." He laughed.
"Do you want to continue where we left off?" he asked her, slowly leaning into her.
"…yeah…" she replied, slowly leaning into him.
"Ready?" he asked.
"Not reall…" he lips were seized. The soft sensation of his lips of hers sent ripples of pleasure throughout her body. Her mind was going black, and then it was over.
"Sorry, I couldn't wait." He apologized.
"Again." She demanded. Their lips met again. The ripples returned, this time stronger than before. The taste of tea invaded her mouth. It was a pleasant taste. His arms held her tight and hers held him.
Their lips parted again, both gasping for air.
"Again" she said. The lips met once again. She pushed her tongue into his mouth. He hesitated at first but quickly consented. The kiss lasted until Evangeline had to gasp for air.
"Evange…" this time he was the one silenced. Another long kiss.
"I love you." He said between kisses.
"You're doing this is the wrong order." She chuckled.
"So are you." He retorted.
"You're the English Gentlemen here."
"Touche."
"Again."
AN: It was more awkward writing that last part than I thought it would be. I know someones going to complain about Evangeline being out of character, so I'll go ahead and address that here. Yes, she will be slightly out of character, but remember, it's been a long time since she "graduated" at the end of the manga. A few hundred years in fact. Both her and Negi have grown up in some areas and have stayed the same in others. Get over it :D
Anyway, my goal for this chapter was to write something that would invoke an emotion from the reader. So, tell me how I did on that front. Even I think I overdid it a bit on some parts though.
This chapter was used to introduce the rest of the community and give you guys some background into their characters. I wanted to show some of the chemistry between the members who waited. You'll learn more about them as the story progresses.
It turned out to be a lot different than the original version didn't it. It's almost like a completely new story.
I'm going to go ahead a make a couple of things clear. First off, the problem children will be involved in this story and they will be important to it. You'll see them soon. Secondly, I do NOT bash characters, no matter how much I hate them, so you don't have to worry about that. Thirdly, I'm not going to make either side ridiculously OP compared to the other, so you don't have to worry about one-sided fights. Fourthly, this will have romance elements, it will have harem elements, but it will not be a harem. Not yet at least :p
Anyway, please favorite, follow and review if you enjoyed my story. And thank you in advance if you do any of those. Criticism is also welcome.
Until next time ^_^
