I know that I am bad. That this…is bad. But quite frankly Maka didn't care. She never intended for it to play out like this but once she saw those eyes filled with tears it stopped any rational thought she had. All she could think while staring into those golden globes filled with tears, was him.
She thought about the way they sparkled when he made her laugh and the small flicker of amusement when Liz and Patti fought. She thought about the loneliness and bittiness that had plagued them for so long. But mostly she thought about the cold, harden glare she had first felt when she arrived and how much everything had changed between them. She hadn't been here long maybe a few months but her mind and heart were in agreement. She loved this boy more than anyone she had ever met. More than her father, more than Soul, more than her books and all the sweets in the world. And just once she wanted to show him that, if only once.
When his lips pressed against hers she didn't know what to expect. She wasn't afraid of rejection, her greatest fear is that nothing would happen at all. But she was wrong. When she fell back onto the bed she knew that, if this were anyone else, if she were back home, this wouldn't be happening. He was about to get married. But because it was Kid she just couldn't bring herself to feel bad, she knew she would later, but for now she would enjoy the small piece of him he had granted her.
"I will never deserve this." He whispered with eyes shadowed. For a moment her heart softened and she felt the very reason why she fell in love in the first place. Without a word she guided his eyes up to hers. His tears fell on her cheeks and mixed in her own.
"You have it all wrong Kid." She kissed him again, lightly with just the smallest tinged of need. "You will never know, how much you mean to me."
His eyes clouded for the briefest of moments before he focused on her again. His gaze was far more focused, filled with something akin to passion but gentle at the same time. Almost questioning, he brushed his lips against hers. She smiled against him before pushing back more insistently. His arms enclosed her head but she didn't feel trapped, instead she felt as if he were protecting her form the world, that in this small little space they were free to be who they wanted.
She pulled him close leaving out any question he may have had. His lips moved against hers in an unpracticed manner but at the same time it was almost endearing. It warmed Maka inside to know that this was probably his first kiss and he willingly gave it to her.
He removed one of his hands and brushed it against her arm sending shivers up her back. He pulled away and looked at her with concern. Maka only smiled and shook her head. His grin was unfocused, lopsided really. Maka wanted to chuckle at the change in personality when he pushed back against her. He smashed his lips against hers with more fervor.
She was so startled when she felt his tongue slide on her lower lip. She gasped out of instinct and he took his chance. It was timid at first, calm, almost as if he was exploring her. However, as she reciprocated it became a duel for dominance in which Maka very clearly lost. His hand slipped around her waist and behind her back to pull her body up to him. She had never realized how strong he was, and yet so gentle. She relished the moment for all it was worth and wrapped her arms around his neck, toying with the short hairs at the back of his head.
She broke apart the kiss gasping for air and at the tender look in his eyes. She wanted to dive into the golden pools and never come back out. They reminded her of sunshine and honey.
"Maka I…." He was breathing hard too. She could see him trying to calculate something in his mind. Something he could not quite understand.
"Don't." She commanded. She knew exactly what he was going to say. "Just stay with me tonight. I wish you all the happiness in the world, but just for tonight I want to be selfish."
"But this is wrong. I cannot… you are not mine to take." Almost teasingly he toyed with the trim of her shirt, just barely brushing his fingertips against her skin. She knew he didn't have any idea what it was doing to her but it just made the argument more valid.
"I am whoever's I wish…and I choose you." She pulled him into another kiss and guided his hand under her shirt. It rested on the dip in her side and she sighed happily. His hands were soft and cool. Against the burning heat of her body it felt a bit like paradise. Slowly his hand started to drift upwards, giving her plenty of time to stop him but she didn't. She wanted anything he was willing to give.
He broke the kiss again but only for a moment. Maka could see something inside him, tearing to get out and his last line of defense was failing. "I will always-"
KNOCK! KNOCK! KNOCK!
The two jumped, unaware of anyone being near. After all they were just in some random room in the palace. "Maka! We know you are in there! Come out!"
"We are scared for you. I wanna make sure you are okay." Patti cried from behind the door with her sister. Her tone was more serious than Maka had ever heard before.
"I can smell you in there! I know this is hard but you can't run. We will figure something out." Liz cried before banging on the door again. Kid looked furious as he glared at the door. Maka giggled at the thought of it burst into flames but then again he could probably do that.
With a sigh he kissed her one last time chastely before standing up. He straighten his suit before glancing back at her. With a flick of his wrist he tucked a small flyaway behind her ear and smiled. At another insistent knock he sighed and walked calmly over to the door. As it swung open the two sisters tumbled over each other from where they were leaning on it.
"Ow!" Patti cried from on top of Liz before looking up to see a smiling Maka on the bed. "Maka you're okay!"
"Good. I'm glad cause your boobs are crushing me. Get. Off. Patti." Liz huffed out as she too noticed Maka smiling. When she had finally pushed her sister off she notice the reaper in the room with a smug grin on his face.
"Shut up Kid. I don't wanna hear about this again." She self-consciously covered her own chest while turning away in a huff.
Maka looked questionably at Patti who whispered in her ear. "Liz is upset because Kid always points out that if she had a bigger chest we would be much more symmetrical."
"So… Uh this girl…Crona is here. And I am guess you have already figured out what for." Liz looked sheepishly at Maka.
"You knew too?" She wasn't angry but more so bothered that no one thought to tell her anything.
"No! Well, yes. But we didn't think to tell you cause- well- uh." Liz tripped over her words just hoping not to hurt Maka. Kid took over from there. He patted Liz on her head and leaned against the white bed post.
"We weren't trying to hide this from you, honestly. We had never considered telling you because it was not pertinent information." Maka looked at him waiting for more but he just stared back.
"Kid… you gotta give her more than that."
"What do you mean?"
"Like WHY we didn't think it was worth it to tell her?"
"Oh, of course… Because it wasn't true." Liz smacked her hand against her head. Kid had been improving socially but apparently this little issue had set him back.
"Just… go sit somewhere." Apparently somewhere was next to Maka. "They were never gonna get married. Like ever. It was an agreement set up by Lord Death. After Medusa's creation of Chaos, Lord Death said he would take her first born child as ransom if she were ever to harm the humans again. Once things had mostly resolved she begged him not to. In a moment of mercy he said he would still take them into his kingdom but by marriage. She could have picked anyone, but she was so hungry for power she insisted it be Kid. Despite her dislike of him it was agreed upon. Crona would visit once a year for a week. However, as Medsua's anger with Kid grew so did her outspoken oppositions to this union. As a matter of fact Lord Death had planned on releasing the contract once she had settled down."
"Oh." Maka looked at Kid and wondered briefly what it was like to be handed around like a sack of potatoes. "I feel so stupid now."
"Don't." Kid commanded as he gripped the sheets roughly. Even the sisters looked questionably at him. "You were correct to be upset because as it seems, Medsua and now Corona want to go through with this union. She propositioned me in the hall."
"What?!" All three girls shouted. The reaper just looked awkwardly to the side.
"I told her no." He stated plainly.
"I am more concerned as to why she did." Liz sat back as Maka held the back of Patti's shirt to keep her from charging out the door, presumably to kill the girl. However, she had time to look up and make a "go on" gesture. "Well while Corona did not dislike it here she was always quite. She would often hide in corners and speak very little. She was shy and even yelped when Kid would accidently bump his foot against hers at the table. She couldn't meet his eyes. Even though she would do what her mother said it was always like she only followed it under threat."
"And now she wants sexy time? You sure do work fast Kiddy." Patti said from her now sitting positon on the floor. Maka kicked her onto her back and sat on her stomach.
"So why is she so suddenly enthusiastic?" Maka asked form her position. She barely knew the situation but she had seen enough cop dramas to know the right questions to ask. "I mean even if she were threatened, well you catch more bees with honey than vinegar."
"What do cooking ingredients have to do with this?" Kid asked.
"It means that you are more likely to have better results asking nicely than forcing it on someone."
"I don't think after years of abuse, Medsua asking nicely will make Corona forgive her instantly." Liz added.
"No… but maybe she did forget." Maka said as an idea formed in her head.
"I don't think Medsua could fathom getting that girl properly fed let alone something 'nice'."
"No but I mean… well souls come in knowing their past but wherever they go they have to end up forgetting it, right?"
"That is correct."
"So in the Fall they are burned off, here they keep them, so what about the servants in her kingdom." Everyone in the room slowly started to understand. "What if, Medusa used whatever it was on her own daughter to make her forget that she had ever done anything bad? So that she could sculpt her into whatever she needed."
Liz thought for a moment and turned to Kid. "Is that even possible?"
"Hmmm..." He rested his fingertips together in front of his chin and thought. Maka thought that it was rather cute seeing him think so deeply. "Perhaps, but the poppy drink she uses generally erases all memories permanently from the person. She doesn't get to pick and choose."
"But what if she only used a tiney tiny amount?" Patti said from her spot on the floor. "And could make Pinkyhead think about the ones she wanted to poof away before giving it to her?"
"…Patti. You are a genius. That might just be it!" Liz shouted from her spot.
"Yay! I'm smart! Go me! Woo Hoo!-"
"Don't celebrate just yet." Kid cut into the excitement. The look of a muddled brain painted across his face. "If that were the case then there is no way to reverse it. The poppy drink it's permanent so that when the souls are reborn they don't remember this side as well."
The room fell into a dejected silence once again. It was that moment that Maka managed to remember something important. "What about the servants? Do they get it too?"
"Uh, yes to forget their human sins. Why?"
"I think I can fix this…"
