Serena POV
They're dancing under the lights that hang from the fountain, he has one hand on her hip and the other one clasping the hand that isn't on his shoulder. He seems familiar to her, like she's known him her whole life but she can't put a name to him. Soft piano music floats out of the soundsystem he has set up not far behind them. She's spun around by him, her blonde hair spinning out behind her. She looks up at the sky and sees the sky is black with stars dotted about.
"Why are you looking up at the stars?" He asks, she can't place his voice either. Who is this mysterious yet charming man? She smiles at him, looking into his ice blue eyes: she knows these eyes but where from?
"No reason, can I ask you something?" He nods, allowing her to ask him the question she wants the answer to. "You can ask me anything, you know that." His voice is soft and silky like melted chocolate. She gives a small smile as they continue dancing.
"Who are you? I feel as if I know you but can't remember your name." She explains, frowning a little bit, he leans towards her, his lips at her ear, blowing his hot breath into it making her shiver with delight.
"You'll find out soon enough, Miss van der Woodsen." he tells her before kissing below her ear and pulling away.
The song finishes as she leans her head on his shoulder, feeling his hand on her back as he pulls her closer to him.
"Now will you tell me who you are?" She asks as the two of them untangle from their embrace. He shakes his head. "Just hold on a little bit longer." He tells her as he leads them to the bench facing the fountain where a picnic basket is waiting for them.
She sits down on the bench and looks at him, her blue eyes sparkling. He takes a seat beside her and opens the picnic basket, taking out a Tupperware container full of brownies.
Whoever this is clearly knows her love for brownies. Her face lights up as he takes a brownie in his hands and proceeds to feed it to her.
"I think it's time to tell you who I am now but first you need to know something: I've always loved you since we locked eyes the day we first met, I knew that you were the one who I wanted to spend the rest of my life with and somehow, finally, we have our time to do that." He says as he removes the mask that was covering his face.
She gasps as she sees the stunning ice blue eyes and blonde hair, a smile plastered on his face.
"Nate?!" She says, shocked. This whole time she was with Nate, one of her best childhood friends?! He made this night the most magical night of her life?
"Serena, I love you, I've always loved you, I want us to be together forever as cheesy as that sounds: I want to show you the world, I want to spoil you, I want to give you expensive things, things you deserve, I want to fall asleep with you on my arms and I want to stare at you as you sleep in the morning, I'll spend the rest of our lives showing you how much I love you, I love you more than my own life, I'd do anything to make you feel loved, Serena van der Woodsen, but I need to know: do you love me too?
Serena's blue eyes well up with tears as Nate finishes his speech.
Does she love him like he loves her?
Serena looks at the boy and takes his hand.
"Nate, you know that when it comes to love, I don't exactly have the greatest examples, my mom left me and Eric more times than I can because she was off chasing love and left us on your doorstep, she's been married five times and divorced them all and then left us at your doorstep once again as she went to find love again, Georgina said that everyone that I love and touch doesn't survive the 'Serena touch' so I'm scared to be in love but with you, it's as easy as breathing, so as long as I have you by my side, showing me that I am capable of love and being loved, then I know I can love you the way you me, Nathaniel Archibald, I love you. It's always been you who's ever fully had my heart."
Nate stands up and kneels before Serena and captures her lips in a kiss.
"I love you, Serena van der Woodsen for all I am and all I will be."
"I love you, Nate Archibald, from now till my last dying breath of life."
Serena wakes up with tears streaming down her face and a smile plastered on her face as she sits up and grabs the outfit she had on the day before she runs into her bathroom, dressing in under two minutes, pulling her hair into a ponytail and slipping her feet into a pair of ankle boots.
Serena can't believe it's been Nate she's loved all along. She needs to see him now. She needs to tell him how she feels before it's too late, before he moves on from her. She leaves her room and makes her way down the stairs and out of her new house, walking to Nate's house in the pitch black, letting her feet lead her to Nate's place on autopilot.
Nate's house is in front of her. Serena smiles as her feet walk her to the door where she rings the bell, hoping she doesn't wake up his parents.
The door opens and Nate, dressed in a t-shirt and shorts, stands there, his eyes just as icy and blue as always, confusion on his face.
"Serena, why are you here at 4 o'clock in the morning?" He asks, his voice soft and rough with sleep.

Nate POV
Nate wakes up to the door bell ringing. He groans, angry that someone is ringing his damn doorbell at 4 o'clock in the morning.
Who could be here at 4 in the morning?
He opens the door to see Serena van der Woodsen standing there. What is she doing on my doorstep at four in the morning? Nate asks himself as he continues to look at the love of his life who looks like she's been crying with happiness.
"Serena, what are you doing here at four in the morning?" Nate asks the blonde, his face rough with sleep. Serena looks at him before walking up to him and wrapping her arms around his neck and kissing him passionately. Nate hesitates for a second before he kisses her back, tasting her strawberry lip gloss. Nate pulls away from Serena when they need air, and a thousand questions are running through his head: does this mean what I think it does?
Nate looks at her and Serena giggles, appearing to know the unasked question because she nods at him.
"Nate, it took me a while to realize that you're the one for me, the one I want to spend the rest of my life with. I want you to show me that I can be loved and am capable of loving you back, the same way you love me." Serena tells him, Nate grins and picks Serena up in his arms and carries her to his room, laying her gently on his king size bed and straddles her, kissing her lips.
"I love you, Serena van der Woodsen, but I have to ask: what made you realize that you loved me?" He asks, flipping onto his next next to her and looking into her eyes. She smiles, her grin lighting up the entire room as she proceeds to tell him about the dream and the dance and their conversation after Nate revealed himself.
Nate smiles as Serena puts her head on his shoulder, Nate pecking her forehead. Nate hears Serena sighing in contentment.
"What are we, Nate? Are we a one-night stand? A fling? Friends with benefits? Or a couple?" Serena asks him quietly, Nate looks down at her, his eyes narrowing slightly. "Serena, what do you think we are? We both know I'm not a one-night stand kind of guy and I don't do flings or friends with benefits, so what's left?" He inquires, Serena looks up at him, their blue eyes gazing into one another's.
"I guess we're a couple." Serena says excitedly, kissing Nate's cheek, kissing him. Nate laughs as they cuddle and lie in each other's arms, watching the sun rise over the Upper East Side.
"All it took was a dance and a dream for me to realize that I love you. Thank you for waiting for me all this time." Serena says as she falls asleep in his arms.
"You know I would've waited until I died for you." Nate says, his eyes succumbing to the laughter of his girlfriend in his dreams.
Neither of them notice the flash of a cell phone snapping a photo and sending it to Blair and Chuck.
All it took was a dance and a dream to make her realize that she loves him.

Two years later:
Serena smiles as she walks down the stairs wearing a long sleeve silver floor length dress with silver heels and a necklace with a key from Nate, a bracelet from Blair, a pair of earrings from her mother and a silver clutch from Nate. Her family, minus Nate, are all waiting for her at the bottom of the stairs. Chuck moves to the steps, holding out an arm for her to take. "You look absolutely stunning, Sis. Nathaniel is not going to be able to take his eyes off you tonight." Smiling at her brother, Serena squeezes his arms.
"Thank you, Chuck, speaking of Nate, where is he?" The blonde asks. Her mother, Bart, her stepfather, Eric, Blair, Chuck, Eleanor, Cyrus and Anne are all giving one another smiles.
"Don't worry, Darling, he's just got something to do then he'll meet us there." Lily says to her daughter. Ever since that night two years ago, Nate and Serena haven't spent a night apart. "Okay." Serena says as she's led out of the door by her family and into a large limo.

Looking out of the window of the limo, Serena finds the key necklace that hangs from her neck, she smiles as she remembers the morning Nate gave it to her.
Two years ago- the morning after Serena kissed Nate at four am:
Serena smiles as she wakes up, staring into the blue eyes of Nate.
"Good morning, beautiful." He says. Serena puts her head on his chest and sighs happily.
"Good morning, handsome." The blonde girl replies.
"I love you." Nate says, Serena tilts her head and kisses him deeply. "I love you too." She says after breaking the kiss. Nate sits up and gets out of bed, walking to his closet, retrieving something from his safe. He returns to the bed with a box, and hands it to Serena.
Serena looks at him. "Nate, you didn't have to get me anything." She says, Nate chuckles and sits back down next to her.
"I was going to give you that on my deathbed but I think you should have it now." Nate says. Serena doesn't respond as she opens the lid, gasping as she sees a blue diamond encrusted key hanging from a chain. Her eyes are full of tears as she looks at him.
"Nate." She says quietly.
"Serena, I got this to show that you, and only you, has got the key to my heart, only you can unlock my heart. This key is yours, and so is my heart. My heart is yours, always has, always will." Nate says. Nate pulls the key necklace from the box and fastens it around Serena's neck, she smiles as she thinks to herself: I have his heart and he has mine.
Serena comes out of the memory when she feels a hand on her shoulder. It's Blair, her sister in every way but blood, smiling softly at her. "We're here, S." With help from Bart and Chuck, Serena gets out of the car, and is blinded by the dozen photographers wanting a glimpse of Nate Archibald's girlfriend.
XOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOX
Safely inside the building, Serena lets her eyes wander around the room that they're in.
The room looks just like it came out of a dream, her dream, the dream she had two years ago, the dream that brought her to the love of her life. Nate is standing there in a suit, standing in front of the fountain that is adorned with fairy lights.
"May I have this dance?" Nate asks her, holding out his hand for her to take. Serena slips her hand into his, the smile on her face dazzling.
One of Nate's hands encases her waist, while he keeps his other one in her hand, Serena's free hand goes to his shoulder, their eyes locked together, forgetting about their family and the photographers who are taking photos through the windows.
Music floats out of the surround sound stereo system that in the corner of the room, she's spun around by him, her blonde hair spinning behind her, she's twirling all around the room, her feet instinctively knowing the steps, as she keeps her eyes on Nate, the smile staying on both of their faces as they both pass their family who are all staring at them, recording the Upper East Side power couple on their phones.
Nate slows down the dancing, twirling his golden girl around the dance floor once more, letting her go, watching her spinning and hearing her laugh as she stops spinning, her hands flying to her mouth, her blue eyes filling with tears.
Nate is one knee, with a smile on his face, and a ring box in his hands.
"Serena Celia van der Woodsen, you're the first girl who I've always loved, you the only one who's ever truly held my heart, the only one who can break it a thousand times and makes grows even stronger each time you break it, you're the one who holds the key to my heart, like I said to you that morning two years ago, 'This key is yours, and so is my heart. My heart is yours, always has, always will and that's still true this day, no matter how much you push me away, I will you right beside me, no matter how far away you run, I will always follow you to the ends of the earth, like I said to you in your dream 'I love you, Serena van der Woodsen for all I am and all I will be, so, Serena Celia van der Woodsen, will you marry me and let me love you to my last dying breath and if there's a life after this one, will you let me love you even then, will you let me love you for all time? Because, like I've always said to you: you hold the key to my heart." Nate says passionately. Serena can only nod her head vigorously as tears fall down her face.
"Yes, yes, yes, I will marry you and let you love me for all time!" Serena says as Nate gets to his face, and slips the large diamond ring on her finger. Serena cradles Nate's face in her hands and kisses him, sealing her answer. Nate pulls away from his new fiancè and swings her around, laughing when she squeals in delight. Nate puts her on her feet and rests his head against hers, staring into her crystal blue eyes.
"Thank you for giving me the key to your heart, Nathaniel Archibald." Serena says, pecking his lips before she starts running around the ballroom, her giggles filling the room.
"Hey, get back here! I haven't finished kissing you yet!" Nate says, chasing her, Serena grabs her sister's hand and they both run around the, causing their men to chase them to get kisses, pretty soon their entire family is running around the ballroom, all of them trying to catch one another.
Nate catches his golden girl and wraps his arms around her waist from behind, pressing his lips to her cheek.
"Thank you for opening your heart to me." Nate whispers in her ear. Even though her can't see her, he knows she's smiling at his words.
"Thank you for giving me the key to yours." She replies to him softly, leaning against his chest.
All it took was a dance and a dream to make me realize that I love him, a dance that he made become real.
