A Brother's Love
He's only been asleep awhile but I know the nightmares have already started, his pained whimpering a testament to hell's torment.
As it worsens I can't ignore it. I scoot over to his bed, pull him into my arms. I know he'll hate me in the morning but right now I have to do this.
"Shh ... it's okay, I gotcha," I sooth, rocking him as he sobs, gripping my shirt, holding onto me as if his life depends on it.
Gradually the sobs subside, he stills, drifts back into a fitful sleep.
And I'll hold him until he wakes.
