'Tis the Season

"Can we get a pumpkin?"

Dean cringed, turning to look at his little brother's hopeful face. "Dad said no."

Not that I asked him, Dean admitted silently. It wasn't just their dad. Dean hated Halloween, hated the smell of burning leaves and the silly costumes.

Swinging their joined hands, Sam gestured toward the pumpkin stand. "Just this once?" Grinning, snaggle-toothed, he added, "We could carve it!"

"Sammy..."

Sam frowned, whispering, "Please Dean?"

Dean felt broken. He hated Halloween... but maybe Sam shouldn't have to for a little while longer. Maybe Dean didn't want him to hate it just yet.

"Okay."
