It was now ten a.m. and Edward was just falling asleep on the sofa in the living room to the sound of the TV.
His dreams were filled with wild and violent images. A car on a stormy road; blood; a cold room, a hand withdrawing the sheet that covered her body. Only it wasn't the face he expected to see. Dead, brown eyes were staring up at him, her face pale and lifeless.
He woke with a scream, bathed in sweat, breathing heavily.
Sitting up, he realised he was shaking pretty badly.
He was going mad; that's what it was.
What time was it even?
Three p.m.
His head hurt, and his mouth felt as if he'd eaten a hamster.
He sank back into the sofa, his eyes perusing last night's – well, this morning's – mess. The second bottle of Glenlivet was still almost full.
One last sip, he swore to himself.
.
"Let's just wait 'til the storm loosens up," Leah said. "It can't take forever, can it?"
"You don't mind driving in the dark?" Bella said.
"It's not that far."
"I'd rather wait, too," Jackie said. "We could go and have dinner somewhere until it clears up."
"Okay," Bella agreed, always one for responsible thinking and driving.
.
The pictures on the telly were horrible. A storm was coming in, and it was reaching the south coast, quickly.
Edward was overwhelmed by images of a slippery road from Brighton, with rain beating down on her car. Darkening skies.
His dream had not been a dream, but a premonition.
It was a cycle.
History was repeating itself, punishing him for not having used his second chance to the fullest.
The Gods were taking her from him because he had proven himself unworthy.
Edward tried to get up, but fell back upon the rug. He lay there like a beetle for a few moments.
He needed to call her. Tell her to stay where she was safe and to not take the risk.
He could wait.
This time, he would wait.
A hiccup escaped his lungs.
This could not, must not happen again.
He scrambled up once more, taking hold of the glass table, as he tried to lift himself up from the floor.
The next thing he knew there was a loud crash, and the smell of blood.
And then, everything went black.

Okay, I'm going to hide now…
