Watching her daughter study for the entrance exam for high school caused a tightening in Miyako's chest. Just like 25 years ago, when all her friends were studying for the entrance exam for high school, but she wasn't. She had dropped out of school and learned how to take care of a household, like her older sisters did. None of the Chosen Children liked the idea; they all worried about her divorcing her husband, or him dying in an accident. How would she support herself and children, they wondered. Miyako told them that she would work in the store with her brother if she needed money, and that her sisters' husbands would help too. Koushirou told Miyako that she had the potential to do great things, if she finished her education. She had done great things: she had had three wonderful children. Ken was the only one not to state his opinion. They weren't a couple yet. He only asked her one thing at the time: whether this was what she wanted for herself. When she answered yes, he was satisfied with that answer. Miyako sometimes wondered if she should have finished school. What type of career would she have had, whether she could have done great things, like Koushirou had said.
Chion's grunts for attention brought her back to the present. She picked up her youngest son and cuddled against him. Whenever she questioned her choice, all she had to do was see her children, and she knew she would never regret any decision that led to them.
