Silver and Gold
Summery: After Dumbledore's death, Professor McGonagall (sp?!) thinks that every student should have a best friend. She comes up with the perfect idea! It includes a masquerade ball, enemies, and shared dorms! (No one knows Draco was involved in the death of Dumbledore, so he's still at school, arrogant as ever) DM/HG
Disclaimer: I own nothing except the plot. (boo-hoo!)
Chapter One: The Introduction
Hermione opened her eyes drowsily. She yawned, rolled over, and looked at the clock next to her bed. 7:45! "Oh my gosh! I'm gonna be late for breakfast!"
She jumped out of bed, washed her face, brushed her teeth, brushed her hair, put on yesterdays robe, skirt, and shirt (they were, of course, perfectly clean, but still), grabbed her bag, and raced out of the dorm, down the stairs, and through the portrait hole. She jumped the trick step, then sprinted until, panting, she came to the opening of the great hall. She stopped for a minute to compose her, and then walked in. She sauntered over to the Gryffindor table, and sat down in her usual place between her best friends, Harry Potter and Ron Weasly. She filled her plate with food and ignored the questions they asked her. "Blimey, Hermione, where have you been? I've never seen you late before!" Ron stated.
"Yeah, what's wrong?" Harry agreed.
"Humph. Can't a girl be a little late once in a while? And anyway, since I AM the head girl, I am entitled to a few late mornings now and then, you know." She stated imperiously. She then went back to wolfing down her food and reading the 6-inch thick book on muggle's she had propped up against the milk jar. Boys!
Her reading was interrupted when Professor McGonagall, the new headmistress, signaled for everyone to quit down and listen. "I have an important announcement. In light of recent events, I find that in these difficult times everyone needs a friend. Because of this, I have decided that, with the help of the staff, we are going to hold a masquerade ball," She said.
"What's this have to do with finding a friend?" an anonymous questioner asked.
"Well, Mr. Thomas, I was getting to that part. At the ball, you will, of course, be anonymous. As you walk in, you will be handed a description of the person who will be your best friend, or (she added mysteriously), more. You will then be left to find your "friend" and then, at the end of the ball, you will remove your masks and see their faces, and, in turn, they will see yours. You will then leave the ball together. However, there ARE some things I need to tell you BEFORE the ball. First of all, don't assume who your "friend" is. It could be a member of a different house, gender, or species. Next, after the ball, you will be sharing classes and rooms with your "friend". And, of course, you will be monitored by the staff so that we will know if the experiment is working. Questions?"
A few hands rose in the air, but McGonagall only chose one person: Aaron Gorges. He asked "How will you know who we should have as our friend?"
Professor Sprout answered "well, when you were born, a prophecy was made about each of you, stating different things. One of them was who your spouse would be. That is how we will choose."
Everyone turned to their friends and started talking amongst themselves. Then the bell rang, and it was time for classes.
