Chapter 16: The Escape Part 2

I put my hands under Loki's armpits and let him use me as an armrest, as he slowly got on his knees, then to his feet. I gently helped him to his feet only aware of how tall he was once I was standing up and he was leaning slightly against me. He felt light but I could still feel his developed muscles through the rags he wore. He wobbled unsteadily as I took a step forward. "It's okay. I've got you." I said supporting half his body. Loki's breathing was harsh and he grunted as he put a foot in front of him, wincing as he did so. He grimaced when I lost my footing for a second and his knees bent further down. I carefully pulled him back up and we shuffled our way to the door until finally we reached the entrance to the cell. This is it. I thought. No turning back. I reached out to grasp the metal door handle and twisted it open.

The door opened silently, to my relief, to reveal an empty hallway. Oh, thank the Allfather, I prayed in my head, relieved that no one was in the hallways, at least not yet.

We stealthily made our way down the seemingly vacant halls, keeping our eyes out for anyone. We were fine until we reached the servant hallways. Once I noticed feet in my peripheral vision, I hurriedly yanked Loki against the wall and peeked around the corner. He made a noise as he hit the wall, the air whooshing out of his lungs. He coughed slightly, and then glared at me. I looked at him apologetically and mouthed 'I'm sorry', before peeking around the corner to see a male servant carrying a tray of food. "Shoot," I muttered, ducking my head back. If one servant was out and about, there were bound to be others. There's no way I'll be able to sneak Loki in, without getting caught. Think. Think. I closed my eyes and leaned my head back against the wall. There has to be a way to make this work. I thought, squeezing my eyes in concentration. An image of another hallway, popped up in my head. My eyes sprang open, and I quickly pulled Loki to a nearby door, careful of his injuries. It was plain and metal, not standing out. He looked at me quizzically, so I hurriedly explained, while opening the door. "This is a secret passageway I discovered one day. It leads straight to my room, and I use it whenever I can without being noticed, to avoid others.

Once inside, I shut the door and locked it, with a key I always kept hanging inside the passageway, and tried to calm my erratic heartbeat. That was close. Someone could have seen us, and then we both could've been executed. I shivered at the thought.

The hallway was dimly lit, with torches I had acquired from trading at various festivals over the years. They glowed light blue, the light reflecting off of us in eerie ways. I gulped nervously at Loki's imposing presence. The torches made him look like a dark creature from a bedtime story, mothers would tell to their children to make them behave. But I swallowed my fear and helped Loki forward, neither of us saying a word, as we left the soul consuming prison that no longer caged the God of Mischief.
