It was the very last day of the holidays. Oliver came over early to Tiannah's house, as her parents invited him over. As Tiannah ate her cereal, laughing with Hestia about something, he couldn't take his eyes off her. She was so very pretty, with her creamy skin and the way her lips would tip up into a smile that made her eyes light up. Oliver wished he didn't feel this way, but he did. He was going to tell her how he felt, but he couldn't stand losing her again.
Tiannah would look up at Oliver every now and then, and see him staring. She would smile and go back to her cereal, blushing slightly.
"Are you excited for Hogwarts?" Oliver asked when she caught his eye, embarrassed that he had been caught staring.
"Nervous, but yes," she replied. "Oh, and you better let me on the team if I'm a Gryffindor," she added with a grin. Oliver shifted uncomfortably. He hadn't thought far ahead about what Tiannah's possible arrival into Gryffindor might do to the dynamics of the team. She was certainly the best Chaser he knew, but he couldn't show any favouritism.
"Oliver Wood, don't you dare not let her on the team. She will be the best Chaser there!" Hestia said warningly, picking up on his body language.
"We already have all the members of the team, and it wouldn't be fair to hold tryouts after I guaranteed the team spots this year. I'm sorry, Tiannah."
Tiannah felt a rush of anger at his words. She thought it would be a given she would be allowed on the team – Oliver was her best friend and the captain. His words felt like a betrayal."
"Well, I wouldn't want to cause your captaincy any troubles," she snapped, getting up and storming out the door.
"I'm sorry; I didn't mean to make her angry," Oliver said to Jane and Daniel. Hestia flared up at his words.
"Well you did. In case you didn't realize, she is your best chance of winning. You just blew your only chances at finally winning the cup," she said angrily.
"Thanks, Hestia," Oliver muttered, standing up and pushing his chair and leaving in an angry huff. Hestia sighed angrily and turned to Tiannah's parents.
"Sorry about that, but that boy needs to sort out his priorities!" Hestia said to Jane and Daniel, but before they could get a word in, she spoke again.
"I'm going to find Tiannah, while Oliver goes off and sulks."
Jane and Daniel chuckled to themselves as she walked out the front door.
Oliver stalked home, hurt by what Hestia said. Tiannah was sitting by the lake in her yard, staring off into the distance. Hestia found Tiannah and joined her.
Before going to America, Tiannah always envisioned her and Oliver playing Quidditch alongside each other at Hogwarts. It was just a given. But now that it wasn't a possibility, Tiannah realised that the reason it upset her so was because it felt like a personal rejection, which hurt her in a way that nothing had hurt her before. Which lead her to a realisation that she wished she didn't have.
"You okay, Tiannah?"
"Yeah. I'm okay. Hestia..."
"Yes?"
"I... I think that I have a crush on Oliver," she admitted quietly.
Hestia started laughing.
"Yes! Finally! Yes! All these years, I've known, and finally you admit it!" she squealed.
"Hestia! Don't you dare tell him or anyone else for that matter!" Tiannah warned.
"Why ever not?" she questioned incredulously. "Oliver so obviously has a crush on you too!"
"No, Hestia, he doesn't. I don't want to have a crush on him," she groaned. "It complicates everything."
"What are you gonna do then?"
"I'll just wait and see if the crush goes away," Tiannah replied, burning her head in her hands. "It has to."
That evening, Tiannah was sitting on a couch in her living room, reading a book. There was a knock at the door, and Hestia went to answer it. She continued to read her book, which was the biography of a famous Quidditch player.
"Hey, Tiannah," a voice said softly. Tiannah looked up from her book at the sound of Oliver's voice. She sighed and closed her book, raising an eyebrow.
"What are you doing here?"
"Your parents invited us to dinner. I er, really want to apologise."
Tiannah felt butterflies form in her stomach at the kind, sincere way he was looking at her. She felt bad for snapping at him earlier; it wasn't his fault. He was just being a good and fair captain, as always.
"I understand. I was just disappointed. I wish you told me sooner."
"It didn't even cross my mind," he replied honestly. "I've just been so happy to have you back, I wasn't thinking about Hogwarts."
Tiannah blushed and smiled shyly. She opened her mouth to say something when her mother spoke from the kitchen.
"Dinners ready!"
Tiannah put her book down on the coffee table. "Well, now I kind of hope I'm not in Gryffindor," she said jokingly, making her way to the kitchen. "I really want to play."
Oliver threw her an apologetic glance as they entered the kitchen. Tiannah was disappointed about Quidditch, but it didn't take away from her excitement about starting at Hogwarts. She just hoped that her crush would go away and that she and Oliver could live out their initial dream of attending Hogwarts together as best friends. She didn't want something to get in the way of that again.
