Chapter LIV: Nautical Twilight.
Last Time.
Fawcett City May 15, 00:16.
Jesse sat huddled by the Zeta entrance of a broken picture box before hearing Granny Goodness. "I understand your grief. These so-called heroes, your so-called friends, are jealous of your strength and grace. Twice they've denied you power. The power that is your birthright. You owe them nothing, my dear, for they only seek to turn you into nothing."
"Into a nobody. Why listen to these petty fools who wish to keep you down? To force you to be unimpressive only that they might seem more impressive in the absence of your true glory. You must see there is no longer any need to obey their rules, their strictures. Advice they claimed to offer for your sake was always just a ploy to minimize you… To keep you small. Say it, child. Say the word. You know you want to." She finished as Jesse looked up and whispered.
"Shazam."
CRACK!
A bolt of lightning then hit her as a Boom Tube formed beside the smoke.
Now.
(Flashback… A/N: Even though this Ep is a flashback, it won't be Italic.)
The Watchtower April 19, 21:17 EDT.
"You okay?"
Dick asked Kaldur as they stared at Superboy's hologram in the grotto. "It is hard. We have done our duty. Notified Conner's friends and family, attended multiple memorial services, and the lighting of this hologram. Yet, it still does not seem real."
"You should take a break."
They turned to see Naruto in jeans and a black shirt walking up to them. "You know, when Tula died, you never had time to mourn. Instead, you immediately went undercover with Black Manta."
"And when Wally died, I was a total jerk, and dumped the whole team on you, not thinking about your grief at all." Dick picked up after Naruto. "And Aquaman resigned, and you not only took up his mantle but led the Justice League through some of its darkest hours. And now Conner? Kaldur, you've always been the leader when Naruto wasn't, the adult, the rock we all lean on, but maybe you need to take a break before all this breaks you."
"No, I will be fine," Kaldur said as he looked at the holograms. "I have to be. Thank you for your concern, but I have a conference tomorrow in Poseidonis which I must prepare for."
Kaldur then walked away as Naruto walked up to Dick. "Give him time… I don't think Jeff will give him work for a while."
"Can you-!"
"No, this is something he's gotta do himself… Can't push people through something like this." Naruto interrupted Dick as he crossed his arms.
S'atiroman Cave April 20, 01:11 UTC-2.
In a cave, an Atlantean male with fair skin, long blonde hair, and a 5 o'clock shadow sat before hearing a man speak in Atlantean.
"Thank you, Danuuth..."
Danuuth turned to see Ocean Master behind him. "For coming here tonight… And for your loyalty."
Poseidonis April 20, 15:16 UTC-2.
In a meeting room, Orin sat beside Mera who was in a green bodysuit and sleeves as she sat beside a mermaid with fair skin and long brown hair in a braided ponytail.
She sat beside an Atlantean Shark who was muscular and shirtless.
Beside him is a female Atlantean with fair skin and short brown hair. She's wearing a blue top showing her pregnant stomach and dark blue pants.
Beside her is an empty seat and on the other side is a man with fair skin and short blonde hair, He's wearing a green body suit with gold highlights.
Beside him is an Atlantean with a squid-like head who's short and wearing a dark blue bodysuit.
And finally, beside him is Kaldur's dad.
"We share a common tongue with many dialects," Mera said as she stood. "In the interest of ensuring there is no confusion between us… Please allow me to bring us together." She then had tattoos appear as she spoke a spell that allowed everyone to understand each other clearly.
(A/N: Since they are speaking without subtitles from this point, I'll only use Underline for the times they use subtitles in the Eps.)
"Delegates of the great city-states of Atlantis, I welcome you to the opening ceremonies of our annual conference," Orin said as he stood beside his wife. "Since we have new faces here, allow me to introduce my cabinet. Mera Nereus, Princess of Xebel, Queen of Atlantis, Headmistress of the Conservatory of Sorcery, and Minister of Magic." He then turned to those standing to his left as Aquaman swam in.
"Vulko of Poseidonis, Minister of Science. Commander Ondine of Poseidonis, Minister of Security. Garth of Crastinus, Minister of Diplomacy. And Kaldur'ahm of Shayeris, Aquaman of the Justice League, and Minister of Justice. And now, if the delegates would be so kind."
A light came on the char of the man with short blonde hair. "I am Lord Ronal of Crastinus in the Arctic Ocean."
Beside him, the chair lit up before the squid Atlantean spoke. "Prime Minister Topo of Lemuria in the North Pacific."
The light went to the woman with short brown hair. "Emissary Coral of Neptunos in the South Pacific."
The light then went to the shark. "I am Nanaue Sha'ark, King of Nanauve and the Southern Ocean."
The light went to the mermaid. "General Lori Lemaris of Tritonis in the Indian Ocean."
Then the light went to Calvin. "First Citizen Calvin Durham of Shayeris in the North Atlantic."
"And from Xebel in the South Atlantic, no one," Ronal said as the empty chair lit up.
"Xebel insults us with this absence. I'm leaving." Sha'ark said standing up as Topo stood as well.
"Seems a shame to depart without accomplishing anything." He said before Orin raised his hands at that.
"My friends, I am certain the delegate from Xebel will join us by the time the conference proper begins tomorrow. We did have plans for this day, but let us adjourn. We invite you all to sample the pleasures of Poseidonis."
Everyone swan off at that as Sha'ark growled. "See how Orin flaunts the wealth of Poseidonis to shame us."
Orin then put a hand on his wife's shoulder. "You must contact your father again. He must send someone. Anyone who can be here by tomorrow."
"I will try."
Outside, Artur swam with La'gann as Sha'lain'a, and Dolphin was below them. "Artur, help me. I'm completely surrounded."
"Never fear, La'gaan. Aquaboy will save you."
Artur swam up just as Coral swam out as the two swam down. "Neptune's beard. You saved me, Aquaboy. You're a hero."
"Hi. How did it go?" La'gann asked Coral, who smiled.
"As expected. And, as expected, you are going to be a wonderful father." She said as he put his hands on her stomach.
"You'll do all right," Artur said from behind them as his parents swam out.
"We appreciate you keeping an eye on the prince," Orin said as La'gann smiled.
"He was keeping an eye on me."
"Aquaboy keeps his eyes on everyone," Artur said before Mera kissed him on top of his head.
"I will see you back at the palace."
She then swam off as Artur looked at his father. "Where's Mother going?"
"To talk to your grandfather."
"Uh-oh."
"Uh-oh, indeed. Come on." Orin said before swimming off with his son.
"Up for a night on the town?" Lori asked, swimming up to the others.
"A short one. I get tired." Coral replied as she, La'gann, and Lori swam with Ronal following.
"Lori, General Lemaris, wait."
Kaldur and his father swam up to Wyynde. "You are off duty?"
"For the night, yes." He replied as they turned to see Dolphin talking to Sha'lain'a
"A year ago, I never would have believed I could have this life."
"What say you show Delphis around?" Sha'lain'a asked Kaldur. "She rarely gets to see Poseidonis."
"Uh, Sha'lain'a, I'm sure Kaldur and Wyynde-!" Delphis was interrupted by Wyynde.
"Would love to host you."
"It would be our pleasure. Always."

Conner woke up revealing he, as well as the surrounding area is blue and purple aside from his sclera which is black, and red eyes. He also has burns over his body. Whoa, that bomb really knocked me for a loop. Donna? Donna, where are you?" He asked looking around to see the floating rocks and surfaces. "Uh…" He then saw an unconscious Phantom Girl by him. "Hey... Hey, are you okay?"
He asked, trying to touch her. Only for his hand to phase through her body. He then used his infrared "Ma'al. No heat signatures for either of us. That's impossible. Unless… Are we dead?"
Gotham, April 21, 04:36 EDT. (1.)
Naruto was watching men at the docks from the rooftops with binoculars before looking back to see Batman and Argent. "What are you doing here?"
"Predawn. The dockyards. Where else would a person in a mask be?" Argent replied as Naruto looked back. "If I needed you, I'd have called."
"Smugglers?" Batman asked, having Naruto look back.
"Gunrunners out of South America. The only cucumbers in those crates are .30 caliber." He replied before a box truck came up to the men. "And here come the bag boys now. If you'll excuse me…" Naruto dropped down and went to the docks.
He quickly took out all but one man who ran around a container. Naruto ran after and past Batman who thumbed to his right. "He's all yours.
Once getting around the bend, Naruto saw the man was tied up. "A gift."
Naruto turned and saw Cheshire behind him. She blew a kiss and jumped away.
Later that night, Naruto was looking at another building in the city as a bald man in a white suit walked out and up to the railing.
"Enrique El Gancho. Ricky the Hook."
He turned to see Cheshire beside him as she continued. "Used to be an enforcer down in Colombia. You're welcome, by the way."
"I would've had the guy." Naruto bit back as she leaned against him.
"Maybe. So, what are we doing here, anyway?"
"I'm following a lead," Naruto explained as Ricky went back inside. "Seems the Hook was running last night's show."
"And you'd like to find out what else he's up to."
"Something like that," Naruto said as he saw men patrolling the area.
"A patrol. Going to be tricky. I'II tell you when we can move." She said standing up. And had a breeze blow her dress up slightly flashing Naruto her panties. "Now!"
"Hey!" Naruto yelled as she jumped and used a grapnel to swing over as he followed.
They then went inside the building and up to a desk. "Here they are. His shipping schedules." Naruto said going to his computer and typed on it.
"Good man." Cheshire leaned on his back as she looked over his shoulder.
"Just have to transfer... There. Let's go." He stood as he pulled a flash drive out of the computer and disappeared in a flash.
He reappeared in the clock tower and put it in his computer. After going through several files, he spoke up. "He keeps referring to a woman named Angelitos, Spanish for "little angels." Now, look.
"The shipping schedules."
"Over here. A ship called Little Angels is due today at Pier 21." Naruto pointed at the holo-screen as she hummed.
"From Buenos Aires."
"I think it's the big drop I've been hearing about all week."
"I was looking for something to do tonight." She purred before they got up.
After getting to Pier 21, they saw a ship before getting on and hid from the guards. After knocking several out, they opened one of the fruit crates and saw a statue inside. "Strange fruit." Naruto joked before Cheshire looked up as they saw more statues. "He's smuggling artifacts. Looting his country's heritage for his own profit."
He then called the League and cops to arrest the men and Ricky who was on the ship.
Poseidonis April 20, 16:02 UTC-2.
"Ah, this is amazing."
Delphis said as they swam in the city. "Poseidonis is much shinier than Shayeris. That is one source of trouble between the city-states, is it not? The conflict between the haves and have-nots?" She asked as the other two shared a look. "Mm, I saw the same thing in Mumbai."
"Indeed. Bridging those gaps is one of King Orin's greatest challenges." Kaldur spoke before Wyynde looked at him.
"Save politics for the conference. Algae, anyone?" He asked, gesturing to a bar below them.
They swam in and ordered drinks before a waitress came over with three glasses containing pods. "Three orders of Black Gold. Enjoy."
"Thank you, Minkis. We will." Wyynde said as Delphis picked up her glass.
"Uh, how do I..."
"Simply squeeze and chew," Kaldur explained as he picked up a pod, and squeezed it showing black and gold glowing algae.
She did the same before looking over. "Whoa! It's good."
"Go easy," Kaldur said to her. "Wyynde always orders the hard stuff."
"Why bother with anything else?" He asked as they looked to see Lori sitting at the bar as Delpis spoke.
"It is still hilarious that one can get drunk on algae." She said before Kaldur looked at Wyynde.
"I should go say hello."
"We all should," Wyynde said before the three swam over as Lori turned to see them.
"Kaldur'ahm."
"Lori Lemaris. Allow me to introduce you to our friend, Delphis." He greeted as Lori got up to hold Delphis' hands.
"Hello, Delphis, lovely to meet you."
"You look well, Lori," Wyynde spoke having Lori turn to speak to him
"And you look the same, Wyynde. Like an eel eager to slither back to Orm now that he has escaped from prison."
"Lori, please, that was ten years ago," Kaldur spoke as he looked at her. "Wyynde was young, impressionable."
"An idiot. A Purist idiot. I am ashamed of my actions, even my thoughts, back then. And someday I hope to prove to you that I have changed."
"Well, if Kaldur loves you, I suppose there's hope." She said before Sha'ark swam in.
"Well, if it isn't the little General."
"Get drunk somewhere else, Sha'ark." She bit back, having him chuckle.
"Finally, you show some teeth. If only the rest of Tritonis had your mettle when I annexed its lower territory."
"You attacked without provocation."
"Weakness is its own provocation, chum." He said before she raised a hand and shot a blast at him.
"Ah-poh-shohn!"
He hit the back wall before getting up to swim back. "Now, this is my kind of diplomacy."
Kaldur then uppercuts him before speaking. "Stop this! We are here to put old conflicts behind us. Save your grievances for the delegates' table. You must not forget, we were all friends and schoolmates once."
"Hm. I respect your strength, schoolmate, but don't hold out too much hope for tomorrow's conference." Sha'ark spoke before swimming out. "Our High King needs more than a translation spell to understand our grievances."
"For once, I am forced to agree," Lori said as she watched the shark man leave.
Happy Harbor April 21, 07:55 EDT.
Violet watched Samad leave the house before walking up and knocked on the door. Madia answers and is surprised to see what was once her daughter. "Gabrielle? No, I mean Violet."
"I had no wish to startle you, mo... Madia… Mrs. Daou, or Dr. Daou."
"Uh, it's fine," Madia spoke to her.
"I know it must be strange to see-"
"Yes, strange. But I'm glad you came. I wanted to thank you. I believe Samad and I owe our visas to you." Madia said to Violet who looked down for a second.
"Oh, it was Secretary General Fury."
"Who only knew about us because of you, correct? Please, come in." Madia let Violet in and to the kitchen where she made them drinks.
"Thanks."
"You just missed Samad."
"Did I?" Violet asked, gripping the mug. "Um, how is he?"
"He has a new job on a fishing boat. This child of the desert has never fished a day in his life, but he seems to love it."
"And how are you doing?"
"Well, I was an eye surgeon in Qurac before the war," Madia explained as she sat. "Now I sell sunglasses at the Sunglass Igloo. I'm hoping my medical credentials will transfer, but for now, it's a living. Is... There a reason you came by?"
"The thing is, I know Gabrielle's faith was very important to her, and I wanted to explore whether Islam might hold meaning for me," Violet explained, surprising Madia.
"Uh... Oh? Well, I'd love to help you. What would you like to know?"
Poseidonis, April 21, 19:58 UTC-2.
"Was he really the best we could get?" Orin asked Mera as they looked at the table.
And saw a young male that resembles a Caucasian male teen with the tail of a whale. He is slightly overweight, and has blue eyes, wearing a blue and purple Atlantean pontifical vestment, complete with a purple mitre with gold trimmings on his head, and purple fabric streaming from it along his front and back.
"It was all I could do to get my father to send him." She said before going to the table where the others sat before he spoke.
"I hereby call this conference to order and welcome the delegate from Xebel. Bishop Beluga." Beluga's chair lit up as he opened his mouth.
"King Nereus continues to mock us by sending one so insignificant," Sha'ark spoke, interrupting Beluga as Lori looked over.
"More experienced leaders would be here if Nanauve wasn't killing them in raids staged across our borders."
"I'll take that as a compliment."
"We have lost some of the old guard to a recent battle," Orin spoke up from his seat before Mera spoke up after him looking at Lori and Sha'ark.
"While others have voluntarily stepped down in accordance with our teachings and prophecies."
"We are here to discuss many issues, including increased hostility between our borders, and inside our algae bars," Orin said, looking over at Kaldur who looked surprised, unintentionally interrupting Beluga. "But we must remain civil if we hope to find solutions."
"Nanauve's incursions upon the territories-" Lori stopped as Sha'ark spoke up once again and interrupted Beluga.
"Our waters are warming, thanks to your surface friends, Orin. It's killing my kingdom's krill, the backbone of our food chain. Nanauve must take more territory to survive.
"Keep moving or die?" Ronal asked Sha'ark who nodded.
"Exactly!"

Conner knelt beside Phantom Girl before feeling his chest and felt his heartbeat. "No, I can't be dead. I can feel my heartbeat, so I'm alive unless heartbeats are just a ghostly habit. But you've got one too. And you're breathing. So if we're both alive, why can't I touch you? I mean, the ground feels solid enough or is that just because I took it for granted? Did I take for granted that you are a ghost I can't touch?" He asked before reaching for her once again. "Maybe if I believe you're solid."
And touched her before picking her up. "Okay, then. Tell you what. I'll believe you're alive if you believe I'm alive. Deal?" He asked before looking up at the rocks and asteroids floating around. "Um...
Happy Harbor April 21, 08:16 EDT.
"I'm searching for answers to so many questions, but maybe we can start with the hijab," Violet asked as they both started cutting up vegetables for a pot. "Gabrielle wore it, and I've been reluctant to stop, but I don't know why. Why do you wear it?"
"Like most things of import, the hijab is many things to many people. Different Muslim women wear it for different reasons, and some don't wear it at all. Personally, I choose to wear the hijab as a constant and comforting reminder of my faith. A reminder that life on Earth is temporary. And I must use my time wisely to do good and be the best person I can be. I imagine it's not unlike the reasons why your super friends wear such a variety of symbols. Isn't that true, Halo?"
She asked, getting Violet's eyes to widen. "Uh... You know? Of course, you know. You saw the footage from Markovia last year."
It was hard to miss-Agh!" She yelled, cutting her hand before Violet grabbed it and healed it.
"Ah! This is your gift. It's..."
"A work in progress. Healing other people is difficult. But I'm trying." Violet explained before going back to cutting before Madia spoke.
"Trying is all any of us can do. With the hijab, I try to invite others to focus on more than my outer appearance, to look past the unrealistic standards of society and see the woman I am inside."
"I would like to be judged on who I am inside, but would that still work if I wasn't exactly a woman?" Violet asked, confusing Madia.
"What do you mean?"
"I just have so many questions. Would it be all right to continue to wear the hijab while I seek answers?"
"Many Muslim women, especially young women like you, begin wearing the hijab inspired by family or tradition, before deciding why or whether it matters to them. In the end, you must follow your heart." Madia said before going back to cutting her carrots.
Poseidonis April 21, 19:17 UTC-2
"Climate change and pollution from the surface are devastating our oceans."
Topo spoke, raising his hands before Sha'ark looked at Garth. "Thought your embassy was supposed to fix that."
"It is my highest priority. But too many surface dwellers are foolish and stubborn, obsessed with short-term economic concerns that blind them to the larger issues facing our planet."
"We have larger issues down here," Calvin said from his seat. "I left the surface world because a lack of opportunity created an anger which Black Manta was eager to exploit."
"Yes, yes. We all know your history." Ronal said resting his head on his hand before Sha'ark looked over.
"How you betrayed Manta, took his woman, and raised his son as your own."
Kaldur then came up with that. "Let me be clear, my biological father is immaterial. Calvin Durham is my father in every way that matters."
"Indeed. For how else does a man of his low status and dubious history merit this table were he not father to the great Kaldur'ahm." Ronal said before Lori looked over.
"Ronal, can you please, for one minute, stop being such a pompous codfish." She said getting him to look down and over at Calvin.
"I... I'm sorry. I meant no offense."
"Everything said of me is true. My absence of options on land caused me to make bad choices. Now I see many of the same problems in Shayeris that I saw in my native San Diego. The wealth that begets opportunity, seen on easy display in Poseidonis is largely absent from the other cities." Calvin said having Sha'ark nod at that.
"Aye, that we can agree on."
"I appreciate your directness, all of you," Orin said looking around. I will not pretend the way forward will be easy, but my Cabinet and I believe we have viable solutions if we work tog-!"
Boom!
A laser hit the table causing an explosion before Orin looked up to see Orem pointing his trident at the group.
Unknown -;-.
"Maybe we are dead."
Conner asked as he sat on a rock and looked at the still-unconscious Phantom Girl. "Maybe this is some sort of Kryptonian afterlife. You're not Kryptonian, are you? Hmm. Don't even know your name. I gotta call you something, maybe Ghosty? Yeah, everyone tells me I suck at naming. Still, it's better than "Coma Girl," right? What am I babbling about? I need to get you help and there's none here. So I guess we keep moving." He said before picking her up and looked around.
"But which way? There's only mist and rocks for miles in every direction. Except… In the infrared." Turning said vision on, Conner looked to see a heat trail. "A heat trail. That's something anyway. What do you think, Ghosty?" He asked, looking down. "My sentiments exactly."
Poseidonis April 21, 19:19 UTC-2.
Ocean-Master unleashes a great blast of energy, damaging many buildings. Mera attempts to stop him, but her attack is easily swayed back. "Brother, you have made a grave error," Orin said, swimming over.
"Do not think of me as your brother, Orin. I am sure I do not."
Orin attacks Ocean-Master but is shocked after grabbing the trident. Lori magically throws rocks at Ocean-Master, but he destroys them, then blasts back a group of charging attackers.
"Rodunn!" Coral yelled seeing a merman guard fall.
"Coral, please! The baby!" Topo grabbed her arm at that.
"Rodunn is hurt. I must go to my husband."
Outside the building, La'gann swims inside. "Move! My wife and husband are there." He then got up to Coral who was healing Rodunn. "Coral is he… Is the baby."
"We will all be fine if Ocean-Master is stopped."
"The trident's too powerful. I can't maintain my construct." Wyynde said as he shipped magic to capture Ocean-Master.
Once assured Coral and Rodunn are alright, La'gann joins the fight, just as Ocean-Master is able to break free. Delphis creates a bright light to blind Ocean-Master before he can kill Kaldur, leaving him open to attack from La'gaan. La'gaan lands a couple of good hits but is blasted back. Ocean-Master is ready to cull his foes when he is suddenly blasted by powerful magic energy. "Who dares?"
He looked to see a cloaked man shooting him back with gold magic before creating a blinding light to escape.
Happy Harbor April 21 08:46 EDT.
"What is Islam?"
Violet asked as they sat at the table again. "Again, like all faiths, it is many things to many people. And the Muslim community is hardly monolithic. But the basic tenets are not complicated. There is no God but God. No God but the creator of heaven and the earth and everything in between."
"I met one who called herself a god," Violet said from her seat. "She had tremendous power, but was abusive, petty, spiteful, greedy, destructive, poisonous."
"Then she was not a god. She was not God. God would never cause such pain and hardship, nor condone such abuse."
"Then what is God? In our teachings, God has 99 names, including Al-Rahim, The Most Compassionate. Al-Ra'uf, The Most Merciful, and Al-Hafiz, The Protector. These are all attributes you may reflect upon should you continue this journey. I found I was proud of you for turning down King Brion's offer to be his queen. I believe you are on a good path, and I believe I would like to see where this path leads you. Wherever it leads you." Madia said to Violet.
Poseidonis April 21 09:47 UTC-2.
Ronal helped Lori up from the rubble. "Thank you. Where's the man who saved us?"
"Who was he?" Coral asked as she was helped by guards.
"He had power. True power." Sha'ark said before Mera looked at Orin.
"Orin, the Prophecy."
"We'll discuss it later. Poseidonis needs us."
"Are you alright?" Wyynde asked Kaldur who nodded.
"I am fine. I have to be. Ocean-Master is out there and we must find him."
S'atiroman Cave April 21 21:39 UTC-2.
"Who was that man?"
Ocean-Master asked, throwing his trident at his throne. "Who in all the Seven Seas could command such power and defeat me?"
"I do not know, but please calm yourself. You are injured. And in the end, you will triumph, my Prince." Danuuth said, backing away.
"Do not call me Prince! I reject that title. Now and forever, I am Orm, the Ocean Master."
Happy Harbor April 21, 18:22 EDT.
Harper sat with Violet on the deck as Naruto was cooking on a grill. "So… How did it go with Madia?"
"It went well, but the search for any answer reminds me of how many more questions I have."
"Like what?"
"I have been considering my gender. And I believe it's time I decide upon my preferred pronouns." Violet said, having Harper nod.
"Okay, cool. Uh, what are you thinking?"
"I'm not sure. I am not troubled by her and her. Yet, perhaps they and them are a better fit for me?"
"The whole point is for you to decide what fits you best," Harper said with a smile.
"Hmm. Aside from the fact that I am the sum of both Gabrielle and Motherbox, I feel my true gender is non-binary neither just female nor just male. So I believe I prefer 'they.'"
"That's great! World, allow me to introduce you to Violet Harper."
"Couldn't care less!"
"Who asked you?" Harper said over her shoulder at Naruto.
"Look, just don't attack anything that calls you a girl and I'm fine. You won't change anyone if the first thing you do is insult them, or belittle/attack them," Naruto replied as he flipped the burger he was cooking. "And don't talk to your father like that!"
"Father!?"
"Yeah, I legally adopted you and Cullen today as the papers went through," Naruto replied looking over his shoulder.
