As the limo pulls up to Clark and Willow's new apartment, I can't help but shake my head over the whole situation. It's been a few weeks now, but I still cannot wrap my head around the fact that Clark Kent is married. He's still just a kid. And now matter how nice of a young woman Ms. Rosenberg seems to be, she's not what I imagined in a partner for Clark.
Of course, I guess that what's happens when you drink as much as he did that night. I've woken up to some partners whom I never would have chosen if I had been sober, so I can't judge him to harshly.
Then again, I've never ended up married to one of my one-night stands.
On the other hand, I did end up marrying Helen, who tried to have me killed. And I can't even blame that mistake on alcohol. Just on bad judgment. And of course my bastard of a father.
My taste in women seems to have improved, though. The lovely Chloe Sullivan sitting across from me is a testament to that. She may be more than a little challenging at times, but I doubt she'll drug me and put me on a doomed plane anytime soon.
The limo door opens and Willow comes in, followed by Clark. Willow looks beautiful, in a classy up simple black dress. Drunken mistake or no, Clark has managed to catch himself a rather incredible woman.
Clark, on the other hand, looks uncomfortable in his suit. I doubt he's worn it any other time then his high school graduation. It's not that he looks bad; I don't think I've ever seen Clark look bad. But the suit actually makes him look younger somehow. Or maybe it's the slightly terrified look in his eyes that has been there since the marriage that makes him look young.
"Clark, Willow, I'm glad you decided to join us tonight."
"I figured we could use a night out," Willow says as she takes the seat across from Chloe. "I love your dress, Chloe. It looks fantastic on you."
Willow's right. It does look fantastic on her. As she and Willow chat about dresses, I eye her appreciatively. It's a red dress, low cut, but not whorish. And it shows off some of her most pleasing features.
Features that Willow seems to be pairing more than a little attention too. I frown slightly. I'm more than a little protective of the woman that I date, even if it is married women who are checking them out.
"Thanks again for the dinner invitation," Clark's voice pulls me away from studying Willow and Chloe interact. "Willow wasn't exactly excited by the idea of another dinner with my parents."
"Is she still not getting along with them?" I ask.
"I get along just fine with his mom. It's Mr. Kent who is the problem," Willow says, looking up from her conversation with Chloe.
Chloe grins, "Yeah. I think Lex might not be the most hated person in Clark's life anymore."
"I'm sure I'm still number one on Jonathan's Kent's hate list. After all, I'm the one who arranged the little trip to Vegas."
"He doesn't hate either of you."
Chloe, Willow, and I all just turn and stare at Clark, neither of us saying a word.
He looks down at the floor of the car, blushing. "Okay, so maybe he does a little."
"A little?" Willow laughs. "Clark, he thinks I'm an evil harlot who tricked his son into getting married. I'm sure in his mind it's all part of some nefarious scheme."
"Arranged by me, no doubt," I add.
"That's my boyfriend. The evil mastermind." Chloe grins, "Hey, Clark. You're dad doesn't know I'm dating Lex, does he?"
Clark shakes his head, "No. He's pretty protective of you, Chloe. I figured he didn't need any more ammunition."
"At least there are a few people in your life your father doesn't hate," Willow says. "The perfectly beloved Chloe Sullivan. Every father's dream for his son."
Willow lays a hand on Chloe's thigh, and though it's a friendly action, and could be perfectly innocent, I can't help but clench my jaw when it happens. Especially when Chloe covers Willow's hand with her own, and squeezes it slightly.
"Oh believe me, I've had problems with Jonathan Kent before. I get a little more nosey than he would like sometimes."
"Chloe Sullivan: reporter extraordinaire," Willow adds. "I'm not surprised."
"But you know how much my parent's adore you, Chloe. You're like a daughter to them."
The conversation turns to small talk and continues that way until we get to the restaurant. The trip is pleasant enough, but I can't help but notice the attention Willow pays to Chloe, and to Chloe's body.
We enter the restaurant and I notice the other's eye's go a wide at the opulence of it. It's refreshing being with people who aren't jaded to the finer things in life. This is one of the finest establishments in Metropolis. And it really is beautiful. I suppose I just don't notice it anymore. But Willow, Chloe and Clark, certainly do. And as they take in the exquisitely done décor, I decide it's time to do take care of something that's been bothering me for the last hour.
With Clark and Chloe distracted for the moment, I take Willow arm and lead her a few feet away.
"Mrs. Kent," I begin, my voice low.
"Seriously, you need to call me Willow. Besides, I've decided to stick with Rosenberg. Mrs. Kent just sounds weird. It's what I call Clark's mom."
Fair enough, but I'm not about to allow myself to be distracted now.
"Willow, then. Is it possible, Willow, that you spent the entire limousine ride over here staring at my girlfriends breasts?"
Willow turns red and looks at the floor.
"...Yeah?..."
"May I ask why?"
"...'Cause they're pretty?..."
For an instant I have to fight to keep the smile off of my face, but then I gain control.
"Willow," I begin, but she cuts me off.
"Look, Lex. I'm sorry. You really don't have to worry about me trying to move in on Chloe. I've got enough on my plate right now dealing with this whole marriage thing. And even if I didn't, Chloe is with you and I respect that. It's not like she has any interest in girls anyway. And in case you haven't noticed, she's pretty much fallen head-over-heels for you.
But you've got to understand something, Lex. I'm married to a guy that I don't love, and don't even really know. My life pretty much sucks right now. But Chloe is becoming a good friend, and I'm going to spend time with her. And there's no way that I can be around her and not notice that she's really attractive. But I guess I didn't notice quite how obvious I was being. It's obviously making you uncomfortable. And is probably weirding her out as well."
She bits her lip and glances over to make sure Clark and Chloe are still out of earshot. "I am sorry, Lex."
I watch Chloe and Clark for a second before answering. The light shines off of Chloe's hair, and then she turns and catches my eye, a beautiful smile spreading across her face. For one of the first times in my life, I have something to be truly happy about. I really do feel sorry for Willow.
"All I ask is that you tone if down a little."
"I will."
As we walk back to join Clark and Chloe, I turn to Willow and smile slightly. "And you're right. They are pretty."
