-1Zhegorz: Teething
"Why is he so loud Nurse?" Jamay asked the Nurse, wincing as Zhegorz's cries continued. "He won't stop!"
"I'll show you, young sir." The Nurse said, picking up the five month old Zhegorz and propping him on her knee. He leaned against her, wailing. The Nurse inserted her fingers in is mouth, making him "smile." "See? The poor dear's teething." She said, shaking her head in sympathy. Zhegorz's gums had little white teeth poking out.
"Teething?"
"His teeth are growing in." Nurse explained with a smile.
"Oh. And it hurts?" Jamay asked, not really intending the question to be answered as he stared at his little brother, now whimpering as he chewed on the Nurse's finger with gusto.
"It does, to him. For all we know, it's just be an annoyance if it happened to us." Nurse said, eyes lost in a far-away stare. Jamay thought she might be thinking of her own child, born dead. "For when you're as young as sir's brother, you don't know pain and you don't know the world. But, for everyone that changes. And, really, everyone should be happy in their only little time of ignorance, whimpering over teething. Because sooner or later, reality there to throw cold water in your face."
Jamay listened to this small speech, young mind taking in the Nurse's words. It certainly coincided with what he had been taught.
"Ay, me, but you did let me go on, eh? Say, would you like to hear the story of a knight?" The Nurse said, breaking out of her reverie with a grin. "A knight who had a giantess fall in love with him?"
"Oh, yes Nurse!" Jamay said enthusiastically, wanting his favourite tale once more.
The Nurse settled Zhegorz on her knee and started the story of Raoul of Goldenlake. The two boys heard the story, and while only one laughed, both understood.
