The instant she tells them Jack stayed behind to give them all a chance, he knows she's lying. It's in her face, in every line of her body, in her tear-filled eyes.
But he won't question her, won't push it -- can't, simply because if he speaks, he will make demands, accusations, and even now, he cannot bear to bring her more pain.
He stayed behind. To give us a chance. And she would not meet his eyes.
And what of the kiss? That kiss he witnessed, that he was sure she had not meant for him to see. What of that?
So, she chooses the pirate after all. Elizabeth...if there were any way, any way at all for me to return him to you, I would. I would spare you this...
But he does not say it, and he does not reach for her, to hold her in her grief, because his own heart is too broken.
End
