A short life, but a merry one.

"Too much! Too much!" Avery cried, running towards her bedroom. Her father had gotten drunk yet again, and decided he didn't like Avery - yet again. She ran as fast as she could, ignoring the sound of smashing bottles coming from his office. He's be upstairs soon enough.

"Please, no!" She cried, locking the door behind her. As fast as she could, she worked to pry open the window, in hopes of escape. Soon enough, there was a pounding on the door. Avery's hands shook as she twisted the locks on the window, trying desperately with her struggling fingers to free herself. "Please!" She cried again.

But it was too late, and she turned back in time to face her father as he stumbled angrily in the room.

This was nothing new - no, but every night it happened it seemed as if it was. It's not something you ever get used to, no matter what they say.

"Miss Silver, it's time to wake up." Avery groaned and rolled over in the bed that she had collapsed in last night. He limbs were sore, and her arms ached. She noticed a sore spot on her neck, and realized there was a bruise. "Jenise, please, put my hair down again today."

The maid nodded and did as she was told - she was always doing what she was told, never asking questions. As Jenise tied the laces of the corset, Avery sighed. It was a new day - a new day for change. And every day, Avery managed to awake with the hope that maybe, just maybe, today would be different.

"No day but today." Avery whispered, just like every other day.

"Miss Silver, should we go width he blue dress today? Or perhaps green?" Jenise asked, patiently awaiting her choice. With Avery's blonde hair and green eyes, they always said red wouldn't work too well, and that's why she chose it. Anything to piss them all off.

"Red, Jenise. I've a meeting with Draco today; and we all know he hates red." Jenise laughed as she helped her get dressed.

"Perhaps things would be easier, Miss, if you just cooperated with the men?"

"Yes, Jenise, and I'll proceed to do so the day you tell my father you quit."

The girls exchanged glances, and laughed. They both knew they were trapped, but they still tried to laugh. After all, they weren't dead yet.

The first time I ran into Jack Sparrow, I fell in love. The second time I met up with him, I fell in two. He had no idea of any of my feelings, and I could never let him. But still, I looked forward to his visits, though they were rare. He and my father did trading, since my father had nothing against pirates, so long as they brought him good business.

One day, my father realized my affection for Jack Sparrow, and he sent me away. "Jenise, a job as a maid will teach you," he had said, "at the Silver Manor." I was furious with him for separating us, but I understood eventually. He was protecting me, and helping me move on.

After Avery left for her meeting with Draco, I noticed the black sails on the horizon. And I knew it - Jack was back.

But what did it matter to me?

Little did I know, but Avery had seen those same sails, and they had a different affect on her, altogether.
