Eyes of earth, eyes of roots, eyes of years long past; rough, knot-like fingers, stained with wood-grain; fingers that shine in the night with a strange glow: melted gold that has already begun to cool.

"Tell me," she says while she plays with these curious fingers, "tell me about this world before the arrival of flowers, about this world before the songs of the wind. Tell me about the time when there only existed you and the sky, you and the earth."

He laughs and pats her on the head.

"Child, princess, that story will take a long, long time to tell. Maybe even years. Are you sure that you want to know it, that you want to hear it?"

She smiles and hugs the faun, feeling his rough arms beneath her hands, arms dressed in bark with a spicy odor that fills her nose, engulfing her.

"Tell me," she whispers, looking into those deep black eyes, "I have the time. I'll be with you until infinity."

He laughs again, a laugh like ancient rivers, flowing toward eternity.

"Well," he begins while the sun goes to bed and the stars yawn and awaken, "once upon a time..."
