A SHADED WING
Part 1: A Shaded Mind
Prologue
Shade flew alongside Goth's side. He was keeping up well now that he had had his fair share of bat meat. The cold was beginning to settle in. Frost edged onto Shade's wingtips. He shook his wings to get rid of the icicles. What a cold place! However, according to his calculations--he sang the map every night--it wasn't far to Hibernaculum now.
Shade flapped his wings strongly. Soon the snow would fall even harder. They needed to reach Hibernaculum before then. Of course, the catch was that they had to support a prisoner, Marina the Brightwing. Shade was glad he had met these bats. They, unlike her, had enough sense to support them all. Except for Throbb, that is. Throbb was idiotic. Goth, on the other wing, was great.
Flying on course, the four bats maneuvered their way through the sailing wind. They were riding the breeze, letting it take them to the last landmark: a waterfall. They would burst through the thick sheet of water to end up in a restaurant. Ah, yes. Hibernaculum was their dream. It would soon become their life. Vampyrum Spectrum and a Silverwing, all eating up the many bats at Hibernaculum! Shade could see it now.
One day, Shade would be a true, full-fledged cannibal bat, living in the jungle like Vampyrum Spectrum, worshipping Zotz!

Goth noticed that Shade was flying better now that the little runt had had some meat. Goth had wanted to use Shade as a slave in the jungle, but now he had other opinions about the little runt. Maybe there was something in what the Silverwing had said about wanting to live in the jungle like Goth. Maybe Shade could be useful somehow.
Ugh, thinking. Leave that stuff to Shade, Goth always said. Before, he had had to do the thinking because Throbb was irresponsible and couldn't think right if his life depended on it. On the other wing, Throbb did have a knack for being incredibly stupid, which might help in the future. You could never tell, now could you? Goth was smarter than he appeared, that was certain.
Goth was ready to get back at those dirty Silverwing bats. They were Silverwings. Born food for Vampyrum Spectrum, Goth's mum had always said. He liked the sound of that. "Born food for Vampyrum Spectrum." Also, it was true, despite what Marina said. She always went on and on about how murderous Shade was being and how perfect she was. What a moron. Just like Throbb, only tastier and probably juicier, too.
One day, Goth would be King Goth, hunter of Silverwings, king of Vampyrum Spectrum, servant of Zotz!
